Gareth Southgate praised his England players for grasping the opportunity of making the Euro 2020 semi-finals but has challenged them to go even further.
Harry Kane scored twice as Ukraine were swept aside 4-0 in Rome, with Harry Maguire and substitute Jordan Henderson also on target.
After the drama of defeating Germany at a packed Wembley on Tuesday night, it was, in the end, a fairly straightforward evening for England at the Stadio Olimpico.
Gareth Southgate’s side have yet to concede a goal in the tournament so far, and will return home to face Denmark at Wembley.
Wednesday’s opponents may offer a sterner test than Ukraine provided, and an eventual final against Spain or Italy is obviously a tough ask, but if there were any doubts about England’s credentials, they were answered in Rome.
Southgate said: “We didn’t want to take a backward step. We wanted to grasp this opportunity rather than just hope we might win or let fate have a chance to play its part. I thought the players were decisive and ruthless all night.
“It’s fabulous. I suppose it’s still sinking in that it’s another semi-final – three in three years.
“We want to go two steps further. I know what will be happening at home. It’s lovely to see everyone on a Saturday night, beer in hand. They should enjoy it. It’s been a long year for everyone. I’m chuffed the two performances have brought so much happiness to people.
“It’s fabulous for our country – a semi-final at Wembley. Everyone can really look forward to that – it’s brilliant.
“We’re not satisfied. Tonight is another very enjoyable night for everybody but even before the end of the game, I was thinking about the next challenge. We have never been to a European Championship final. It’s another opportunity to make history.”
On a night where it was admittedly hard to pick just one outstanding player for England such was their impressive application, Luke Shaw shone down the left flank.
He was England’s most creative player, following up his lovely set-piece for Maguire’s goal with an even better cross for Kane’s second. He now has three assists in this tournament and England’s threat at set-pieces was yet again on full show.
Southgate said: “His [Shaw’s] performances have improved every game. He wasn’t with us for a long time until March, which was his first game in a few years. You usually play those games trying not to make mistakes rather than flourishing.
“He feels comfortable in the environment now and is comfortable in how we want to play. His delivery was great. We’ve talked a lot in the week about set-piece goals and we put more emphasis on it. It looked like we would be dangerous in training yesterday and usually that transfers into the game and that’s what happened.”
‘Wembley will be incredible occasion’
Harry Kane said: “It’s going to be incredible. What a moment for us as a team and a nation.
“A lot of us playing now won’t have the opportunity to have a big game like that at Wembley in a major tournament again. It’s there for us. It’s an opportunity for us and we have to grab it with both hands.
“We have to enjoy being in that environment. Coming off the back of the Germany game, the spirits were high and the stadium was rocking so hopefully we can use that energy again and really take the game to Denmark.”
WASHINGTON — Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that she would move to create a select committee to further investigate the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, promising a meticulous look into the riot and its root causes after Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan push to form an independent commission to do so.
The effort came after Ms. Pelosi had signaled for weeks that she planned to take matters into her own hands after Republicans thwarted attempts to scrutinize the storming of the Capitol by a mob of Trump loyalists who sought to disrupt Congress’s counting of electoral votes to formalize President Biden’s victory. It would require the approval of the Democratic-controlled House.
“Jan. 6 was a day of darkness for our country,” Ms. Pelosi told reporters. “Our temple of democracy was attacked by insurrectionists. The gleeful desecration of the Capitol resulted in multiple deaths, physical harm to over 140 members of law enforcement and terror and trauma among staff, workers and members.”
Ms. Pelosi had maintained that she preferred that the Senate follow the House’s lead and approve a bill to form a bipartisan commission, modeled after the one that investigated the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But with Republicans opposed and many G.O.P. lawmakers working to downplay the riot, she conceded that no longer seemed possible. Fewer than 10 Republicans — the number needed to overcome a legislative filibuster — supported such an inquiry when it came to a vote in the Senate this month.
“It is imperative that we seek the truth,” she said. “It is clear the Republicans are afraid of the truth.”
Creating a select committee would hand Democrats who hold the majority the power to issue subpoenas for witnesses and documents that could reveal crucial facts. It would also all but guarantee that the investigation would take on a highly partisan dynamic on Capitol Hill, where Republicans have argued for months that Democrats are only dwelling on the riot to try to tarnish former President Donald J. Trump and their party.
