At Monday’s opening day of play on Wimbledon’s Centre Court in London, the announcer told the crowd of spectators there were some special guests in attendance.
People who played critical roles in the UK’s response to the coronavirus pandemic — from transport workers to medical staffers with Britain’s National Health Service — had been invited to sit in the royal box.
But the announcer only made it partially through the list before the crowd reacted.
“Today [the special guests] include leaders who have developed the anti-COVID vaccines,” said the announcer, as the camera zoomed in on Dame Sarah Gilbert, a professor of vaccinology at the University of Oxford who led the team that developed the AstraZeneca vaccine.
For her efforts, Gilbert received a damehood earlier this month when she was named on the Queen’s birthday honors list.
When the Wimbledon crowd realized who was in attendance, they burst into wild applause that soon became a standing ovation.
As the cheering continued for more than a minute, Gilbert looked overwhelmed.
People online were extremely moved by a viral video of the standing ovation.
The Twitter account for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, also retweeted the video and added their thanks.
This year’s Wimbledon is the first since 2019. Last year’s tournament was canceled due to the pandemic.
Audience members are not required to wear masks when seated but are required to present a negative COVID test or show proof of vaccination status.

Dr Christopher Allen, a clinical neuroscientist at Nottingham University, who wrote the article, acknowledged that the jury is out at this stage whether the jab caused the deadly syndrome and it could merely be association.
But it demonstrates the need for “robust post-vaccination surveillance” nonetheless, he said.
He stressed that the current crop of vaccines currently deployed are “very safe”.
Dr Allen proposed that the reaction may be “a cross-reactive immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein”, causing the immune system to overreact and the body to attack its own nerves.

1 p.m. update
The NHC is now giving the disturbance in the Gulf a 50% chance of development (becoming a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm).
The impacts in our area will be minor regardless of development. We can expect scattered showers and storms along with wind gusts over 30 mph overnight and through Saturday, with rain tapering off from east to west on Sunday.
Still, if it makes landfall in Texas at tropical depression or storm strength, it’ll be the first in recorded history to do so before June 1, the customary start of the Atlantic hurricane season.
1 p.m. update
A large area of thunderstorms in the western Gulf is drifting northwest towards the Texas coast.
Conditions are slightly favorable for development and the National Hurricane Center is giving it a 60% chance. Whether it develops or not, it’ll give us at least scattered, heavy downpours overnight and through the day on Saturday.
High rain rates along with the slow movement of the storms means some flooding will be possible. Gusty winds and coastal flooding may also be an issue near the coast.
According to the latest NOAA outlook, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season will be busier than normal, but it’s unlikely to be as crazy as 2020’s record-shattering year. They’re expecting 13-20 tropical storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-5 major hurricanes.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, although storms can form before and after those dates.

“We may also be able to gain insights into sensing strategies of other species [like bats] by comparing with knowledge gained in studies on human echolocation.”
Humans actually possess more than the five basic senses of touch, sight, sound, taste and smell.
In fact, humans have a variety of additional minor senses such as spatial orientation, proprioception (body position) and pain reception while other animals have even more advanced senses such as being able to detect electrical and magnetic signals.
The echoed sound was rendered binaurally to create a surround sound experience similar to that of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR).
Mr Sumiya added: “The synthetic echolocation signal used in this study included high-frequency signals up to 41 kHz that humans cannot listen to.”
Participants in the study were able to identify the existence of the rotating cylinders using only the echoed sound through timbre and pitch of the echo even though they could not directly see the objects.

Speaking exclusively to the Express.co.uk is Dr Eszter Vamos – the lead researcher from Imperial College London. “It’s never too late, or early, to reduce your risk of dementia,” she said. “Our research conducted among people with diabetes highlights that while it is never too late to take action, mid-life (usually defined as 45 to 64 years) is very important to help reduce the risk of dementia.” Having diabetes is already a risk factor for dementia, but Dr Vamos found that higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels increased the risk further.
The findings demonstrated that changes in blood pressure differed between those who did and didn’t develop dementia.
People with higher blood pressure readings earlier on in life were more likely to develop dementia.
In addition, blood sugar and cholesterol levels were also found to be generally higher across the entire 20-year period among people with type 2 diabetes who developed dementia compared to those who didn’t.
Dr Vamos commented on the data: “Our results emphasise the importance of carefully managing cardiometabolic factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels early on for people with type 2 diabetes.
“Regular check-ups and early comprehensive management of potential risk factors might help reduce dementia risk.”
Dr Vamos continued: “While this study can’t confirm causal associations, these results show that blood pressure and other cardiometabolic factors could be contributing to dementia development up to two decades before diagnosis.”
Another interesting finding was that 11 to 19 years before their dementia diagnosis, blood pressure readings steeply declined.
In addition, the diabetic group who later developed dementia had a decline in body weight up to 11 years prior to their diagnosis.
When questioned why this would be, Dr Vamos explained to Express.co.uk why this would be.
“Previous research has shown that weight and blood pressure often reduce during the early stages of dementia, years before its diagnosis,” Dr Vamos said.
“These changes might be the result of dementia itself, due to gradual changes in behaviour including diet, reduced calorie intake, and physical activity.”
Dr Vamos’s study results highlight the importance of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control in order to mitigate the risk of dementia.
Director of Research at Diabetes UK, Dr Elizabeth Robertson, said that “for the first time, researchers have uncovered a pattern of changes in people with type 2 diabetes that are associated with dementia”.
Becoming aware of these risk factors – high blood pressure and high cholesterol – is “vital in given people with type 2 diabetes the best possible care”.
Dementia UK advises everybody – whether or not you have diabetes – to eat healthy, keep active, reduce alcohol intake and to not smoke.
Leading a healthy lifestyle is the best preventative tool you have to reduce your risk of disease.
Dr Vamos presented her findings to the scientific community on Tuesday, April 27 2021.
Russian authorities will finance construction of a hydrographic vessel to conduct surveys along the Northern Sea Route in Russia’s Arctic, the press office for the Cabinet of Ministers announced on Friday.
The new ship, which is expected to come into operation in 2024, will be brought into service to meet demand for hydrographic support from the drillers and other companies that ply the icey Arctic seas.
Also on rt.com Russia’s Arctic sea route draws growing global investor interest, Foreign Ministry says
The survey vessel will join the fleet of Russian Arc7 ice-class ships that are designed to ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route, and are able sail in ice up to 1.7 meters thick.
The ship has a rated capacity of 8 MW and will be tooled up with technology that ensures safe navigation while it explores the ocean surfaces of the Arctic and the contours of the ocean floor below.
The plan comes as part of a broader push by the Russian government to develop the Arctic. President Vladimir Putin has made Russia’s Arctic region a strategic priority and ordered investments into infrastructure projects, drilling and a fleet of icebreakers and ice-class tankers.
