Elvis Presley’s cousin on first seeing The King record in 1958 – ‘I couldn’t believe it’

Elvis Presley’s cousin on first seeing The King record in 1958 – ‘I couldn’t believe it’

Elvis Presley shot to fame in 1956 and moved his family into Graceland a year later. One member of his Memphis Mafia inner circle was his cousin Billy Smith, who was just a boy at the time. And now over 60 years later, he’s shared his memories of first seeing Elvis record in the studio back in 1958.

Appearing on the Memphis Mafia Kid YouTube channel with his son Danny, Billy said: “When I first went to hear Elvis record was in 1958.

“He was home on leave and had to do a session because he had to have so many songs in the can before he was overseas and all.”

From 1958-60, The King did his army service in West Germany, while his manager Colonel Tom Parker rolled out some pre-recorded singles to keep the star in the public eye while he was away.

Elvis Presley‘s cousin shared: “And I remember I was in the Studio B with him and all I could do was stand there and watch him.”

Billy continued: “He’d have a break…I’d go get him water…but I finally got to thinking, ‘He don’t like this much’.

“He didn’t say anything, but I just thought, ‘He’s probably not real crazy about me gawking.’

“So I finally got the hint enough for myself that I went on and watched him from a distance.”

Yet even from further away, Elvis’ cousin was amazed at the talent he was witnessing.

Billy said: “It was just something different. To put my finger on it, I can’t. But I feel like so many of Elvis’ fans know exactly what I’m talking about.

“It’s just that one little difference that made Elvis extra special.

“When Elvis picked a song to record, he usually looked at it and thought, ‘What can I do with it?’, especially during the movie days.

“I think he put his heart and soul into every song he recorded, good or bad.”

Elvis Presley: ‘Unusual’ aspect of Graceland’s dining room The King kept when he moved in

Elvis Presley: ‘Unusual’ aspect of Graceland’s dining room The King kept when he moved in

Elvis Presley famously lived at Graceland from 1957-1977 and made a number of additions and changes to the property including the Jungle Room. The Memphis mansion was previously owned by the Moore family and there was one “unusual” part of the home that The King kept the same. This “unique” aspect of Graceland is located in its dining room to this day.

Earlier this year, Express.co.uk took part in a virtual live tour of the Graceland mansion that was expertly guided by in-house archivist Angie Marchese.

While in the dining room, she pointed out the two buddha statues at the end of the room on either side, sitting on shelves in the corners.

Angie said: “Now the really cool thing about this is these built-in bookshelves and buddhas were here when Elvis bought Graceland, which is so unusual.

“So the Moores actually had these here and Elvis just loved them.”

When Lisa Marie is at Graceland, the staff turn on the 1970s era kitchen appliances, which are kept off during tours for fire safety.

Angie also shared how Elvis’ daughter likes to sit in the porch area just outside The Jungle Room.

It’s the same spot that The King’s grandmother Minnie Mae like to relax in, which isn’t surprising considering the view of the horses.

After the tour’s conclusion, a fan asked Angie: “When Priscilla and Lisa Marie visit Graceland do they listen to records on the jukebox in the TV room and do any of the family members play either the piano in the Music Room or the one in the Racquetball court? And do they ever swim in the pool?”

Angie said: “They have listened to music in the house, but not in the jukebox on the record players.

“I have never seen any of the family play the pianos.

“But we do keep them tuned and clean to preserve them as instruments in case they want to.

“No swimming in the pool either. Their favourite thing to do is ride golf carts all over the property.”

Elvis Presley’s ex-lover claims The King was in Washington DC to see her not Nixon – WATCH

Elvis Presley’s ex-lover claims The King was in Washington DC to see her not Nixon – WATCH

On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley managed to arrange a meeting with President Richard Nixon in The White House’s Oval Office. The King was concerned with the youth culture of the day and wanted to offer his help. But did you know his former lover Joyce Bova claims Elvis was primarily in Washington DC to see her?

