British No 1 Dan Evans joins Tokyo Olympics exodus after testing positive for coronavirus

Dan Evans has become the latest high-profile player to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics. The British number one has joined Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Johanna Konta in withdrawing from the Games after testing positive for coronavirus.

Evans was due to compete alongside Andy Murray in the men’s singles in Japan but revealed on Wednesday evening that he will not be travelling to the event.

The 31-year-old reached the third round at Wimbledon before suffering a four-set defeat against the unseeded American Sebastian Korda.

Federer pulled out of the Olympics due to a knee injury picked up at Wimbledon, while Konta missed the Grand Slam due to self-isolation and later confirmed she had tested positive for coronavirus.

Evans’ withdrawal leaves the Team GB contingent very thin on the ground, with Murray, Heather Watspn and Wimbledon mixed doubles champion Neal Skupski now the only confirmed British players at the Olympics.

The Olympics have been rocked by high-profile withdrawals over the past few weeks.

As well as 20-time Grand Slam duo Nadal and Federer, Nick Kyrgios, Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov and Stan Wawrinka are also not competing in Tokyo.

Murray will defend the title he won at Rio 2016, but women’s champion Monica Puig is one of many absentees.

The Olympics run from Friday, 23 July to Sunday, 8 August, with 339 events in 33 sports set to take place.

The tennis event runs from Saturday, 24 July to Sunday, 1 August on the hard courts at Ariake Tennis Park.

The Games will take place in empty stadiums, with coronavirus restrictions heightened and Tokyo in a state of emergency following a spike of infections.

Chris Evans’ ex co-star Gaby Roslin still asked if pair ever had romance after ‘sex dream’

Chris Evans, 55, and Gaby Roslin, 56, presented The Big Breakfast together for two years from 1992 up until his departure in 1994. Reflecting on their time together, the latter discussed how their on-air antics used to spark reaction from viewers and how broadcasting has changed 30 years on.

Recalling one particular time, the presenter discussed the moment Chris spilled to viewers that she had a “sex dream” about him, which she told him off camera.

While Gaby has never revealed further details about the dream, it has definitely stuck with fans over the years.

She revealed: “It is extraordinary how still, all these years later, people say, ‘Did anything happen romantically with you and Chris?’ and I say, ‘No, but I did have a sex dream about him once’.

“I remember I came into the show one day as usual and said, ‘Oh my God, Chris, I had a sex dream about you’.

“Then we started the show live at 7am and his first words to the nation were, ‘Welcome to the Big Breakfast. Gaby, You had a sex dream about me last night, didn’t you?’

“Imagine that on BBC Breakfast today?”

The pair have always denied they were ever more than friends.

At present, she is married to David Osmon, while Chris tied the knot with Natasha Shishmanian in 2007.

Gaby said she is still “extremely close” to the Virgin Radio Breakfast presenter and revealed they still laugh about the things they used to get away with.

Gaby’s ex co-star took over the breakfast slot after moving from BBC Radio 2 in 2019.

Earlier this year, she stepped in Kate Lawler’s shoes for her Drivetime Show.

Speaking at the time, she told Chris: “I’m so scared! I’m properly nervous about it. I’m nerv-cited is what we always say.

“It’s the best feeling in the world being nerv-cited.”

On always being upbeat, she added: “I don’t like reigning it in. I’ve never reigned it in.

‘People went mad’ Gaby Roslin defends Chris Evans after ‘disgusting’ on air story backlash

“I did have PMT, so what’s the problem? We definitely aired a few things you would not see today.”

Off-camera, the presenter also confessed to Chris that she had a “sex dream” about him.

Much to her surprise at the time, he decided to tell listeners.

“Imagine that on BBC Breakfast today,” she continued, adding she believes television nowadays is missing “irreverent, crazy, talk/everything” shows.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s ‘weird’ Euro 2020 appearance called out by Chris Evans

Prince William, Kate Middleton and their eldest son George were joined by 40,000 supporters at Wembley stadium for England’s clash against Germany in Euro 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge caught the attention of Chris Evans, who questioned the couple’s match appearance.

