Kate and William honour Diana at poignant ceremony as Harry’s absence sorely felt

Kate and William honour Diana at poignant ceremony as Harry's absence sorely felt

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge held a postponed reception at Kensington Palace to celebrate the artwork of the Princess of Wales that was unveiled to the public last summer. This comes on the same day that the Duchess of Cambridge held everyone’s attention as she made a keynote speech on addiction at a campaign event for the Forward Trust. Prince William, 39, and his wife invited people who made donations towards the statue to their home to thank them for their contributions.

While Harry didn’t make the journey from California for the event he is understood to have been in touch privately with donors who supported the artwork.

The statue depicts the Princess of Wales with a short haircut, dressed in the clothes of the 1990s. The bronze figure, crafted by artist Ian Rank-Broadley, is then circled by three children.

Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris in 1997, five years after her divorce from Prince Charles. At the time, Prince William was 15 years old, and Prince Harry, now 37, was just 12.

However, Prince Harry did not attend the event in honour of his mother, choosing not to fly back to the UK from California.

Although Tuesday afternoon’s Kensington Palace event was held behind doors out of public view, the Duchess of Cambridge had made a splash with her impassioned speech on the effects of addiction as a patron of the Forward Trust.

She spoke with popular television presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly on the turmoil which families go through when it comes to addiction.

She said: “Even hearing some of the stories today, there’s that feeling that you have to carry that secret alone and actually once you start sharing your stories, people have either experienced it themselves or know someone that’s gone through addiction.”

Then appearing at the more private Kensington Palace event, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were able to examine the statue in the presence of those who had supported the project.

Prince Harry has resided in California with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

Their split from the Royal Family came less than two years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018, when the Duchess became a member of the Firm.

The royal couple renounced their duties as senior working royals and relocated to Meghan’s home state in the USA.

Since the highly public rift, the Sussexes revealed all in an explosive television interview with American chat show host, Oprah Winfrey.

During the bombshell interview, the Duchess of Sussex claimed one senior member of the Royal Family expressed concerns about what colour their son Archie’s skin, would be when he was born.

Prince Harry refused to divulge which member of the Royal Family had voiced this, but Prince William refuted the allegations after the interview was aired.

The Duke of Cambridge responded that the monarchy was “very much not a racist family.”

The Sussexes first welcomed Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, two, followed by Lilibet Diana earlier this year.

The Duchess of Sussex also confessed details of her worsening mental health following her wedding to Prince Harry and claimed she felt unsupported by the Firm during her pregnancy with Archie.

Prince William and Prince Harry’s ‘firm’ nanny banned comfort blankets and shoes

Prince William and Prince Harry’s 'firm' nanny banned comfort blankets and shoes

Back in the 80s, royal toddlers William and Harry were not allowed to have a comfort blanket in hand nor were they allowed to wear trainers, a new book has claimed. According to the updated version of “Battle of Brothers” written by historian Robert Lacey, the first nanny that Prince Charles and Lady Diana appointed had many strict rules that she made sure the two boys would follow.

Nanny Barbara Barnes had been recommended by Princess Margaret’s lady-in-waiting and did not wear a nanny hat or uniform.

Today, Prince William employs Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, a trained nanny from the prestigious 125-year-old Norland College in Bath.

She can sometimes be seen at royal engagements in the traditional brown uniform and hat.

As a student, the Spanish nanny was instructed in child-rearing skills as well as cooking, sewing techniques, and even self-defence and first-aid training.

“Barnes was equally firm with the children, not allowing them comfort blankets and refusing them shoes until they had learned to walk properly,” writes Lacey.

The author says Ms Barnes was strict with both Kensington Palace staff and the young princes.

“When they did get their first footwear, Nanny insisted on classic Start-Rites with button straps that were shaped to the boys’ feet,” he adds.

“Trainers were banned.”

Royal author Ingrid Seward was reportedly told by a member of the Kensington Palace staff that Barbara Barnes ran the nursery floor “like the Vatican.”

Despite her strong rules, the nanny was very fond of the two boys and taught them how to walk, talk, read, and choose their clothes and shoes.

To the extent that she became “something of a surrogate mother” to William in particular, says Mr Lacey.

As the Princes would wake up at dawn, Ms Barnes would “bring them into her bed most mornings to romp and play together, before giving them their breakfast and passing them on to their parents when they woke.”

In Robert’s biography, Highgrove housekeeper Wendy Berry was quoted saying that “one weekend she [Barbara Barnes] wasn’t there anymore.”

The historian goes on to suggest that Princess Diana started to “cold-shoulder” the nanny, which would explain her disappearance.

She was later replaced with Alexandra ‘Tiggy’ Pettifer from 1993 to 1999.

Ms Pettifer was with Prince Harry at Balmoral Castle when he found out his mum died in a car crash in 1997.

The Princes are reportedly still in touch with Tiggy with Harry being godfather to her son Fred.

He also introduced her to Meghan during a trip to Cardiff in 2018.

“She’s a very significant person in Harry’s life, almost like a mother-figure, as she looked after Harry when Princess Diana died,” a close source told The Sun.

