Nightclubs return! Revellers cheers as Freedom Day arrives – but scientists urge caution

Revellers described the reopening as “like New Year” and said they “missed the buzz” of being out. Footage on social media showed nightclub queues erupt with excitement as the clock struck 12.

From today, there are no limits on how many people can meet up or attend events – and table service will no longer be required in pubs and restaurants.

You are no longer required to wear a face mask by law, though the Government “expects and recommends” using a covering in enclosed spaces.

Outside Egg nightclub in north London clubbers queued for more than an hour and counted down from 10 as midnight neared.

Fundraiser Chloe Waite, 37, who was first in the queue, said the occasion was “something we’re going to remember for a long time.”

“It’s going to be a special night,” she told the PA news agency.

“For me this is a New Year’s-type event and something we’re going to remember for a long, long time and we might not get the opportunity for a while.”

Gabriel Wildsmith, 26, a video producer from London, who joined Ms Waite added: “I’ve been here for an hour, I’m really keen.”

Actor Alex Clarke, 40, told PA: “There’s a bit of apprehension and uncertainty about the protocols.

“It’s thoroughly dangerous and I think no one, at least who is a specialist in public health, would be wanting to encourage an attitude by those in authority that suggests somehow the problem is solved.”

The UK is currently experiencing around 50,000 Covid infections a day, but scientists foresee this number reaching 200,000 over the next two months.

Serious illness and death is likely to be much lower than at other peaks in the pandemic due to the successful immunisation campaign, as 68 percent of the population has been vaccinated.

“If we don’t do it now we’ve got to ask ourselves, when will we ever do it?” Boris Johnson said in a video message filmed on Sunday.

“This is the right moment but we’ve got to do it cautiously. We’ve got to remember that this virus is sadly still out there.”

French, Italian and German newspapers stir the Brexit pot as ‘Europe cheers on Azzurri’

In coverage before and after the match, outlets in France, Italy and Germany were quick to put the boot in. The daily La Stampa sought to stir the Brexit pot, as it claimed the EU wanted the Azzurri to win on Sunday on account of the UK’s departure from the bloc. The paper suggested Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council were among some of the big hitters in Brussels cheering on the Italians.

It also added: “Europe Cheers on Italy.”

French paper L’Equipe published a report suggesting 69 per cent of French fans would be supporting Italy.

The Three Lions were cruelly denied their second major trophy on Sunday, succumbing to defeat against Roberto Mancini’s steely side.

The game went to penalties after finishing 1-1 after extra-time in a pulsating contest.

The Italians held their nerve, as they won a dramatic penalty shootout 3-2, leaving Gareth Southgate and his players distraught.

However, there was not much sympathy from Germany’s top tabloid, Bild Zeitung.

Its top story had a photo of Kalvin Phillips trying to console a disconsolate Bukayo Saka, after his decisive miss.

The first line of its headline was written in small letters and said: “Italy beat England.”

Then the second line ran in bold letters: “OF COURSE ON PENALTIES.”

Meanwhile, Italian fans couldn’t resist crowing on social media “It’s coming to Rome”, in reference to England’s unofficial anthem.

Zoe Ball spoke on her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show about watching Kim reacting to Andy last night.

She said: “I felt quite emotional watching Kim last night and Judy watching.”

Zoe continued: “When he went down and he looked like he’d put his hip out, you could see Kim was visibly shaking.

“It’s tough for them to watch but well done indeed.”

Rejoiner plot: Lord Adonis cheers ‘big step forward’ in campaign to force re-entry to EU

The by-election victory over the Conservatives in the Chesham and Amersham constituency has been hailed by Lord Adonis as a sea-change in attitudes. In the June 17 by-election, Liberal Democrat candidate Sarah Green took 56.7 percent of the vote and the Tory candidate Peter Fleet lagged behind with 35.5 percent. The chair of the European Movement UK, Lord Adonis, was referring to the Liberal Democrats shock win in the Chesham and Amersham by-election when he tweeted: “The campaign to rejoin the EU just took a big step forward after last night’s by-election.”

