‘Nervous’ Prince George ate a live ant with adventurer Bear Grylls at King’s Cup regatta

Bear Grylls recalls the moment Prince George ate his first ant

Prince George, eight, had an unusual snack when he was at the King’s Cup regatta off the Isle of Wight in 2019, according to TV adventurer Bear Grylls. Speaking to Susana Reid and Martin Lewis on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, the ex-servicemen in the 21 SAS regiment said it was a “privilege to give the future King his first ant”.

Mr Grylls, 47, went on to add George was a “little hero” and recalled in detail how he met the then six-year-old prince.

Prince George had his memorable encounter with the Old Etonian after his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 39, invited Bear Grylls to skipper a yacht at the three-day charity sailing race.

Good Morning Britain co-anchor Susanna Reid, 50, prompted the insect-ingesting conversation on Tuesday.

Ms Reid, who has co-hosted ITV’s morning show since 2014, asked: “You encouraged our future King to eat some ants, didn’t you?”

“Well I didn’t really meet, we were doing something for Prince William’s King’s Cup event, we were down there and the Royal Family were there,” Bear replied.

“It was actually the Duchess of Cambridge’s mother who said, ‘Would you come and say hi to Prince George, he’s a big fan of your Netflix interactive adventure show’.

“So we were chatting and he was down here and just as we were chatting, a stream of ants went across his feet.

“Him and me looked at them and he looked at me with those amazed, wide eyes.

“I said, ‘Come on, we’ve got to eat one,’ and he went, ‘Really?’

“We ate one and it was a privilege to give the future King his first ant.

“His eyes lit up as they do with anyone when they are out in the wild and they face a few fears.

“Good for him, a little hero.”

According to MailOnline, Bear also revealed further details of the insect-eating incident in his memoir.

Writing in Never Give Up, Bear said: “I knew that look well. I smiled at him and said, ‘Have you ever eaten an ant?’ He shook his head nervously. ‘You want to? Just you and me?’ He looked around, then back at me, and nodded. I grabbed one ant for him and got him to hold it between his fingers, then got one for myself. ‘One, two, three, and in it goes… ready?’

“He looked more nervous now. I smiled reassuringly. ‘It’ll be fine. We can do this… OK? One, two, three, here we go!’ I will never tire of that wonderful grimace on people’s faces as they eat something from the survivor menu for the first time. Whoever they are, it’s always priceless.

“But I don’t think I will ever see wider eyes than Prince George’s, nor a broader grin. It was a fun moment that I hope, when he is king one day and I am an old man, he might still remember. After all, who can ever forget eating their first ant?”

But Prince George has been known to embrace the outdoors life.

Speaking about the Cambridges’ helping in the garden, George’s maternal grandmother Carole Middleton, 66, said: “It’s important for children to grow up appreciating nature, and part of that is allowing them to get a bit muddy.”

Prince William has also shared how his eldest son has become more environmentally-aware in recent months.

During his interview with the BBC’s chief political correspondent Adam Fleming on Newscast, the Duke of Cambridge said: “I didn’t realise, but talking to him the other day he was already showing that he was getting a bit confused and a bit sort of annoyed by the fact they went out litter picking one day and then the very next day they did the same route, same time and pretty much all the same litter they picked up again.

“And I think that for him he was trying to understand how and where it all came from.

“He couldn’t understand, he’s like, ‘Well, we cleaned this, why has it not gone away?’”

Good Morning Britain airs on ITV on weekdays from 6am and 9am.

Heavyweight king’s first challenger? ‘I can beat anyone!’

Robert Helenius could emerge as the first opponent for the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua rematch, with the WBA set to decide their mandatory challenger.

Joshua has activated a clause for an immediate rematch with Usyk, which will be held next spring after the Ukrainian star claimed the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight belts with a points win last month.

But the victorious champion must then fulfil mandatory defences of his titles, with Helenius potentially next in line to challenge after he overcame Adam Kownacki in a WBA final eliminator.

Usyk holds the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles

“Right now we are focused on the WBA mandatory position,” Helenius’ manager Markus Sundman told Sky Sports.

“Robert fought a WBA elimination bout in March 2020 against Adam Kownacki, and he placed a stamp on that victory in the rematch on October 9.

“Usyk should really be Robert’s next bout.

“There is no more deserving challenger in the WBA. Charr, Bryan, Dubois, are they more deserving? I think not.

“Sometimes you have to dig your heels in the ground and fight for something important, and I can’t think of anything in sport more important than the heavyweight championship.

“We will do what is necessary to assure Robert’s rightful position as Usyk’s next WBA mandatory.”

How could AJ approach a rematch with Usyk?

Joshua defeated IBF challenger Kubrat Pulev last December, while he was beaten by Usyk, his WBO challenger, meaning that the WBA are the next governing body to enforce a world title defence.

