Emma Raducanu labelled ‘the real deal’ and compared to her tennis idol amid Wimbledon run

Former world No 1 Mats Wilander has tipped Emma Raducanu to enjoy a long and successful career at the highest levels of the game as the teenager prepares to face Ajla Tomljanovic in the fourth round at Wimbledon. Raducanu has been one of the success stories of this year’s tournament, producing some incredible tennis to maintain her Grand Slam dream and pleasing many of the fans in attendance at the All England Club in the process.

The 18-year-old stunned last year’s French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the competition before sealing a last-16 berth on Saturday with another nerveless display against Sorana Cirstea.

Raducanu slipped to a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but battled back to claim the spoils and extend her debut Grand Slam campaign by another couple of days at the very least.

She only sat her A-levels earlier this year and made her first WTA appearance last month, but has quickly established herself as a home favourite at Wimbledon and will be hoping to keep up her winning form for as long as possible.

Speaking after Raducanu’s latest victory, Wilander waxed lyrical over the Brit’s impressive mental outlook and age-defying composure despite her tender years.

The 56-year-old told Eurosport that he believes Raducanu can emerge as a top-level player in years to come, admitting that she bears many similarities with her idol and two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na.

“Amazing scenes,” said Wilander. “She is the real deal, and I am talking about the mindset. An incredible mindset and an incredible mover.

“She played incredibly. She has a great mindset, and just the way she handled it.

“She had so many break points in that second set and somehow, like a mature tennis pro who has been on the tour for years, she handled that setback.

“She plays like her idol, Li Na. The forehand is almost an identical copy. She really is a fantastic tennis player and there is nowhere she is going to go but up. She is going to improve and improve.

DON’T MISS

“The fact that she turned that match around, and Cirstea came back, that is such a confidence boost and such a telling point that she is here to stay.

“She moves incredibly well and she has real strength. She has literally everything. She can be a superstar.”

Raducanu will face Tomljanovic of Australia in the next round at Wimbledon after the latter overcame former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko on Saturday.

The Canadian-born British player will be hoping to reach the quarter-finals with another victory over her next opponent, who has a WTA singles ranking of 117.

Speaking after her win over Cirstea on Court One, Raducanu told reporters: “I am so speechless right now.

“I didn’t know what my reaction would be, and then that just happened. I’m so, so grateful for all the support I had today.

“This is by far the biggest court I’ve played on. I think I coped quite well in the beginning, I just tried to hold my nerve.

“When I was packing to come into the bubble, my parents said: ‘Aren’t you packing too much match kit?’. I think I’m going to have to do some laundry tonight!”

‘Idol’ Star Avalon Young, 26, To Undergo Brain Cancer Surgery After Peach-Sized Tumor Removed

Author: Samantha Wilson

Former ‘American Idol’ star Avalon Young revealed that she is undergoing a second surgery for brain cancer and is asking for help to pay for the procedure.

American Idol alum Avalon Young is pleading for help as she battles brain cancer. The 26-year-old singer revealed in a message on GoFundMe that she already underwent a 16-hour surgery in February to remove the majority of a “peach-sized tumor” from her front left temporal lobe, but was told by doctors that a second surgery is necessary to get the rest of it. The surgery will be “followed by weeks of radiation and chemotherapy,” and she needs help paying for the pricey procedures.

“Avalon has minimal insurance, is an independent artist, and self-supporting singer/ songwriter,” the GoFundMe, set up by Avalon and her family, reads. “We hope to help her with some of the financial burden as a result of these medical expenses. No amount is too little.” As of April 27, Avalon has raised $ 58,391 of her $ 100,000 goal before the May 27 surgery.

They revealed on the page that, despite her significant health struggles, the American Idol season 15 finalist has been hard at work in the studio and will release a new single, “She Don’t,” on April 30. She first knew something was wrong in November 2020 when she began having “simple partial seizures,” she told fans in a February Instagram post. After a struggle to get a diagnosis, doctors revealed that she had a “mass legion tumor” on the left frontal lobe of her brain.

Avalon updated her Instagram followers on April 3 with a photo of herself recovering from her surgery, revealing that she had been diagnosed with brain cancer. “Got some of the worst news ever after thinking i was fully recovering after this tumor surgery,” she wrote. “I’ve got cancer in my brain and i gotta boss up and take care of it. A second surgery, and then chemotherapy and radiation.”

“I felt like it was only fair to let you guys know because you’ve supported me up until this point,” Avalon continued. “Unreal to receive this news at the age of 26. Everything is gonna be okay, the journey is gonna be wild, but i’m ready for it. Love you guys a ton. F*ck cancer.” In her post-surgery photo, Avalon is smiling and throwing up a middle finger.

Cecil Ray Baker: 5 Things To Know About ‘American Idol’ Contestant Arrested For Burglary At Ex’s Home

Just one week after Cecil Ray Baker was eliminated from ‘American Idol,’ he’s been charged with burglary for allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home.

