AZ vaccine death: Husband describes wife’s symptoms days before she died of blood clots

“Vaccines have been given to people when [it’s known] there are risks. We don’t know who those adverse reactions are going to appear in – it’s a lottery,” said widowed Gareth Eve. His late wife, Lisa Shaw – who was only 44 years old – experienced a blood clot following her first shot of the AstraZeneca jab. “Lisa had the jab on Thursday,” the father-of-one recalled. “The following Friday, she experienced headaches.”

Feeling choked up, Gareth said: “That’s the last time she saw her sister.”

Rushed off to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, the hospital team later discovered a bleed on the brain.

“She was in a lot of pain,” Gareth remembered. “She said, ‘I’m tired.’ I gave her a kiss, and then I never spoke to her again.”

Now Gareth is campaigning for people to have the choice of which vaccine they get.

“Over 81 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 have now been administered in the UK, saving thousands of lives.

“No effective medicine or vaccine is without risk, and our advice remains that the benefits of AstraZeneca vaccination outweigh the risks in the majority of people.”

Becoming teary-eyed, Gareth wished for Lisa to be remembered as “so kind”.

“She’s my best friend, she’s a fantastic mummy, and daughter, and sister.

“I don’t want what’s happened to her to be brushed under the carpet, so this doesn’t happen to other people.”

BBC’s Medical Editor, Fergus Walsh, said: “It was heartbreaking listening to that.”

Walsh agrees that there needs to be a focus on side effects, risks and benefits of vaccines.

There is a known – very rare – side effect of the AstraZeneca jab called vaccine-induced thrombosis and thrombocytopenia (VITT).

This is a condition where blood clots form in combination with low platelet levels, which “doesn’t happen naturally”.

Thus, the MHRA says that it is “a strong likelihood” that the vaccine is causing VITT.

There have been “just under 400 cases of that”, said Walsh, “most of them after the first dose – and 71 deaths”.

Echoing the MHRA, Walsh stated that all medicines and vaccines have risks associated with them alongside benefits.

Kate Middleton: 5 pictures of future Queen that would make husband Prince William proud

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 39, was characterised as shy when she first married Prince William, 39, in 2011. But in the decade since their spectacular royal wedding, the future Queen Consort has thrived in the limelight in a way that will be hugely reassuring to her husband, a body language expert has claimed. Touching on Kate’s transformation, body language expert and author Judi James told Express.co.uk the Duchess has shone during the pandemic.

Judi said: “For the past couple of years and especially since lockdowns started, we have been able to meet Kate properly as an independent royal; future Queen and of course wife and mother.”

Judi added: “If William was worried about the extra exposure and the increased interest in his wife he clearly didn’t need to.

“Her appearances as a campaigner in her own right; as a royal host by herself, and even as a very influential royal within the Firm have all revealed her traits of confidence and inner resolve.”

Judi analysed five powerful photos of Kate taken since the start of the year and shared her insights with Express.co.uk.

Judi added: “Kate might have previously been more self-effacing and even slightly shy when the cameras are around but here, arriving by herself, she greets the camera with a very direct glance and the flash even adds a gleam to her eye expression.

“The real clincher in terms of Kate’s impact though is that her mouth is hidden behind the mask.

“Kate had always sported a signature smile and without it being visible she could have lost some of her non-verbal impact.

“In fact the opposite is true. By focusing the attention on her eyes rather than her mouth we suddenly saw a new version of Kate that was even stronger and more confident-looking than usual.”

Edinburgh – May

The Duchess donned a pink dress in Edinburgh ahead of meeting Mila, a young girl with cancer, who had always dreamed of meeting a real-life princess.

Responding to the picture of Kate at Holyroodhouse, Judi said: “Kate showed her capacity to go full fairy-tale princess when necessary, arriving here to meet young cancer patient Mila in Edinburgh and fully aware that Mila wanted to see her looking magical.

“Kate will often down-play her presence and status to create rapport when she’s meeting the public, but this was a moment to arrive with a swish of confidence and she played it to the max, making a great entrance with an upright posture and her shoulders pressed down and slightly splayed, her arms hanging down at her sides but held slightly away from her torso and her eyes crinkled in a very confident but friendly eye-smile of greeting.

“She wanted to create a magical memory for Mila and her family and she more than achieved that.”

Early Childhood Centre launch – June

Kate stepped out solo at Kensington Palace to launch the new Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood in June.

Judi said: “This pose shows Kate in active campaigning mode as she turned up alone to launch an early childhood centre.

“This year we have seen Kate launching her own initiatives and making speeches and TV presentations with almost professional skills and confidence.

“Her style is inspirational rather than challenging or hectoring but it is just as powerful for that.”

