Princess Diana statue outfit represents her ‘confidence in final years’ -style in pictures

Princess Diana statue outfit represents her 'confidence in final years' -style in pictures

Today marks what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday, with tributes being paid around the world to the late Princess. The Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex have unveiled a statue to honour their late mother at the Sunken Garden, in Kensington Palace.

However, during her last years when she was very involved with charity projects, her new looks became more casual and she opted for more low cut dresses.

For Diana’s statue, this has been indeed the chosen style, in order to represent the final period of her life.

In the bronze statue, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, we see Princess Diana in a midi dress featuring long sleeves and a belt.

“The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion,” an official statement said.

Diana is shown standing alongside three children chosen to represent the “universality and generational impact” of her work.

Kensington Palace explained that it aims to “reflect the warmth, elegance and energy of Diana”.

While Diana was known for wearing elegant outfits during the 80s and 90s, designer Rank-Broadley opted for something more classic for the statue.

And that is because, during her last years, which is the period the designer chose to recreate, the Princess used to wear smart-casual outfits.

In a joint tribute, the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex said: “Today, on what would have been our mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.

“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.

“Thank you to Ian Rank-Broadley, Pip Morrison and their teams for their outstanding work, to the friends and donors who helped make this happen, and to all those around the world who keep our mother’s memory alive.”

Princess Diana pictured in outfit that ‘inspired statue’ ‒ royal fans convinced

Princess Diana pictured in outfit that 'inspired statue' ‒ royal fans convinced

Earlier this afternoon, Prince Harry and Prince William unveiled a sculpture of their late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The pair put their differences aside at Sunken Garden, in Kensington Palace, to honour Diana on the day she would have turned 60. Throughout her life, the princess was considered a style icon for many and still continues to inspire fashion today.

In the bronze statue, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, Diana can be seen in a midi dress featuring long sleeves and a belt.

An official statement said: “The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion.”

And royal fans think they have found the exact outfit, from a Christmas card in 1993 which features her in between her two sons.

It shows Diana, who donned a casual blue unbuttoned blouse and a large rectangle belt buckle, looking lovingly towards William as Harry gazes up at her.

Sharing the snap on Twitter, one royal fan said: “The statue’s outfit reminds me of Princess Diana’s card for Christmas 1993.”

And others agreed.

One noted: “I think this is exactly it.”

And another added: “I was wondering where he got the idea for that huge buckle.”

But others did point out that her hairstyle appeared to be “slightly later” than what is seen in the new statue.

The 1993 Christmas card marked the first time Prince Charles and Princess Diana each sent out their own festive greetings after they separated in 1992.

It also shows William and Harry wearing matching pale-blue shirts with black vee-neck jumpers.

The style of Diana’s dress in the statue is reminiscent of a number of ensembles worn by the royal later in her life.

After her divorce from Charles, she went on to develop more individuality with her fashion choices.

It came as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes.

In one photograph from their summer holiday in Majorca in July 1988, Diana, with William and Harry, can be seen on the steps of the Marivent Palace donning a flatting red pencil skirt and three-quarter length white blouse.

On another occasion, during a trip to Egypt in 1992, the royal opted for a pale-blue pleated skirt featuring the same thick pleated belt.

And a third example, from the same trip, shows her wearing a lemon-coloured skirt and blouse as she walked with a boy she met on a visit to Cairo.

The statue was commissioned by William and Harry in 2017 in memory of their mother and to mark the 20th anniversary of her death.

The brothers wanted the statue to recognise her positive impact around the world, and help future generations understand the significance of her place in history.

In the new figure, Diana is surrounded by three children who represent the impact of the Princess’ work.

Beneath the statue is a plinth engraved with the Princess’ name and the date of the unveiling.

Princess Anne ‘stylish’ but ‘classic’ in navy blue embroidered outfit for Royal Ascot 2021

Princess Anne ‘stylish’ but ‘classic’ in navy blue embroidered outfit for Royal Ascot 2021

Princess Anne arrived at the racecourse this afternoon to mark this year’s Royal Ascot. Members of the Royal Family turned up in cars this year rather than their usual carriages due to Queen Elizabeth II not being present for today’s event.

Royal Ascot 2021 kicked off today after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The five-day event has formed part of the second phase of the Government’s Event Research programme, with a capacity of 12,000 guests on each of the days.

Unlike usual, the royals turned up in cars this year with members including Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Zara and Mike Tindall as well as Princess Anne.

For the first day of the event, Princess Anne opted for a navy outfit.

Princess Anne added a pair of drop pearl earrings to the look, with a matching two-strand pearl necklace.

The royal often favours pearls and has added them to her looks for many events.

Her mother, Queen Elizabeth II also wears the jewellery nearly everyday, with them becoming part of her royal uniform.

The prestigious horse racing event has a very specific dress code and in line with tradition, female guests wear stunning hats or headpieces.

One person said: “Yay Princess Anne is here, she looks quite stylish.”

Another wrote: “Classic look from Princess Royal, she likes her dark colours.”

“So far I am loving the royals outfits, they don’t mess around,” said a third on Instagram.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall also arrived alongside her husband Prince Charles.

The Duchess arrived wearing a pale blue summer coat with different tones of blue striped down it.

The royal added a matching mask to the look along with a pale blue hat.

One fan said on Twitter: “Camilla looking very summery!”

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall packs specific outfit when travelling to show respect

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall packs specific outfit when travelling to show respect

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is quite a jet-setter, travelling abroad for both royal duties alongside husband Prince Charles, and for leisure purposes. However, when doing so there is one very specific outfit which she must pack in her suitcase.

Alas, this rule is one that was created from experience.

In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II was representing the monarchy in Kenya alongside Prince Philip.

Sadly, it was during this trip that she was informed of the passing of her father King George VI.

Due to the sudden nature of his death, Queen Elizabeth realised she had not even thought to pack a black ensemble for her trip to the hot country.

This meant that, upon her return to London, she would not have the correct mourning attire to wear when disembarking the aircraft.

Luckily, her staff were on hand in the UK to collect a garment for her and have it delivered to the airport in time for her landing.

Her Royal Highness stayed firmly parked onboard the aircraft until the outfit had been brought to her.

She was then able to emerge from the aeroplane in her respectful outfit.

The black garment is not the only royal fashion rule which is often imposed on family members travelling abroad for duties.

Royal Family members must also try and show respect for the countries they are visiting by donning clothing made by local designers.

“When packing looks for a state trip it is considered respectful, good etiquette and customary to shop from the designers from that country, or looks that reflect the style and culture of the destination,” Anne Chertoff chief operating officer at New York-based Beautmont Etiquette told Express.co.uk.

“For example, when Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge travelled with Prince William to India in 2016 she wore a memorable white and blue dress by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan when the couple visited the Taj Mahal.”

Underneath the 43-year-old TV host typed: “Who wore it better? #BBCBreakfast.”

In response, fans took to the comment section to give their opinion over the “weird” comparison.

A third fan penned: “Here’s the thing I find. Women gain more confidence the older they get (I’m more confident at 30 than I was at 20). A confident woman is attractive and exudes power – power over herself and her choices. Twerps don’t handle that well. You do you Julia.”

A fourth person replied: “How rude is that. My view is wear what you like, we are allowed to make choices, not be dictated to by so called style gurus.

“I have never seen you in a bad outfit and my wife always comments on what you are wearing in a very positive way.”

A fifth commented: “No, sorry, @JuliaBradbury I can’t tell you; even if I could, I should not. But then these days some folks feel a need to criticise publicly. I take comfort that you probably and rightly don’t care one iota about that tweet.”