Speaking on his self-titled Virgin Radio Breakfast Show today, the radio DJ admitted he was baffled why the trio appeared socially distanced while watching the game.

The broadcaster said he was unsure why the royals stood so far apart from one another, as they are living in the same household.

“William, Kate and George were there,” Chris began.

“They were socially distancing from each other and they’re in the same bubble.”

Chris remarked: “Where was Prince Harry? We know he is in the country.”

He cheekily addressed the brothers’ rumoured rift, as the radio DJ joked he was sure Prince Harry wished they had made up before the big football game.

“I bet he’s thinking, ‘Why didn’t I make up with my brother before the game?'” Chris joked.

Prince Harry has returned to Britain for the unveiling of a statue in honour of his late mother, Diana, the Princess of Wales.

Chris Evans: Virgin Radio host opens up on family tears as his twins mark new milestone

Virgin Radio Breakfast Show host Chris Evans, 55, has revealed that there will be tears in his house this week as he candidly addressed a family milestone while chatting to his co-stars. The media personality has two-year-old twins Walt and Boo with wife Natasha Shishmanian, and he announced live on-air that the duo would be taking a big step by starting nursery today.
Talking about the passing of time on his breakfast show, the star went on to say that memories are either “a minute ago, or 100 years ago”.

After celebrating a listener’s birthday on air, the star added that his son Noah is also the same age.

“He’s 12, he’s catching up”, he added, before dropping a huge milestone for his family.

“The twins go to nursery for the first time tomorrow”, he revealed.

Chris’ co-host Rachel Horne sharply inhaled before simply commenting, “tears”.

“Rivers, rivers, flood warnings, amber warning in our house all week this week,” he added.

Rachel asked: “Has Tash got an exit strategy for when she drops them off?” referring to Chris’ wife Natasha.

“She needs to have something that she’s going to do”, she added.

At the end of last year, the DJ told his Virgin Radio co-stars that it’s highly unlikely that he and his wife will have any more children after noticing how she’s “developing and evolving” as a person.

He told his colleagues: “I think that Tash is very secretly gearing up to become a yoga teacher.”

“I think now, this is the biggest heads-up that we’re not going to have any more children because obviously she’s not going to tell me either way!”

The radio DJ confessed everything his wife would need to have another child is “done”, while revealing she can access “something, somewhere” that requires his signature every 12-months should she change her mind.

“I’m like, ‘Why am I signing this?’ and she says, ‘It doesn’t matter just sign it, don’t worry about it’,” he giggled.

With four children all under the age of 15, Chris believed their twins were the last two they would welcome into the family.

The star’s ex-wives include actress Billie Piper and Loose Women panellist Carol McGiffin.

Chris and his professional golfer wife married in 2007 and held their wedding reception in Portugal, which was attended by Chris’ ex Billie.

Lee Evans, record-setting sprinter and Olympic gold medalist, dies at 74

Lee Evans was the first man to crack 44 seconds in the 400 meters, winning the gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Games in 43.86.