Royal Family LIVE: Meghan and Harry’s new project sparks fury from Cambridge fans

Royal Family LIVE: Meghan and Harry's new project sparks fury from Cambridge fans

The Duke of York is currently embroiled in a civil court case brought against him by one of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims.

Andrew – who stepped down from Royal duties in 2019 – has vehemently denied all of the accusations made against him but they have seriously marred his reputation.

Royal expert of the Daily Mirror, Russell Myers, has argued the “isolated” Duke is the only person who believes he can return to Royal duties.

Speaking to ITV’s Lorraine, he said: “I think he is the only person in the entire world at the moment who is clinging to the aspect that he could return.”

Mr Myers continued: “Prince William will obviously be taking over one day.

“I think we’ve seen him really come to the fore in his new role of being trusted lieutenant of the Queen and Charles.

“Not only does he think he is a threat but what really gets him, the source said, is his sense of entitlement and the way he has handled himself throughout this saga, he is no fan of his uncle Andrew.

“That says a lot about the relationship between them and he wants to sort this business before he damages the monarchy even further.”

Before concluding, the Royal expert added: “It does seem they’re closing ranks together on him and he’s become quite isolated.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s ‘stunning reversal of fortune’ with Royal Family

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's 'stunning reversal of fortune' with Royal Family

Royal commentator Daniela Elser claimed the Royal Family is “in the midst of a stealthy rebirth”. Mr Elser added that it was a “thrilling new version of what the monarchy can stand for and do” which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “oh-so prematurely cut themselves off from”.

Ms Elser claimed that it was a “stunning about-face from how things looked post-Megxit”.

The commentator said that when Harry and Meghan announced they were quitting royal duties it “looked like they were taking the palace’s best chance of survival with them”.

Writing for news.com.au, Ms Elser added: “Instead, we’ve seen a stunning reversal of fortune.”

The royal commentator praised the royals for “carving out that new, updated role for the crown”.

She highlighted Prince Charles’s BBC interview this week where he discussed climate change.

Ms Elser also highlighted Prince William’s ambitious Earthshot Prize for the environment and Kate’s early childhood survey, which attracted 500,000 responses.

Ms Elser added that the Royal Family’s work is “no longer being defined by saying, but rather by doing”.

Since ending royal duties, the pair have struck lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify.

And in their latest project, they were today announced as “impact partners” and investors at sustainable investing firm Ethic.

It comes as Charles is set to attend a series of events at the Cop26 summit, alongside the Queen, Camilla, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Speaking to the BBC earlier this week, the heir to the throne warned of a disastrous outcome if negotiators fail to ratchet up efforts to combat climate change at the summit.

He said: “The risks now are so great if you don’t make the right move.

“It’ll be catastrophic. It is already beginning to be catastrophic, because nothing in nature can survive the stress that is created by these extremes of weather.”

Prince Harry’s new mega-project with Google off to ‘flying start’ – huge victory for Duke

Prince Harry's new mega-project with Google off to 'flying start' – huge victory for Duke

Announced today, Google unveiled a new initiative with Harry’s non-profit organisation, Travalyst. The two companies will now develop a model for calculating carbon emissions from air travel which can be used across the industry as a gold standard. Commenting on the news, the royal biographer who co-authored ‘Finding Freedom’, revealed the announcement.

He said: “Google’s partnership with Prince Harry’s Travalyst is off to a flying start.

“The company announced today they will now report carbon emissions data for all flights.

“This is alongside the fuel-efficient routing options just added to Google Maps.”

Last month, Harry welcomed Google to his Travalyst sustainable initiative.

The company claimed Google’s partnership, was a significant step forward in the pursuit of helping consumers make more sustainable choices.

Travalyst is also in partnership with Booking.com, Skyscanner, Trip.com Group, Tripadvisor, and Visa.

In a statement on its website, the company says: “Travalyst is a non-profit organisation working to identify – and help bring about – the systemic changes needed in order for sustainable travel to be taken out of the niche, and into the mainstream.

“We believe tourism can, and must, play a key role in achieving a sustainable future for our world; so we’re convening the key players, and catalysing the necessary action, to change the impact of travel, for good.

The 24-hour event took place in Central Park on Saturday and aimed to raise awareness for vaccine inequality.

Harry also described the pandemic as a “human rights crisis” during the event.

Harry said at the event: “We’re battling more than the virus alone, this is a battle of misinformation, bureaucracy, lack of transparency and lack of access and, above all, this is a human rights crisis

“They said many countries are ready to produce vaccines at home yet they aren’t allowed to because ultra-wealthy pharmaceutical companies are not sharing the recipes to make them.

“By the way, many of these vaccines were publicly funded.

Prince Harry’s hopes for Meghan and Kate bond was ‘doomed from start’

Prince Harry's hopes for Meghan and Kate bond was 'doomed from start'

The couple recently made their first public appearance together in a joint speech in New York. Part of Global Citizen’s 24 hour TV marathon, they called for COVID-19 vaccine equality. It is something they have long fought for, having appeared in a Global Citizen event earlier this year making the same point.

