Prince Charles to refuse one of Philip’s dying wishes

Prince Charles will reportedly stop brother Edward becoming Duke of Edinburgh.

But the move from the Prince of Wales comes despite his dad Prince Philip’s wishes for when he died.

The Duke of Edinburgh is a title which can be passed from royal to royal.

And the former Duke of Edinburgh, who died aged 99 in April before being buried at St George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle, in front of 30 mourners, wanted his son Edward to take on the title in the event of his death.

But Charles is ready to block the move – because he wishes as future King to have a “slimmer monarchy”.

Edward mourned at the funeral alongside wife, Sophie, while Charles also attended, alongside Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

A source close to Charles said: “The Prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward.”

“It isn’t just about whether Edward becomes Duke of Edinburgh by rite of passage or not, there have been discussions about the whole top tier of the Royal Family,” a source told the Daily Mail.

A royal aide told the newspaper: “It was probably human nature to transfer your affection to the youngest, who in the scheme of things will inherit nothing. It was why he wished Edward to have his title.”

“Put yourself in his shoes,” the aide told the Mail. “You have been consort and then [Charles] comes along and is suddenly the heir.”

Gyles Brandreth unearthed Philip’s morbid take on Harry’s exit from Royal Family

Esther Rantzen grills Gyles Brandreth on Gogglebox invite

Gyles, former MP, journalist and royal author, will hit the small screen this evening as he appears on Celebrity Gogglebox with his friend, Coronation Street actor Maureen Lipman. He was part of the first series of the Channel 4 programme — where viewers watch famous figures hilariously review the latest TV — with his friend Sheila Hancock but she decided not to take part in the next instalment. Gyles was also a friend of the late Duke of Edinburgh and has often spoken out about what Philip thought of certain royal matters behind closed doors, particularly the controversy surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal exit last year.

When Prince Harry, Prince William, Prince Charles and the Queen gathered for the make-or-break Sandringham Summit last year, Philip was seen being driven away from the main estate — and it was assumed by many that he was enraged by his grandson’s decision to shirk his duties.

Indeed, Gyles alleged that the royal stalwart chose not to be a part of the complex and tense negotiations.

The Duke of Edinburgh reportedly responded to the exit talks by saying: “I’ll soon be out of it and not before time.”

This kind of retort was not unusual from the witty Prince Consort, as Philip was known for his candour and flippant approach to life — as well as his sharp tongue.

Despite living to be 99, he once told Gyles: “I can’t imagine anything worse [than turning 100].”

He also rejected “all the fuss” that came with celebrating such a birthday, and would often say that he was “on the way out” during his final years — Philip also claimed he was glad to retire at the age of 96 “while I’m still standing, just about”.

So when it came to Harry and Meghan’s difficult departure from the Royal Family last year, Philip was expected to be equally blunt with the rebellious pair.

Philip allegedly told Gyles that their attempts to secure a “half-in-half-out” role within the monarch was “naive”.

But, once the Palace stripped Harry of his royal patronages, Gyles added: “The Duke of Edinburgh was equally sorry ‘that it should come to this’.”

He pointed out how Philip had been especially delighted when Harry took on his job as the Captain General of the Royal Marines in 2017, when the Duke of Edinburgh retired from public life.

When Harry gave the role up after 30 months, Philip was reportedly “not pleased” and thought the Sussexes were not “doing the right thing either for the country or for themselves” in stepping down from the monarchy.

Philip, a man of steadfast duty, was expected to be unforgiving and furious at his grandson — however, he appreciated that Harry had to find his own way, and allegedly said: “It’s his life.”

Philip was also sympathetic to Harry’s uneasy relationship with the media, and told Gyles: “People have got to lead their lives as they think best.”

But, Harry and Meghan then confirmed they were going to be taking part in a tell-all interview with US TV star Oprah Winfrey.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Gyles explained Philip thought this was “madness” and “no good would come of it”.

Despite reports to the contrary, he was not bothered that the bombshell interview aired when he was actually in hospital for a month.

He was concerned about “the couple’s preoccupation with their own problems” instead, as they launched their series of verbal attacks on the Palace.

When the 99-year-old Prince Consort died in April, he left behind a deeply fractured Royal Family struggling to cope with the array of allegations from Harry and Meghan.

The Duke of Sussex returned to the UK for the first time since his dramatic departure last year to attend Philip’s funeral two months ago.

It was hoped that the royals would be able to reconcile through their shared grief, but the Sussexes’ relationship with the Firm has only worsened.

Harry has returned to the UK today to attend the unveiling of the Princess Diana memorial statue in Kensington Palace.

Celebrity Gogglebox is available to watch tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm, and on All 4.

