Kate and William honour Diana at poignant ceremony as Harry's absence sorely felt

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge held a postponed reception at Kensington Palace to celebrate the artwork of the Princess of Wales that was unveiled to the public last summer. This comes on the same day that the Duchess of Cambridge held everyone’s attention as she made a keynote speech on addiction at a campaign event for the Forward Trust. Prince William, 39, and his wife invited people who made donations towards the statue to their home to thank them for their contributions.

While Harry didn’t make the journey from California for the event he is understood to have been in touch privately with donors who supported the artwork.

The statue depicts the Princess of Wales with a short haircut, dressed in the clothes of the 1990s. The bronze figure, crafted by artist Ian Rank-Broadley, is then circled by three children.

Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris in 1997, five years after her divorce from Prince Charles. At the time, Prince William was 15 years old, and Prince Harry, now 37, was just 12.

However, Prince Harry did not attend the event in honour of his mother, choosing not to fly back to the UK from California.

Although Tuesday afternoon’s Kensington Palace event was held behind doors out of public view, the Duchess of Cambridge had made a splash with her impassioned speech on the effects of addiction as a patron of the Forward Trust.

She spoke with popular television presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly on the turmoil which families go through when it comes to addiction.

She said: “Even hearing some of the stories today, there’s that feeling that you have to carry that secret alone and actually once you start sharing your stories, people have either experienced it themselves or know someone that’s gone through addiction.”

Then appearing at the more private Kensington Palace event, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were able to examine the statue in the presence of those who had supported the project.

Prince Harry has resided in California with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

Their split from the Royal Family came less than two years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018, when the Duchess became a member of the Firm.

The royal couple renounced their duties as senior working royals and relocated to Meghan’s home state in the USA.

Since the highly public rift, the Sussexes revealed all in an explosive television interview with American chat show host, Oprah Winfrey.

During the bombshell interview, the Duchess of Sussex claimed one senior member of the Royal Family expressed concerns about what colour their son Archie’s skin, would be when he was born.

Prince Harry refused to divulge which member of the Royal Family had voiced this, but Prince William refuted the allegations after the interview was aired.

The Duke of Cambridge responded that the monarchy was “very much not a racist family.”

The Sussexes first welcomed Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, two, followed by Lilibet Diana earlier this year.

The Duchess of Sussex also confessed details of her worsening mental health following her wedding to Prince Harry and claimed she felt unsupported by the Firm during her pregnancy with Archie.

Royal POLL: Who should lead UK’s green revolution? Kate and William, Charles or Boris?

Royal POLL: Who should lead UK's green revolution? Kate and William, Charles or Boris?

On Sunday, Prince William awarded five global thinkers with a £1million grant each, to develop their climate-saving ideas and technologies. The entire ceremony was eco-minded, from asking celebrity guests to choose eco-friendly outfits, to powering music performances with energy produced by cyclists.

The winners of the awards included The Republic of Costa Rica for its efforts to protect forests and restore ecosystems. Costa Rica’s policy pays citizens to plant trees, reversing decades of deforestation and leading to a boom in ecotourism.

Smaller independent companies were also rewarded, such as Coral Vita, a land-based coral farm in the Bahamas that restores dying coral reefs by growing coral 50 times faster and replanting it on the seafloor.

The Prince dedicated the awards to young people who feel despairing over the future of the climate.

He said: “For too long, we haven’t done enough to protect the planet for your future, but Earthshot is for you.

“In the next ten years we are going to act.

“We are going to find the solutions to repair our planet.”

Kate showed she was equally as passionate about fighting climate change in her speech about preserving wild spaces.

She said: “If we don’t act now, we will permanently destabilize our planet, and we will rob our children of the future they deserve.”

The Duke and Duchess echoed Prince Charles’s sentiment as he spoke on a lack of global leadership over climate change in a BBC interview released just one week before the Earthshot awards.

Prince Charles said: “I’ve always felt that we’re over-exploiting and damaging nature by not understanding how much we depend on everything that nature provides.”

He added that it’s taken “far too long” for the narrative to change on climate activism, and he expressed a frustration with world leaders.

“They just talk, and the problem is to get action on the ground, which is what I’ve been trying to do for the last 40 years,” he said.

Prince Charles has set up multiple eco-organisations over the years, including the Prince’s Rainforests Project to fight tropical deforestation, and the Prince’s May Day Network which has made over 12,500 pledges to take action on climate change.

Prince Charles has even installed biomass boiler systems to Buckingham Palace and put solar panels on Clarence house and Highgrove’s farm buildings.

These demands are some of the most forward-thinking green policy the modern world has seen, making Britain a leader in climate change.

But many activists join the Royal Family in arguing that political leaders and business leaders have not done enough and still need to do more.

Currently, Insulate Britain’s protests are ongoing, blocking traffic and demanding that the Prime Minister approve a plan to insulate all houses across the UK, to stop energy wastage.

Royal Family LIVE: Relaxed Kate and William ignored long list of rules handed to guests

Queen Elizabeth has given permission for Buckingham Palace to be lit up in green to celebrate the Earthshot prize awards ceremony.

Later today, Prince William and his judges will give a £1 million prize to five different green entrepreneurs, inventors and project managers as part of the first-ever Earthshot Prize awards ceremony.

Divided into five categories created for the occasion (the restoration and protection of nature, air cleanliness, ocean revival, waste-free living and climate action), the winners will inaugurate the competition.

The Earthshot Prize is expected to last until 2030 and will award £5m every year.

Showing support for the prize, Buckingham Palace literally turned green with new lighting on Saturday evening.

On Instagram, the official account of the Royal Family reminded its 10m followers that the prize was “created by The Duke of Cambridge and The Royal Foundation” and “has led a worldwide search for the most inspiring and innovative solutions to the environmental challenges facing us all.”

‘Requires seamless performance’ Kate is prevented from doing one simple everyday function

‘Requires seamless performance’ Kate is prevented from doing one simple everyday function

Daniela Elser has explained how Kate and the other members of the Firm are required to put on a “seamless, perfect performance” on every outing. In a new column for news.com.au, Ms Elser analysed how Kate’s interaction with Rami Malek on the red carpet earlier this month sums up how any working member of the royal family has to be on high alert at all times.

“For better or worse [royalty] is about slipping into one-shouldered Alexander McQueen confection, as Kate did, and, no matter the sleep deprivation of having a baby, getting out there giving good duchess,” the royal expert writes.

“You cannot yawn on the job, look bored or lose your focus for a second because every blink, syllable and twitch is being photographed and videos by the press and the smartphone-toting public.

“It requires a seamless, perfect performance every. Damn. Time.”

When actor Rami Malek made a reference to his encounter with the Duchess of Cambridge in 2019, he revealed she was “taken aback” by his question before changing the subject.

“I just looked at Princess Kate at one point and I said, ‘This must be exhausting,’ and she said, ‘Why?’ And I said, ‘You just had a baby, right?’” recalled Malek during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.

“She was taken aback, and she said, ‘How are you doing?’ And I said, ‘How are you?’ And in the most regal, elegant way she gave me a look, but you can tell. Imagine dressed to the nines, having to talk to all these actors.

“They’re so careful, but it was so cool because I think I caught her off-guard for a second and had that look of, in the most elegant, professional, royal way, ‘Yes, it’s a lot having a kid’.”

Ms Elser also references other royal figures who had issues with adapting to the royal protocol having had no training whatsoever.

“That is long briefings and interminable stretches of making small talk and shaking hands in the outer reaches of Wales.

“And it is doing this again and again and again and with no one ever particularly praising you for doing what is actually just the bare minimum of HRH-dom.”
