Some Virgin Media customers offered new way to get better broadband speeds

Thousands of Virgin Media customers could soon be treated to the ultimate Gigabit broadband. This blisteringly quick technology is around 18 times faster than the UK average and allows those using it to download a full HD movie in just 40 seconds. With more of us than ever now using the web to work from home and watch endless boxsets, having faster speeds is becoming vital.

Despite recent announcements that the UK’s broadband is set for record investment, large swathes of the country are still struggling with their downloads but Virgin is hoping a new incentive can help. The telecoms firm says it is now allowing some consumers to make use of the Government’s Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

If you weren’t aware, these Vouchers are worth up to £1,500 for homes and £3,500 for businesses and help to cover the costs of installing gigabit-capable broadband.

If a whole street joins forces and applies for the money it can mean homes get better speeds more quickly than if they waited for the standard fibre rollout to arrive in their area.

As an initial trial, Virgin Media says it is inviting residents in West Sussex to register their interest so that Gigabit Broadband Vouchers can be used, alongside private investment from the company, to help connect them to some of the nation’s fastest broadband speeds of up to 1.1Gbps.

The average broadband speed in the area is 43.8Mbps but many premises experience much slower connections. At that rate it would take around 13 minutes to download a blockbuster movie or almost there hours for a PS5 title to arrive on the console.

Speaking about the news Rob Evans, Managing Director, Fixed Network Expansion at Virgin Media O2, said: “We’re spearheading the UK’s broadband charge with the nation’s largest gigabit network that is expanding to new areas each day.

“Our mission is to upgrade the UK and this voucher scheme, combined with our continued private investment, will help to bring the benefits of next-generation digital infrastructure to harder-to-reach areas. We urge residents in West Sussex to get involved and register their interest so that Virgin Media O2 can bring gigabit connectivity to West Sussex communities as quickly as possible.”

And Digital Infrastructure Minister, Matt Warman, added: “Our broadband voucher scheme is energising broadband firms to deliver ultra high-speed connections to the most hard-to-reach parts and I’m delighted to hear Virgin Media O2 has joined us and launched its first scheme in West Sussex.”

Virgin Media, who recently joined forces with O2, is making big promises about the future of its broadband.

The new joint company says it will bring gigabit connectivity to its entire network – covering more than 15 million homes and businesses – by the end of 2021, helping to deliver nearly two-thirds of the Government’s 2025 broadband target four years early.

The company has also committed to investing at least £10bn over the next 5 years in the UK.

This news from Virgin comes as BT’s Openreach has also announced big investment in its infrastructure with the company saying it is bringing ultra-reliable FTTP broadband to 551 more towns and cities with 43,000 premises getting the upgrade every single week.

Taxpayer outrage as pregnant people could be offered £400 by NHS to quit smoking 'Garbage'

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) and Public Health England said studies found “voucher incentives were acceptable to many pregnant women and healthcare providers”.

Dr Paul Chrisp, director of Nice’s centre for guidelines, said: “These draft guideline recommendations are a renewed effort to reduce the health burden of smoking and to encourage and support people to give up smoking.

“Smoking continues to take a huge toll on the health of the nation and accounts for approximately half the difference in life expectancy between the richest and poorest in society.

“It is therefore vitally important that we reduce the level of smoking in this country.

“We know that around 10 percent of women are known to be smokers at the time of giving birth and, given the significant health effects of smoking on both mothers and babies, it is clear that further efforts are required to encourage this group to give up smoking.

“We need to use every tool in our arsenal to reduce smoking rates, including education, behavioural support, financial incentives, and e-cigarettes if people are interested in using them.

“Combined, we hope that people who smoke will feel enabled to give up tobacco products once and for all.”

Britons chimed in on Twitter to discuss the potential policy, most unsupportive.

One wrote: “If pregnant women won’t quit smoking for the sake of their baby but will do it for £400 then I’m really concerned about them as mothers tbh since it isn’t a good sign about priorities.

