Biden administration caving in by waiving sanctions on Nord Stream 2

Washington has declined to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2 AG, a Swiss-based subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom that’s in charge of the construction of a natural gas pipeline from Russia to Germany.

According to the US State Department, penalties against the company and its CEO, Matthias Warnig, would have a negative impact on US relations with Germany, the EU, and other European allies and partners. However, the White House has blacklisted four ships and four entities involved in the project.

RT’s Boom Bust talked to Professor Richard Wolff, host of the radio/TV show and podcast ‘Economic Update’, to get a detailed analysis on the controversial decision.

“I think this is face-saving fakery, to be blunt and honest. By punishing or saying you’re going to punish a few Russian ships, you can appear to be a very tough guy, in a way that President Trump was and that many want Mr. Biden to be,” he opined.

According to Wolff, the current administration has caved in by not sanctioning the company that is in charge of the entire project.

Europe’s support for Nord Stream 2 shows that US pressure isn’t working anymore – Professor Wolff to RT’s Boom Bust

Germany and other European countries, which invested billions of dollars in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to get cheaper Russian gas, still support the project despite mounting US pressure and threats of sanctions.

RT’s Boom Bust spoke to author and host of the Economic Update, Professor Richard Wolff, to discuss the situation. He says Nord Stream 2 was spared from the latest round of sanctions on Russia because the US was afraid to offend the Europeans, who already refused to cave in to the pressure from the previous administration of Donald Trump.

“They are not receptive to the kinds of pressure tactics of the past, where they used to fold the minute the American president said something. Those days, I think, are over and we’re seeing it around the Nord Stream pipeline,” Wolff said.

He also noted that the actions of the US are only pushing Russia and China closer, with both countries becoming more self-sufficient. This puts the US in a difficult position, according to Wolff, as the two states are working together to lure third world countries away from American influence.

Gas supplies via Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline may start this summer – State Duma

Russia may complete construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline already in summer, said Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy Pavel Zavalny. The pipeline aims to boost gas supplies to Germany and other European states.

“We hope very much that both construction and gas supply adjustment will be completed by the end of the summer, and that Germany will obtain the first batch of gas through this pipeline,” he said on Thursday during a meeting of Duma members with their colleagues from the Bundestag.

Zavalny added that the pipeline’s construction is speeding up, as Russia’s Akademik Cherskiy pipelaying vessel has joined the effort. “Hopefully, the second string, as well as the first string, will be laid no later than June, if foreign military ships do not interfere. We have already witnessed such precedents,” he said.

Last month, Gazprom Chairman Viktor Zubkov said that despite a series of delays caused by US sanctions, construction of the gas pipeline will be ‘unequivocally’ completed before the end of the year.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was designed to boost Russian gas supplies to Germany and other European countries by 55 billion cubic meters per year. It will connect Germany directly to Russia via the Baltic Sea. The pipeline is aimed at protecting Berlin’s energy security and also lowering the price by making the process less reliant on third countries transiting gas.

The US has been relentlessly seeking to block the completion of the pipeline, while imposing numerous packages of sanctions against companies involved in its construction, maintenance, insurance and certification, leading some to pull out altogether. Russia thus had to dispatch its own vessels to lay the final kilometers of the route.

Washington has repeatedly urged Europe to buy more US liquefied natural gas instead, claiming that the project will “undermine Europe’s overall energy security and stability.”

However, some have accused the Americans of opposing the pipeline for economic reasons, as the country looks to increase its exports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to the continent.

Why does US need a special envoy for Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline? Boom Bust digs in

The White House is in talks to appoint a special envoy to lead negotiations on halting the construction of Russia-to-Germany gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, Politico reported this week, citing current and former US officials.

According to the report, Amos Hochstein, who served as the special envoy and coordinator for international energy affairs under President Barack Obama and was a close adviser and confidant to then-Vice President Joe Biden, was informally offered the role by National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan late last month and is being vetted, the officials said.

RT’s Boom Bust looks at the details.