Speaking from the Great Lawn in Central Park, Harry said: “Are we prepared to do what is necessary to end this pandemic?” before Meghan added: “There is so much that we can do today, now that can get us closer to ending this pandemic and that’s why we’re all here.”

The appearance is just one in a string of charitable endeavours they have embarked on in a bid to make the world a better place, and something they have vehemently pursued since leaving the Royal Family last year.

Their fallout was nothing short of tumultuous, the breakaway quickly dubbed Megxit.

Royal experts have struggled to pinpoint an exact time or reason as to why the pair fell out with the Firm.

Many have since drawn attention to failures on both sides that may have been early warning signs of an ill-fated royal journey, however.

Daniela Elser, a commentator who regularly writes about the Royal Family, recently published a piece in the New Zealand Herald titled, “Why Prince Harry’s wish for Meghan and Kate to get along was doomed”.

She explored the recently made public letter from Mary Queen of Scots to her cousin Queen Elizabeth I which reportedly rewrites the history of the two women, showing how Mary had sought to reconcile with her English counterpart.

While Meghan and Kate’s situation is world’s apart from that of Elizabeth I and Mary, Ms Esler noted, she said there were certain similarities, and that they were, “two women who could have been allies but who ultimately wound up on opposing sides; two women who shared elevated, titled positions and yet who found themselves in a years-long battle for the people’s hearts and minds”.

JUST INPrince Harry and Prince William’s feud spreads upsetting the children

Ms Elser is not alone in her conclusion.

While many initially expected the pair to become close, others noted that Meghan and Kate were never going to be best friends.

The pair came from completely different worlds: Meghan from a life of showbiz, Kate from an upper-middle class and quintessentially English upbringing.

Ashley Pearson, a royal commentator, previously appeared in Amazon Prime’s documentary, “Harry & Meghan: The Next Step”, and claimed that Meghan and Kate were inherently different people.

She said: “They’re by all means cordial, but I don’t believe they are close friends.

“I think Meghan and Kate probably don’t have all that much in common and they’re both full-formed adult women.

“They’re not teenagers that you take on a trip together and hope they get along.

“These are two fully-formed women with their own styles and opinions.”

She added: “I don’t believe there’s been a big rift between Meghan and Kate at all.

“I think it’s more likely that it’s Harry and William who have their own ideas about things and the wives are going along and supporting their husbands.”

Royal Family LIVE: Queen plots ‘serious gamble’ with Meghan and Harry’s future roles

Royal Family LIVE: Queen plots 'serious gamble' with Meghan and Harry's future roles

The Queen, 95, will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee next year as she marks 70 years on the throne. Throughout the year, Her Majesty and members of the Royal Family will travel around the country undertaking a variety of engagements to mark the occasion.

To mark the occasion, the Queen will award Platinum Jubilee medals to some members of the Royal Family.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed she will award the medals to a number of her relatives including those who no longer or have never undertaken official engagements on her behalf.

The likes of Prince Andrew, 61, who is currently caught up in a civil lawsuit in New York, and his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are expected to receive the award.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear on the list of those set to receive the award, according to the Daily Express’s royal correspondent Richard Palmer.

Despite stepping away from the monarchy in early 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will both still receive the honour alongside other acting members of the Firm.

However, royal commentator and journalist Daniela Elser has argued the Queen may be making a serious gamble by not “listening to her people” as Meghan and Harry’s popularity plummets in the UK. She claimed the Queen’s decision to “not rock the boat” could backfire.

Ms Elser wrote in news.com.au: “For the Queen, the decision to not rock the boat and to hew to what she did in 2012, rather than listening to her people, therefore, pursuing a different approach, is a serious gamble.”In recent YouGov polls, the Duke of Sussex saw his popularity drop nearly ten percent in September.

The September YouGov poll showed positive opinions of the royals in Britain dropped from 43 percent to 34 percent.

His wife, Meghan Markle, also saw a drop in popularity this side of the pond as her approval rating fell from 29 percent to 26 percent.

Royal Family LIVE: Prince Harry’s wish for Meghan Markle and Kate was ‘doomed’ from start

Royal Family LIVE: Prince Harry's wish for Meghan Markle and Kate was 'doomed' from start

Prince William have launched a rallying call as he calls for environmental action as the planet is in “crisis”.

Prince William has joined a documentary entitled “The Earthshot Prize: Repairing Our Planet” which is set to release on Sunday.

The documentary explores ideas from fifteen creators as to what the best way is to protect the planet.

Prince William said: “In reaching for the moon we found the earth. For the first time we could see that the world we live on is finite and precious.

“Ultimately, it woke us to a distressing truth we are still trying to come to terms with – the modern world we have built is at odds with the planet we live on.

“It’s come to this, our planet is now in crisis, its delicately balanced systems are becoming more and more unstable with every passing year. So for the sake of future generations, let’s act now.

“Let’s take inspiration from the Moonshot, and set ourselves a global challenge for this decade, a common goal to unite behind, to mend our broken relationship with our planet and build a better future for all.”
