‘Summer of Soul,’ Questlove’s directorial debut, restores lost chapter of Black history

Summer of Soul

HARLEM, New York City — The musician Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is looking to restore a lost chapter of Black history with his directorial debut in a “Summer of Soul” in Harlem.

The summer in question was back in 1969, the same summer as another festival in Woodstock, New York.

So why did that event become so famous, while the other was forgotten? That’s just one of the intriguing questions explored in the new documentary now streaming on Hulu.

“Summer of Soul” is one of the best movies I have seen anywhere this year, and it offers a record of the Harlem Cultural Festival that ran for a few years in the late 1960s.

It’s a music movie, but also a vivid portrait of a world in transition.

Half a century has not diminished the power of what happened when history hit a pivot point. The music was the best of two different eras, the torch passed from one generation to another onstage.

In all, there were six weekends of major artists in the summer of ’69. But as the name suggests, the Harlem Cultural Festival was about a lot more than music.

1969 brought about changes in the Black community, as riots had erupted the previous year following the assassination of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

“It was a crazy, crazy, crazy period,” remembered one who attended the shows. “We needed something to reach out and touch us. We needed that music.”

On June 19, some of those who had been there half a century ago returned to the festival site, now known as Marcus Garvey Park, for a showing of the documentary.

“It’s about American culture, it’s about American history,” Marilyn McCoo said. “It’s about what we all share, if we just look at it that way.”

McCoo and her husband Billy Davis Jr. performed as part of the 5th Dimension, and a fan who saw them as a child was reunited with the couple at the premiere.

“It was just electric,” Musa Jackson said. “It was a day where we just got to be with each other.”

It was all recorded on video, and those tapes sat in a basement for decades until Questlove had them restored to create his first movie.

“This was much more than my directorial debut,” he said. “This was much chance to correct history, and that’s, that’s so important.”

“Summer of Soul” streams on Hulu, owned by the same parent company as this ABC station.

The Woodstock festival in the town of Bethel captured the imagination of an entire generation, but events shown in in this film had largely been forgotten — except by me.

The late Courtney Calendar, who helped to organize the Harlem Cultural Festival, was an early mentor of mine and hired me at WNET/Thirteen. So I came up in this business hearing all about the Summer of Soul.

Calendar was Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the New York City Department of Parks at the time. He died of cancer in 1983 at the age of just 46.

A park in Harlem is named in his honor, and this new movie would have pleased him so much.

Dead by Daylight Changes the Game with Its New Resident Evil Chapter

Hello, People of the Fog.

Today, we’re honored to be checking another massive box off our horror bucket list as the Resident Evil Chapter finally makes its long-awaited debut in the Dead by Daylight.

Creative Director Dave Richard shares some insights on what Resident Evil’s inclusion means to the team, what fans can expect when they fire up the game, and how we pay tribute to the classic franchise with Killer and Survivor features never before seen in Dead by Daylight

Associate Brand Manager Thomas Carpentier: How motivated were you to get Resident Evil into Dead by Daylight, and what did this mean to the team?

Creative Director Dave Richard: Dead by Daylight was built over the years to become a horror hall of fame where many of your favorite iconic horror characters and worlds can share a space and interact with each other. As the original survival horror experience, Resident Evil had a big impact on many of us. It holds a unique place in our hearts, and so we also wanted it to hold a unique place within our game.

It was a blast to work with these characters that we know and love, and to collaborate with developers that contributed to such mythical titles. I played these games in my teens and they hit my imagination in all the right ways. I still have my copies of the original Resident Evil games that I boot up once in a while for the memories. We’re thrilled to welcome this legendary franchise into the Dead by Daylight universe on our fifth anniversary, which coincides with the humbling 25th anniversary of Resident Evil.

Dead by Daylight - Resident Evil Chapter

TC: There are a lot of Resident Evil villains to choose from. Why Nemesis, and what makes him unique in Dead by Daylight?