However, some analysts say that voters were swayed to side with the Liberal Democrats in the by-election because of local issues, rather than Brexit.

One major issue debated in the by-election was the Government’s plans to build the new HS2 rail link through the areas’ Chiltern Hills.

Other analysts point to deeper sentiments, because of the fact that Liberal Democrat Sarah Green secured a majority of 8,028, which overturned a seat held by the Tories since 1974.

Polling guru Professor John Curtice reacted to the Chesham and Amersham win by pointing out that most citizens in the constituency voted to stay in the EU.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme he said: “The result was a combination of the Remain inclination of the constituency and a number of local issues, HS2, planning.”

He added: “Labour voters, who of course the majority are Remain voters, were quite happy to switch to the Liberal Democrats.”

Lord Adonis was derided with suggestions that he was over-reacting after the Chesham and Amersham Liberal Democrat win.

One Twitter follower of Lord Adonis responded with a sarcastic tweet and said: “Yes, The Lib Dems rocketing from 11 to 12 seats is going to make all the difference.

However, one Twitter follower of Lord Adonis supported him and said: “Absolutely right Andrew.

“The tide has definitely started to turn.

“Reality was always going to kick in eventually.”

After the win Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said the win for his party in Buckinghamshire sent a “shockwave through British politics”.

The Liberal Democrat leader said it was a “record-breaking” victory and part of a trend of beating the Tories in the south.

He said that this was the beginning of a pattern and pointed to recent local election gains for the Liberal Democrats in Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Surrey and Wiltshire.

Mr Davey, speaking to the BBC’s Today programme, said: “People feel that the Conservatives are out of touch, they’re not listening to places like this, they’re taking them for granted.”

The Conservative Party explained their loss was because “by-elections are always difficult for the governing party” to win.

Conservative chairwoman Amanda Milling said the “work starts now to show how it’s the Conservatives that can deliver on the people’s priorities and regain their support”.

Cheers! North Austin breweries ramping up business before Austin FC's first home game

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The first Austin FC home game in Q2 Stadium is quickly approaching, but fans have been tailgating near the stadium since the season first started.

“Our focus is creating the best game day environment,” said Jeremiah Bentley, a member of Los Verdes, a group of more than 1,300 fans that come together for every game. “We are definitely ready for June 19 when we will have 20,000 fans in the stadium.”

Bentley says while they anxiously wait for June 19, the bars, restaurants and breweries near Q2 Stadium have been drawing big crowds. Los Verdes has claimed Hopsquad Brewing Co. as their tailgating spot.

“All the beers we make are done right here in this back room,” said Greg Henny, general manager of Hopsquad Brewing Co. He pointed out the view of Q2 Stadium, which can be seen from the tasting room.

You could call it brew with a view, and the crowds are only getting bigger each game, Henny says.

“It is getting to be bigger and bigger each week,” Henny said. “We are now seeing hundreds, now approaching thousands of people coming through here on game days.”

Los Verdes is not the only supporter group in the area, Bentley says.

“There are really two big supporter groups for Austin FC, Los Verdes and Austin Anthem, and there are smaller groups all around town,” Bentley said. “We both throw watch parties and sometimes it happens where we will be at Hopsquad and they will be at Circle Brewing, which are right next to each other, and it will be a big parking lot party.”

“Our numbers have definitely ticked up as a result of supporters coming out to support us it has been fantastic we have been hiring more people,” Henny said.

With the first home game just around the corner, Henny says they are preparing for one of the biggest weekends yet. They even plan to have a special guest play the day of the game.

“This whole neighborhood every brewery every restaurant everyone here it is just going to be a party,” said Henny.

Hopsquad partnered with Los Verdes to brew Zapatista, which is a Mexican lager. The beer is a popular choice for fans on game days.

Henny says Hopsquad’s beer is not served inside the stadium, but they are hoping that will change in the future.

