Ohio man’s rescue of mother and son, 10, at North Carolina beach caught on drone footage

An 18-year-old Ohio man was being praised for saving a mother and her 10-year-old son at a North Carolina beach over the Fourth of July weekend – in a rescue that was caught on video.

Travis Shrout of Stow, near Cleveland, said he had swum out pretty far at Topsail Beach where his family was vacationing on July 3 when he noticed the woman and her son struggling in the water, FOX 8 of Cleveland reported.

Shrout’s family had gotten out of the water but family friend Thad Unkefer wanted to test his drone’s tracking features, so Shrout decided to get back in, he told the station.

Unkefer posted the video on YouTube after the rescue.

“I thought I heard ‘Help!’ but it was such a weird situation. I said, ‘Are you alright?’ and she said, ‘No,'” Shrout told the Akron Beacon Journal about spotting the mother and her son. “I immediately started swimming out to her.”

He told FOX 8 when he first started talking to the mother her son was right next to her but “by the time I got to her, he was sucked out probably 15 feet. It’s just crazy how fast that current was moving.”

He said his YMCA lifeguard training kicked in and he gave the mother the bodyboard he had been using while he went to get her son. No lifeguards were on the beach at the time, he said.

“I just started swimming as fast as I could out to the 10-year-old boy,” he told FOX 8. “He was going up and down in the water. He had probably gone down about four or five times.”

Shrout told the boy to lean back while he got underneath and held up the boy’s body. Shrout quickly brought the boy back to his mother and the bodyboard.

“There was a couple of waves that came over our heads and I didn’t know how many more of those waves were gonna come,” he told FOX 8. “They completely submerged all of us. So, that was kind of scary.”

At one point, he told them they should just hold onto the bodyboard and float because they didn’t seem to be getting much closer to shore. “We’re not in any immediate danger anymore. You know, we can get in,” Shrout said he told the pair.

When they got closer to shore another man, Andrew Leonard, brought out a second bodyboard and helped pull them in, the Beacon Journal reported.

“I was exhausted that last couple of meters in that push,” Shrout told FOX 8. “I don’t think I would have been able to bring them out without that.”

He said he had already been swimming for one to two hours before the rescue.

“I was watching him, and I stood up to tell him to come in because he was getting too far out and I couldn’t figure out why he was swimming out so far,” his mother, Gretia Grayson Shrout, who was watching the scene from the shore, said. “Then I saw the splashing and we realized what was going on. Your instinct as a mom is to jump in and help your kid, but I know I’m not a strong enough swimmer to do that. I just had to watch. It was a completely helpless feeling.”

She told the Beacon Journal the rescued mother immediately gave Shrout a hug when they were on the shore. “She was crying and she said, ‘God put Travis there to save us because we were dying.’”

Shrout is expected to receive a proclamation from the Stow, Ohio, city council at the end of the month.

Amy Winehouse’s mother speaks out on biopics of her life: ‘There was so much more’

It’s been a decade since Amy Winehouse’s untimely death, after the incredibly talented performer passed away from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. In the years that followed, there were many adaptations of her life on-screen but now her mother Janis Winehouse-Collins, is challenging the cautionary tale about her daughter.

In 2015, Asif Kapadia directed an award-winning documentary about the life and death of British singer-songwriter, which used previously unseen archive footage and personal testimonies of dazzled fans and people who worked with her.

The film Amy, won a total of 30 awards – including an Oscar for Best Documentary – but the singer’s father Mitchell complained that it was unbalanced and “tainted” at the time.

Now Janis too, has criticised the ground-breaking motion picture.

In a new interview, she spoke out about her feelings towards the film.

“You think you know my daughter,” she whispered.

“The drugs, the drink, the addiction, the destructive relationships.”

She added: “But there was so much more.”

Ahead of a new BBC2 documentary Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On, Janis – accompanied by family members and close friends of Amy – will tell “a new female-driven interpretation of her life, her loves and her legacy.”

Back to present day, Janis recalled her daughter growing up and how she was a free spirit from an early age.

“I could say no and she’d do what she wanted,” Janis told Radio Times.

“But she wasn’t nasty, she loved her mum and dad and her brother, she was loyal to her friends.

“Clever with words, always writing things.”

In the new BBC doc, Amy’s friends remember intense teenage conversations about love, life and sexuality.

And despite taking her parent’s divorce out on her mum at times, Janis insisted: “She was never horrible!

“When she was smoking or swearing she would always say, ‘Sorry, Mummy.’ I just carried on, down to earth.”

Janis’ full interview is available to read now in Radio Times.

NEW JERSEY (KDKA) — A 24-year-old woman who police say had been kidnapped along with her 2-year-old son this weekend was found dead off the side of a highway in Tennessee.

An Amber Alert had been issued in multiple states, including Pennsylvania, for 2-year-old Sebastian Rios and his mother, Yasmine Uyar, on Friday after they were allegedly abducted by the boy’s father, 27-year-old Tyler Rios.

State police announced Saturday that the alert was called off after they found Sebastian was safe in Monterey, Tennessee.

Police arrested Tyler Rios shortly thereafter.

But the mother had been still been missing early on Saturday, and her body was later recovered in a wooded area off of I-40.

Tyler Rios is facing charges of first-degree kidnapping, and officials say additional charges are to follow in connection to the death of Uyar.

Police began looking into Sebastian Rios’ and Uyar’s whereabouts after he did not arrive to daycare and she did not show up to her usual work shift, Union County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady says.

From there, police stopped by to make a welfare check at Uyar’s home Friday morning but found no one inside, prompting the Amber Alert to be issued.

Tyler Rios will be extradited back to New Jersey.