DR: In Dead by Daylight, we love to feature classic characters that have a legacy whenever possible. Nemesis was a clear choice for us as it’s the most famous monster in the series. His appearance and power fit into our game perfectly.

Nemesis has a unique power for players to master – or adapt to if they are Survivors. Nemesis’ tentacle is a mid-range special attack that infects Survivors with the T-Virus, making them vulnerable and easier to attack unless they cure themselves with special vaccines found around the map. Nemesis is also our first-ever AI-assisted Killer! When facing him, a number of AI-controlled zombies will be roaming the map searching for victims so Survivors will need to watch out for them too!

Dead by Daylight - Resident Evil Chapter

TC: Same question for your Survivors. What drew you to Jill and Leon and how did they translate into Dead by Daylight?

DR: Jill and Leon are also some of the most notable characters in the Resident Evil franchise. Furthermore, they gave us the chance to feature both a male and female Survivor while making sure characters from both remakes (Resident Evil 2 & 3) were featured.

Both Jill and Leon feature three unique “support” and “offensive” Perks. Offensive Perks aren’t usually a common thing for Survivors, but they fit these characters perfectly. Jill’s “Blast Mine” allows her to set traps on generators that blind the Killer if he ever attempts to destroy them. Leon features a totally new type of Perk that we’ve never done in Dead by Daylight. It’s called “Flash-Bang” and it enables him to craft a flash grenade from scratch during a match, under specific conditions, which he can use to blind the Killer later.

Dead by Daylight - Resident Evil Chapter

TC: Final note on what Resident Evil fans can expect from this new Chapter?

DR: They can expect a new map of the Raccoon City police station – the biggest one we’ve ever created for Dead by Daylight, and of course a Killer and Survivors that come with lots of fantastic lore and nods to the original games. The team put great effort into recreating details the fans will recognize and included as many links and winks to the source material as possible… with a Dead by Daylight twist, of course. Plus, with the Legendary Sets available in our in-game store, players will even be able to play as Chris and Claire Redfield, creating the possibility of an all Resident Evil trial in the game!

That’s it for today, folks! A lot of love went into bringing the world of Resident Evil into Dead by Daylight and we can’t wait to see you guys wreak havoc with the Nemesis, lead your team with Jill and Leon, and explore every corner of our new map. See you in the Fog!

Join the Cosmic War in Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 7: Invasion

Fortnite fans,

Congratulations, you have survived the Primal Era! The Primal forces that took control of the Island have faded away. Sadly there’s no time to celebrate. A new threat has already arrived…This time from above.

Aliens have infiltrated the Island in the new Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 7: Invasion! We do not know what they want with us, but we are not going to sit around and wait to find out. Get ready to fight it out in a cosmic war! Below is everything you need to know before taking on our new extraterrestrial foes

IO Innovations

With the arrival of the Alien army, Doctor Slone has emerged from her lab and is leading the resistance with her the self-proclaimed defenders of the Island, the Imagined Order (better known as the IO).

The IO has clearly been preparing for this day, as it has already developed  advanced technology to help take on the invasion. Stay aware of your surroundings with the Recon Scanner, blast through your opponents when wielding the Pulse Rifle, and shoot through surfaces with the imposing Rail Gun. Even more IO innovations will be revealed as the Season progresses.

Alien Artillery

To no one’s surprise, the Aliens are also well prepared for war. But do not panic! If you can manage to get a hold of their technology, you can use it against your opponents! Try to get your hands on the Kymera Ray Gun: a powerful weapon that shoots a continuous beam of molten destruction. IO researchers believe that the Aliens are developing even more technology. While we do not have all the intel yet, it is believed that the Aliens have a weapon capable of moving even the heaviest of objects with ease. There are also reports of an Alien device capable of disguising its user.