In 2014, the Republican-controlled House created a select committee to investigate an attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, which Democrats denounced as intended to damage the presidential prospects of Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state. It ultimately became one of the longest, costliest and most bitterly partisan congressional investigations in history.
Ms. Pelosi said the Jan. 6 committee would investigate the root causes of the riot, including white supremacist ideologies and extremist groups, as well as security failures at the Capitol that allowed it to unfold.
Several investigations into the assault are already underway, but none have a mandate to look comprehensively at the event similar to the fact-finding commissions that scrutinized the attack of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
But much about that day remains unknown, including: who put explosives outside the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic Parties that drew law enforcement attention away from the Capitol as the crowd grew and became more violent; what was the level of coordination between extremist groups and the Trump supporters who planned the rally that preceded the attack; what Mr. Trump was doing as the mob overtook the Capitol; why the National Guard took more than four hours to respond; and what changes can be undertaken to ensure such an attack never happens again.
“Most of us had our hearts set on an independent bipartisan commission similar to the 9/11 commission — the speaker was very invested in making that happen — we just ran into a brick wall of G.O.P. opposition,” said Representative Jamie Raskin, Democrat of Maryland and a member of Ms. Pelosi’s leadership team. “They apparently see no political mileage in undertaking any inquiry.”
Mr. Raskin, who led the impeachment case against Mr. Trump over a charge of inciting the riot, said his prosecution team was “not able to follow many leads about the president’s organization and mobilization of different groups to participate in the events of that day” and he hoped the select committee could pick up that work.
“We need to learn about how that coalition of extremists came together and who facilitated it and to what extent it’s a threat to us in the future,” he said.
It was not immediately clear who would sit on the committee or who would lead it. Ms. Pelosi said she hoped that Representative Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California and the minority leader, would name “responsible” people to participate.
But Mr. McCarthy, who opposed the formation of an independent inquiry, said Wednesday that he preferred to allow Senate committees that had already been examining the attack to continue, rather than creating the body that Ms. Pelosi was proposing.
“When it comes to what happened on Jan. 6, we want to get to the bottom of that. It’s disgusting what transpired that day,” he said. “Unfortunately, the speaker has always played politics with this. Time and again. She’s never once talked to me about it.”
Senator Richard M. Burr of North Carolina, one of seven Republicans who voted to find Mr. Trump guilty of inciting the insurrection during the Senate’s impeachment trial, also said a select committee was unnecessary.
“Listen, they want to expand this to prosecute the former president — I get it,” he said. “But we need to get politics out of this. The American people need answers. They’ve gotten a lot of them from the Rules Committee and we ought to move on.”
But Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who was ousted from Republican leadership for criticizing of Mr. Trump and was one of only 35 members of her party to back the formation of a commission to investigate the riot, said such a panel was critical.
“It’s really important for us to make sure we have a full investigation into what happened Jan. 6,” she told reporters this week.
Since the launch of Disney+, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm have been expanding their shared universes for the MCU and Star Wars across Film and TV. And now that Amazon has purchased James Bond studio MGM, could we be about to see the same thing happen to the world of 007? Express.co.uk caught up with Bond expert and author Mark Edlitz, who strongly believes the tech giant will seek talks on such a matter.
Of course, the rights to the James Bond franchise are quite complicated, with EON productions owning half and ultimately having the final say on changes.
Nevertheless, Edlitz, the author of The Lost Adventures of James Bond, believes: “Amazon will absolutely engage in conversations with EON about creating a shared Bond universe.
“Amazon might pitch a spin-off series about core characters like Felix Leiter (Bond’s ally in the CIA) or Jane Moneypenny (M’s secretary who was the subject of three excellent novels and a one-shot comic) or Wai Lin (the Chinese secret agent played by Michelle Yeoh who is every bit of Bond’s equal).
“Some fans would like to see a series set in the 60s that would be a faithful remake of Ian Fleming’s novels.”
After all, as mentioned, EON still maintains a lot of control despite the deal.
Edlitz said: “The creatives who work with EON have consistently reported that EON are generous and supportive collaborators.
“But ultimately, EON calls the shots. Still, there are many instances where EON has made concessions to support the wishes and mandates of their studio partners.
