Insect horror: ‘Tornado’ of mosquitoes hits eastern Russia – ‘Didn’t dare open my window’

The flying insects were seen swarming on the peninsula of Kamchatka in the millions. Swarms of mosquitoes were so dense that people reported difficulties seeing where they were driving.

“I drove through the cloud of these mosquitoes for several hundred metres,” Alexei, from Ust-Kamchatsk, told the Siberian Times.

“It wasn’t a pleasant experience as I could hardly see the road.

“I didn’t dare open my windows.

“Giant pillars of mosquitoes were visible everywhere I looked.

It is the female insects people need to look out for.

“These are male mosquitoes swarming around one of several females in order to mate – there is nothing wrong with this,” she said.

This sighting is an annual occurrence and the size of the swarms depends on weather conditions and how many mosquitoes there are, however, there appear to be more this year.

“It seems to be that there are many more this year than usual,” Alexei said.

The area is surrounded by tundra and swamps, an ideal home for the blood sucking insect.

Maureen Lipman 'quits union Equity' over stance on Palestine conflict: 'How dare they'

Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman, 75, has reportedly resigned from the actors union Equity, following claims the organisation urged members to join a pro-Palestine march. Maureen, who plays Evelyn Plummer in the long-running ITV soap, stated that she “didn’t join a political union” and condemned them for trying to “incite a mob”.
As reported by The Daily Telegraph, the actress also plans on asking for her membership fee of £1,000 to be given back so that she can give it to those in need “on both sides”.

“I’m going to resign and I’m also going to ask for my £1000 a year membership fees to be given back to me, and I’m going to send it a charity for the victims on both sides,” she told the publication.

“I didn’t join a political union. I joined a union to protect its members.”

She added: “You don’t dictate to artists what they believe in, and don’t incite them to join a mob.”

“How dare they demand sanctions?

“Where is Maureen Beattie on the Uyghurs, Rohingyas, the Sudanese, the Yemenites?”

The actress, who has been apart of the union for 54 years, isn’t the only one to have opposed Equity’s stance on the conflict.

Comedian Dom Joly and former Eastenders actress Tracy-Ann Oberman have also criticised the organisation.

Equity released a statement to Express.co.uk, saying: “Equity is saddened to hear that Dame Maureen Lipman has resigned membership of our union. We have not yet had direct contact from her, but we will be endeavouring to listen to and understand her concerns privately as soon as she is able.

“Any instance of antisemitism must be rooted out and condemned, including the abhorrent abuse that has been directed towards members of the Jewish community in the past couple of weeks, as well as the small minority of hateful banners and rhetoric present on recent and otherwise peaceful Palestinian solidarity marches.”

They continued: “Equity stands in solidarity with the Jewish community and the fight against antisemitism, and is having ongoing conversations with our Jewish members and their allies on how we can continue to do so. The union has a long and proud history of standing up for peace and justice around the world.”

It comes after the union issued a statement last Thursday, encouraging members to join the “Covid-safe protest organised by Trade Unions for Palestine” over the weekend.

“Violence directed against ordinary working people in both Israel and Palestine is appalling, and it is to be condemned by our movement.

‘How dare you boo her’: UFC Florida crowd slammed for jeering Chinese ex-champ Zhang Weili

Author: RT
This post originally appeared on RT Sport News

Zhang Weili, who lost her UFC strawweight championship to Rose Namajunas at Saturday’s UFC 261, was targeted with a chorus of boos from the Florida crowd, apparently for no other reason than she hails from China.

The UFC’s first fight card to take place in front of a capacity crowd in more than a year was worth the wait. From title changes, to upsets, to stunning one-shot knockouts… and, well, whatever it was that happened to Chris Weidman’s leg, but one element from the evening which may have left a bad taste in some fight fans’ mouths was the not-so-warm welcome afforded to Zhang.

Winner of 21 straight fights, Zhang was about as dominant a champion on the UFC roster before she walked into a high kick from Namajunas which ended her night – and her title reign – a little over a minute into the first round.

