PM hits back after U-turn: Boris insists he only ‘briefly’ considered not isolating

Boris Johnson has insisted he only “briefly” considered not self-isolating after he was pinged by NHS Test and Trace. The Prime Minister sparked controversy this morning after it was reported he and Rishi Sunak were going to avoid self-isolation through a daily contact testing pilot. Following an intense backlash and mounting pressure, both the Prime Minister and Chancellor appeared to make a quick U-turn and instead confirmed plans to self-isolate.

In a video posted on Twitter late this afternoon, Mr Johnson addressed criticism of his previous plan.

Speaking from Chequers, where he is now self-isolating, the Prime Minister said: “We did look briefly into the idea of us taking part in the pilot scheme which allows people to test daily.

“But I think it’s far more important that everybody sticks to the same rules.

“That’s why I’m going to be self-isolating until 26 July.”

He urged England to “stick with the programme” ahead of Freedom Day tomorrow

Mr Johnson told viewers: “I really do urge everybody to stick with the programme and take the appropriate course of action when you’re asked to do so by NHS test and trace.”

The video was posted alongside a caption that read: “Like so many people I’ve been pinged by NHS Test and Trace as I have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, and I will be self-isolating until Monday 26th July.”

Mr Johnson was originally pinged after contact with Sajid Javid, who has tested positive for COVID-19.

He continued: “The Prime Minister is causing utter chaos with his reckless decision-making and that means infection rates are going through the roof, hundreds of thousands of people are having to self-isolate and they are doing the right thing.

“What happens when the rules apply to the prime minister? He tries to wriggle out of them and pretend he’s on some pilot scheme that exempts him.

“I’m afraid that, yet again, we see it is one rule for them and another for everybody else.”

Mr Johnson is going ahead with the full re-opening of the economy tomorrow on July 19 despite a new surge in Covid cases.

New infections are running at their highest level since January due to the rise in the Delta variant.

UFOs 'are real!' insists expert ahead of US intelligence report into unexplained sightings

US intelligence agencies are due to issue the results of a report following an official investigation into unidentified flying objects. The probe was launched after long discounted sightings by US Navy personnel were publically acknowledged by the US military as being “credible”. Speaking ahead of the US intelligence report publication, researcher Tom Rogan has claimed  that UFOs are very much “real.”
Mr Rogan told LBC’s Iain Dale: “I don’t really think it is a question of whether people believe in UFOs anymore.

“They are real, the issue is what quantity of them are real.

“That 99.9 percent probably are weather phenomena, a plane that gets misidentified or someone who is confused.

“But this small percentage is very real.”

He continued: “I would add to the point of this I am relatively early in my journalistic career and to get this wrong would be a huge credibility loss.

“So I am basing it on pilots I have talked to, people in the government who are studying the issue.

“My main interest point here though is the US Government, the reason why this is getting a lot more attention very quickly I think it is twofold.

“Number one the pilots have finally come out and spoken about it which for a long time they did not want to do because they would lose their flight qualifications.

“Filmed in the Combat Information Center of the USS Omaha / July 15th 2019.

“This is corroborative electro-optic data demonstrating a significant UFO event series in a warning area off San Diego.”

In response to the footage, a Pentagon spokesperson told NBC: “I can confirm that the video you sent was taken by Navy personnel, and that the UAPTF included it in their ongoing examinations.

“I have no further information on it for you.”

Hazard hammered after appearing to celebrate on pitch

Real Madrid fans have called for ex-Chelsea hero Eden Hazard to leave after he was seen laughing on the pitch after the Blues ousted his current side from the Champions League on an awkward night for Zinedine Zidane.

Belgium playmaker Hazard made a rare start for Madrid at Stamford Bridge, where he shone for Chelsea before leaving for the Spanish giants in a mega deal almost two years ago that could be worth as much as $ 209 million.

Aside from testing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the second half, Hazard was anonymous by the standards he set during his time in London, doing little to prevent Madrid from slumping out of the semifinals with a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday.

Worse was to come as footage emerged of Hazard cheerfully congratulating Chelsea players on the pitch afterwards, embracing his opponents at a time when many supporters felt he should have been keeping a low profile after a drab display from the 13-time winners and his latest underwhelming showing in a hugely underperforming spell in Spain so far.

“Eden has to play,” coach Zidane said afterwards, facing pressure over his questionable tactics and the decision to field a player who has provided no assists and only three goals in 18 appearances this season. “He has to regain his confidence, little by little, by playing.”

Club legend Sergio Ramos was making an even rarer appearance, although his out-of-sorts performance fueled rumors that he was unfit and had played on the basis of Real Madrid’s terrible record without him in crucial matches.