Kate and First Lady Jill Biden – June

The Duchess spent time with USA First Lady Jill Biden during her and President Joe Biden’s visit to the UK last month.

Judi said: “Kate is in the role of royal host here and again her elevated levels of confidence show.

“When she first met Michelle Obama we could see the First Lady putting Kate at her ease but with several years under her belt, Kate looks happy to put Jill Biden at her ease here, chatting in a very friendly way and looking relaxed as she uses some active listening signals.”

Wimbledon finals – July

Kate shone in her role as patron of Wimbledon tennis tournament at the event’s finals this weekend.

Judi said: “Kate has always been a fan of the Wimbledon championships but we’ve normally just had glimpses of her sitting in the royal box.

“Here though she walks down to meet the ball boys and girls and again her confidence signals look raised to a new level.

“Rubbing her hands in anticipation she appears to be sharing a joke with them here.

“Instead of the usual ‘perfect smile’ her mouth is held open in a much more fun expression.

“This ability to joke with groups is one that both her husband and his father have always shared and it is a reflection of Kate’s increased social confidence that she is able to create this level of rapport.”

Pearland librarian's legacy lives on as husband pleads guilty to her murder

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — More than two years after a former Houston Police Sergeant shot and killed his wife, he’s plead guilty to murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

It’s justice for a family still coping with unimaginable loss.

Belinda Hernandez was a school librarian, an educator, and a life-long learner.

In March 2019, her husband, Hilario Hernandez, who was an HPD sergeant for more than 30 years at the time, shot and killed her. He took off and was later arrested not far from the Texas-Mexico border, leaving the couple’s adult children to grieve.

Christina Foos is their daughter. On Friday, she faced her father, who she now calls Larry, in court.

As her father prepares to begin his sentence, Foos is following in her mother’s footsteps as an educator for Pearland ISD.

“It’s definitely been a long two years,” she said. “A devastating situation for my brother and myself. Essentially, that day, we lost both our parents. Mainly, what I made the focus about was her and her legacy. I made that known in the speech that it is no longer about him and it’s completely about her.”

Foos is grateful this chapter is closed. Her mother’s memory is a constant reminder of how to live a good life.

“We miss her every day. She is just simply irreplaceable,” Foos said.

Belinda’s legacy lives on at two Pearland ISD campuses, one at which she was the librarian and another at which she taught reading.

There are free libraries filled with donated books, all dedicated in her memory.

Sonia Serrano first hired Belinda more than 20 years ago and mentored her as the mother of two went back to school to become a teacher. She then earned her master’s degree so she could become a librarian and share her love of reading.

“She had a passion for education,” Serrano said. “She was a life-long learner. She loved books. She loved providing instructions to students no matter what her role was. She took every opportunity available to teach kids life lessons. “

Michelle Kiefer, the principal at Shadycrest Elementary, said she misses Belinda’s spirit, but thinks of her when she walks into the library or when she sees the mural she painted or when she passes the little library built in her honor.

“We just couldn’t be more proud of Belinda Hernandez and the legacy she has created, not only for her kids and her family, but for Pearland ISD and the whole Pearland community,” said Kiefer.

In addition, those libraries mean everything to her children.

“We’re so honored and feel very blessed that she continues to live on in our community,” said Foos.

Georgetown husband facing murder charge after investigation into wife's disappearance

GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) — A Georgetown man is facing a murder charge after an investigation into his wife’s disappearance this past February.

At last check, Travis Hall is being held in jail on a $ 1 million bond.

His wife, Julie Hall, reportedly disappeared Feb. 19. She was last seen at her apartment and didn’t report for work the following Monday. She was a Hutto Independent School District special education aide.

KXAN has reached out to the District Attorney’s Office to see if Hall’s murder charge is connected to Julie’s disappearance.

According to a previous arrest affidavit, Hall was caught lying about where she and he were and what he did in the days leading up to and after she was reportedly missing.

Hall lied about Julie’s whereabouts to his children and police, the affidavit says, saying she went to visit her sister the day she disappeared. Her sister told investigators there were no such plans and Julie didn’t visit her. He also told police he had gone to Houston on Feb. 20 for a plumbing job, but later admitted to police he had been unfaithful and used a debit card in Julie’s name while in Houston after having dinner with the woman he admitted to having an affair with, the affidavit says.

Hall said he deleted text messages from his phone that detailed the affair and used Julie’s phone to send text messages and lie about her status to other family members, according to the affidavit.

The Texas Rangers found a confession letter in the couple’s apartment days after Julie’s disappearance, which read, “I’m sorry! I killed your mother in her sleep.” The letter was signed, “Dad.”

That letter, which led to a search warrant, also led to the discovery of blood spatters in the bedroom and evidence of a cleaning agent used on the floor.

Hall’s previous charges included tampering with evidence.
