Elvis: Girlfriend Linda remembers ‘the greatest love imaginable’

Elvis Presley dated Linda for four and a half years. It was the longest, most significant relationship of his life apart from Priscilla. They split up less than year before his death but Linda was invited by the family to his funeral and has guarded and honoured his memory and legacy ever since. She also married Jenner and had two sons, Brody and Brandon Jenner, as well as forging a successful career as a songwriter and marrying second husband, legendary record producer David Foster.

While those closest to Elvis started to release revelatory tell-all books in the final year of his life and then endlessly ever since, Linda remained notably silent for forty years.

In 2016 she released her only book on the subject, A Little Thing Called Life: On Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner, and Songs in Between.

She said: “Everything that could have possibly been written about Elvis had been written and then some, or made-up stories. So I really thought this was a huge responsibility, to this day. I’ve always attempted to represent him in the light which he deserves.”

Linda said of Elvis: “He was such a remarkable human being and I tried to write the book with kindness and tolerance and understanding.

“And also just a bit of knowledge that you can only garner through life experience. I had to live my life and carve out my own career. I didn’t want to be one of those people that just jumped on the bandwagon and wrote a book and made a profit at his expense and to capitalise on that relationship. I was very guarded about that.

“I wanted to carve out my own position in life, write my own songs, carve out my own career, have my kids and my family and then write about my life and where he fit into it, which is, of course, the greatest love imaginable.”

Linda dated Elvis from July 1972 to December 1976. As well as being his companion and sometimes nursemaid, Linda also became close to The King’s young daughter, who was only four when they started dating.

On the devastating night when Elvis died, nine-year-old Lisa Marie called Linda.

Last month, Linda described that terrible call: “She (Lisa Marie) said, ‘My daddy’s dead, my daddy’s dead.’ I can’t even tell you what I felt. I was stunned and paralysed. I said, ‘What? No, he’s not.’

She said, ‘Yes he is, yes he is. He’s dead.’ The only thing that brought it to reality was when she said, ‘He’ smothered in the carpet.’ And when she said that, I just threw the phone because I thought, ‘Ok, he’s gone. That’s it.’”

John Lennon girlfriend May Pang: ‘The Beatle reached artistic heights when he was with me’

John Lennon married Yoko Ono on March 20, 1969 and enjoyed a few years with her as her husband. When Ono eventually felt a little crowded by Lennon, she urged him to give her some space while taking some time to see their new assistant at Apple Corps Headquarters, May Pang. Pang and Lennon then embarked on an 18-month love affair, a period of his life Lennon later called his “Lost Weekend”.

Pang and Lennon moved out to Los Angeles to be together and set up a new life.

But in 1974 Lennon returned to living in New York with Yoko.

In an interview with The Beatles Bible in 2011, Pang set the record straight on Lennon’s time with her by announcing: “He wasn’t miserable for 18 months. It was a productive time for him.

“He reached artistic heights and healed a lot of his personal relationships, though they were mysteriously fractured again in later years.”

Pang also addressed rumours concerning her relationship with Lennon.

She said: “I just get tired of the same rehashing of lies and myths.

“Even after the story is set somewhat straight, as it was when Larry Kane had interviewed Yoko for his book, certain people continue to spout the party line.

“People, I might add, who weren’t around us or, if they were, were not around as much as they’d lead you to believe.”

Pang said: “The problem was 99 percent of her calls weren’t: ‘Hello, how are you?’

“First they were directives to keep our relationship quiet, which was fine with me. Then John ‘announced it to the world’ by kissing me for Time Magazine and crisis mode kicked in.

“She would call with instructions of what to say, that she had thrown John out. She’d call every day to remind us of what to say. One drama after another.”

Eventually, Lennon met up with Ono in New York in 1974 to experience some hypnotherapy for his smoking habit. He never returned home to Pang.

Lennon eventually rekindled his love with Ono and broke it off with Pang.

A year later, in 1975, Lennon and Ono’s son, Sean Lennon, was born.

Just five years after that, Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980.

Mills continued: “We used to ride up Ventura Boulevard [in LA] and he’d want me to go and get them!

“He saw me in The Wiz all the time, and I went to the set [of The Wiz film] a couple times.”

While talking to The Breakfast Club radio station, Mills explained she and Jackson “were very young” when they were together.

Presley and Jackson eventually got married in 1994.

After their wedding, they appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss their love.

During the expose interview, the couple were asked if they had sex.

An irritated Presley replied: “Do we have sex? Yes, yes, yes!”

The daughter of Elvis Presley was clearly frustrated by the doubt surrounding their marriage.

She said: “Did we marry out of convenience? Why wouldn’t we have a lot in common?”

The couple split just two years later in 1996.

Elvis Presley proposed to his girlfriend just before he met Priscilla Presley

Elvis Presley was drafted into the United States Military in March 1958. The star had to put his music career on hold and move to Friedberg, Germany to go and be of service to his country. The singer and actor had already amassed quite a following at the time after already releasing five huge albums, and had starred in four Hollywood films. Before he left for Europe, Elvis was madly in love with his girlfriend Anita Wood.

Anita was in some ways a lot like Elvis. She was brought up in Memphis after moving there from a rural area of Tennessee and placed a lot of importance on family.

This aspect of Anita was shown by her strong relationship with Elvis’ mother, Gladys Presley. Gladys was quoted as saying she wanted the pair to get married.

Elvis maintained his relationship with Anita from 1957 to 1962. Throughout his time in Germany from 1958 to 1960, the star frequently sent her heartfelt love letters telling her about his time in Europe.

One of the letters the singer penned to his then-girlfriend – whom he affectionately nicknamed Little – included him promising to marry her when he returned from his service.

He wrote in 1958: “Also, I guarantee that when I marry, it will be to Miss Little Presley Wood.”