The lead-in to the fight had been notable for Namajunas’ comments in which she said “better dead than red” when describing her Chinese opponent, with the Lithuanian-American fighter highlighting that Zhang hails from a country under Communist rule – which might partly explain the reaction aimed at her by the capacity crowd.

Seriously. How much of a dumb f*ck do you have to be to boo Zhang because she is Chinese?” asked one fan online, with several other reactions in a similar suit.

Who dare boo Zhang Weili?” added another, before adding: “I boo you Florida, America sucks.”

Some alleged that the motivation behind the boos was nothing but “racist” – although there is always the explanation that as an American on home soil, Namajunas was always likely to get more crowd backing.

For her part, Namajunas was keen to walk back her controversial Communist comments in her post-fight interview, telling the media that she has no personal quarrel with Zhang.

All that stuff that was the in the media, that was not my intent to ever personally attack her as a person,” Namajunas said. “It’s just my history and my past and that’s it.

Zhang’s prior dominance in the women’s 115-pound fold will likely earn her an immediate rematch with Namajunas amid their developing rivalry.

I feel I can come back real quick,” Zhang said afterwards. “I was still conscious, the referee stopped it a little bit early.”

She, and most of the audience watching at home, will likely hope that any rematch doesn’t take place in Florida, though.

'How dare he!' Piers Morgan erupts at 'brass-necked' Prince Andrew over uniform demands

After Prince Philip’s death, Andrew said: “We’ve lost the grandfather of the nation,” and shared that the Queen had said her husband’s passing has “left a huge void in her life”.

Andrew then revealed in a statement: “My father said to me on the telephone a few months ago, ‘We are all in the same boat and we must always remember that, but occasionally we, the family, are asked to stand up and show compassion and leadership’.

“And unfortunately, with my father’s death, it has brought it home to me, not just our loss, but actually the loss that everybody else has felt, for so many people who have died and lost loved ones during the pandemic.

“And so, we are all in the same boat – slightly different circumstances because he didn’t die from COVID, but we’re all feeling a great sense of loss.”

‘How dare you’ Piers Morgan brands Patrick J Adams’ comments on Royal Family ‘disgusting’

Piers Morgan, 55, has responded to an emotional statement from Patrick J Adams, 39, on Twitter. Patrick was Meghan Markle’s, 39, on-screen husband in the long-running legal drama Suits. Now he has come to her defence in a Twitter statement praising her over her navigation of an “archaic and toxic” family dynamic.
Piers responded to a series of tweets from Patrick earlier this evening defending Meghan ahead of her and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah.

He wrote in view of his 7.7 million followers: “Actually, what’s ‘OBSCENE’ is your friend trashing her husband’s family on global TV as the Queen’s 99-yr-old husband lies in hospital.

“How dare you attack our Royal Family like this, you jumped-up little twerp.”

Piers followed this with another tweet in response to Patrick’s statement.

“It sickened me to read the endless racist, slanderous, clickbaiting vitriol spewed in her direction from all manner of media across the UK and the world but I also knew that Meghan was stronger than people realized or understood and they would regret underestimating her.

“And then they welcomed Archie. And on any sort of decent planet that would be a time to stop sharpening the knives and let these two people enjoy the magical early months and years of starting a family. But we don’t live on that planet and instead the hunt continued.”

He also addressed the bullying claims which have been levelled against Meghan this week.

Following allegations in The Times from Meghan’s household staff, Buckingham Palace confirmed they were launching an investigation.

A statement issued on behalf of The Duchess of Sussex denied the claims.

Patrick continued: “It’s OBSCENE that the Royal Family, who’s newest member is currently GROWING INSIDE OF HER, is promoting and amplifying accusations of ‘bullying’ against a woman who herself was basically forced to flea [sic] the UK in order protect her family and her own mental health.

“IMO, [sic] this newest chapter and it’s timing is just another stunning example of the shamelessness of a [sic] institution that has outlived its relevance, is way overdrawn on credibility and apparently bankrupt of decency.

“Find someone else to admonish, berate and torment. My friend Meghan is way out of your league.”
