iOS 15 release: How to get blockbuster new iPhone features before everyone else

Apple’s new iOS 15 operating system was unleashed last month during the firm’s WWDC Developers Conference. This major software upgrade includes numerous changes including vastly improved FaceTime calls, a new look to the Safari browser and the introduction of something called Focus Mode which will allow users to switch off certain alerts or change the look of the home screen depending on what they are doing during the day.

iOS 15 won’t be officially released until the autumn but there is a way to get it on your iPhone today.

Apple has now launched its public beta programme which means you can download the new version of iOS long before it’s pushed out to millions of iPhone owners across the globe.

“Help make the next releases of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS our best yet. As a member of the Apple Beta Software Program, you can take part in shaping Apple software by test-driving pre-release versions and letting us know what you think.” Apple confirmed on its site.

YOU CAN FIND THE iOS 15 PUBLIC HERE

It’s exciting news but before you even think about installing it on your iPhone, there are some things to remember about this public beta.

Most importantly, this is not by any means finished software.

In fact, that’s the whole point of Apple making it available early as it means you’ll be tasked with reporting any bugs, incompatibilities, or glitches found in the early software.

This gives the US firm plenty of time to iron out issues before millions of people attempt to download on launch day.

Because it’s not the final build, Apple advises that users should not download the iOS 15 beta on their primary smartphone. Instead, to avoid any phone-crashing nightmares when you really need to use your smartphone, the software should be installed on a secondary iPhone.

If you are happy to proceed then it means you’ll get to play with some big new features months early and those who have signed up for alerts on the public beta release will be the first to hear the release news.

Android and iPhone warning: A loud emergency sound could blast out of your phone today

If your iPhone or Android device suddenly starts belting out a loud sound this lunchtime then don’t be alarmed. It’s all part of a trial that’s testing out a nationwide emergency warning system that will alert Britons when there is an imminent threat to life. The first test of this new siren was pushed out to some devices last week with a second alert being trialled between 1pm and 2pm today.

If you are included in the test you’ll hear the sound and receive a text which reads, “This is a mobile network operator test of the Emergency Alerts service. You do not need to take any action.”

Users are also being told to expect their devices to vibrate for around 10 seconds and the noise will belt out even if the device is switched to silent mode. They won’t work if the device is off or aeroplane mode is enabled.

It’s thought that today’s event will take place in parts of Reading, Berkshire with emergency alerts being broadcast from mobile phone masts so every compatible mobile phone or tablet in range will receive it.

The system, dubbed Emergency Alerts by the UK Government, was inspired by countries like New Zealand, which have used text messages to alert citizens for some time.

It’s hoped the alerts could be used to send messages about public health emergencies as well as industrial incidents and terror attacks.

The Cabinet Office provided more details about the alert system, saying it would send out warnings that outlined affected areas, advice on what to do and a link to any extra information.

If the tests are successful, the UK Government hopes to be able to issue text alerts to millions by “summer 2021”.

The Cabinet Office added that the system does not use people’s telephone numbers, instead sending alerts out to anyone in a specific area. The Government also revealed the alerts “do not reveal your location and do not collect any personal data. Alerts can also only be sent by authorised governmental and emergency services users”.

However, if users want to they will be able to opt-out of certain alerts via the Android or iOS settings, but the most important ones will always come through.

One word can break ANY iPhone and stop it connecting to the internet

If you own an iPhone, you need to be very careful what name you give your home Wi-Fi network. That’s because a security researcher has discovered that a bizarre bug inside iOS – the operating system that powers every iPhone model – can completely disable the smartphone’s ability to connect to Wi-Fi if the network has a certain name.

And when we say “completely disable”, we really mean it. If you use this name for your Wi-Fi network, your iPhone will reboot. When it’s turned back on, the Wi-Fi toggle in the Settings menu will be switched to “off” and you’ll be unable to switch it back on.

Not only will you be restricted to mobile internet, but since your Wi-Fi is disabled, you’ll lose a number of useful iPhone features, including AirDrop and AirPlay.

Security researcher Carl Schou was the first person to discover the quirky glitch. The name you can’t use for your Wi-Fi network is: %p%s%s%s%s%n.

Schuo has not revealed how he figured out the baffling bug. However, Apple-centric blog 9To5Mac claims that the string is causing a memory corruption – which triggers a safety procedure built into iOS to kill the entire process. Unfortunately, while that does end the memory corruption, it also disables Wi-Fi for good.

