Rio Ferdinand snubbed after dragging Sir Alex into Brexit debate during bizarre EU rant

The England legend has played a central part in the BBC’s coverage of the Three Lion’s incredible journey in Euro 2020 as they prepare to take on Ukraine in the quarter-finals this evening. He was spotted celebrating wildly alongside fellow pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer after England secured a historic 2-0 win over Germany. Ferdinand, who played 81 times for the national side and is one of the most decorated English footballers of all time, often uses his experience to give an expert insight into games.

But he also risked sparking the fury of Brexiteers when he commented on the prospect of the UK leaving the European Union (EU) just days before the vote in 2016.

He wrote on Facebook: “The question about our future in Europe isn’t about Conservative vs Labour, it’s not about which bunch of politicians we want running the country. It’s much bigger than that.

“It’s not about the next five years, it’s about the next 50. Probably even longer.

“It’s about the sort of country our kids are going to grow up in, and how the rest of the world will look at Britain from now on.

“And from all I’ve heard on both sides of this debate, I think our country is at a pretty important fork in the road, and the decision we make could take us to very different places.”

After his passionate opening remarks, Ferdinand stated that he is “for remaining part of the EU” and he gave three reasons for it – one of which bizarrely appeared to take inspiration from his former manager.

He stated: “I think that politics is a team game.

“I worked for the greatest manager of all time. Sir Alex Ferguson always taught us that no individual is bigger than the team, that just because we played for Man United – a massive, famous club – didn’t mean we could swan around doing our own thing.

“We had to work even harder, and be even more of a team, to get where we wanted to be. And I think Europe is a bit like that.

“For myself personally who struggles to make ends meet week-to-week with low wages and four kids, something needs to give.

“With all due respect Rio you don’t have the same worries as the majority of the population.”

Another added: “Rio, the advantages of being in the EU which you are talking about are the reason why it was made in the first place.

“But this union is not serving the purposes it was made for and clearly it does not look like it is going to.”

And a third claimed: “Rio we love you and you’ll always be a legend to us, but I’m sorry pal this is more scaremongering coming from the rich and mighty.

“We are all able to make our own choice without being told these unfound facts.”

A record sum of almost £5million has been bet with Betfair on hot 15/8 favourites England winning Euro 2020, as more of the public believe football is coming home than ever before.

Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand both surprised at Southgate decision for England vs Germany

“I’m surprised in one way but Gareth Southgate, knowing him being a defender when he played as well, so maybe not that surprised.

“But when you see the talent that we’ve got, especially in the attacking wide areas, the young fearless talent, and none of them are really playing today, it does surprise me in that sense.

“But what I will say he may be thinking [is] the impact they may have off the bench when it gets into the latter stages, so that could maybe be a ploy.”

“Dias and Stones at the back were impenetrable, and Foden and Mahrez I thought were fantastic going forward.

“Fernandinho the captain today put in a real sterling performance at 36 years of age. Every man played their part today, fantastic performance.

“Great, great performance from this very, very good top team.”

Shortly after Cree was born, she admitted she didn’t love her post baby figure.

She candidly wrote: “Ahhh 😨 … nerves kicking in again, but here goes. Let’s talk post pregnancy body 🤰🏼.

“I’ve really held off on uploading any pictures with my body in because last time I did, for some reason, I felt all types of nerves and ended up deleting it … hormones, or the pressure of Instagram to look a certain way?

“I’m finally starting to slowly feel more like ‘me’ again, but it hasn’t been plain sailing.

“I was seeing lots of ladies, and I salute you, saying they love and embrace their post pregnancy body; I wish I felt like that but in all honesty … I love that my body produced our baby BUT quite frankly, I don’t love my post baby body. I miss feeling fit & strong!”

For the occasion, the blonde beauty teamed a nude bodysuit with an oversized green blazer and matching bottoms.

The new mum captioned the post: “First night out in what feels like forever so of course that warrants a photo shoot right? 🙊📸 …

“In fact the last time I went out and had a drink was March 2020 😮🤣 Wish me luck … 🍹❤️🍴🥰”

Ferdinand calls De Gea's next move after being benched by Solskjaer

Rio Ferdinand thinks there is “no chance” David de Gea will stay at Manchester United beyond the summer[1] after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferred Dean Henderson in Sunday night’s clash with Brighton[2].

The battle between the pair for the United No.1 spot has been a key element of the club’s season, but it was Henderson who started the last six matches after De Gea returned to Spain to attend the birth of his first child.

Now he’s back, the long-time United No.1 had to watch on from the bench on Sunday, and Ferdinand thinks his former teammate won’t be impressed.

“You’ve got two options: you fight for your position or you say, ‘that’s me done, I’m off and I’ll go somewhere else.'” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“If Dean Henderson finishes the season as number one, I don’t see De Gea staying there. No chance, I don’t see it. I think he’ll go out now.

“His wages will be a determining factor but at the end of the day, two number ones doesn’t work.

“De Gea has been a mainstay in the team but Ole is maybe seeing things differently now.

“He’s put Henderson in front of him in the queue. Does De Gea accept that and stay? I don’t think so.

“Henderson has been waiting for this opportunity. Now the pressure is on him. Can he live up to the hype? I’m excited for him and looking forward to see what he can do.

“Solskjaer has seen something in him but he has to perform now. It’s okay being number one at Sheffield United, but it’s a different kettle of fish at Manchester United[3].

“David will be supporting his team-mate but when he gets home tonight, his pride and ego will be hurting, and if it’s not, he shouldn’t be here.

“He’s in the prime of his career and he wants to play every week.”

Ferdinand highlights Lampard “problem” which Tuchel has fixed at Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand claims Thomas Tuchel has repaired the relationship with Chelsea’s senior players which became strained under Frank Lampard’s management.

There was a strong emphasis on integrating youth players throughout Lampard’s one-and-a-half season tenure, with some senior members of the squad regularly left out of the side.

Among these players were Antonio Rudiger and captain Cesar Azpilicueta, but both defenders have played key roles since Tuchel replaced Lampard in January.

The German has proved an excellent appointment so far, leading Chelsea[1] to the top four of the Premier League[2], the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Ferdinand believes Tuchel is reaping the rewards of placing his trust in his experienced players, in contrast to Lampard’s style.

“I think bringing experience back into the team and giving them more responsibility has been a big difference to Frank’s,” Ferdinand told his Vibe with FIVE podcast[3].

“Frank definitely went with the younger players and I think that knocked a few of the older players’ noses out of joint and they may have reacted negatively towards that. That created a problem.

“But these players have come back in – Tuchel has rounded up the experienced players and told them, ‘You’re here, you’re my mainstay and the younger players you’re going to be a part of that as well’.

“But the older players, ‘Don’t worry, you’re with me’, and they’ve all bought back in after not feeling a part of it before.”

Ferdinand also explained how Tuchel’s approach is different to that of his predecessor.

The former England centre-back added: “He wants his team to be hard to beat, hard to play against. Hard, aggressive team.

“They lose the ball, everyone gets back behind the ball, there’s an intensity, an understanding that’s the way we want to play, that’s the way we are.

“[With] Frank, the team was a bit more fluid going forward and they scored more goals but they conceded more goals.”
