Summary

  • Second Extinction Product Owner Julianne Harty welcomes Xbox players to the game.
  • Learn more about what’s in store as well as detailing a core part of Second Extinction, The War Effort.
  • Second Extinction (Game Preview) is available now with Xbox Game Pass.

Welcome to Second Extinction.

We’re excited to bring you our dinosaur co-op shooter to Xbox Game Preview and Xbox Game Pass! During our time in Preview, we’re going to be listening to what you, the community, expect and desire out of a game like ours. Please add your voice to our Discord group; I read every piece of feedback entered in our feedback channels.

Since we’ve been live on PC for a short period, we’ve already identified a few improvements and added these to the roadmap towards 1.0. Cross-play functionality is a significant step, and we’re looking at releasing that in September. This means you will be able to play with your PC friends and vice versa. Additionally, we include a tutorial mission to onboard new players at launch! Also on the agenda are new characters, new weapons, new equipment, and more dinosaur mutations to battle with, as well as the much-requested Horde Mode.

Second Extinction

As a team, we’re going to start looking in-depth at reward and motivation systems over the coming months. Are we giving out cool and useful stuff? Do you feel adequately rewarded for your efforts? Do you feel a sense of progression and motivated to try new things out? Killing those evil mutated dinosaurs is fun, but we want to make sure it’s meaningful as well.

The War Effort will start to get built out more robustly. For those unfamiliar with what the War Effort is, it entails a map of varying threat levels over the area. A high threat level means the dinos are strong and heavy in that region; conversely, a low threat level means a much easier walk in the snow.

Second Extinction

Twice a week – Mondays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. CEST (4:00 a.m. PT)-  the map will update based on the amount of research the entire community has gathered, assigning threat levels (increasing stages of difficulty) to each region. The dinos do push back, so if everyone focused their attention on one area of the map to drop the threat level, the dinos will find a more neglected region and increase their attention there, which subsequently increases the region’s threat level. Neglect a Threat Level 3 region too long, and you’ll encounter an Emergence Event – an extreme region with combat-changing modifiers and boss-level fights.

Associated with each War Effort map update is a rotation of activities tied to each threat level. Building out the War Effort means that there will be more activities and events associated with each change of the map and their threat levels so that you’ll see new things each week. Each Preseason will bring a new set of these activities as well, in addition to new contracts and exclusive cosmetics. Make sure to play during these times!

Second Extinction

Looking towards 1.0, as we finish refining our systems and features to all our satisfaction (yours and ours), we’re taking our learnings and applying them to a new biome with new missions and species. I can’t reveal much more since it’s still far in the future, but rest assured, we’re working on adding new maps.

We’ll be launching into Xbox Game Preview at the start of Preseason 4. However, we will be making the pre-season 2 contracts and rewards available further into Preseason 4 for our players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S so that you don’t miss out on the exclusive content. We will make Preseason 3 content available during a future season for a limited time. We’ll leave none of our newly joined Extinction Elites behind.

I can’t wait to see you in our community!

This game is a work in progress. It may or may not change over time or release as a final product. Purchase only if you are comfortable with the current state of the unfinished game. A NEW BREED OF BIG MAP MULTIPLAYER SHOOTER The goal is simple: Reclaim earth. In Second Extinction you take on hordes of mutated dinosaurs with up to two friends. Solo players beware: Second Extinction is designed with squads in mind. Only the strong will survive. GAME PREVIEW IS JUST THE BEGINNING The goal of Game Preview is also simple: Work with our community to make the best game possible. We want to hear your feedback loud and clear, and we intend for our community to be a vital part of the development process. Even so, there’s plenty to get your teeth (and claws) into from day one: 4 heroes, 10 weapons (with 5 upgrade tiers each) and 6 missions – plus some special side quests – across multiple regions of our big map. JOIN THE WAR EFFORT, SHAPE THE FUTURE Our mantra is that players win battles, communities win wars. Nowhere is this more true than our War Effort feature. Each region of our big map has a unique threat level. This threat level can be lowered if enough of our players are successful in their missions and activities. But the dinosaurs aren’t resting either, and they’ll focus their efforts where you aren’t. Each week the community will see the fruits of their labors or feel the consequence of their incompetence. Let the threat level get out of control and you can expect an especially tough Emergence Event to be waiting for you. By playing Second Extinction you’re not just picking up another co-op shooter. You’re joining us on a journey as we shape the experience. Every piece of feedback and every mission you play matters. So what are you waiting for? The fight to reclaim earth starts here. Second Extinction (Game Preview): What to Know Before Taking Earth Back from Mutated Dinosaurs

Summary

  • Xbox players can join the fight today in Second Extinction (Game Preview) and follow along with the community using #ReclaimEarth on Twitter.
  • The game is releasing today via the Xbox Game Preview program and with Xbox Game Pass for Console and PC.
  • Before we throw you to the dinosaurs, there’s a few things that are good to know…

It’s finally time for players to join the fight and reclaim Earth from the mutated dinosaurs who currently rule in Second Extinction (Game Preview).