“In the end, of course we have respect for [president] Gilberto (Mendoza) and the WBA, and we think that ultimately they will do the correct thing and formally order Robert as the next mandatory,” said Sundman.

“The WBA mandatory is due next, and that must be Robert.”

The Finnish contender is also guided by influential advisor Mike Borao, who has steered Charles Martin and Frank Sanchez to within striking distance of world heavyweight title shots.

Helenius hopes to be confirmed as the next challenger for the Usyk vs Joshua 2 winner

Helenius’ team believe he can become the modern-day ‘Cinderella Man’, emulating the exploits of James J Braddock, who famously shocked Max Baer to become heavyweight champion in 1935.

“I am happy with my performance against Adam, but I know I can do even better,” Helenius told Sky Sports.

“This is the best I’ve felt since 2011. I think I showed in my last fight that when I am healthy, I can beat anyone and am one of the top heavyweights in the world.

“I leave those decisions to my team, but I did win a WBA eliminator against Kownacki, so that should probably be the next one.

The Finnish contender inflicted a punishing beating on Kownacki on the Fury vs Wilder 3 bill

“It’s been my dream to win a world title. At this point, I am so motivated I don’t feel anyone can beat me.

“Usyk or Fury, bring them both.”

Helenius twice defeated Kownacki on high-profile bills in America to boost his reputation, but he is willing to return to Europe for a world title shot.

“Usyk and Fury present different challenges and I would likely, and gladly, face either in their home countries,” said Helenius.

“But as I’ve showed in my last two bouts, travel is no problem for me. Honestly, Europe is probably more convenient than the US for me.

Fury is the king of the heavyweight division?

“It would be so huge here in Finland. I am happy that I’ve got back to a position where many people thought I would never be.

“One thing I can tell you, I will become heavyweight champion of the world for my family, my country, and for myself.”

Morgan’s lean run continues as KKR lose thriller to Kings

Punjab move level on points with Kolkata in play-off chase after thrilling last-over win in Dubai; Kings triumph with three balls to spare in game including contentious non-catch and sparkling innings from Knight Riders’ Venkatesh Iyer; watch IPL double header on Sky Sports on Saturday

Last Updated: 01/10/21 7:49pm

Eoin Morgan has scored just 17 runs in four innings for Kolkata Knight Riders since the IPL resumed in the UAE

Eoin Morgan’s lean run of form continued as Kolkata Knight Riders lost a thriller to Punjab Kings and the IPL play-off race was blown wide open.

The England white-ball captain’s second-ball lbw dismissal to Mohammed Shami means he has scored just 17 runs in four innings since the IPL resumed in the United Arab Emirates in September.

Kolkata skipper Morgan is averaging below 11 across the tournament as a whole, while he scored only 49 runs in four innings for England in T20 internationals against Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the home summer.

Morgan’s form is in stark contrast to Punjab captain and Orange Cap holder KL Rahul, whose 67 from 55 deliveries helped his side reach their target of 166 against KKR with three balls to spare.

Punjab’s five-wicket win has moved up to fifth in the table, level on points with their fourth-placed opponents as well as sixth-placed Mumbai Indians.

Sides play 14 group games in the IPL with the top four teams reaching the play-offs

Rahul was caught off the second ball of the final over with four runs still required, having been reprieved on 62 in the previous over when the TV umpire adjudged that the ball had hit the ground as Rahul Tripathi ran in from deep midwicket to take a catch.

However, Shahrukh Khan struck the winning six the delivery after Rahul was dismissed as Tripathi dropped the ball over the rope at wide long-on.

Venkatesh Iyer was the unlucky bowler, having earlier top-scored for Kolkata with 67 off 49 deliveries as he carded his second half-century in just his fifth IPL innings.

The opener played a number of pleasing strokes, from slog sweeps to ramps to cover drives to flowing strokes through the on-side, before he was caught at deep midwicket off Kings leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2-22).

Tripathi (34 off 26) and Nitish Rana (31 off 18) also fired but KKR were limited to 44 runs from the final five overs and just 14 from the last two as Shami (1-23) and Arshdeep Singh (3-32) closed out the innings in style.

Kings – shorn of Chris Gayle with the West Indian having left the IPL in order to “mentally recharge and refresh” ahead of the T20 World Cup – were given an early boost in the chase when Morgan dropped Mayank Agarwal on nought at cover.

Agarwal went on 40 score from 27 deliveries in an opening-wicket stand of 70 with Rahul before cracking to Morgan at cover once again – the fielder clinging on this time.

Kolkata continued to chip away with wickets but Rahul’s 26th IPL fifty and fifth of the campaign kept Kings on course.

When he was eventually dismissed – five balls after he benefitted from that contentious non-catch – Shahrukh (22no off 9) ended his enterprising cameo by clinching victory as the ball burst Tripathi’s hands in the deep.