‘Cheers, Son’s crying’: Fans resurrect viral meme as Spurs’ South Korean star in tears after League Cup final defeat

Football fans didn’t miss a beat when images appeared of Spurs’ Son Heung-min in tears upon the final whistle of his team’s Carabao Cup Final defeat to Manchester City, comparing the South Korean star to a viral meme.

Son and his Tottenham team continued their trophy drought in Sunday’s cup final in from of 8,000 fans at Wembley Stadium as a single Aymeric Laporte goal secured Manchester City’s fourth Carabao Cup win in a row – and it appears that Son took the defeat to heart as he collapsed into floods of tears at the game’s conclusion.

Several Manchester City players, including Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden, as well as his own teammate Gareth Bale, consoled the disappointed South Korean after the game but it doesn’t seem that Twitter was quite as conciliatory, with several fans taking aim at him for his post-match outburst of emotion.

I’m crying too but with laughter at the fact Son is crying over a league cup and turns 29 soon,” one fan noted coldly.

Another said that Tottenham’s latest failure to capture a major trophy should compel him to “leave Spurs and go to a proper team“, while a third said that Son’s tears can be understood when you consider that he has “never won a major trophy.

That’s just sad,” they concluded.

With Tottenham now seemingly at a crossroads, questions will surely be raised as to the future of their prized assets: Son and England skipper Harry Kane.

Both players would likely improve most major teams in Europe, and fans will be concerned as to the club’s ability to keep the players at the club at the expense of their own personal ambitions.

And as for who might be lined up to replace Mourinho? The likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Brendan Rodgers are thought to be high on Daniel Levy’s list of potential replacements – but it remains to be seen if he will be forced to expand his shortlist just a little bit further.

With the Super League debacle, the axing of Mourinho and now defeat in the Carabao Cup Final, it has been a bad week for Tottenham Hotspur. And it doesn’t look like the tide is going to turn anytime soon.

Kendall Jenner Cheers On Sister Kylie As She Goes Head-To-Head With BF Devin Booker For Pop-A-Shot

Kendall Jenner proved her allegiance to her sister Kylie when she took on NBA star Devin Booker in an arcade basketball game.

Kylie Jenner[1], 23, certainly has a competitive streak, and she went head to head with her sister Kendall Jenner[2]‘s boyfriend Devin Booker[3] in an arcade basketball game. The trio hit the town for a night out[4] on April 8, and Kendall cheered on her little sis as she took on Devin in a game of pop-a-shot. The 25-year-old took to her IG story to share a clip of the pair throwing mini basketballs into the hoops, with Devin staying about 20 points ahead of Kylie.

The cosmetics mogul[7] rocked a cream tank top and beige sweatpants with white sneakers, while Kendall’s BF cut an equally casual figure in a white tee, black shorts, and beige slides. “Come on Ky,” Kendall captioned the video. Earlier in the evening, the trio hit up LA hot spot The Nice Guy, where Kylie nearly had a run in with her ex-boyfriend Tyga[8], 31! The “Taste” rapper was photographed outside the West Hollywood restaurant with his new girlfriend Camaryn Swanson, while the KarJenner sisters arrived separatley. Kylie and Tyga split back in 2017 after an on-again, off-again romance that spanned several years.

Meanwhile, things are heating up between Kendall and Devin[9]! The Phoenix Suns star recently left a flirty comment on an Instagram post, in which Kendall rocked a pink Rodarte dress[10] with a red floral pattern. “Very beautiful.. course,” he wrote. The pair were first linked in April 2020, and have kept their romance on the down-low, only being photographed together[11] on rare occasions, often for date nights at hotspots like Soho House, Nobu Malibu and the celebrity packed[12] Santa Monica Italian restaurant Giorgio Baldi. They finally made their relationship Instagram official on Valentine’s Day[13], when they tagged one another in cute PDA photos[14] together.

Despite dating for nearly a year, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star isn’t putting a “label” on things, a source told HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY[15]. “Kendall and Devin are still not super serious,” the source said. “She travels a bunch for work but when she has time, she enjoys seeing him[16]. She has a lot fun with Devin and he makes her laugh! It just won’t be some big relationship that makes a baby.”
