Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford set for lengthy injury layoff following Euro 2020 heartbreak

Man Utd's Marcus Rashford set for lengthy injury layoff following Euro 2020 heartbreak

Marcus Rashford could miss the first two months of the season with Manchester United, with the striker reportedly set to undergo shoulder surgery. Rashford’s Euro 2020 came to a heartbreaking end when he missed his penalty in England’s shoot-out defeat against Italy at Wembley on Sunday – and that could be his last action for some time.

Rashford has been managing an injury in his left shoulder since November and, after a long season came to a close, he underwent scans on the problem area on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old has been using pain-killing injections to get through matches over the past eight months.

The surgery is not absolutely necessary because the torn muscle is not expected to get worse, but The Telegraph reports that he still wants to undergo surgery.

Rashford wants to have surgery as soon as possible, because he doesn’t want to keep taking pain-killing injections in the long-term.

The report says that Rashford won’t be able to have surgery until the end of July, with recovery time estimated at 12 weeks from that date.

JUST IN: Jadon Sancho’s Man Utd ‘medical complete’ ahead of five-year deal

It is much-needed time off for the young forward, who played 57 games for United last season – more than any player other than Bruno Fernandes.

Managing his shoulder issue has become more and more difficult for Rashford, who has often played through pain, swelling and restricted movement.

The surgery will undoubtedly be a blow for United considering Rashford scored 21 goals and registered 15 assists for the club last season.

However, his absence could be mitigated by the arrival of Jadon Sancho, who is set to officially join United in a £73million move from Borussia Dortmund.

The 21-year-old winger completed his United medical on Tuesday and has agreed a five-year contract with the option of a further year.

Louise Minchin: BBC star shares injury update after bike accident ‘So glad I am not alone’

Elsewhere, Louise discussed potentially signing up to Strictly Come Dancing following her announcement that she will be leaving BBC Breakfast after 20 years later this year.

During the latest episode of Her Spirit podcast, Louise’s BBC co-star Carol Kirkwood discussed her time on Strictly and went on to urge the former to sign up.

The host has always said she’s been on a “lifetime ban” to do the show, until recently.

The mum-of-two revealed: “What I’m more worried about is that the other day on [BBC] Breakfast, Dan [Walker] mentioned it and I said the line I’ve said for many years Carol, that, ‘I’m on a lifetime ban from my family’.

“And my husband texts me and he goes, ‘Ban lifted’.”

Subjectivist suffers season-ending injury

Subjectivist suffers season-ending injury

Gold Cup hero Subjectivist is out for the season after suffering a leg injury.

The Mark Johnson-trained four-year-old gave a top-drawer performance to win in brilliant fashion at Royal Ascot, by five lengths from Princess Zoe – with three-time victor Stradivarius only fourth.

He was expected to renew rivalry with the latter in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup later this month.

It is possible Subjectivist could be ready in time to defend his crown at Royal Ascot next summer but, as a potential stallion, time could be called on his racing career.

Johnston said: “He’s got an injury and it’s certainly season-ending.

“There was no secret that the horse had filling in his left foreleg in Dubai straight after the race (Dubai Gold Cup) and we got a hell of a fright from that. Visually, that was a career-ending injury.

“Within 24 hours he’d got a reasonably clean bill of health and within a month he’d got a complete clean bill of health, which was very unusual for that type of situation. Everything went perfectly well and there were no issues going into the Ascot Gold Cup or afterwards.

Latest Racing Stories

“But on Monday he had filling in the opposite leg. Because the left foreleg had been so atypical and he’d come back from that, we hoped it would be the same with the other leg, but it didn’t.

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking. The only positive we can take from it is that at least he did get the opportunity to show us what he could do.

“Those of us that were there in Dubai thought that was a phenomenal performance and at least it was confirmed in what I like to think was one of the best Ascot Gold Cups in recent days.

“I don’t know (if he’ll run again).”

Ben Shephard health: Good Morning Britain host in hospital following injury – symptoms

Ben Shephard health: Good Morning Britain host in hospital following injury - symptoms

Sharing a video of himself from the hospital bed, Ben Shephard told fellow hosts of Good Morning Britain that following surgery, “the painkillers appear to be doing the job”. Aware that he has a “long, slow” recovery period ahead of him, Ben must prepare for the possibility that his knee may never be the same again. The NHS warned: “Your knee may not be exactly like it was before the injury, and you may still have some pain and swelling.”

People who experience an ACL injury have a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis in the knee.

Reduce your risk of an ACL injury

Strengthen your core, including hips, pelvis and lower abdomen, and avoid moving the knee inward during a squat.

Also perform exercises that strengthen the leg muscles, particularly the hamstrings.

It will also be helpful to emphasise “proper technique” during sports training.

As well as tearing his ACL, Ben also tore his meniscus – a piece of cartilage in the knee that cushions and stabilises the joint.

This can be a “painful and debilitating” injury, noted WebMD, that is common in contact sports, such as football.

A meniscus injury typically occurs when a person suddenly changes direction while running – and it’s common to coincide with an ACL injury.

Symptom of a meniscus tear include:

  • Pain in the knee
  • Swelling
  • A popping sensation during the injury
  • Difficulty bending and straightening the leg
  • A tendency for your knee to get “stuck” or lock up.

To speed up the recovery process, it’ll be helpful to rest, ice, and elevate the knee.

Anti-inflammatory painkillers are recommended, which will help with the pain and swelling.

It’s important to avoid “impact activities” during the recovery process, such as running and jumping.

However, if the tear is large, unstable, or causing locking symptom, surgery might be required.

Laurie Hernandez gives update on injury that cost her US Olympic Trials

Laurie Hernandez gives update on injury that cost her US Olympic Trials

Hernandez tweeted Tuesday that she just realized she hadn’t fully explained what happened to her knee that ultimately cost her a shot at the Olympics.

Olympic gold medal gymnast Laurie Hernandez gave an update Tuesday on the injury she suffered at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships that ultimately cost her a spot at the Olympic trials.

Hernandez appeared to hyperextend her right knee during warmups before the U.S. Championships. She pushed through the beam routine on the first night, but withdrew from the second night altogether.

She gave more details Tuesday.

“this is super random but like… i got a bone bruise, fluid, a cyst and torn meniscus from that dismount landing in championships & just realized i never gave y’all a knee update,” Hernandez tweeted. “and i still chose to do beam after the fall, I’m proud (it was a bad routine but I’m just glad i tried).”

Hernandez was left off the roster for the Olympic trials two weeks ago. She did not petition to be added and ended up doing commentary for the NBC broadcast.

After her injury, Hernandez posted a thread on Twitter showing a bunch of the skills she was working on for trials.

Hernandez won silver on the balance beam and gold in the team event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The 2020 U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team will include Hernandez’s 2016 teammate Simone Biles along with first-time Olympians Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Grace McCallum, MyKayla Skinner and Jade Carey. Skinner and Carey will only compete in individual events while the other four will also be in the team competition. Carey earned her own spot through the World Cup circuit, separate from the Olympic trials.