There is an IPL double header live on Sky Sports Cricket on Saturday. Watch Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals from 10.50am and then Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings from 2.50pm.

Elvis Presley’s ex Linda Thompson reunites with King’s stepbrother at old Las Vegas Hilton

Elvis Presley’s ex-girlfriend Linda Thompson has revisited Las Vegas where she spent many months with The King during his residences there in the early 1970s. Elvis dated the former Miss Tennessee model from 1972-1976 and they lived together at Graceland. During her recent trip to Las Vegas, the 71-year-old paid tribute to Elvis by visiting the old Hilton hotel, originally called The International and now Westgate, where The King performed two shows a night.

Linda even met up with Elvis’ step-brother David Stanley, who was the son of Vernon Presley’s second wife Dee Stanley.

Having stayed at The Palazzo Las Vegas at The Venetian resort, the 71-year-old shared photos from her “nostalgic” trip down memory lane.

She wrote on Instagram: “What a great few days & nights in Vegas! I love @palazzovegas where I usually stay.

“It was so nostalgic getting to revisit the city where I lived for 9 months of the 4 1/2 years Elvis & I were together!”

Linda added: “I had a lovely lunch & sweet visit with Elvis’s stepbrother David Stanley at the old Hilton international which is now the Westgate.”

The King’s former girlfriend also spoke of watching Bruno Mars perform and compared him to Elvis.

She wrote: “’Ima leave the door open’ for more 24 karat magic after seeing Bruno Mars in concert! What an astonishing performer!

“He is an amalgamation of Prince, James Brown, Elvis & Michael Jackson – yet uniquely his own style & magic!”

On revising Graceland, Linda wrote on her Instagram: “I took a walk down memory lane today at my former home, where I lived for 4 1/2 years – Graceland in Memphis.

“I also revisited the airplanes that I flew on to countless concerts all around the country with the greatest entertainer who ever lived, Elvis Presley.

“It’s surreal to remember decorating with him the legendary jungle room, stained glass peacocks in the living/music room, the fabric covered pool room, TV room & other areas – as well as the Lisa Marie airplane.

“I will always be grateful for the rarified honour of having been so close on such a deeply personal level to such a true icon – and for having been loved by him.”

Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3 in doubt after Covid outbreak in Gypsy King’s camp

Wilder, on the other hand, has been vocal in the build-up, and has already declared he believes Fury will cheat in order to retain the WBC strap.

The Bronze Bomber has frequently claimed Fury tampered with his gloves in their second fight, and has declared the fight was stopped prematurely, as well as claiming his ring walk attire was too heavy, causing him to be unable to move properly.

Now, he has claimed Fury’s team is preparing a “master plan” to cheat and gain an illegal advantage.

He said this week: “You think he ain’t gonna try to cheat this time? Oh they’re thinking of it, they’re coming up with a master plan.

Elvis Presley granddaughter: ‘There’s a lot of emotion around listening to King’s music’

Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977. The singer, who was just 42-years-old at the time, died of a cardiac arrest in his home at Graceland. He left behind a fiancée, Ginger Alden, a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley and his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. Lisa Marie’s daughter, Riley Keough, never met her grandfather, but his legacy has no doubt followed her throughout her life. Sometimes, she revealed, this was a tragic thing.

Riley recently appeared on the Just For Variety podcast where she was asked if she listens to Elvis’ music.

She replied: “I don’t put it on. If it’s on, I’ll listen to it.”

Riley then opened up about her family’s relationship with Elvis’ music.

She said: “There’s definitely emotion around it. There was definitely a lot of grief around it growing up, especially seeing my mom and my grandma.

“There was a sad thing, tragic kind of a thing… so there was definitely that relationship to it.”

Riley added: “I could see from a young age that it would make my mom sad. And so I could feel that.”

Whether or not she chooses to listen to Elvis’ music, she confessed it is tough when she hears it.

She said: “It’s definitely an emotional experience, especially if it’s one of the more emotional songs.

“The more gospel stuff, definitely, makes me emotional. But I will listen to it if it’s on, I just don’t go putting it on.”

Riley’s next film, Daisy Jones and the Six, will see her singing.

But is she like Elvis when she sings? “I am not.

“My voice is not like Elvis but I’ll tell you what, I just recently learned that I do have kind of a country voice. I realised that the other day in the studio.

“I have a weird voice… but it’s fun and I love it and I am always interested in trying things.”

Riley added: “I have a weird thing where I don’t care if I fail at things, and that has been really helpful in this process.”

On top of having Elvis as her grandfather, Riley’s step-father was Michael Jackson for a period.

Discussing this, she said: “People always ask: ‘How crazy is it that your grandpa was Elvis and your stepdad was Michael Jackson?’ I make them happy and say: ‘Yeah, it’s soooo crazy!’”

Michael was married to Lisa Marie Presley from 1994 to 1996.