Elvis went on to add that their marriage may not happen soon, however.

He said: “There is a lot you have to understand though. Only God knows when the time will be right. So you have got to consider this and love me, trust me and keep yourself clean and wholesome because that is the big thing that can determine our lives and happiness together.

“If you believe me and trust me you will wait for me and our future will be filled with happiness. With God’s help it will work itself out and you will understand and be patient. I worked so hard to build up my career and everything, and if you truly love me you would not want anything to happen to it and cause me to be unhappy.”

Elvis then spoke about wanting to have a son with Anita after they were married.

Another letter addressed to Anita from Elvis included lines about their sex life. One passage read: “I can’t explain to you how I crave you and desire your lips and your body under me darling.

“I can feel it now. The things we did and the desire we had for each other’s body!!!”

Of course, just a year later in 1959, Elvis met someone who would grab his attention: Priscilla Presley.

After Elvis started a relationship with Priscilla, he moved back to the USA in 1960 once his military career ended.

Elvis kept the relationship with Priscilla relatively secret until 1962 when Anita found out about his two-timing.

When she found out Anita left the King, and was then begged by the star not to reveal his relationship with the 14-year-old Priscilla.

She later said: “He kept calling and I remember when he got me on the phone: ‘Little, please don’t tell anybody about this. This girl, again, she’s just a child. She’s just a fourteen-year-old child it means absolutely nothing.

“‘She just wants to visit, it means nothing. And if you told anybody, I’d get in a lot of trouble, she’s so young.’ He just begged me: ‘Little, Little, Little.'”

Elvis: Girlfriend Linda recalls tearful Lisa Marie call 'My daddy's dead' – New interview

This year, the annual Elvis Festival in his birthplace, Tupelo Mississippi, attracted not just his cousin Billy Smith, but also his girlfriend Linda Thompson. She dated The King from July 1972 until Christmas 1976. The former beauty queen remained so close to Lisa Marie that the devastated nine-year-old called her from Graceland when they discovered the star’s body on that fateful night of August 16, 1977. Linda spoke candidly about that terrible moment but also shared happier memories of their time together.

Linda has previously opened up about her fears after they split up that nobody would look after Elvis properly. Her worst nightmare came true months later when she received a sudden call.

Talking this week, she said: “I said, ‘hello’ and she said, ‘Linda.’ I said, ‘hey’, she said, ‘It’s Lisa.’ I said, ‘I know who this is, you little goobernickel.’ It was a pet name Elvis and I had for her.

“She said, ‘My Daddy’s dead, my Daddy’s dead.’”

Linda added: “I can’t even tell you what I felt. I was stunned and paralysed. I said, ‘What? No, he’s not.’

“She said, ‘Yes he is, yes he is. He’s dead.’ The only thing that brought it to reality was when she said, ‘He’s smothered in the carpet.’

“And when she said that, I just threw the phone because I thought, ‘Ok, he’s gone. That’s it. Nobody checked on him.’”

Elvis had died, alone in his bathroom for hours, while his latest girlfriend Ginger slept in the next room and the Memphis Mafia were downstairs.

But Linda also has happier memories of their time together when they visited Tupelo and Elvis showed her the tiny house where he grew up.

She told local news station WCBI: “He talked about Tupelo a lot, he told me about his little, shotgun house, and the church where he went with his family. I’m thrilled to be here, to see the house where he was born.”

Part of Linda’s duties this year were to judge the traditional Elvis Tribute Artist (ETA) competition.

She shared a hilarious memory about when the star started to realise people were imitating him.

While The King was alive he heavily influenced popular culture but Linda says he would be absolutely amazed to see the enduring number of impersonators, or Elvis Tribute Artists (ETAs) who still proliferate to this day

She said: “He would be staggered by how incredibly generous everybody has been to his memory.

“He loved the ETAs even when he was alive. He would see people growing sideburns or dressing like him and he would say, ‘Honey, look at that guy over there, I wonder if he thinks he is me?’”

Linda went on to marry two more famous men. First, Olympic decathlete Bruce Jenner, who transitioned to Caitlyn, from 1981 to 1986. Together, they are the parents of reality stars Brody and Brandon Jenner.  After that, she was married to songwriter and producer David Foster from 1991 to 2005.

But in the new interview, Linda referred to Elvis as: “the love of my life. I adored him.

“I think first of all he would be proud of me and how I have tried two conduct my life in a way that has always respected him and his memory. That’s first and foremost to me. I’m a fan as much as anybody else is a fan of Elvis Presley.”

Jamie Redknapp, 47, 'set to become a dad' again with model girlfriend Frida Andersson, 37

“But he really gets on with Frida and she has been very understanding about him juggling fatherhood and his successful TV career.

“He likes that she’s also a parent so fully appreciates the balance, she is also keen on her fitness and loves spending time at home.”

Louise previously expressed her regret at ending her marriage to Jamie so quickly.

She revealed to You! magazine: “I should have paused and thought about other people and had just a bit more time to work out why I felt I couldn’t do it anymore.

“I wish I’d tried. I want to say to anyone thinking of running: Just slow down. Don’t run.

“Because once you run too fast, you can’t make up the ground you’ve lost.”

Elvis: Tearful night girlfriend Anita forced The King to tell the truth 'He was crying'

He had flown Priscilla to America, promising her parents he would not take her out of Memphis, but instead whirling them away on a secret romantic trip to Las Vegas.

And then, one evening at home, Wood overheard a conversation between the star and his father, Vernon.

Wood recalled: “When I was coming down the back stairs into the kitchen, I heard Elvis say, ‘I’m having the hardest time making up my mind between the two.'”

Devastated, she marched into the room and forced Elvis to admit what was going on.

The evening ended with both of them in tears.
