Dramatic moment Trevor Phillips cuts off interview on TV to break news on Queen health

Sky News host Trevor Phillips cut off Commonwealth Secretary-General to break the news that the Queen will miss today’s Remembrance Sunday service.  In a dramatic televised moment, Mr Phillips was discussing COP26 with Baroness Scotland when the news broke.  He said: “Secretary-General, will you just hold that for a moment. We have some breaking news.”

The broadcast host continued: “The Queen has decided with regret she will not be attending the Remembrance Sunday ceremonies this morning.”

He then cut to royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills who added: “In the last few moments we have had a statement from the Palace confirming that Her Majesty will not be attending the cenotaph today.”

A Buckingham Palace statement read: “The Queen, having sprained her back, has decided this morning with great regret that she will not be able to attend today’s Remembrance Sunday Service at the Cenotaph.

“Her Majesty is disappointed that she will miss the service.”

It was due to be the monarch’s first public outing after being advised to rest by doctors for almost a month, following medical checks in hospital.

Ms Mills continued: “I understand the back sprain unrelated to the recent medical advice for her to rest.

“It is really unfortunate timing, but this back sprain has happened very recently.

“She regards today as one of the most significant engagements of the year.

Baroness Scotland responded to the news: “The Queen is rightly adored, she has shown total commitment to the Commonwealth and she is much loved.

“So, the opportunity to see her and pay homage for what she has done – there will be a lot of sadness but everyone will be wishing her well.

“She is the beating heart of the love in the Commonwealth.”

A wreath will be laid on Her Majesty’s behalf by the Prince of Wales, as per the tradition in recent years.

The Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and The Princess Royal will also still attend as planned.