Having the game available today via the Game Preview program with Xbox Game Pass on Day One is beyond thrilling and will allow us to shape the game together with you as we move towards a full release. But before we throw you to the dinosaurs, here’s a few things that could be good to know.

How did we end up here?

The dinosaurs we all thought to be extinct have been lying nestled in the Earth’s crust for millions of years, resting and waiting for the perfect circumstances to arise. And when they did, they were fast and ruthless. Within hours, everything had changed. In the face of total annihilation, the directors of the Emergency Response Agency (ERA) organized planetary evacuations.

Now, years later, the human resistance has regrouped and is finally ready to fight back. Squads of survivors with relevant experience will be dropping back to Earth from orbiting space stations to gather essential resources, weapons, and information about the dinosaurs. And this is where you, our Extinction Elites, come in.

It’s worth mentioning is that Second Extinction is not a lore-focused game, but you will get clues and winks in the seasonal content on what has gone down and how the dinosaurs ended up becoming the mutated beasts they are. So, if that is something you fancy, keep an eye out.

Squad up!

Why 3-player co-op, you might wonder? Early in development, the team played around with different setups and ideas. What worked best was a 3-player squad, and so Second Extinction was designed with that in mind. That doesn’t mean you can’t drop down to Earth with only one friend joining or going in solo but do so at your own risk. It’s quite the challenge that deserves bragging rights if you survive, especially in the higher difficulty settings.

If I can’t talk you into bringing some backup when going planet-side, I recommend starting with Expedition Mode, where you can roam the map freely and can call in a dropship to get you when you’re ready to go back to safety.

Who’s your pick?

We currently have five heroes who fit into three classes. We have our Troopers, the agile DPS class where we have the dashing Ortega and stealth sniper Jürgen. Next up, we have the Enforcers, our brutes, or tanks with the big and heavy guns only an exo-suit carrying hero can handle. Here you find Rosy and our newest addition to the lineup Jack. Finally, we have the Operators, the gadgety-class where we find our explosion and laser loving Amir.

Besides their different strengths, the classes also determine what guns that character gets to play with. For example, the Enforcers have the Rocket Launcher, and the Operators have the Grenade Launcher. Whoever you’re leaning towards, I recommend trying them all out to see what works best for you and your playstyle.

How does progression work?

Remember the Rocket Launcher? It unlocks at level 15. The more you play and gather research and materials, the higher level you will reach, and on the journey to the current max level of 25, you’ll unlock some rocking gear and weapons.

You can also use the research and materials you gather to upgrade and unlock weapon perks. Make sure you don’t avoid killing any dinosaurs you find challenging. They drop different materials, and the ones you need for the cool perks are, of course, on the rarer side, so be versatile in what types you kill. Or just kill all of them.

Below you can see the Scout Rifle skill tree. There are a set number of tokens that can be used and placed strategically so make sure to try different combinations and experiment to find what perks work best for you.

Where to speak your mind

As the community manager, I want to hear as many individual voices as possible to understand what the community thinks. To reduce the risk of your feedback getting lost and keeping it as efficient as possible, you’re invited to gather on our Discord server.

Since our Early Access release on Steam last October, our Discord has been the community’s base of operations. It is the place to talk to other players, ask questions, give feedback, and get in touch with the development team. We also have weekly challenges and a poll every Monday to get the community’s opinion on game-focused questions. It’d be greatly appreciated if you want to be part of the community to join our Discord and make your voice heard. If you’re interested in influencing what the future holds, this is the best way to make sure we hear you loud and clear.

See you on the battlegrounds and on our social channels!

Xbox Game Pass May 2021 new games: Second Extinction, FIFA 21 and Knockout City

Microsoft has partially revealed the Xbox Game Pass line-up for May 2021.

It all begins later this week with Second Extinction and Destroy All Humans, followed by Dragon Quest Builders 2 on May 4.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers can download The Wild At Heart on May 20, while brand new EA release Knockout City joins the service on May 21.

