Airline bosses demand a green list expansion – ‘can’t go through another ruined summer'

The bosses of easyJet, Jet2, Tui, Loganair and Manchester Airports Group (MAG) have joined forces and sent a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson to get the green list expanded. They have asked the Government to drive down the cost of testing and agreed that the Balearics and Canaries should be added to the list next.
“The UK proposes expensive testing even on green list countries.

“We’re saying ‘Expand the green list, get rid of this confusion over amber and make good on the promise to drive down the cost of testing.”

Jet2 and Jet2Holidays CEO, Steve Heapy, explained: “If you look at the data for a large number of countries they could be on the green list.

“The Government is being over cautious and the green list could be increased with very little risk [given] 60 percent of the UK population have had one dose of vaccine and 35 percent two doses.”

He continued: “The Government also needs to look at the people who have had the vaccine.

“At the moment there is no benefit from that.

“The Government approach is ultra-cautious [and] we are being left behind.”

All the bosses agreed that islands like the Balearics or the Canaries, in Spain, should be added to the list immediately.

TUI UK managing director, Andrew Flintham, said: “Other European countries are looking at us with incredulity.

“Some islands like the Balearics and Canaries could move to the green list.”

MAG chief executive Charlie Cornish said: “We need more countries on the green list [and] if you travel to a green country you should not be subject to tests.

“Green should mean green and you should travel without restrictions.”

He explained: “There are a number of countries – the Balearics, the Canary Islands – which should be on the list now.

“The industry will be hugely disappointed if the Government doesn’t add more countries.”

The airlines claimed that they are not receiving enough support and urged the Government to step up.

Easyjet CEO warned: “The UK industry can’t go through another ruined summer without grave consequences and in that case the Government has to step up with a plan.

“First we want travel to restart in a safe way. That is the foremost thing. If for any reason that does not take place, we need the Government to step in to support this industry.

“This industry was the first hit, it was the hardest hit and it looks like it will be the last to come out.”

Loganair CEO Jonathan Hinkles agreed: “The industry can’t cope with what would be a fifth winter season in succession.

“We need more countries on the green list.”

Classic cars could be 'scrapped' ahead of Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ expansion

The new updates would see the current ULEZ expanded to an extra 140,000 motorists at the end of October. The scheme will cover roads between the North and South Circular Roads with drivers charged £12.50 per day to drive a heavy polluting vehicle.
He said: “I use it on a weekly basis and it just won’t make sense to pay £12.50 a time to drive it.

“I have another car, a Range Rover, which I could use instead but I think I will change the Bentley for something older that’s exempt.

“I’m lucky that I can afford to do this, but a lot of people won’t be able to.

“It’s also sad as I think this will be like when the scrappage scheme was introduced, and a lot of historic cars were scrapped because owners were given an incentive.”

“I would say that at least 30 to 40 per cent of our cars will be caught in the ULEZ zone now and I know some people have decided to change their fleets, getting rid of the cars that don’t comply.”

Jude Currie, a 19-year-old car enthusiast has toured London offering to buy classics before they are sold for scrap.

He said: “At the end of last year in Greenwich, I saved a 1995 Hyundai Elantra. It was one of seven left on the roads.

“And I managed to save it for scrap value because it just failed an MOT and the owner didn’t see the point of getting the work done to pass because he had to sell it this year anyway, because of ULEZ.

However, historic vehicles aged 40 years of age will be exempt from the new charge.

The newly re-elected London mayor said he has an “overwhelming mandate” to press ahead with his green initiatives.

Transport for London said the new ULEZ extension will improve air quality across the capital.

They said any money received from the ULEZ will be reinvested to improve the transport network and further improve air quality.

Wrath of the Druids is connected to the main campaign, doesn’t require a specific power level, and unlocks once players have arrived in England and completed either the Grantebridgescire or Ledecestrescire arcs. There’s a whole new land of mystery and adventure to explore, so load up the longship and get ready to see what happens when druids and Vikings clash.

Japan's Nomura still betting on global expansion to lift profit, despite Archegos hit

By Makiko Yamazaki

TOKYO (Reuters) – Nomura Holdings (NYSE:) Inc raised its pretax income target for the next fiscal year by 14%, showing the long-cherished ambitions of Japan’s top brokerage and investment bank to join the global elite remain undimmed, despite sustaining a near $ 3 billion hit from the collapse of U.S. investment fund Archegos.

Setting out guidance in a mid-term presentation, Nomura on Wednesday said it was basing its raised target on a strategy of developing its footprint in global private markets, taking in business with unlisted companies, like private equity funds, as well as services for wealthier private clients.

Nomura now estimates 320 billion yen ($ 2.94 billion) in pretax income for its three core divisions in the year from April next year, citing strength in wholesale arm, comprising global markets and investment banking.

The new target raises the bar from the 280 billion yen profit targeted in an estimate issued a year ago, and represents a 29% jump from the 247.6 billion yen it posted for the year ended in March 2021.

