Multiple Miami-area buildings have been evacuated since the Champlain Towers South collapse

Ahead of the demolition at the South tower, the condominium board for Champlain Towers East suggested residents evacuate, according to a letter from the condo association’s board of directors obtained by CNN.

The letter encouraged residents to evacuate in advance as streets nearby would be congested due to the demolition. The board also asked residents to take their pets and valuables, including passports and important documents, with them.

The letter encouraged residents to evacuate in advance as streets nearby would be congested due to the demolition. The board also asked residents to take their pets and valuables, including passports and important documents, with them.

“Our building foundation has been checked multiple times, but we make this suggestion in an abundance of caution,” the letter reads. “We do not expect any impact to us but you can’t be too careful under the circumstances.”

On Saturday, the city of Miami Beach ordered the evacuation of a residential building out of an abundance of caution after a city inspector looked at an empty unit and flagged a “flooring system failure in that unit and excessive deflection on an exterior wall,” according to city spokesperson Melissa Berthier.

The day before, North Miami Beach officials ordered the evacuation of the Crestview Towers, saying the building was delinquent with its 40-year recertification. Officials cited the late certification report to say the building was structurally and electrically unsafe.

Many residents of Champlain Towers South whose condos didn’t collapse had to evacuate without many of their belongings, leaving behind clothes, valuables and family photographs.

On Sunday, Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez III said homicide detectives had been “collecting items that are retrievable, and are logging them and documenting them.”

Any type of heirloom that was safe to retrieve is being documented to “be addressed at a later date with family members,” he said.

Hundreds of thousands evacuated in India as worst cyclone for two decades hits

The India Meteorological Department (IMD )confirmed that the powerful storm made landfall at 10.30pm local time (3.30pm BST) on Monday. The “extremely severe cyclonic storm” has been dubbed the worst the country has seen in 20 years.
The IMD tweeted on Monday: “At 2230 IST – centre of the cyclone now lies overland about 20kms East-northeast of Diu.

“The landfall process will continue for next 2hrs.”

The agency first classed Cyclone Tauktae as an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” but later confirmed it had weakened into a “very severe cyclonic storm”.

More than 200,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Gujarat on the west coast.

Ports and an airport in the state were shuttered as the cyclone approached the region.

The storm has so far caused 12 fatalities in the states of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra.

Gujarat’s revenue secretary, Pankaj Kumar issued a stark warning ahead of the cyclone’s landfall.

He said: “This will be the most severe cyclone to hit Gujarat in at least 20 years.

“This can be compared with the 1998 cyclone that hit Kandla and inflicted heavy damage.”

The devastating storm comes as India struggles to tackle the ongoing coronavirus emergency that has so far led to more than 274,000 deaths.

Udaya Regmi, head of delegation at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, highlighted the crippling effect of Cyclone Tauktae amid the current health crisis.

He said: “This cyclone is a terrible double blow for millions of people in India whose families have been struck down by record Covid infections and deaths.

“Many families are barely staying afloat.”

Israeli airstrike makes 13-story building collapse as raid sirens go off– locals evacuated

Footage shows a large residential building collapsing in Gaza which was part of an Israeli missile retaliation as reports say air raid sirens and explosions are heard in Tel Aviv following the building’s collapse. Israeli forces fired warning shots ahead of the attack to warn those nearby to vacate the area with hostilities between Palestinian militants and Israeli armed forces getting worse. The two sides clashed at Jerusalem holy site earlier this week which led to Hamas launching several rockets towards Israel from Gaza earlier this week which has forced Israel to react with their own airstrikes that have killed at least 28 Palestinians.
Hundreds were left injured during clashes in Jerusalem earlier this week as Israeli police and Palestinians clashed at the holy Haram al-Sharif site in East Jerusalem.

The area is sacred to both Israelis and Palestinians with Hamas urging Israeli police to be withdrawn from the area.

Clashes erupted with footage showing police and Palestinians clashing including one video of a Muslim being kicked on the ground while praying.

Tensions have been building in the weeks prior as Israeli developers have been more forceful in displacing Palestinians after setting up more settlements around the region.

Palestinian militants have fired 400 missiles towards Israel since Monday with at least two Israelis killed.

Israel responded with airstrikes of their own which targetted over 150 sites.

Recent footage shows the 13-story building collapsing but with no casualties yet reported.

Reports suggested Israeli forces fired warning shots from drones to encourage people to leave the area and to not be killed.

The international community has urged both sides to calm tensions down with  US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stating Hamas rocket attacks must end “immediately”.

The European Union said both sides should “respect the status quo” of the holy sites and Israeli police should show “restraint” in the violence.

Palestinian medics have said they have faced difficulty getting to the wounded and have even suffered several injuries themselves when they were allegedly attacked by Israeli police.
