Surges and kids: Up to 30% of children infected will develop long-haul Covid, expert says

If vaccination rates among adults and kids 12 and older keep lagging amid increased spread of the Delta variant, the youngest members of the population will be most affected, said Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccinologist and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.
“Transmission will continue to accelerate … and the ones who will also pay the price, in addition to the unvaccinated adolescents, are the little kids who depend on the adults and adolescents to get vaccinated in order to slow or halt transmission,” he said.
In 46 states, the rates of new cases this past week are at least 10% higher than the rates of new cases the previous week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
In Los Angeles County, the country’s most populous, there has been a 500% increase in cases over the past month, according to the county’s latest health data.
As cases increase, only 48.1% of the population is fully vaccinated, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And though many may brush off the risk of low vaccination rates to children, citing their low Covid-19 mortality rates, Hotez said they are still at risk for serious complications.
In Mississippi, seven children are in intensive care with Covid-19, and two are on ventilators, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs tweeted Tuesday evening.
Many more adolescents could become hospitalized, Hotez said, adding up to 30% of children infected will develop long-haul ovid.
Scientists are now learning about neurological consequences to long-haul covid, Hotez added. Some studies have shown impacts on the brain of people who have been infected with the virus. One study in April found 34% of Covid-19 survivors received a diagnosis for a neurological or psychological condition within six months of their infection.
“What you’re doing is your condemning a whole generation of adolescents to neurologic injury totally unnecessarily,” Hotez said. “It’s just absolutely heartbreaking and beyond frustrating for vaccine scientists like myself to see this happen.”

Debate over vaccine mandates

With experts stressing the importance in vaccinating a majority of Americans against the virus, some officials are debating whether to mandate vaccinations at the local level.
Some schools and employers have already implemented measures requiring students and employees to be vaccinated before returning.
Last month, Morgan Stanley announced unvaccinated employees, guests and clients would be banned from its New York headquarters. In April, Houston Methodist, a network of eight hospitals, said it would require all of its employees to get vaccinated. Of the 26,000 employees, 153 resigned or were fired as a result of refusing the vaccine.
That same month, the American College Health Association issued a policy statement recommending Covid-19 vaccination requirements for all on-campus college and university students for the upcoming fall semester, where state law and resources allow.
But many states are moving to block such requirements.
A CNN analysis found that at least seven states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Montana, Oklahoma and Utah — have enacted legislation this year that would restrict public schools from requiring either coronavirus vaccinations or documentation of vaccination status.
Such legislation can hurt the nation’s 48 million Americans under the age of 12, former Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday.
Currently, Covid-19 vaccines are only available in the US to people 12 and older. Vaccine trials are currently underway for children 6 months through 11 years old.
“If we start with a lens on the children and wanting children to get back to school, which is what we all say is the priority, then we have to get more serious about employers and schools and universities stepping up and saying ‘it’s great if you don’t want to be vaccinated. But if you don’t, you really can’t have access to places that will put you in contact with folks who can’t get vaccinated,'” Sebelius said.
One thing the federal government can do to support vaccine mandates is expedite the full authorization of the available vaccines, she said.
“Getting full approval — getting out of the emergency use authorization and into full approval — is something that will clear up any legal questions that private employers may have,” Sebelius said.

What surges could mean for the school year

Most officials and health experts have stressed the importance of students being able to safely return to school in the new academic year, but vaccine hesitancy could impact how districts move forward.
Only a quarter of Americans age 12 to 15 are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, according to data published Tuesday by the CDC, making them the age group with the lowest rate of vaccination.
California’s K-12 schools were directed Monday to turn away students from campuses for refusing to wear face coverings in class, but the rules were revised just hours later to give schools more leeway in implementing protocol.
Despite the initial guidance stating, “Schools must exclude students from campus if they are not exempt from wearing a face covering under [California Department of Public Health] guidelines and refuse to wear one provided by the school,” spokesman for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office, Alex Stack, insists the intent was not to turn away students.
“The way [the guidance] was written didn’t accurately reflect the intent, so it was rewritten,” Stack told CNN, acknowledging the statement came across as “banning kids.” “It’s important to get this right so parents and students know what to expect going in to school year.”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city’s guidance could change as the school year gets closer, but for now families should assume masks will still be worn in schools come September.
“We’ve been constantly working with the CDC, but we also in this case have been very careful given everything the city has been through … for now, we’re sticking with the idea that, you know, wearing the masks is the smart thing to do in schools,” De Blasio said.