“We played a semifinal and the players were prepared,” insisted Zidane. “If they played, it means that they were prepared. We can be proud of my players. We have tried and we have come this far, one step away from the final.

“Chelsea played a great game and qualified and they are to be congratulated. We can say that they deserved the victory. We tried, but in the end they deserved to win and go through.”

Some angry Madrid fans said their patience with the injury-prone star had ended. “Hazard at the end of the game is unacceptable,” said one.

“We are angry, we don’t understand him. He cannot stay at Real Madrid for another second.”

Others compared him to the likes of club icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul, who were known for their sacrifices and wholehearted performances.

Zidane has won the Champions League three times with Madrid, but his future could now rest on whether his side can retain their Liga title, with a run of four final league fixtures in two weeks starting on Sunday.

Madrid are level on points with Barcelona and two behind city rivals Atletico, having won two of their last four league matches while drawing the other two 0-0.

Perez insists Super League agreement is “binding” after two years of planning

Super League president Florentino Perez insists clubs have no get-out after secretly plotting their bombshell competition for more than two years.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham have all been condemned for signing up for the competition.

Governing bodies around the world have threatened serious punishments and there have already been hopes some clubs could pull out.

Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher said: “If one of them goes, I think it can fall like a pack of cards.”

But Real Madrid chief Perez, heading up the controversial new competition, has claimed in the first public interview that the proposals announced late on Sunday night have been in the works for over two years.

Florentino Perez has opened up on the European Super League in a controversial interview

He declared the agreement is “binding” and he is confident no clubs will back out of a plan he insists will “save football”.

Speaking on Spanish TV channel El Chiringuito, Perez said (via AS ): “We have been working a lot, more than two years.

“The pandemic has given us the finishing touch to a situation that was deteriorating. We are doing the impossible.”

Asked why they announced it now, he added: “In case we can start next season, soon.

“City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham … Inter, Milan, Juventus, Madrid, Atleti, Barcelona….When we have left it is with the certainty that we are doing well.

European Super League announcement fallout

“We all signed on Saturday. Anyone to leave? No, it is binding. They do not leave. We are all going to negotiate together.

“The English are most upset because anyone could think that the Premier League was going to disappear. Those who do not want to lose their privileges have said that.”

In response to stinging criticism, he added: “They have said that it is for the rich and it is not true. It is to save football and based on solidarity.

“Someone has been interested to explain it like this, to say that the rich will be richer and the poor, poorer. And it is not so.

“We are all going to go out and explain the truth of what this is. We are going to save football, we are not going to allow football to disappear.

“This is the only option to save the modest, the medium clubs. Those who have the right to have an opinion are the fans, those 4,000 million.

“They want better competitions, more competitive. And nobody cares about this. It is not true that we end the leagues.”

UFC novice Pimblett insists he ‘doesn’t care’ about death threats

UFC newcomer Paddy Pimblett has revealed gory threats of violence against his family he claims to have received from Georgians on social media, adding that he sees his feud with Guram Kutateladze and Liana Jojua as “irrelevant”.

Freshly-signed UK fighter Pimblett says he has received graphic descriptions of how he will be attacked after calling Georgians “stupid” and saying it was “no wonder” that Russians “terrorize their lives”.

Sweden-based Georgian UFC fighter Guram Kutateladze has criticized Pimblett and offered to fight him, and flyweight Liana Jojua also took the comments, which Pimblett says were light-hearted, to be about the Russo-Georgian conflict of 2008, saying she was “ashamed” to read them because her grandparents had died in the conflict.

“Is that one a woman?” Pimblett asked RT Sport when asked about Jojua’s outrage, adding that his jibes, in which he also called Kutateladze a “fake Russian”, were partly a reflection of Liverpool wit and an upbringing that was devoid of education about upheaval in the Georgia region.

“Someone told me she’s one and two in the UFC but I haven’t got a f***ing clue. I don’t know these people. All these fighters mentioning me are irrelevant to me. It shows how important I am to them.

“To me, calling someone a fake Russian isn’t very offensive. I’ve been called a fake Swede because of my hair. I don’t start going, ‘Oh my god, he’s racist.’ Look at his picture – he looks like Khamzat [Chimaev].

“He looks like a fake Russian. He’s not Russian, is he? He’s Georgian. ‘You’re a fake Russian – shut up, you.'”

The 26-year-old said he had been annoyed by so many people contacting him about the row and wanted to beat Kutateladze “just to shut up all these Georgians who are sending me messages on Instagram, doing my head in.”

