Gary Neville hails Edinson Cavani's Man Utd stay: 'He's been an absolute joy'

Neville then extolled the virtues of Cavani as an old-fashioned number nine who can lead the line and provide stability and leadership up front to help bring the best out of his young emerging teammates in the United strikeforce.

“This is a throwback. A classic centre-forward, makes brilliant runs, runs that you’d be taught 20 years ago, and I just think he’s been an absolute joy,” he enthused.

“We questioned at the beginning whether he actually could do it for Manchester United, but he’s done it and I’m delighted he’s going to be at Manchester United next season.

“They’re a better team with him in it. I think he’s in the best team. Always in great positions, the timing of his runs and finishing from those positions is the best in the league.

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani 'has signed contract extension'

It’ll now be intriguing to see what United do in the transfer market this summer.

Erling Haaland has long been on their radar, with the Borussia Dortmund striker scoring a remarkable 35 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined.

Harry Kane also has his admirers at Old Trafford, having sparkled for Tottenham during a problematic campaign under Jose Mourinho and Ryan Mason.

But, by keeping Cavani, United may now focus their efforts elsewhere.

A defender is on their radar, with Raphael Varane admired amid uncertainty over his Real Madrid contract.

And so too is a holding midfielder, with Declan Rice backed behind the scenes.

Edinson Cavani 'won't sign Man Utd contract' as Boca Juniors move edges closer

Edinson Cavani is closing in on a move to Boca Juniors – but it won’t be announced until the end of the season.

The striker has been linked with an Old Trafford exit despite only being at the club for less than a year.

Cavani arrived on a free after his PSG contract expired but has been unable to settle in England.

His father spoke out about his son’s situation and claimed he was desperate to return to South America.

Todo Fichajes[1] reports that the striker will not be extending his stay in Manchester under any circumstances.

Boca therefore look to be Cavani’s next club but all parties are keeping quiet until the season is over.

Former United man Marcos Rojo recently swapped Manchester for the Argentinean club and is hoping for a “second connection” with Cavani.

He told ESPN: “Yes I spoke with him, I speak with him a lot.

“We hadn’t been together for long in Manchester, only four or five months, but he’s a great person and let’s hope for a second connection.

“When I came here [to Boca] he always asked me if I was good, how I was getting on, because we didn’t see each other during the last period in England.

“It’s important that great players such as Cavani, who is a historic player for Uruguay and played in lots of important clubs, wants to come and play for Boca.

“I think that speaks very well for the club and for Argentinian football.”

Cavani has scored seven times in 28 outings for the Red Devils including a match winning brace against Southampton[2] earlier this season.

He was banned following the win however due to a post he put on social media – a decision which is said to have affected him.

Man Utd boss Solskjaer drops Edinson Cavani transfer hint with Mason Greenwood praise

“Mason needs to add those goals to his tally. We know how wonderful a talent he is. He played really well tonight and when he can add those goals, we know he’ll really be a goodun.”

He added of Cavani: “Sometimes as a centre-forward it doesn’t work your way, you’ve got to be patient, be in the box. They defended well with a 5-4-1.

“Five at the back is always hard to break down but we managed in the end.”

The win puts United four points ahead of third-placed Leicester, who lost to champions elect Manchester City on Saturday, while Chelsea and Tottenham both dropped points in the top-four race.

Solskjaer added: “It doesn’t really matter what anyone else does as long as we win and we get our points. We’re in second place. It’s a long way up but we want to consolidate second.”

Rashford played after being withdrawn from the England squad over the international break, having missed United’s previous three games, but succumbed to a fresh problem in the second half and grimaced as he left the pitch.

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clarifies Edinson Cavani situation before Leicester tie

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted Edinson Cavani could stay at the club. The Uruguay international has been linked with a move to Boca Juniors ahead of the summer transfer window. And, ahead of the Red Devils’ FA Cup showdown with Leicester, his manager has spoken out.
Cavani’s father, Luis, recently claimed his son would look to leave Old Trafford.

“My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again,” he said. “Edinson is going to end up playing in South America.

“I want Edinson to play in a team that fights for something important. Edinson had many conversations with Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca. He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca.

“If he returns to South America he is leaning towards Boca. By the middle of the year he will return to South America.

“My son’s idea is not to continue there, he wants to return.”

But Solskjaer has now set the record straight, insisting Cavani could stay for another year.

“We’re speaking to Eddy. Edinson is a top striker and whatever he decides to do, let’s see. We’re in good dialogue with him” said the 48-year-old.

“We want a competitive squad and we need someone up there to score the goals for us. So we’re looking at it.”