Kymera Ray Gun

Eyes in the Sky! Capture a Flying Saucer

Throughout the map you will see many flying Saucers cruising around in the sky. Try to shoot down those menacing Saucers or better yet, hijack them for yourself! Flying Saucers will allow you to zoom around the Island with your squad, fire at your foes from above, and abduct anything that isn’t bolted down to the ground.

It has been discovered that the Nuts and Bolts that drop from the Saucers are great for crafting powerful weapons. Use Nuts and Bolts to turn an Assault Rifle into a Burst Assault Rifle, an SMG into a Rapid Fire SMG, or a Shotgun into a Lever Action Shotgun. Nuts and Bolts are the key to unlocking these once vaulted weapons!

Fortnite

Your Battle Pass, Your Way!

This Season’s Battle Pass may feel a bit… alien to you, as unlocking cosmetics earned through the Battle Pass will function differently from past Seasons. With the new Battle Pass, cosmetic rewards are no longer tied to specific Season levels. Instead, you’ll earn Battle Stars when you level up. Battle Stars can be exchanged for Battle Pass rewards in the order that you decide. The more Levels and rewards you earn, the more pages of rewards will become available to you. Most pages feature a special reward, becoming available to claim once all other rewards on the page are claimed.

Build Your Own Alien!

Maybe to understand the Aliens, one must become an Alien? As soon as you acquire this Season’s Battle pass, you will be rewarded with the Kymera Outfit. Kymera is an alien that you can customize yourself! In order to gain different styles for your Kymera, you will need to collect Alien Artifacts. Alien Artifacts can be found in locations on the Island that have been impacted by the invasion. Like Battle Stars, Alien Artifacts can be exchanged for more options to customize your Kymera. Be sure to try out different looks, as there are over 800,000 different combinations of head shapes, eye colors, skin patterns, and more to experiment with!

The rest of Chapter 2 Seasons 7’s Battle Pass features characters that have experience with the extraterrestrial or are extraordinary in other ways.

  • Sunny: Alien sympathizer and Punk rock enthusiast
  • Guggimon: Synthetic artist who thrives in the chaos
  • Joey: Double agent. Unlock their built-in Emote to switch between Human and Alien
  • Zyg: Ferocious battledroid made by the mind-controlling Alien Choppy. Put on Choppy as a Back Bling!
  • Doctor Slone: Leader of the Invasion defense
  • Rick Sanchez: Intergalactic traveler and the Rickest Rick.
  • Superman: Few better to help save the day. Arriving later in the Season for players to unlock.

While we have done our best to prepare you, there are still many new twists and turns that may come our way as this war escalates. Who knows when a new surprise may descend upon us… ‘Til then, get out there and defend our Island in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7: Invasion!

Spellbreak – Chapter 2: The Fracture Adds NPCs to Battle

We just released our next major update to Spellbreak, Chapter 2: The Fracture, and one of the new features that we’re adding is NPCs the player can fight over the course of the story and as a part of the new capture and control game mode, Dominion. Normally, adding NPCs to a game focused on magical combat wouldn’t be especially interesting or worthy of discussion, but Spellbreak is first and foremost a PvP game that’s been live since September, so this is entirely new ground for us.

Spellbreak

It’s worth noting Spellbreak currently has bots for giving new players a way to learn the mechanics of the game, so in making NPCs, we want to clearly differentiate them from existing bots. Bots are meant to fight similarly to how a player would and use a variety of spells and sorceries as well as runes to move around and make themselves a challenge for players. NPCs on the other hand should very explicitly not mimic player behavior. The most obvious differentiation is that the NPCs are visually different from players in most cases. They wear their own outfits and have special UI elements denoting that they’re NPCs.

As I mentioned above, there are two scenarios that players will encounter the new NPCs in and they both have different requirements for how the NPCs should act. For story quests, the NPCs can often “ambush” a player after the player has done something. They’ll warp in around the player and after a brief time during which they taunt the player with animations, they’ll attack. This momentary pause is important because it allows the player to see and understand what just happened (and what’s about to happen!) as well as giving them an opportunity to “shoot first.” When we were testing, we originally had the NPCs attacking right away which was not only more difficult but also decidedly less fun because you were put on the back foot right away instead of getting to be the aggressor.