Unless you live with the sort of prankster who thinks this would be a fun thing to do… it does seem unlikely that you’ll run across this very often. We’re sure Apple will be working on a fix for this, but in the meantime, it’s worth swerving any Wi-Fi networks with % symbols in their name.

If you’ve already made the mistake, don’t worry, the bug doesn’t seem to permanently damage your iPhone. It is possible to bring back Wi-Fi on your handset, but you’ll need to reset all of your network settings, which means joining all of your Wi-Fi networks again (so you’ll need to remember those all-important passwords), changes cellular settings and VPN access settings. To do that, head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Watch out Three and EE! Vodafone reveals more affordable way to buy your next iPhone

Vodafone thinks it has come up with the perfect way to buy your next smartphone. The UK network has just announced the launch of its new EVO plans which offer a number of features rivals such as EE and Three can’t match. Vodafone says that EVO is “setting a new benchmark in flexibility and value for customers” with those signing up able to decide exactly how they want to pay for their shiny new iPhone or Android device.

EVO basically lets you trade in an old phone to reduce the upfront cost, then you can put down as much money as you like to bring the monthly payments down even further. The remainder of the balance can then be paid over 12 to 36 months with Vodafone not charging any interest on the amount you owe.

The network says customers will be able to pick and choose how much data they need each month with deals starting from 2GB. Unlimited options will also be available. Along with that more affordable way to buy a new phone there are other benefits to EVO including the option to upgrade to a new smartphone before the end of the contract.

These flexible upgrades mean you aren’t tied to the device for the full length of the contract, and after 12 months it’s possible to trade things in and use the value of the current device to help pay things off.

Speaking about the launch Max Taylor, Consumer Director at Vodafone UK, said: “In 2019, we shook up the market with 5G at no extra cost and Unlimited data plans. Now we’re changing the market again. With budgets squeezed for so many people, we’re launching a completely new way of buying a smartphone focused on ensuring our customers are in control and getting the best possible value.

“New Vodafone EVO allows customers to get the smartphone they want at the price they choose. We are setting a new benchmark for flexibility, combining the benefits of device contracts of up to three years, a market-leading trade-in service and the option to upgrade from one year.

“We’re putting the customer in charge – we’re giving them unbeatable flexibility and value, but making sure they don’t have to compromise on quality, with a great network, a great loyalty programme, and great service.”

Apple releases emergency iOS update for older iPhone models to fix dangerous flaws

Apple has launched an important update for older iPhone and iPad owners today. While these devices aren’t supported with the latest version of iOS – missing out on the most exciting new features, designs and apps – Apple has released an update to fix a number of worrying vulnerabilities discovered inside the software. Since iPhone users with these older models aren’t used to getting excited about the arrival of new emoji or widgets… there’s less incentive to check the Settings app for new versions of iOS, compared to those with the latest handsets who are now already on tenterhooks about the upcoming features in iOS 15 coming later this year.

However, there is a new update available for older iPhones and it’s much, much more important than shiny new widgets or a refreshed design from Apple. The latest update, iOS 12.5.4, is available right now on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the 6th generation iPod Touch can also download the patch now. The last time that Apple rolled out a new update to these devices was back in May 2021.

The only reason that Apple is pushing out the update to older iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch owners is to try to quickly fix a number of issues in iOS, specifically two problems with WebKit and a memory corruption glitch. All three of these issues could allow bad actors to execute remote code on your device – leaving the door open for malware to take over your handset, keep track of your data, or worse.

“This update provides important security updates and is recommended for all users,” Apple urged all affected iPhone owners in the notes published alongside the iOS 12.5.4 update.

Here are the full details of what iOS 12.5.4 is designed to fix on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Security

  • Available for: iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation)
  • Impact: Processing a maliciously crafted certificate may lead to arbitrary code execution
  • Description: A memory corruption issue in the ASN.1 decoder was addressed by removing the vulnerable code.
  • CVE-2021-30737: xerub

WebKit

  • Available for: iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation)
  • Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
  • Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved state management.
  • CVE-2021-30761: an anonymous researcher

  • Description: A use after free issue was addressed with improved memory management.
  • CVE-2021-30762: an anonymous researcher

If you have one of the affected devices, you’ll need to head to the Settings app on your device. Then, you need to go to General > Software Update and hit the Download button.

iOS 15 release: The biggest and best 5 features coming to your iPhone soon

Apple iOS 15 release

Apple iOS 15 release (Image: APPLE)

There’s a big new update coming to your iPhone later this year with Apple announcing the release of its all-new iOS 15 operating system. This major software upgrade was announced last week during the firm’s yearly WWDC Developers Conference and there’s plenty to look forward to including big changes to FaceTime, Maps and Safari. iOS 15 will be pushed out to all iPhones – already running iOS 14 – in the autumn and here are 5 of the biggest upgrades coming to your device soon.