Mother and daughter killed, officers shoot live-in boyfriend at West Houston apartment

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A mother and daughter were shot to death Sunday morning at a west Houston apartment complex, and the man believed to be responsible was wounded by officers, according to Houston police.

It happened around 9:15 a.m. in the 1000 block of East Tri Oaks Lane near the Katy Freeway feeder road.

Officers were responding to a call about an assault in progress when they saw a woman arrive and knock on the apartment door, according to Houston assistant police chief Yasar Bashir. She was shot point-blank when the door opened before the gunman began firing at police, Bashir said.

Officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times before he retreated inside the apartment where he remained for some time before voluntarily giving up.

He was taken into custody and transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he was stable.

The woman died at the scene.

SWAT officers found the body of another shooting victim during a sweep of the apartment, according to Bashir.

The victim inside the home, described as a woman in her 30s, was the accused shooter’s live-in girlfriend, Bashir said. The woman who was shot outside, believed to be in her 60s, was the woman’s mother, Bashir said.

It wasn’t immediately clear when the woman found inside the apartment was shot.

No officers were hurt during the incident, but their police cruiser was damaged by the gunfire.

Initial reports that the incident was a home invasion call were inaccurate, police said.

Samuel Olson's mother speaks for first time since 5-year-old boy was found dead

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The mother of 5-year-old Samuel Olson spoke out Tuesday for the first time since her son’s body was found in a motel room in Jasper, Texas, and said his father shares some responsibility.

“I don’t see how he couldn’t, with all the evidence that has now been brought to light, how are you not involved?” Sarah Olson said when asked whether Sam’s father, Dalton Olson, was to blame.

Theresa Balboa, Dalton’s former girlfriend, is charged with tampering with evidence, in particular a human corpse, in connection with Sam’s death. Houston police believe she hid and moved the boy’s body. Investigators have said more charges could come.

“He was sweet. He was very obedient. He was definitely a momma’s boy,” Sarah said during a news conference at her attorney’s office on Tuesday. “I always loved when he called me beautiful.”

Sarah started with a moment of silence and a prayer for her son. She stood next to Sam’s favorite toys and pictures from home.

Sarah said Dalton took Sam in January of 2020 and never gave him back. The last time she saw him was for his 5th birthday in May of last year.

“When I got there, he told me, ‘I knew you would come,” she said. “And he basically stood with me the whole time. I was planning on taking him home that day. I was stopped.”

Sarah said she tried to work through the custody issues legally but described the court system as “slow.” Her attorney said Dalton, who did not respond to ABC13’s request for comment, avoided being served papers for months.
Balboa is being held on a $ 500,000 bond for the tampering charge, in addition to a $ 100,000 bond for an assault with intent – impeding breath charge from November 2020.

Prior to the investigation into Sam’s death, she was out on bond for the assault charge. The complainant in that case was Dalton.

Prosecutors requested a higher bond saying Balboa was a flight risk.

An autopsy identified the child found dead in Jasper as Samuel. The little boy died by homicidal violence, officials determined. The cause of death was blunt head trauma.
Investigators said Balboa was in the motel room where the boy’s body was found.

Sarah said Sam’s body remains at a funeral home. She wishes to have him cremated and has not made a decision about whether there will be a public memorial.

Sarah previously spoke through her attorney about the charges against Balboa, whom she met only once.

“Theresa is in custody, but she also strongly believes that the adults, you know, the child’s father, should also be in custody, because she feels 100% that they both have something to do with this,” attorney Marco Gonzalez said. “So, she’s hoping, you know, praying that he also will be taken into custody. So that justice can be done for Samuel.”

Horror as Israeli airstrikes kill 'girl, 2, her pregnant mother and disabled father'

Gaza’s health ministry said on Wednesday some of the latest strikes resulted in the death of a two-year-old, her pregnant mother and disabled father. As the strikes continue, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said he would not “rule out” using extreme measures against militant groups in the Gaza Strip.
At a summit of ambassadors in Tel Aviv earlier on Wednesday, Mr Netanyahu said: “There are only two ways that you can deal with [Hamas]. You can either conquer them – and that’s always an open possibility – or you can deter them.

“And we are engaged right now in forceful deterrence, but I have to say we don’t rule out anything.”

Hours after the comment, US President Joe Biden, called Mr Netanyahu and said that “he expected a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire.”

Gaza’s health ministry has so far reported that 64 children have been killed in the conflict and over 1,600 have been injured.

It is also estimated that around 58,000 Palestinians have fled from their homes in a bid to escape the ongoing conflict.

The health ministry also warned that relief shelters for families displaced by the bombings are becoming overcrowded and are now a “dangerous environment for the rapid spread of Covid-19.”

They added that “direct targeting” of the ministry’s health facilities has stopped laboratory services for a second day, resulting in the suspension of Covid testing and pregnancy services.

In order to save the health crisis, the ministry is urging “all friends of human rights – whether governments or charitable and humanitarian institutions” – to provide aid to Gaza.

Andrea Bocelli sings tribute song to mother Edi who rejected doctors’ advice to abort him

Bocelli continued in his tribute to his mother: “She who, through divine grace, lives the generous mystery of birth, the sacred plan of giving shape and consciousness to clay.

“She, force and breath of the world, the most powerful messenger of Heaven, who teaches us what love is and what it is like.

“I’m thinking of my mother and affectionately of all mothers, of their unbreakable strength.

“I thank each of them and celebrate the natural setting where motherhood thrives: the family, where we learn and teach the young to choose the path of good. Celebrating Mother’s Day means celebrating life: today especially, but not only today, because mothers deserve it every day of the year. Andrea.”