While Elvis was married to Priscilla Presley, Joyce claims she had a romantic relationship with The King from 1969 to 1972 as recounted in her recently updated book Don’t Ask Forever – My Love Affair with Elvis.

Speaking with Elvis Presley expert Billy Stallings Spa Guy in the video below, Joyce said: “The one about Nixon makes me wild because Elvis was here to see me not Nixon!

“I wrote [the book] as my little tribute to Elvis because he was an amazing human being as everyone knows.

“And it’s just my little part…just a couple years, three years. The lies that have been told around me have been really hurtful all these years but I keep a low profile.”

Joyce was 24 when she met Elvis while working for the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee.

The two hit it off in Las Vegas back in 1969 and she even claims she was pregnant with The King’s child at one point.

As for Elvis travelling to DC in December 1970, Joyce says that the star had come to find her after they had a nasty argument in Las Vegas, while meeting Nixon was an afterthought.

On December 30, she was with The King when he stopped off at a donut shop in the US capital – a story that has been reimagined by Michael Shannon in the movie Elvis and Nixon.

Joyce continued: “We drove in and they saw that it was Elvis in the limousine…they weren’t blacked out windows back then.

“They went absolutely crazy, they loved him and he loved them and he was having a wonderful time.

“Ben [the limo driver] went in and got the donuts and Elvis got out and then Sonny followed right behind getting a little nervous to make sure everything was going to be okay. And Janice and I both stayed in the limousine with the windows rolled down; listening to everything and having a good time.”

Today, the donut shop is gone and a Kentucky Fried Chicken replaced it on Bladensburg Road at New York Avenue.

Joyce’s tell-all book synopsis includes: “Within the pages of her book she details what life was like with the superstar and the ‘man’, describing the ups and downs (literally), mood swings, medical problems and exhilarating, heart-pounding performances in Vegas and on tour.

“She recounts the truth behind the Presley/Nixon meeting in December 1970 and the fact that Elvis was in D.C. to find her after a nasty argument in Vegas, and that Nixon was an afterthought.

“Don’t Ask Forever tells about life at Graceland, the antics of the Memphis Mafia and, finally, Joyce’s realization that Presley had fallen victim to prescription drugs.

“You will laugh and cry at Joyce’s candid and revealing story. It is an intimate but vivid portrait of the “brightest star that will continue to shine forever”. A must read for every Elvis fan.”

Elvis ex Linda Thompson returns to Graceland where she lived with King almost 50 years ago

Elvis ex Linda Thompson returns to Graceland where she lived with King almost 50 years ago

Elvis Presley dated Miss Tennessee model Linda Thompson from 1972-76, with the couple living together at his Graceland mansion. Now, almost 50 years ago since she moved in, the 71-year-old has returned to her old home of almost half a decade. Linda shared a selection of photos of herself inside some of Graceland’s most famous rooms.

Linda Thompson wrote on her Instagram: “I took a walk down memory lane today at my former home, where I lived for 4 1/2 years – Graceland in Memphis.

“I also revisited the airplanes that I flew on to countless concerts all around the country with the greatest entertainer who ever lived, Elvis Presley.

“It’s surreal to remember decorating with him the legendary jungle room, stained glass peacocks in the living/music room, the fabric covered pool room, TV room & other areas – as well as the Lisa Marie airplane.”

The 71-year-old was on her way through Memphis to Elvis’ birthplace in Tupelo, Mississippi, just south of the Tennessee state line.

The New York Elvis concerts attracted some fellow music stars who The King had influenced before they were famous.

Graceland added: “David Bowie, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Art Garfunkel were among some of the music stars spotted at the shows.

“Nine days after the last Madison Square Garden show, RCA released a live album from one of the shows titled “Elvis as Recorded at Madison Square Garden.”

Meanwhile, a biopic of The King’s life and career has been shot on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Moulin Rouge’s Baz Luhrmann has directed the Elvis movie, which stars Austin Butler as The King and Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker.

The Warner Bros production rebuilt Graceland on the Australian set with expert advice thanks to the Memphis mansion museum’s archivists.