LAGOS, Nigeria — Lee Evans, the record-setting sprinter who wore a black beret in a sign of protest at the 1968 Olympics, died Wednesday. He was 74.
USA Track and Field confirmed Evans’ death. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Evans’ family had started a fundraiser in hopes of bringing him back to the U.S. from Nigeria, where he coached track, to receive medical care after he suffered a stroke last week.
Evans became the first man to crack 44 seconds in the 400 meters, winning the gold medal at the Mexico City Games in 43.86. His victory came shortly after his teammates, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, were sent home from the Olympics for raising their fists on the medals stand.
In later interviews, Evans said an official warned him not do anything similar. He took a different approach, wearing a black beret to show support for the Black Panther Party and other civil rights organizations.
Like Smith and Carlos, Evans was a college star on the San Jose State “Speed City” teams. He was also a high-profile member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights, which called attention to racial inequality and oppression and spearheaded the protests at the 1968 games.
“His legacy of contributions to sports and the struggle for social justice is indelible and enduring,” tweeted Harry Edwards, the architect of the movement.
After running the 43.86, Evans anchored the U.S. 4×400 team to a world record of 2 minutes, 56.16 seconds. The 400 record stood for almost 20 years. The relay record stood for 24.
Evans won five U.S. titles at 400 meters and is a member of both the USATF and U.S. Olympic halls of fame.
After he stopped running competitively, Evans spent ample time in Africa, working for the United Nations, and also coaching national teams in Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. The Mercury News said he was currently coaching high school track in Lagos.

'Would someone focus on the show!' Chris Evans scolds co-hosts for being on their phones

Rachel burst out laughing as the radio DJ, who famously got rid of his own mobile phone years before and has refused to have one ever since, asked her what she was doing.

“I had a message from Alex [husband],” she admitted, “And I alway check it if it’s from Alex incase it’s to do with the kids.

“But it wasn’t, so I didn’t reply.”

Chris interrupted: “And now you’ve turned your phone over… You’ve done the thing people do in restaurants, they think if you turn your phone over it’s alright then!” he snapped.

Next James Bond: Luke Evans closes in on Tom Hardy for new 007

This week Hardy saw a boost in his popularity as the trailer for his film Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage was released. The British star has long been one of the favourites to take on the James Bond role after Craig steps down later this year following No Time To Die, but things aren’t looking good for the Bane actor.
In the past few months, a flurry of bets have changed the landscape of the Bond betting.

Over Christmas Netflix actor Regé-Jean Page became an overnight sensation with bookies after appearing in raunchy period drama, Bridgerton.

The British-Zimbabwean star subsequently topped the betting for 007, where he remains today.

At the moment Ladbrokes have given Page a staggering 2/1 on becoming the next Bond after Craig, making him the best bet for now.

However, the star could be dethroned after Beauty and the Beast actor Evans continues to rise up the ranks.

The Welsh actor recently had his odds slashed by the bookies to an impressive 4/1 – and his odds keep improving.

Earlier this month the booking agent revealed every “three in four bets” for the next Bond were for Evans, rather than Hardy or Page.

Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati commented: “Luke Evans is currently the punters’ pick to replace Daniel Craig and his odds have drastically tumbled as a result.”

Evans added: “It will be an exciting casting moment for the Bond production and I wish whoever gets it the best of luck.”

Of course, fans cannot forget about James Norton.

Although he hasn’t hit headlines as much as the other British contenders, Norton has maintained a powerful 3/1 odds with the bookies.

The McMafia actor still has the opportunity to claim the spot before the next film is released.

Whichever actor next takes on the mantle of Bond may have an entirely different theme to him.

Recent talks have sparked over what the next movie’s theme ought to sound like, with music producer Fraser T Smith suggesting it ought to employ a rapper rather than a singer, commenting: “It’s time, isn’t it?”

Smith added: “It could be Stormzy. With a John Barry-esque futuristic beat. It already sounds like something!”

Ladbrokes gave Stormzy 2/1 odds on getting the theme song after No Time To Die.

James Bond No Time To Die is due out on September 30, 2021.

Captain America 4 movie confirmed: Will Chris Evans return as Steve Rogers?

Back in January, Hollywood commentator Grace Randolph said she had heard that Evans had been in talks over the New Year to return to his iconic role.

All the speculation at the time centred on a possible appearance in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, rather than a new Captain America film.

This would allow Evans to reprise the role but with a twist, perhaps playing the iconic ‘evil Captain America’ from the comics who is a secret HYDRA sleeper agent.

But now the door is wide open again, following the latest news.