Spellbreak

The second place you’ll meet NPCs is in Dominion where they serve two purposes. The first is that they act as a resource for players, dropping loot and providing currency. Players must keep in mind respawn times and weigh the opportunity cost of pursuing the NPCs against controlling the zones. The second purpose is that the NPCs act as a hindrance that must be dealt with lest they pepper players with magic while players try to capture and control the zones. Dealing with incoming attacks adds an additional layer to how players strategize for taking the zones.

In both the story quests as well as Dominion, the NPCs themselves are fairly weak. This allows us to use them as cannon fodder, giving the player an increased sense of power. It’s incredibly gratifying to take out a pack of NPCs with a single well-placed boulder. We’re also starting to experiment with what it means to be a difficult NPC encounter in Spellbreak without just increasing the NPC’s stats, but instead from a behavioral point of view. This is a whole separate set of challenges that we’re actively exploring.

Spellbreak

We’re excited to start exploring the idea of NPCs fighting players in Spellbreak and seeing how players respond. Our second chapter kicks off today and you’ll be able to battle the new foes in both the story and in Dominion, so grab Spellbreak from the Xbox Store and join us on Discord to give us feedback, discuss the new enemies, and squad up with fellow players. Hope to see you in game!

Dead by Daylight’s All-Kill Chapter Takes Center Stage

Hello, People of the Fog.

Think you know what a traditional Dead by Daylight chapter looks like? Think again. With our latest release, we’re taking a hard left off the classic horror highway to explore the world of K-Pop. And while the colors may be a little brighter on the surface, in true Dead by Daylight form, that just means there’s an even deeper darkness lurking below. Creative Director Dave Richard shares his thoughts on All-Kill and pushing the boundaries of the game’s aesthetic.

Associate Brand Manager Thomas Carpentier: Was K-Pop always the intended theme, or was the goal to explore the music industry as a whole?

Creative Director Dave Richard: K-Pop was the main inspiration for the All-Kill Chapter since Day 1. We always try to explore new things in the game, whether that’s with characters, themes, perks… The vibrant and highly polished aesthetic of K-pop culture juxtaposed with Dead by Daylight’s sick, grim world is alluring. We saw it as an opportunity to expand the creative space within our universe and managed to work with industry experts such as Producer DJ Swivel and K-Pop idol Kevin Woo to make sure that we remained as authentic as we could be. The name of the Chapter itself is a reference to the K-Pop industry and refers to the moment when a song or album simultaneously reaches #1 on all eight K-Pop charts. I can honestly say that the whole development team had a blast working on this Chapter.

Dead by Daylight: All-Kill

Carpentier: Who is The Trickster, the new playable Killer?

Richard: The Trickster, whose real name is Ji-Woon Hak, is a crazed idol that loves killing just a bit more than he loves his fans’ adoration. Just like his performances on stage, he kills with showmanship and extravagance. The Trickster brings a new adrenaline-pumping gameplay mechanic called “Showstopper.” Players can quickly and accurately throw a flurry of sharp blades from a distance – talk about a killer move! Additionally, The Trickster’s three unique perks allow him to promptly down would-be rescuers and block areas of the map to his advantage. We’re super happy about how the character plays and we can’t wait to see what you guys will do with him.

Carpentier: Can you tell us more about Yun-Jin, the new Survivor?

Richard: Yun-Jin Lee is The Trickster’s ambitious producer. When she was younger, she failed an audition to become an idol trainee for the renowned record label Mightee One Entertainment. Working behind the scenes she still managed to create some of the studio’s biggest hits, working her way up until she became Jin-Woon Hak’s producer. She is fabulously stylish and will leave any who hinder her career in the dust. Her three unique perks are interesting for lone-wolf players, which really fits her strong, capable, personality. They focus on giving a bonus to Yun-Jin when other Survivors are in trouble.