Baz is currently editing the film in post-production but there’s no sign of a first trailer just yet.

Elvis will hit cinemas on June 3, 2022.

Elvis Presley's father detailed real reason the King left Priscilla Presley

Elvis Presley's father detailed real reason the King left Priscilla Presley

Elvis Presley first met Priscilla Presley (née Beaulieu) in Germany while he was stationed in the army. The star, who had found a great deal of success already in America, was drafted in 1958 during which he went to Friedberg, Germany. During this time he met the young Priscilla. After their relationship blossomed, he brought her back to live with him in Graceland in 1963. The couple were married in 1967 after being together for almost a decade. A year later, their daughter Lisa Marie Presley was born.

Unfortunately for the family, the couple split up in 1973 following an affair between Priscilla and a karate instructor, Mike Stone.

Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, tells a different story, however.

In 1978 the patriarch of the family wrote a lengthy piece in the magazine Good Housekeeping following Elvis’ death in 1977.

Speaking about his son’s relationships, Vernon wrote: “His mother [Gladys] and I didn’t try to influence Elvis’ choice of a wife any more than we’d tried to influence his choice of a career. We didn’t care whom he married just so long as she was the girl with whom he’d be happiest.”

Vernon then detailed how Priscilla stayed with him in Memphis to finish high school in the early 1960s.

During this time, he said: “Being an Air Force officer’s daughter, Priscilla had been brought up to be disciplined and strong-minded, but she is also a tender and loving girl.”

He then revealed why he believed the couple’s relationship fell apart after just six years.

Vernon wrote: “I believe that Elvis’ marriage to her failed simply because he realised after the wedding that he didn’t really want to be married.”

Ginger was in Elvis’ home Graceland when he died on August 16, 1977. She was the final girlfriend of the star and had been given a diamond engagement ring just before his death.

Vernon wrote: “Finally, just a day or so before he died, I told him: ‘I keep hearing and reading that you’re going to announce your engagement.

“‘Is that right? When are you going to get married?’ [Elvis said:] ‘Only God knows.'”

Vernon added: “I got a feeling then that maybe he was changing his mind about marriage.”

Despite Elvis and Priscilla splitting up, they remained good friends after the divorce.

Priscilla received a staggering $ 725,000 settlement and the pair agreed to share custody of their daughter, Lisa-Marie.

On the day they left the courthouse, Elvis and Priscilla walked out of their divorce proceedings hand in hand.

Metallica: Kirk Hammett took inspiration from Stephen King novel for second album

Metallica: Kirk Hammett took inspiration from Stephen King novel for second album

Both Metallica and legendary novelist Stephen King have the same sort of themes as they both write about some of the deeper topics in life. This connection was not lost on Hammett, who previously spoke out about using King as inspiration for one of their biggest-selling albums to date.

Hammett told the story on one of his blog posts where he revealed he found the inspiration for the band’s second album, Ride The Lightning.

He wrote: “One huge thing about my personal connection with Stephen King occurred when I was reading a chapter in The Stand.

“The chapter had a guy in prison who was waiting to Ride The Lightning, and I just thought: ‘Oh my God, what a cool collection of adjectives and nouns that is!’”

The Stand was King’s fifth novel and focussed on a worldwide pandemic wreaking havoc through the lands.

During the novel, as noted by Hammett, one of the characters – Lloyd Henreid – is in prison and about to be executed by electric chair.

This turn of phrase was enough to inspire Hammett into writing the incredible song Ride The Lightning. The guitarist went on to name the entire album after the the song.

Hammett went on: “I told [the band’s singer] James [Hetfield], he thought the same, and the rest is Metallica history!

“Pick up a copy of The Stand if you’re obsessive enough and find the chapter about a guy on death row where King actually writes the words.”

King has remained a fan of Metallica for years and most recently touched upon still listening to them.

The author revealed he fuels his creative process by listening to heavy metal.

Speaking to The Atlantic, King said: “I listen to music when I rewrite now. I don’t listen to music when I compose anymore. I can’t. I’ve lost the ability to multitask that way!