“I don’t care what he’s got to say,” emphasized Pimblett. “It makes no difference to my life, and nor do all these Georgians messaging me saying they’re going to kill my family.

“It means nothing. They can message me all they want saying they’re going to come and f**k my mum and do this and that, but it’s not going to happen, is it?

“I’ve had major messages off Georgians saying they’re going to come and rape my mum and dad and make me watch, stuff like that. I’ve just been laughing at them because it’s hilarious.

I’ve sent my address to a few Georgians saying, ‘come and see me. I will be here every morning.’ No one’s turned up and they won’t turn up.

“No-one’s going to punish me. I wasn’t talking about any sort of war. I didn’t even know they’d been to war – it’s not something that we get taught in English schools.

“I deleted the tweet because it obviously got people’s backs up, but I wasn’t talking about the war.”

Pimblett compared his self-professed ignorance to the lack of knowledged he believed Georgians would have about the Hillsborough Disaster that killed 96 football fans at a match in England in 1989.

“It’s like saying to them that Argentina and England had the Falklands War,” he suggested. “I’ll say, ‘you’ve been terrorized’ – it’s just a word.

“Georgia and Russia having a war is not something that’s on the news in our country, so how the f**k am I supposed to know that?

“It’s like me saying to them, ‘Do you know what Hillsborough is?’ No, they don’t. I wouldn’t have jumped off the handlebars and said, ‘you’re talking about 96 people who died there.'”

‘The Baddy’ made his name with his flamboyant Cage Warriors performances before describing himself as the UFC signing of the decade when he agreed a deal at the end of last month.

“He’s a nobody who wants to be a someone,” he said, comparing himself to 29-year-old Kutateladze, who volunteered to “welcome” Pimblett to the UFC by providing his first opponent.

“If he beats me, he becomes a someone. I might not have had a UFC fight yet but I’ve got more followers than most UFC fighters.

“He probably looks at me and thinks, ‘oh, he’s a small skinny kid’. I know my skills and he wouldn’t get near me – that’s why I laughed it off.

“Guram called me a kid because I still look like a kid. I’m good-looking, whereas he looks like he’s about 45 and he’s had about seven kids.

“I’m not an idiot on the internet who needs people to accept them. I say what I want, when I want.”

‘It puts you under stress’: Russian Premier League player in alleged betting case insists lie detector test would be ‘pointless’

Russian Premier League newcomer Aleksandr Yerkin, who is one of two Tambov players to have reportedly been summoned by national football bosses as part of a betting investigation, has detailed why a polygraph is not to be trusted.

Less than a month after making his top-flight debut against Dynamo Moscow, 31-year-old Yerkin and Belarusian midfielder Dmitry Herman were questioned by Russian Football Union chiefs in a development that was said to have been confirmed by his club.

Yerkin, Herman and Tambov have always maintained their innocence and have not been charged with any wrongdoing, although the pair have been suspended from training for almost a fortnight in a move that the club said was designed to protect it from “rumors” and “negativity”.

Asked by Match TV about using a lie detector to provide his innocence, Yerkin argued: “[The body] can react differently to such a technique.

“The equipment reads pulses from sensors… heartbeats and emotions, and I suffer from stress.

“Imagine if I sat down [to] a polygraph, telling the truth, and it’s showing [I’m telling] a lie. Who will I prove [my innocence] to after that?”

“[I have] read about the detector [and] realized that it is pointless to trust this device. If you have any evidence [of my wrongdoing], provide it.

“Why would you want to put me through a polygraph, under the stress it puts you through?”

Tambov have described their position as “quite simple.” “At the moment, we do not see any legal grounds that show the guilt of our players,” they said.

“We don’t believe that the players are involved in any manipulations. Nevertheless, in order to protect the team from negativity and all sorts of rumors, the club management and coaching staff have made a joint decision to suspend Dmitry Herman and Alexander Yerkin from training until the end of the proceedings on this issue.”

A veteran of at least 11 clubs who has had spells in Lithuania, Yerkin made two appearances for Tambov following his arrival last month, playing a total of 35 minutes as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat at Dynamo and a 4-0 loss at home to Krasnodar.

The Premier League’s bottom side are currently on a dreadful 13-match winless run that has seen them lose 11 times since their most recent victory, which came last October.

“Harry will continue to serve because he is a veteran and that is what he is doing now, albeit from a different place. All of us are in different places now.”

JJ added to The Sun: “It is veterans looking after the wider community. And we have shared that goal since we met.”

The Strictly star and Harry become good friends after meeting at Headley Court in 2014 and have remained in touch.