Football fans will also be happy to find out that FIFA 21 is joining the line-up at some point during the month of May (via PureXbox).

Elsewhere, FIFA 15, FIFA 16, FIFA 17 and FIFA 18 will depart Xbox Game Pass on May 6.

It’s a pretty strong line-up of new games, especially the release of Knockout City and FIFA 21.

Knockout City is EA’s new multiplayer dodgeball game: “Team up and duke it out with rival Crews in Knockout City, where you settle the score with EPIC DODGEBALL BATTLES.

“Brace yourself for outrageous fun and intense competition in an all-new take on team-based multiplayer games.”

According to the official description, players will be able to fully customise their characters, plus unlock new ball types, locations and more.

“Customize your character and form a Crew with friends to start your Knockout City takeover.

“Knock out opponents with trick shots and coordinated teamwork while dodging and catching balls flying across the map. No ball? No problem! You can literally ball up, roll into a teammate’s hands, and become the ultimate weapon!

“A variety of outlandish ball types, locations, and game modes keep it exciting.

“Plus, each season introduces new maps, ball types, rewards, events, and challenges! Throw, catch, pass, dodge, and tackle your way to dodgeball dominance!”

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is another game worth playing. It’s like Minecraft mixed with a traditional Dragon Quest role-playing game.

“Embark on an epic journey and become the master Builder! Customize your character and set off to revive a forsaken world alongside a mysterious companion named Malroth.

“Then, take your builder online and join your friends to collaborate and create something truly magnificent.

“Don’t let the name fool you, despite the 2, this is a completely standalone experience featuring new characters, an expansive world, unlimited building combinations, and a storyline that’s sure to satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike!”

Second Extinction Xbox release time scheduled for Xbox Game Pass today

Second Extinction is a first-person shooter that has been available on Steam for some time but will soon drop onto Xbox Game Pass and the Microsoft Game Previews programme.

There are plenty of choices available on XGP, and Second Extinction is launching during a busy month for the subscription service.

Second Extinction releases on Thursday, April 28, sandwiched between MLB The Show 21 and Destroy All Humans, which arrives on April 29.

But while there are a lot of different games to choose from, Second Extinction stands out for its unique gameplay.

For those who might not have heard about it, the Second Extinction is a 3 player cooperative shooter where your goal is to wipe out mutated dinosaurs that have taken over the planet.

Gamers can choose between different characters called survivors, with different combinations of weapons and abilities available.

The official description explains: “Mutated dinosaurs have destroyed humanity, and the few survivors left have fled to space. Through short but intense guerilla missions, your specialized fireteam is being sent back to Earth to pick the invasion force apart. It’s time to take back our planet!

“Take on the role of one of the resistance fighters and team up with up to two other survivors to hit the enemy where it hurts. Combine your unique abilities, weapon loadouts and equipment for explosive results.

“Fighting dinosaurs has never felt this visceral, with non-stop explosive combat scenarios and adrenaline-pumping tension as your small and isolated team moves through the world, facing enemies of greater numbers or greater size.

“These dinosaurs are nothing like our history books indicated, with strange mutations that make them even more lethal. From electric raptors to behemoth t-rexes that tower over their smaller brethren, these vile creatures are hard to take down.

“Together with the rest of the community, your actions will shape the course of the war against the dinosaurs. Stay tuned, to see how you will make a difference in the coming war.”

WHAT TIME CAN YOU START PLAYING SECOND EXTINCTION?

Developers Systemic Reaction has confirmed that the Second Extinction release date on Xbox One on April 28.

And according to a tweet posted by the development team, the Second Extinction release time has been set for 1pm BST.

The message posted in April reads: “In just two days at 2pm CEST @Xbox players can join the fight to #ReclaimEarth. Make sure the right side wins!”

As mentioned above, Second Extinction will be available on Xbox Game Pass and Microsoft Game Preview.

And for those wanting to know more about the programme, you can find the quick FAQ listed below:

How does Xbox Game Preview work?

Xbox Game Preview games can be purchased and played like regular titles. Because the games are still in development, they might be missing content, contain bugs, or need extra balancing work that will come later via updates. Similarly, select Xbox One features like Share may also be unavailable until the final game is released. Once the game is purchased, you are entitled to every update as the game moves to its final commercial release as well as the final version of the game when it is finished.

How do I find Game Preview games?

Listing of current Xbox Game Preview titles are available in the Microsoft Store on Xbox One in a dedicated Game Preview section.