“[I listen to] Metallica, Anthrax. I still listen to those guys … There’s a band called the Living Things that I like a lot. Very loud group.”

King did, however, go on to add: “I never cared for Ozzy very much.”

He also confessed his love for the band back in 2016 on Twitter.

The writer told his 6.4 million followers: “I believe I’ll have a Heavy Metal Weekend, starting with Slayer, Sabbath, and Motorhead.”

He added: “Saving Metallica & [Judas] Priests for Sunday.”

Elvis Presley's family share what The King really called the Jungle Room – WATCH

Elvis Presley's family share what The King really called the Jungle Room – WATCH

According to Rolling Stone, it was a journalist who first referred to the Den as the Jungle Room.

Of course, Elvis didn’t have the Den furnished in the way it remains today until 1974. While for the first 17 years he lived at Graceland, the space looked totally different.

According to the Memphis mansion’s official website: “This room was once the exterior access to the basement.

“In the 1960s, during one of Elvis’ home improvement projects, it was added to the back of the house – first as a screened in porch and then closed in as a room a few years later.”

Elvis Presley: Linda Thompson reunited with jacket she gave King ‘Holds so many memories’

Elvis Presley: Linda Thompson reunited with jacket she gave King ‘Holds so many memories’
Elvis Presley dated many women across his short life, but one of his best-known girlfriends is Linda Thompson. The former Miss Tennessee model lived with The King at Graceland from 1972-1976 after his separation and divorce from Priscilla. And now the 71-year-old has revealed that she’s been reunited with a jacket she had made for Elvis.
The early seventies era leather jacket has a silver bottom half, while the top is covered in multicoloured rainbow flames.

Wearing the piece of Elvis Presley history in a photo on her Instagram account, Linda Thompson wrote: “I had these beautiful matching motorcycle jackets made for Elvis and me many years ago.

“I must admit it was sentimental to try on Elvis‘s jacket today courtesy of a very generous collector at the Lone Star Elvis festival.

“I honestly felt I was getting a hug from the jacket because it held so many memories for me.”

Linda was attending the Lone Star Elvis Festival at the Palace Arts Centre in Grapevine, Texas.

Sharing some videos of Elvis Tribute Artists there, she wrote: “There were some very good performances by ETAs today. I think we all had a great time and I’d like to thank everyone involved…especially @kwick_pro.”

The 1974 Elvis jacket was put up for auction in 2016 at Julien’s Auctions and after 4 bids sold for $ 50,000.

A description included “The jacket was made by East West Musical Instruments Co. of San Francisco.”

While it added: “Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Ginger Alden stating that Presley gave the jacket to her while at Graceland in 1977. No size present.”

After Linda amicably broke up with Elvis in late 1976 to have a more normal life, The King began dating his final girlfriend Ginger, who it seems he later gifted the jacket to.

The later of authenticity signed by her reads: “This multicolor silver leather motorcycle jacket was worn by Elvis Presley and personally given to me, Ginger Alden, by Elvis Presley at his home, Graceland in 1977.”

As for Linda’s matching jacket, she keeps it in her Elvis closet, which her sons Brody and Brandon Jenner went through when filming The Princes of Malibu a few years ago.

In a clip of her sons going through her Elvis closet that she posted several weeks ago, one of them finds the multicoloured jacket.

Her son said: “What is this thing? Mom really wore this? What the hell was she thinking?”

During an interview last year, Linda was asked to share something about Elvis that might not be that well known to fans.

She told Reel Talker: “There’s a lot about Elvis that people don’t know. Most of it is very, very good. He was an incredible human being, very generous – generous to a fault.”

Linda pointed out how Elvis was a twin whose brother was tragically stillborn and that The King had webbed toes.

The King’s ex-girlfriend said: “He had twin toes, which meant that his second toe from the big toe and the third toe were conjoined up to what would be the knuckle.

“And I used to tease him a lot about having webbed toes! So he had twin toes. That’s something most people don’t know.”

She also shared how Elvis would die his hair jet black for drama when his natural colour was dirty blonde.