FACETIME

One of the biggest changes in iOS 15 will be a massive upgrade to Apple’s FaceTime video-calling service. With millions of relying on video calling apps to stay in touch with friends and family during the current health crisis, Apple has doubled-down on FaceTime, which is pretty simplistic compared to some of its biggest rivals. With iOS 15, that all changes thanks to a bunch of improvements aimed at making speaking to contacts on a screen feel far more immersive.

FaceTime will now boast Spatial Audio, which uses some clever technology to make it appear as if the voices of friends are coming from exactly where their face is positioned on your iPhone or iPad display. This should make it feel like you’re in the room with your friends of family. You’ll need to use headphones that support Spatial Audio, such as the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.

Apple unveil their brand new purple iPhone 12

If you’re in the middle of a video chat and the neighbour starts mowing the garden there’s also “Noise Isolation”, which removes all distracting audio around you so the only thing the people on the call can hear is your dulcet tones.

Another nice feature that fans are sure to love is Portrait Mode. Just like when you use Portrait Mode to snap a selfie, FaceTime now adds a blur behind your face so you stand out more on calls – it also means friends can’t snoop on every book title on your bookcase.

Also included in this update is the ability to schedule a call for a set time with contacts then reminded so they join at the right time.

All that sounds great but perhaps the biggest new feature is SharePlay. This lets anyone share their music or video with everyone on the call.

Playback is synced across everyone’s devices, so friends can add new songs to a queue or skip a bad choice on everyone’s iPhone or iPad. Disney+, TikTok, and a number of other streaming apps have already committed to implementing the feature when iOS 15 launches later this year. You’ll also be able to share what is happening on your screen.

Apple iOS 15

FOCUS MODE

If you’re always getting distracted by your phone then the new Focus Mode will help. This option is being introduced to allow users to switch off certain alerts or change the look of the home screen depending on what they are doing during the day.

That means in work hours you can hide addictive games but, once you’ve finished your shift, emails from the boss can automatically be tucked away. Focus Mode lets you set multiple categories for your device – Work, Home, and more with each setting switching the apps displayed on your home screen.

Your iPhone can also automatically switch between modes based on your location. Once in Focus Mode, contacts will also be alerted that you are busy which should end any arguments that you haven’t responded to a text.

Apple iOS 15 release

Apple iOS 15 release features improved Maps (Image: APPLE)

MAPS

Apple Maps is getting a major reboot with the whole service being given a massive lick of paint.

Head into some of the world’s biggest cities and you’ll now find a highly detailed view with roads that show every traffic light and pedestrian crossing. Buildings have also been preciously mapped and iconic landmarks now appear in the most intricate detail.

Another useful featuring coming to Maps is a three-dimensional city-driving experience. This birds-eye view gives a much clearer picture of the road ahead and should help to make sure you never miss a turn or junction on the motorway.

If you prefer hopping on the bus rather than your car then Apple is improving its public transport directions with maps now showing you when your stop is approaching and when to hop off.

Live Text allows you copy text from an image (Image: APPLE)

LIVE TEXT

Now, this is a clever new feature that iPhone users are going to love.

Live Text adds the ability to copy-paste any text from within a photo. So, menus, restaurant names, passport details and even hand written notes can be copied and pasted into Messages and emails as editable text.

The feature also works with Apple’s Translate app, so you can use the feature within your camera or Photos app to help work out what you want to order when travelling abroad.

NEW SAFARI

Finally, Safari is getting an upgrade with the search and tab bar being moved to the bottom of the screen to make things easier to use one-handed.

This new tab bar has also been made more compact and lightweight so it should interfere less with what you are looking at in the browser.

There’s also get a new Tab Groups option that allows users to save tabs and easily access them at any time across iPhone, iPad, or Mac. And there’s now a customisable start page and plus web extensions finally make it to Safari on iOS.

Speaking about the update, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said: “For many customers, iPhone has become indispensable, and this year we’ve created even more ways it can enhance our daily lives.

“iOS 15 helps users stay connected while sharing experiences in real time, gives them new tools to help reduce distraction and find focus, uses intelligence to enhance the photos experience, and, with huge upgrades to Maps, brings new ways to explore the world. We can’t wait for customers to experience it.”