After his father’s comments, Cavani posted a picture celebrating his goal against Everton with a big smile on his face.

He’s missed the club’s last four matches and Solskjaer has admitted he’s unsure why the 33-year-old keeps suffering from minor injuries.

“We haven’t really got to the bottom of it with Edinson,” said the Norwegian.

“He’s worked really hard and is joining training sessions and towards the end of training sessions when he needs to chop it up and feel 100 per cent ready for the game and he hasn’t really gotten there yet.

“So, it’s down to him.

“He wants to be 100 per cent when he joins in. He doesn’t want to come in and look off the pace, so hopefully he can be ready for Sunday but I’m not sure either, because after the training yesterday he felt something that he couldn’t travel with us.”

With Cavani and Marcus Rashford out injured, Solskjaer could be forgiven for feeling fearful.

But the United boss has insisted he’s not worried about the club’s current situation – and has hinted Anthony Martial will return for the Leicester showdown.

“Not concerned at all,” he said.

“I just want Anthony fit. Same with Paul. We just want them to go and play. They’ve missed too many games.

“This was a hip injury he got against AC Milan a week ago, we hoped he was going to be ready for West Ham and then he couldn’t make that one.

“Then he was close to getting fit for this one [against AC Milan]. He couldn’t make it but hopefully he can make Sunday [against Leicester].

“I’m not sure because he’s not reacted how we hoped. He’s working hard to get the treatment, in the pool, light work and everything to get ready.

“That’s the pleasing thing. He’s just wanting to get fit and I think it will benefit him going to France and playing.”

On Paul Pogba, he added: “We’ll have to see how much he can play.

“I’m not sure if he can play 90 minutes or if he can start, but you see the impact he can make if he comes on as a sub.

“If he feels okay, maybe we can start him as well.

“We have to see who the runners and riders are after tonight. It’s a long travel, we’ll be late back, so we’ll see. I hope he’s ready to start.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responds to Edinson Cavani summer transfer speculation

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims no decision has been made on the future of Edinson Cavani as of yet, amid reports that he has held talks with Boca Juniors. The striker is said to be feeling unsettled in Manchester, something that his father Luis has detailed in a surprise interview in South America in which he outlined his son’s plans to quit Old Trafford.
Cavani has endured a stop-start campaign in England following his arrival on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer amid a host of injury problems.

But his manager Solskjaer is adamant his professionalism shouldn’t be questioned, even if the Uruguayan is considering his options.

The seasoned veteran is now in the final months of his contract but United do have the option to extend his stay by a further year.

“Edinson is fully focussed on being available,” Solskjaer said ahead of the Europa League clash with AC Milan. “He is proud to play for Man Utd. No decision been made for next season.

“I can’t comment on what has been said. I can only say that we are very pleased with Edinson [Cavani] when he is here. Day in and day out.

The ban is said to have made Cavani uncomfortable with living in England while being away from his family has also taken its toll.

His father added: “We are very anxious. We have always been to visit him, he has been in very beautiful places where people have received him very well.

“He has made himself loved, he has made many friends, but today he does not feel comfortable where he is.

“He has been thinking for more than two years that he wants to be closer to his family and that is the reason why I think Edi is going to end up playing for a team from here in South America.

“I know that he would like to play and be close to his country so that we could be closer to him.”

Edinson Cavani releases five-word statement after father claims Man Utd star is unhappy

Cavani signed a one-year deal at United when he joined as a free agent last summer, with the option for another season.

The Uruguay international has proven to be an astute piece of business as well, scoring six goals in just nine Premier League starts.

There have been suggestions that his role at the club would potentially decrease next season though with United strongly linked with a move for Erling Haaland.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer indicated last month that he was keen to get Cavani signed up for at least one more season.

Edinson Cavani 'to quit' Man Utd as father takes dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is set to leave the Red Devils in the summer, his father has confirmed. Cavani joined United on a free transfer last year following his release from Paris Saint-Germain. The Uruguyan signed a one-year contract with the option of a further season.
Cavani has made 25 appearances for United so far, scoring seven goals.

But it appears this will be his first and only campain in English football.

The 34-year-old’s father Luis Cavani says the striker wants to return to South America.

Luis Cavani told TyC Sports: “My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again.

However, he was absent for the visit to rivals Manchester City on Sunday, which Solskjaer put down to a minor problem.

“He had to come off [in] training, he didn’t feel right unfortunately,” Solskjaer told MUTV.

The Norwegian added to Sky Sports: “He’s got a niggle again unfortunately.

“He had to come off training yesterday. We had to make a team without him.”