Dead by Daylight: All-Kill

Carpentier: How does the relationship between the Killer and the Survivor represents DbD’ storytelling evolution?

Richard: We wanted to have both characters deeply rooted in the K-Pop universe, and thus they are directly linked. It is the first time that an original Killer and Survivor actually knew each other and had a connected story before being taken by The Entity. It brings the horror to a personal level and creates an interesting dynamic in their relationship as one fuels the other. This specific relationship gave us lots of opportunities storytelling-wise and we are eager to continue working this way for the game’s next Chapters.

That’s it for today, folks. It’s been a thrill working on the All-Kill Chapter and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on it and feel the same vibe. Are you ready to put on a show? Let’s find out!

Death Is Not an Escape. Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer (4vs1) horror game where one player takes on the role of the savage Killer, and the other four players play as Survivors, trying to escape the Killer and avoid being caught, tortured and killed. Survivors play in third-person and have the advantage of better situational awareness. The Killer plays in first-person and is more focused on their prey. The Survivors’ goal in each encounter is to escape the Killing Ground without getting caught by the Killer – something that sounds easier than it is, especially when the environment changes every time you play.

‘Frustrated’ Bouchard blows chance of first title in 7 years after proclaiming ‘new chapter’ in bid to break back into top 100

‘Frustrated’ Bouchard blows chance of first title in 7 years after proclaiming ‘new chapter’ in bid to break back into top 100

Canadian social media favorite Genie Bouchard saw her chance of a first WTA title since 2014 slip away as she lost to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets in the final of the Guadalajara Open in Mexico.

Chasing a first title since she won the Nuremberg Cup in Germany seven years ago, Bouchard instead suffered defeat for the seventh time in eight appearances in WTA finals.

The Canadian 27-year-old surrendered 6-2, 7-5 to her rival, letting slip a way back into the match when she was 5-3 up in the second set but went on to lose the next four games.

“That was super frustrating,” former Wimbledon finalist Bouchard said afterwards, according to CBC.

“I felt like I was playing 12-and-under tennis at some points there. I don’t know. She was just out-grinding me. I shouldn’t have lost four games in a row like that at the end. Sometimes I didn’t know what to do.”

For Tormo, 24, it was a maiden WTA title as the world number 71 outgunned her big-hitting rival.

Bouchard is set to rise to the world number 116 spot despite more disappointment in a final.

The Canadian was once ranked as high as fifth in the world after bursting onto the senior scene and reaching the Wimbledon final in 2014 as well as the semi-finals of the French and Australian Opens the same year.

However, she has since plummeted down the charts, falling as low as 332nd in the world last March before showing signs of an uptick in form following the resumption of action after the Covid-enforced hiatus.

Bouchard lost in the final of the Istanbul Cup to Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig last September, but failed to build immediate momentum from that and didn’t emerge through qualifying for the Australian Open.

Her latest run will at least give renewed cause for optimism as she competes in the Monterrey Open, where she meets Zhu Lin in a Round of 32 match on Monday.

In recent weeks Bouchard has trumpeted a ‘new chapter’ in her career after leaving sponsors Nike for a deal with New Balance.

Former Sports Illustrated swimsuit star Bouchard boasts 2.1 million followers on Instagram and is one of tennis’s biggest social media hitters, but parted ways with Nike after reportedly being on a performance-based deal.

Bouchard has previously dismissed the notion that she has merely become an Instagram model, saying last August: “I can go running for eight hours then go to dinner and post a selfie and people think I just went to dinner.

“People need to realize it’s only what people choose to show, that’s what’s out there.

“I really try to refrain from posting bikini pictures. I really do. I’m trying my bestApparently if you post that it means you don’t play tennis or something. It’s influenced a little bit how I act.”