The company says it is picking up efforts to develop a new booster and will seek emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration

It said it would seek emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration for a booster dose in August after releasing more data about how well a third, booster dose of vaccine works.
“As seen in real world data released from the Israel Ministry of Health, vaccine efficacy in preventing both infection and symptomatic disease has declined six months post-vaccination, although efficacy in preventing serious illnesses remains high,” the company said in a statement emailed to CNN.
“Additionally, during this period the Delta variant is becoming the dominate variant in Israel as well as many other countries. These findings are consistent with an ongoing analysis from the Companies’ Phase 3 study,” it added.
“While protection against severe disease remained high across the full six months, a decline in efficacy against symptomatic disease over time and the continued emergence of variants are expected. Based on the totality of the data they have to date, Pfizer and BioNTech believe that a third dose may be beneficial within 6 to 12 months following the second dose to maintain highest levels of protection.”
Israel’s health ministry said in a statement earlier this week that it had seen efficacy of Pfizer’s vaccine drop from more than 90% to about 64% as the B.1.617.2 or Delta variant spread.
The company said booster doses of its vaccine, developed with BioNTech, produces levels of neutralizing antibodies that are five to 10 times higher than what’s produced after two doses.
“The companies expect to publish more definitive data soon as well as in a peer-reviewed journal and plan to submit the data to the FDA, EMA and other regulatory authorities in the coming weeks,” Pfizer said in a statement.
And it says it’s also developing a new formulation for a booster dose that may more thoroughly protect people from new variants.
“While Pfizer and BioNTech believe a third dose of BNT162b2 has the potential to preserve the highest levels of protective efficacy against all currently known variants including Delta, the companies are remaining vigilant and are developing an updated version of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine that targets the full spike protein of the Delta variant,” the company said. Current vaccines target just a piece of the spike protein — the part of the virus it uses to attach to cells.
“The first batch of the mRNA for the trial has already been manufactured at BioNTech’s facility in Mainz, Germany. The Companies anticipate the clinical studies to begin in August, subject to regulatory approvals.”

The Wimbledon Crowd Gave A Standing Ovation For A Woman Who Helped Develop A COVID Vaccine

At Monday’s opening day of play on Wimbledon’s Centre Court in London, the announcer told the crowd of spectators there were some special guests in attendance.

People who played critical roles in the UK’s response to the coronavirus pandemic — from transport workers to medical staffers with Britain’s National Health Service — had been invited to sit in the royal box.

But the announcer only made it partially through the list before the crowd reacted.

“Today [the special guests] include leaders who have developed the anti-COVID vaccines,” said the announcer, as the camera zoomed in on Dame Sarah Gilbert, a professor of vaccinology at the University of Oxford who led the team that developed the AstraZeneca vaccine.

For her efforts, Gilbert received a damehood earlier this month when she was named on the Queen’s birthday honors list.

When the Wimbledon crowd realized who was in attendance, they burst into wild applause that soon became a standing ovation.

As the cheering continued for more than a minute, Gilbert looked overwhelmed.

People online were extremely moved by a viral video of the standing ovation.

The Twitter account for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, also retweeted the video and added their thanks.

This year’s Wimbledon is the first since 2019. Last year’s tournament was canceled due to the pandemic.

Audience members are not required to wear masks when seated but are required to present a negative COVID test or show proof of vaccination status.

Four men develop life-threatening condition after receiving AstraZeneca jab – symptoms

Dr Christopher Allen, a clinical neuroscientist at Nottingham University, who wrote the article, acknowledged that the jury is out at this stage whether the jab caused the deadly syndrome and it could merely be association.

But it demonstrates the need for “robust post-vaccination surveillance” nonetheless, he said.

He stressed that the current crop of vaccines currently deployed are “very safe”.

Dr Allen proposed that the reaction may be “a cross-reactive immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein”, causing the immune system to overreact and the body to attack its own nerves.

Disturbance in the western Gulf now has a 50% chance to develop

May 21

1 p.m. update
The NHC is now giving the disturbance in the Gulf a 50% chance of development (becoming a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm).

The impacts in our area will be minor regardless of development. We can expect scattered showers and storms along with wind gusts over 30 mph overnight and through Saturday, with rain tapering off from east to west on Sunday.

Still, if it makes landfall in Texas at tropical depression or storm strength, it’ll be the first in recorded history to do so before June 1, the customary start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

1 p.m. update
A large area of thunderstorms in the western Gulf is drifting northwest towards the Texas coast.

Conditions are slightly favorable for development and the National Hurricane Center is giving it a 60% chance. Whether it develops or not, it’ll give us at least scattered, heavy downpours overnight and through the day on Saturday.

High rain rates along with the slow movement of the storms means some flooding will be possible. Gusty winds and coastal flooding may also be an issue near the coast.

May 20, 2021

According to the latest NOAA outlook, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season will be busier than normal, but it’s unlikely to be as crazy as 2020’s record-shattering year. They’re expecting 13-20 tropical storms, 6-10 hurricanes, and 3-5 major hurricanes.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, although storms can form before and after those dates.

During hurricane season, ABC13 meteorologists will provide daily tropical weather updates on this page.

Sixth sense! Study claims humans could develop 'bat-like' echolocation sensing abilities

A study, which appeared in Plos One earlier this month, claims humans have a very basic form of echolocation, a trait seen in other species such as bats and dolphins, that helps identify the shape and movement of objects through sound. Speaking to Pop Mech, Miwa Sumiya, Ph.D, a researcher affiliated with the Center for Information and Neural Networks and one of the study’s authors, said the finding may lead to greater understanding of the human brain.
Mr Miwa said: “Examining how humans can acquire new sensing abilities to recognize environments using sounds [i.e., echolocation] may lead to the understanding of the flexibility of human brains.