“Why not give £400 to expectant mothers who aren’t poisoning their children instead?”

“You give up smoking for yourself for it to be successful in the longer term. It may help a small proportion who want to give up,” one said.

Another questioned, “They could quite easily start smoking again after having their baby?”

Another said: “Why are taxpayers rewarding those that could stop but don’t because they’re selfish? Better idea, if their child is born with any issues, they are charged, prosecuted and punished for not safeguarding their child.”

“If they can’t stop smoking with an unborn child inside them I very much doubt £400 will do the job. Do people actually get paid for coming up with this garbage,” another said.

Lewis Hamilton fans offered more British GP hope after 'positive' government talks

Despite the UK Government delaying the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in the UK, Silverstone circuit say they remain ‘confident’ fans will be allowed to attend – with discussions continuing behind closed doors amid the possibility of a capacity crowd for the British Grand Prix.

It had been hoped that, in line with Government guidelines, Silverstone would be able to have the race take place in front of a full crowd, with Boris Johnson lifting restrictions from June 21.

However, on Monday it was announced these plans were to be delayed by four weeks as the UK had not met the requirements put in place to ease the restrictions.

Under the current rules, events outdoors are limited to 10,000 people or 25 percent of a venue’s capacity.

However, the British Grand Prix is to be part of the Event Research Programme, which, alongside various other events like music concerts, Euro 2020 football championship, and Wimbledon, will examine the risk of catching COVID-19 from attending the events.

In a message on their website, Silverstone said: “Following today’s announcement confirming that the easing of lockdown restrictions will be delayed by four weeks, we’d like to reassure you that we remain confident fans will be back at Silverstone for the 2021 Formula 1 British Grand Prix in July.”

“Our ongoing discussions with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, as well as Public Health England, are positive,” the track said.

“We will communicate the full details with you once we have them.”

But, according to Telegraph Sport, talks have started regarding the possibility of running the event at full capacity, if Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces a delay to ‘freedom day’ until July 19.

Vaccine milestone! Jab offered to ALL Brits within weeks amid surging Delta variant fears

Dominic Harrison, director of public health in Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire, has warned of an “exceptionally high rate” among 17 and 18-year-olds – and urged ministers to license jabs for teenagers to help protect the wider community.

He told BBC Radio 4’s World At One: “We desperately need the UK Government, the MHRA [Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency] to pass the Pfizer vaccine as safe and effective for that age group.

“Now the USA, Canada, Singapore and the European Union have all in the last week said that’s Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is safe and effective for 12 years and above and I just hope the UK Government can get on with passing that, assuming that they agree that we could then get into rapid vaccination for that cohort, before the end of term.

“Because that would help not just with protecting the whole population through an increased number of people vaccinated, but reducing transmission in that group.”

Floyd Mayweather offered Khabib Nurmagomedov £71m bout before Logan Paul deal

Floyd Mayweather is all set to share the boxing ring with an 0-1 YouTuber in his next bout, but if things had panned out differently, it could have been a 29-0 UFC legend.

That’s because Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has revealed that the retired Russian MMA superstar and former undisputed UFC lightweight champion was offered a colossal payday to end his combat sports retirement and take on Mayweather in an exhibition bout.

Speaking on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast, Abdelaziz explained that Khabib was a man in demand from the moment he announced his retirement from MMA.

UFC president Dana White made no secret of his desire to try to persuade “The Eagle” out of retirement and continue his career in the octagon.

But there were options outside of MMA, too, with Abdelaziz explaining that Mayweather’s team had made the Russian star a blockbuster offer to box him that, had Khabib accepted, would almost certainly have happened instead of Mayweather’s upcoming bout with Logan Paul which takes place at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on June 6.

“Khabib got offered $ 100million (£71m) after he was retired to fight Floyd Mayweather. $ 100 million. You can ask Floyd, you can ask everybody,” he said.