“The only way that Amazon can fully control Bond is if they buy out EON’s interest in the franchise. I do not see that happening.”
Edlitz added: “EON shows an incredible instinct in knowing what is in the best long-term interest of the franchise and they do it by always preserving and protecting the character.
“At its core, EON is a family business. Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson have taken the series to unprecedented heights since the days of Albert R Broccoli and Harry Saltzman.
“But I suspect that Cubby is never far from their thoughts and that they are proud to continue on his legacy.”
In the meantime, No Time To Die is still set to hit cinemas on September 30, 2021.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Members of the Longhorn Band will be required to perform “The Eyes of Texas” alma mater and fight song at future sporting events.
However, a new marching band, which will be created by the university beginning in Fall 2022, will not be required to play the songs.
On Wednesday night, leaders from the College of Fine Arts, Butler School of Music and University Bands announced plans for the new band along with plans to provide scholarships and waive participation fees for band members.
The release says this new band will be for “individuals who want to perform in a marching band, with a focus on leading/directing bands and community engagement. The band will be an academic, for-credit course through the Butler School beginning in Fall 2022 and will not play the university alma mater or the UT fight song.”
The Longhorn Band plays at “high-profile” events, alumni events, graduations and sporting events. The Longhorn Pep Band performs at basketball and volleyball games.
All students in the Longhorn Band, Longhorn Pep Band, Mariachi Paredes and the newly created University Band will receive a performance scholarship of $ 1,000 with band section leaders receiving a minimum of $ 2,500, according to the release.
The university says a scholarship will be honored for “any rising senior in 2021-22 who wishes to opt out of the Longhorn Band.”
In October 2020, the Longhorn Band director, Scott Hanna, said an internal survey revealed there weren’t enough band members willing to play the Eyes of Texas at the upcoming Longhorns football game due to its origins at minstrel shows.
The song was played off a recording over the PA system throughout the 2020 football season.

That 75 minute break proved to be exactly what Matsuyama needed though as he returned to the course a new man.
He played the final eight holes in six-under par, turning in the first bogey-free round of anyone in the tournament to put him on 11-under for the tournament.
Matsuyama entered the final round four shots clear but the job was certainly not done by any means.
Charl Schwartzel proved in 2011 that four shots was more than attainable to claw back on Sunday at The Masters while Fuzzy Zoeller, Nick Faldo and Gary Player have come back from even bigger deficits to pull on the green jacket.
And there were clearly some nerves on the first tee for Matsuyama as he registered a bogey to start the day.
In typical championship-pedigree though, Matsuyama bounced straight back with a birdie at the second before closing out the front nine with back-to-back birdies.

History could be made as two female jockeys, Rachael Blackmore and Bryony Frost, are in with strong chances of becoming the first ever woman winner.
“Look, it’s the Grand National and anything can happen, but I wouldn’t swap him anyway,” Blackmore said of her mount Minella Times.
And well respected trainer Paul Nicholls, who has had 11 champions, is backing the girls.
“Bryony’s got a chance. Rachel Blackmore’s got a very good chance. She’s been riding at the top of her game,” he told BBC Radio 5 live.
“It’d be really good for the sport if one of the girls did win the National. They’re more than capable of winning it.”
Axios, citing multiple sources familiar with the situation, reported Wednesday that FreeSpace, a new social media platform, is one of the top contenders for Trump and his social media adviser Dan Scavino.
The platform wants its users to share content that will “add value to their lives and model healthy habits for others to duplicate,” according to its website.
“The FreeSpace Actions are backed by science to positively reinforce good habits & make the world a better place,” FreeSpace’s platformsays.
FreeSpace only has 20,000 downloads so far from Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app went up in both stores on Feb. 1.
A source told Axios that there are multiple networks Trump is working with and there has not been a final decision.
The Hill has reached out to Trump and FreeSpace for comment.
Several social media platforms banned or restricted Trump’s accounts following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Twitter said it would permanently ban Trump, citing the “risk of further incitement of violence.”
Companies had previously allowed Trump’s accounts to remain up while attaching labels warning of misleading information or restricting posts that lacked context.
Trump was known for directly launching verbal attacks at rivals on social media, using the technology to rally his supporters and also defend himself against critics.