The raised ambitions come soon after the implosion of Archegos, a family office run by Bill Hwang that failed to meet margin calls on heavily leveraged stock bets, rekindled concerns about Nomura’s global expansion strategy.

Chief Executive Kentaro Okuda told a media briefing on Wednesday that Nomura has exited more than 99% of its Archegos-related positions and reiterated that it has no plans to shy away from the prime brokerage business.

But he added that the bank would reduce prime brokerage transactions that only provide credit using stocks as collateral.

The upward profit target revision is driven by a higher forecast for the wholesale division, which is expected to post a profit of 150 billion yen for April 2022-March 2023, more than double the 64.3 billion yen posted for the year just ended.

Earnings at Nomura’s wholesale arm, which includes overseas operations, have been highly volatile since its disastrous 2008 acquisition of Lehman Brothers’ Asian and European businesses, forcing the bank to repeatedly implement drastic cost cuts.

In an effort to expand stable revenue sources, Nomura now targets a 50% income growth in the advisory business and a 40% increase from private equity and private debt markets, which includes businesses with unlisted companies, over the next few years.

Tesla’s expansion plans in China put on hold due to US tariffs

US electric car producer Tesla has reportedly held off on plans to buy land to expand its plant in the Chinese province of Shanghai and turn it into the company’s global export hub, as uncertainty over US-China relations grows.

Tesla refrained from bidding on a plot of land that is in close quarters to its factory, according to unnamed sources familiar with the matter, as quoted by Reuters.

With an annual capacity of up to 500,000 vehicles, the company’s Shanghai plant is currently manufacturing Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at a rate of 450,000 units per year.

Earlier, the automaker was reportedly planning to increase the capacity of the existing production lines to expand exports of its China-made Model 3 to more markets, including the US, according to sources. The company currently ships China-made Model 3s to Europe.

However, with 25% tariffs on imported Chinese electric cars imposed, on top of existing levies introduced under former US President Donald Trump still in place, the automaker is planning to put limits on the share of China output in its global production.
Also on rt.com Tesla will ‘get shut down’ if used for spying in any country, Musk says after reports of restrictions on vehicles in China
Tesla’s sales in China, where the company managed to generate $ 3 billion in revenue in the first three months of 2021 alone, are growing, despite constant regulatory pressure in the country.

The automaker faces intense scrutiny in China over safety and customer-service concerns about vehicle cameras, battery fires, unexpected acceleration and failures in over-the-air software updates. Moreover, Tesla is also under close attention from Chinese watchdogs over how the company handles data.

Waitrose scraps two hour rapid delivery service as it begins Deliveroo expansion

Waitrose launched its rapid delivery service back in 2018. Waitrose Rapid enabled shoppers in certain areas to have up to 25 grocery items delivered within two hours or less on the same day of ordering.
The supermarket chain told customers on Monday that its home delivery service would end on May 28.

Waitrose said its service would finish at the end of the month “because Rapid and Deliveroo were operating in the same market with lots of overlap…So we’ve decided to stop Rapid and focus solely on our Deliveroo partnership.

“Through Deliveroo our customers can order our food for delivery in as little as 20 minutes, and we are also able to grow the service much faster than Rapid, to reach more customers in more areas.”

The chain has also significantly increased the number of home delivery slots on its website throughout the past year in order to keep up with customer demands.

Waitrose said: “The good news is that you can still order all your favourite Waitrose groceries and everyday essentials from waitrose.com, with one-hour delivery slots and a minimum spend of £40.”

Waitrose’s long-held partnership with Ocado also came to an end last year, when it was replaced by Marks and Spencer.

The pandemic has shifted consumer behaviour and meant that many more Britons are having groceries delivered to their homes.

Sainsbury’s has also been expanding its speedy Chop Chop service as well as having partnerships with both Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Toussaint Wattinne, Uber Eats General Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Sainsbury’s, offering over 1,000 fresh grocery and essential items for speedy delivery via the Uber Eats app.

“The addition of these new stores will provide greater convenience for customers across the country at a time when home delivery options are so important.”

The news comes as England is about to head into stage three of the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Although this means relaxation of the current rules, supermarkets still have strict guidance in place that must be followed.

Customers must still wear face masks in store as well as stay away from other shoppers.

Supermarkets have updated their rules regularity in line with government guidance.

Medical marijuana expansion bill

AUSTIN (Nexstar) — More Texans would qualify for medicinal marijuana under an expansion of the state’s Compassionate Use program, which passed the Texas House.

House Bill 1535 grows the state’s medical marijuana program to include all Texans with cancer. People with chronic pain and debilitating medical conditions would also qualify. HB 1535 was amended Wednesday to include all forms of diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), rather than for veterans with PTSD as it was initially introduced.

“We need to include [survivors] in that sexual assault is more likely to cause PTSD than any other event,” State Rep. Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, said Wednesday.

The legislation also raises the limit for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)— the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana— from 0.5% to 5% by weight.

The bill must be read a third time on the House floor for final passage. If it clears the House, it heads to the Senate for approval.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety records, there were 4,919 patients in the system.