Good things didn’t happen for Cecil Ray Baker following his elimination from season 19 of American Idol. Just one week after being sent home, he allegedly tried to break into his ex-girlfriend Maria Lopez‘s house in Texas and allegedly hit her on her left cheek. Cecil, 20, has been charged with burglary of habitation — a second degree felony — and was released the same day on  $ 15,000 bond. Rockdale, TX police officers responded to Maria’s home after a 911 call on Saturday, Apr. 17. She said her ex Cecil tried to break in through the back entrance of her home after she refused to let him in the front door. We have five things to know about Cecil.

Cecil claims to be a loving dad

He devoted a Hollywood Week performance during Idol in March to his two-month-old daughter Emilia Jade. “My daughter, she’s my lifeline. I plan to give her the life I never had. I wanna prove to my daughter that just because you grow up in a small town doesn’t mean you can’t have the biggest dreams. Anything’s achievable,” he said before taking the stage.

Maria alleges Cecil is a serial cheater who claimed their baby wasn’t his

In a TikTok video to her 37.5K followers on Apr 16, Maria wrote, You really had everyone fooled,” and included a clip of him talking to a local TV station where Cecil claimed all he thought about during the competition was his family and daughter. “Then the day came when you cheated on me and chose the other girls over us,” she continued, showing text screen grabs alleging cheating then wrote, “I did everything to keep us together even when you tore me apart. I deserve better after everything you’ve put me through and yet what you continue to put me through,” while showing a photo red scratches on her forehead. In the caption, Maria wrote, “People aren’t who they always seem to be on TV. I’m tired of always being silenced. You even denied my daughter being yours #cheater #americanidol #fyp.”

Cecil still plans on chasing his dream of becoming a country singer

After he was eliminated from Idol, he shared and Instagram selfie with the caption “My American Idol journey may have came to an end.. But I couldn’t be more grateful for the path I’m on now thanks to everyone that believed in me! My Idol experience was life changing and I’ll never forget the memories and friends made.. Thank you all, I can’t wait to share my creativity with the world #singer #country #music #countrysinger #idol.”

Cecil had been sharing Instagram videos of him singing long before going on ‘Idol’

His Instagram page is filled with videos of him playing the acoustic guitar and singing along to songs by country artists like Morgan Wallen, Cody Johnson and Koe Wetzel.

The ‘American Idol’ judges had high praise for Cecil

He was deemed the “country Justin Bieber” by judge Katy Perry, and actual country superstar Luke Bryan said during Cecil Ray’s audition that he was the “best country singer” of the season. While he made it to the top 24, that week he had a rough performance and got cut by viewers before the final 16.

American Idol: The Comeback performances and how to vote

American Idol

NEW YORK — Last season’s ‘American idol’ contestants missed out on a lot because of the COVID-19 pandemic including performing on the big stage.

While they may have done well with their remote productions, there’s nothing like performing on stage.

So, the ‘Idol’ producers invited 10 finalists to perform on Monday night for the last spot in the Top 10.

RELATED: See the performances that produced the Idol’s top 9

Viewers will decide who from the Comeback round gets that last spot by voting in one of 3 ways:
1. Go to americanidol.com/vote
2. Use the American Idol app
3. Text the contestants number (noted next to their names below) to 21523

Fans can cast their votes until Monday, April 26 at 6:00 a.m. ET | 3:00 a.m. PT.

And now here are the performances…

Cyniah Elise (C1)
Cyniah Elise has already put out her first single, but she still wants a shot at becoming the next ‘American Idol.’ She performed “Edge of Midnight (Midnight Sky Remix)” by Miley Cyrus.

Nick Merico (C2)
Nick Merico is hoping the third time is a charm. The Miami native had to drop out due to family issues in Season 17 and did not make it past the top 20 last season. Nick took a risk by performing an original song, “City Lights.”

While Luke Bryan liked the idea of rolling the dice, he was not impressed with Nick’s vocal performance, which drew boos from the crowd.

Aliana Jester (C3)
Another top 20 contestant from last season, Aliana Jester returned with an impressive performance of “I’ll Never Love Again” by Lady Gaga that had the judges standing at the end.

“That was a world-class, wonderful performance,” Lionel Richie said.

Franklin Boone (C4)
North Carolina music teacher Franklin Boone fell one round short of the Top 10 last season. He’s 29 and he admits this is his last shot. He performed “Meant to Live” by Switchfoot for the Comeback round. Franklin switched it up, hit a high note at the end and with the judges. Now it’s up to the viewers to decide!

Faith Becnel (C5)
She may have been voted off last season, but Faith Becnel has not stopped chasing her dream. She released her debut single last May and a Christmas song in December. Faith performed “Cry Baby” by Janis Joplin for her Comeback.

Halfway through the competition, fans got a treat as the legendary Harry Connick Jr., a former ‘Idol’ mentor and judge, performed a medley of songs from his new album, “Alone With My Faith”

Connick said he played some 30 instruments for the album.

Arthur Gunn (C6)
Last season’s runner-up Arthur Gunn took to the Idol stage in search of a second chance with a performance of “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls.

The Kathmandu native had the judges on their feet!

“You are really authentic,” Katy Perry said. “You are the real deal.”

DeWayne Crocker Jr. (C7)
Florida native DeWayne Crocker Jr. wanted to showcase to his gospel roots for his Comeback performance. He started behind the piano and then got up for a strong finish performing “Voice of God.”