“We may also be able to gain insights into sensing strategies of other species [like bats] by comparing with knowledge gained in studies on human echolocation.”

Humans actually possess more than the five basic senses of touch, sight, sound, taste and smell.

In fact, humans have a variety of additional minor senses such as spatial orientation, proprioception (body position) and pain reception while other animals have even more advanced senses such as being able to detect electrical and magnetic signals.

In a complex experiment, 15 participants used a device to generate an echolocation signal that bounced off two oddly shaped cylinders which were either rotating or stationary and then listened back to the echoed sound through headphones.

The echoed sound was rendered binaurally to create a surround sound experience similar to that of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR).

Mr Sumiya added: “The synthetic echolocation signal used in this study included high-frequency signals up to 41 kHz that humans cannot listen to.”

Participants in the study were able to identify the existence of the rotating cylinders using only the echoed sound through timbre and pitch of the echo even though they could not directly see the objects.

Speaking to the Smithsonian Magazine in 2017, he said: “You could fill libraries with what we know about the human visual system, but what we know about human echolocation could barely fill a bookshelf.”

Diabetes type 2: Doctor identifies two risk factors for diabetics to develop dementia

Author:
This post originally appeared on Daily Express :: Health Feed

Speaking exclusively to the Express.co.uk is Dr Eszter Vamos – the lead researcher from Imperial College London. “It’s never too late, or early, to reduce your risk of dementia,” she said. “Our research conducted among people with diabetes highlights that while it is never too late to take action, mid-life (usually defined as 45 to 64 years) is very important to help reduce the risk of dementia.” Having diabetes is already a risk factor for dementia, but Dr Vamos found that higher blood pressure and cholesterol levels increased the risk further.

The findings demonstrated that changes in blood pressure differed between those who did and didn’t develop dementia.

People with higher blood pressure readings earlier on in life were more likely to develop dementia.

In addition, blood sugar and cholesterol levels were also found to be generally higher across the entire 20-year period among people with type 2 diabetes who developed dementia compared to those who didn’t.

Dr Vamos commented on the data: “Our results emphasise the importance of carefully managing cardiometabolic factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels early on for people with type 2 diabetes.

“Regular check-ups and early comprehensive management of potential risk factors might help reduce dementia risk.”

Dr Vamos continued: “While this study can’t confirm causal associations, these results show that blood pressure and other cardiometabolic factors could be contributing to dementia development up to two decades before diagnosis.”

Another interesting finding was that 11 to 19 years before their dementia diagnosis, blood pressure readings steeply declined.

In addition, the diabetic group who later developed dementia had a decline in body weight up to 11 years prior to their diagnosis.

When questioned why this would be, Dr Vamos explained to Express.co.uk why this would be.

“Previous research has shown that weight and blood pressure often reduce during the early stages of dementia, years before its diagnosis,” Dr Vamos said.

“These changes might be the result of dementia itself, due to gradual changes in behaviour including diet, reduced calorie intake, and physical activity.”

Dr Vamos’s study results highlight the importance of keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control in order to mitigate the risk of dementia.

Director of Research at Diabetes UK, Dr Elizabeth Robertson, said that “for the first time, researchers have uncovered a pattern of changes in people with type 2 diabetes that are associated with dementia”.

Becoming aware of these risk factors – high blood pressure and high cholesterol – is “vital in given people with type 2 diabetes the best possible care”.

Dementia UK advises everybody – whether or not you have diabetes – to eat healthy, keep active, reduce alcohol intake and to not smoke.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is the best preventative tool you have to reduce your risk of disease.

Dr Vamos presented her findings to the scientific community on Tuesday, April 27 2021.

Russia to invest nearly $100 million to develop vessel for Arctic survey

Russian authorities will finance construction of a hydrographic vessel to conduct surveys along the Northern Sea Route in Russia’s Arctic, the press office for the Cabinet of Ministers announced on Friday.

“More than seven billion rubles [$ 92 million] will be invested in the construction of the lead hydrographic vessel aimed at operating in the waters of the Northern Sea Route (NSR),” the cabinet said in a statement.

The new ship, which is expected to come into operation in 2024, will be brought into service to meet demand for hydrographic support from the drillers and other companies that ply the icey Arctic seas.
Also on rt.com Russia’s Arctic sea route draws growing global investor interest, Foreign Ministry says
The survey vessel will join the fleet of Russian Arc7 ice-class ships that are designed to ensure year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route, and are able sail in ice up to 1.7 meters thick.

The ship has a rated capacity of 8 MW and will be tooled up with technology that ensures safe navigation while it explores the ocean surfaces of the Arctic and the contours of the ocean floor below.

The plan comes as part of a broader push by the Russian government to develop the Arctic. President Vladimir Putin has made Russia’s Arctic region a strategic priority and ordered investments into infrastructure projects, drilling and a fleet of icebreakers and ice-class tankers.
