Emmerdale actress Gemma Oaten 'nearly died four times' during 13 year battle with anorexia

Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten, 37, reveals she “nearly died four times” over the 13 years she’s battled anorexia, as she opens up about some of her darkest times. In a film for ITV‘s Lorraine the actress, who played Rachel Breckle from 2011 to 2015 in the long-running soap, speaks to Love Island’s Dr Alex George about her brushes with death in an attempt to raise more awareness around the silent killer.
Gemma says: “I lost 13 years of my life and nearly died four times. I don’t want that to happen to anybody else.

“It’s not about food – food is the symptom, it’s not the cause.”

She adds: “When you’re encompassed by an eating disorder, which is a health illness, the misconception of it is that you chose to have an eating disorder.

“An eating disorder is not a choice. I definitely didn’t choose it.”

Gemma continues: “I had no idea what was going on.

“Sadly, it wasn’t until being in the depths of therapy and really starting to understand what an eating disorder was that I was actually able to address it.”

The actress recalls a point in her suffering when medics warned her that she had just 24 hours to live.

She has also stressed the importance of not judging whether somebody has an eating disorder based on their weight, as she opened up about her own experience with bullying.

Gemma remains adamant that “early intervention” is key when it comes to eating disorders and waiting for someone’s weight to change isn’t going to help.

“We have got to stop trying to treat a mental health illness by looking at physical attributes,” she insisted.

Talking of her own recovery, she explained that it stemmed from talking about it to her parents.

“When it comes to reaching out, an eating disorder loves confrontation,” the actress explained.

Emmerdale fans fear for soap favourite with shock exit planned

Spoilers released by Emmerdale seem to hint that long-standing character Jimmy King could be set to exit the ITV soap.

The soap-land favourite found himself charged with death by dangerous driving after a devastating crash last month, and now teasers appear to show him preparing to plead guilty to the charge, which could see him jailed for a long time.

Actor Nick Miles has been on the show since 2004, so could he be making a shock departure?

Jimmy will leave his wife Nicola King mortified when he confirms his intentions following his recent charge, blaming himself over Paul Ashdale’s death, The Mirror reports.

Paul died after Jimmy crashed his lorry into the farm building he was in with Liv Flaherty, after he veered off the road at high speed.

Jimmy was worried something was wrong with Nicola and that son Carl was being kidnapped, leading to him speeding back to the village in low sunlight.

Unable to see ahead, he crashed straight into the building injuring both Paul and Liv, before the lorry and the barn exploded.

Jimmy and Liv barely survived, while Paul later died from his injuries.

The police have charged him with death by dangerous driving, and a guilty Jimmy decides to accept his fate and admit blame.

Speaking to Nicola, he reveals he plans to plead guilty to the charge which could carry a long prison sentence.

But does this mean we could be bidding farewell to the character soon?

He isn’t the only one feeling the guilt, as Liv is hiding the fact she left an injured Paul in the barn and didn’t help him just before the explosion.

She will relapse in upcoming scenes, turning to alcohol to try and forget her actions which will soon be exposed – while fans will argue her actions were warranted given he was beating her up in the barn just as the crash happened.

Charley Webb: Emmerdale star details fears as son gets long hair cut off 'I'm so nervous!'

“I can’t ever imagine writing to somebody and being negative saying. ‘I don’t like the way you look’. It’s just not normal.”

The soap star previously shared a photo of her eldest son Buster wearing a T-shirt branded with the words: “Long hair, don’t care.”

She captioned the post: “I get asked so many times on here why my kids have got long hair. ‘Why don’t you cut it?’ Or, ‘they look like girls’.

“The answer is really simple, because we like it and more importantly they like it. I absolutely don’t feel like I need to explain it to anyone who has an opinion but I just think life would be so much easier if we all just focused on our own lives.

“Don’t let my kids hair worry you. I think people think they have a right to have an opinion because of social media. Maybe you do. But try keeping it to yourself, it’s not important to us what you think of how our kids look.”