“Khabib said, ‘no, I’m retired, I told my mother I’m retired, I’m gonna keep my word to my mother. If my mother told me to fight again maybe I will. But, right now, she told me not to fight’.

“He comes from a Muslim culture, we respect our mothers very dearly, we can’t go to heaven without our mother’s permission.”

Abdelaziz also weighed in on Khabib’s longtime rival, Conor McGregor, as he predicted the Irish star’s demise at the hands of Dustin Poirier in their upcoming trilogy fight at UFC 264.

“Now you have McGregor fighting Dustin Poirier, probably McGregor’s going to quit again, he’s a quitter,” Abdelaziz stated.

“To me, he’s irrelevant. He’s like a high-end prostitute. Now people want to go out on a date with him, to show, ‘hey, I have a pretty girl with me.’

“He’s the pretty girl, and after that you can go show the other girls and say, ‘hey, I got this beautiful girl, you wanna date me?’

“That means fighters, they fight him, they get this clout fighting Conor McGregor. But they don’t understand Conor McGregor hasn’t won in three years. He’s a high-price hooker.”

Abdelaziz said that, while he believes McGregor’s time at the very top level of combat sport is now over, the Irishman will still secure bumper paydays.

But rather than facing world champion MMA fighters, Khabib’s manager said McGregor will have to dive into the emerging world of celebrity boxing to continue making his fortune.

“You make money when you fight Conor McGregor, because he’s a draw. But how long is that going to last for?” he asked.

“Him and Dustin Poirier, I like Dustin, but both looked like s*** (in their rematch).

“The McGregor thing is finished. McGregor now is going to be fighting Jake Paul, the Kardashians, he’s gonna fight chicks. That’s what’s going on.”

More Samsung TV owners offered a swathe of free content and that's not all

Samsung is offering even more of its TV customers the chance to tune into content without having to pay any expensive subscription fees. The firm’s popular TV Plus service – which brings access to channels such as CNN, SuperToons TV, Action Movies, Rakuten TV and the Comedy Channel – is now launching in a number of new regions across the world including India, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland and Portugal.
These areas now join the UK, US, Australia, Brazil and Mexico who have already been given access to the streaming app which can be found on almost all new Samsung TVs.

If you weren’t already aware, Samsung’s TV Plus gives you instant access to top news, sports, entertainment, and more. In fact, there are over 80 channels available and the best part is that it’s totally free and doesn’t require any downloads, sign-up, credit cards, subscriptions or additional devices.

Samsung TV Plus has become one of the fastest-growing streaming services in the world following its debut in 2015 and that’s probably not hard to dispute considering the amount of content that’s available without reaching for your wallet.

It’s also getting regular updates aimed at improving the experience with the most recent change including a simplified player bar for more intuitive controls.

Some more big news about Samsung TV Plus is that the new phone app is now coming to more places including the U.K., Canada, Germany and India. The Samsung TV Plus mobile app first launched in the US late last year and offers select Galaxy users access to the shows and content they love for free.

Samsung says that Galaxy users who own a smartphone from the Galaxy Note20, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note10 or Galaxy S10 series will be able to enjoy the app this April.

“The growth of Samsung TV Plus has everything to do with the quality of the content, the ease of access and the multi-screen experiences offered,” said Sang Kim, SVP of Product & Marketing for Samsung Electronics. “We are working hard to deliver more to our customers wherever they are – including our mobile offering.”

Earlier this year Samsung TV Plus got a big boost with the launch of the new Vevo music channel. This playlist-packed station arrived in the UK back in February and offers 24-hour access to music videos at no cost.

Explaining more, Kevin McGurn, president of sales and distribution, Vevo said: “In the US, we partnered with Samsung TV Plus during the early days of our OTT expansion. Today, they are one of our top-performing television experiences, with tens of millions of viewers across Vevo channels daily. We are excited to build on this success and do the same in the UK and Europe, but with more localized curation.”