“You have clearly stepped into your light,” Lionel Richie said.

Makayla Phillips (C8)
She was the judges’ save last season and now she has another chance to pursue her Idol dream. Whether or not she makes it, Makayla Phillips wanted to use her Comeback opportunity to sing for her sister who lost her father last year. She performed “Anyone” by Demi Lovato with power and emotion.

“Really, really wonderful performance,” Luke Bryan said. “Way to comeback and really show up.”

“We felt every bit of that performance,” Lionel Richie said.

After that emotional performance, an Idol alum took the stage. Lauren Daigle, who made it to the Hollywood round as an ‘Idol’ contestant in 2012, performed the uplifting “Look Up Child.”

Olivia Ximines (C9)
One of the youngest contestants from last season, Olivia Ximines said she felt out of place performing from home. The Hawaii native took an upbeat approach for her Comeback, singing (and dancing) “Say Yes” by Michelle Williams. She had the judges standing by the end.

“You weren’t meant to stay in the living room. You belong on the stage,” Katy Perry said.

Louis Knight (C10)
The last contestant of the night has put out a half dozen singles since being voted off last season’s show. Philadelphia’s Louis Knight made his Comeback with one of those original songs, “Maybe That.”

“Tremendous growth,” Luke Bryan said. “I was totally caught up in your moment.”

“You’ve turned into a great songwriter,” Lionel Richie said.

‘Khabib is a real man’: Tennis ‘black panther’ Kudermetova hails ex-UFC champ as her idol – then lifts first career title with win

Russian tennis star Veronika Kudermetova has won the first singles title of her career – and her straight-sets victory over Montenegrin Danka Kovinic would have made her idol, UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov, a proud compatriot.

The 23-year-old claimed she had no expectations going into the final in South Carolina, where she won the world’s oldest professional all-women’s tournament in America with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to earn the top prize of around $ 565,000.

Ranked at 38 going in to the tournament, Kudermetova beat former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who was a previous winner at Charleston, in the quarterfinals, and started 53 places ahead of Kovinic.

The big-serving prospect never seemed unduly troubled as she went one better than her previous final of the year, when she beat world number five Elina Svitolina in Abu Dhabi on a run that was only ended by Belarusian world number seven Aryna Sabalenka.

Kudermetova has said that her tennis inspiration is Russian tennis icon Maria Sharapova, but she named Nurmagomedov as her hero in the build-up to the final.

“Khabib is a tough guy, a real man,” she said, speaking to the WTA on its Tennis Channel.

“He never misses an opportunity. I think he’s a good person. When he fights, I strongly support him, I like him.

“He is an amazing person, I hope I can be as mentally strong as he is. He has a nickname – an eagle. I am often called a black panther.”

After the greatest day of her time in the game so far, Kudermetova now knows how Nurmagomedov felt on some of his greatest nights in his 29-fight unbeaten career.

Kelly said in an interview: “When Simon Cowell put me forward to write for One Direction I said: ‘Let me hear them first.’”

The singer, who was 29-years-old at the time, agreed and wrote the song Tell Me A Lie for the band.

1D put the single on their debut album, Up All Night, which was released on November 18, 2011.

Katy Perry Slays In Leather Dress For Sexy ‘American Idol’ Behind-The-Scenes Pics

Katy Perry put her post-baby body on display in behind-the-scenes pics from the set of the April 5 episode of ‘American Idol.’

Who else could make a bathroom look this good!? Katy Perry[1] turned the bathroom stall into her very own photo shoot set in new behind-the-scenes pics from the set of American Idol[2]. She took to Instagram to show a full length look at her ensemble from the show’s April 5 episode, and posed in the set’s bathroom in the photos. Katy looked amazing in her plunging leather dress, which featured a belt across her midsection.

The April 5 episode of Idol was pre-taped, so it’s unclear exactly when these photos were taken. However, season 19 of the show didn’t start taping until after Katy gave birth in Aug. 2020, so the pics are definitely of her post-baby. Katy wasted no time getting back to work after she had her little girl[3]Daisy Dove, and was first photographed on the Idol set just six weeks[4] after she welcomed her daughter.

This is Katy’s fourth season as a judge on Idol alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. The April 5 show featured contestants from the top 24 performing duets with celebrity guests, including Tori Kelly, Jason Aldean and more. Viewers will have a chance to vote their favorites into the top 16.

Later this month, American Idol will turn from pre-taped episodes to live shows, so Katy will be back on-set with her fellow judges. Until then, though, she’ll be embracing time with her fiance, Orlando Bloom, and their baby. In March, the trio took a family trip to Hawaii, and looked relaxed as they hit the beach, went for walks and more. On Easter Sunday, the couple also took Daisy to the beach in Santa Barbara for another fun outing.[5][6][7]

Katy and Orlando have been engaged since Valentine’s Day 2019, but had to push back their wedding amidst the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Their new plans to tie the knot have not been revealed. This will be the second marriage for both stars, as Katy was previously married to Russell Brand and Orlando was with Miranda Kerr, who he shares a son with.