Upgrading to a 4K OLED is becoming much more affordable, thanks to Philips

Philips has launched its 2021 line-up of 4K TVs. And its latest OLED TV hopes to solve one of the biggest barriers when it comes to upgrading to this superior picture technology – the price.

When it comes to Smart TVs, upgrading to OLED usually comes with a pretty substantial increase in price. While you can pick-up an LCD television with dozens of streaming apps preinstalled, a 4K resolution, support for HDR, and the ability to change channels with a voice command for under £400, you’d need to triple that budget to get close to the same features with an OLED panel.

Prices have slowly been dropping in recent years, but Philips has really sped up the process. With its 2021 line-up, Philips is offering a 55-inch OLED 4K TV for just £979. By our count, that’s comfortably one of the cheapest OLED TV launch prices we’ve ever seen. And with sales events like Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday and Boxing Day Sales all coming up in the next six months or so, things can only get better.

Philips OLED 705 also comes in a 65-inch size, but that’s a little closer to what we’ve come to expect from an OLED TV price tag, at £1,499.

OK, so which corners have been cut? You would be forgiven for assuming that Philips had scaled back the features and design of its 2021 model to reach that sub-£1,000 price. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case at all.

Under the bonnet is Philips’ P5 processor, which handles upscaling to boost any High Definition streaming or live channels to take advantage of the full 4K resolution available. That’s exactly the same quad-core chip you’ll find in pricier Philips models. The Philips OLED 705 can handle both HDR standards, Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Like Betamax and VHS, we’re not entirely sure which of these formats will become the norm going forwards (Samsung and Amazon Prime Video heavily support HDR10+, while Dolby Vision is found across Netflix, Apple TV+ and more) so having both at your disposal is ideal – and not something you’ll always find on tellies that cost twice as much as this!

Of course, there are a few compromises at this price point. Philips’ trademark Ambilight technology, which analyses whatever is happening on-screen to beam colour-matched ambient light on the wall behind the telly, is only found on three sides of Philips OLED 705. For most other sets in Philips’ 2021 line-up, Ambilight is now on all four sides – perfect for total immersion if you plan to wall-mount your set-up.

Philips OLED 705 packs a 50W sound system with 2.1 channels. There’s also compatibility for both Dolby Atmos and DTS Play-Fi.

Out of the box, it runs on the Android TV software, so you can expect to get the stylish new Google Chromecast-inspired redesign in the coming months. Android TV supports all of your favourite streaming apps, including Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Rakuten Movies, Disney+ and Apple TV.

Launched this month, Philips OLED 705 is now available from a number of retailers, including Currys PC World, AO, and Amazon to name a few.

Queen Elizabeth II met with two new ambassadors to the United Kingdom for her first day back to royal duties following two weeks of mourning her beloved husband of 73 years, Prince Philip.

Queen Elizabeth II looked so pleased to return to her work after her two-week mourning period, following the death of her husbandPrince Philip, on April 9. The British monarch, 95, was captured in a photograph that was tweeted out by the Royal Family on Tuesday, April 27. In the photo, which featured the queen meeting with two new ambassadors to the United Kingdom via video, Queen Elizabeth smiled and wore a beautiful, floral ensemble in hues of blue. You can see the photo below.

“Today The Queen held Audiences with incoming Ambassadors via video link from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace,” the caption to the photos began. Nearly the entire Royal family gathered for Prince Philip’s funeral, which was held at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. The somber moment for the family also provided an opportunity for Prince Harry to reunite with his older brother Prince William. The brothers’ relationship has been strained for months, and the Duke of Sussex, 36, openly discussed his bond with his older brother, 38, during his and wife Meghan Markle‘s joint interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

It wasn’t until after the funeral, on the occasion of her 95th birthday on April 21, that the queen shared her appreciation to those offering their condolences after her husband of 73 years passed away at the age of 99. “I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate,” she began her statement. “While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world.”

Queen Elizabeth went on to extend her gratitude “for the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”

Queen wears special Richmond Brooch from Queen Mary as she attends Prince Philip’s funeral

The Queen, who was married to the Duke of Edinburgh for more than 70 years, joined her family today in Windsor Castle for her husband’s funeral. The monarch wore a stunning brooch from her collection along with a black coat and hat.
The Queen has been forced to keep apart from relatives due to Covid restrictions but joined members of the Royal Family for Prince Philip’s funeral today.

She wore her stunning Richmond Brooch, one that was inherited from her grandmother, Queen Mary.

It is also one of the largest in her collection and has worn it several times over the years.

The brooch, made by Hunt and Roskell, was given to Mary as a wedding present in 1893 by the town of Richmond.

It was just one of the brooches that the current monarch inherited from Mary in 1953.

Although the monarch wore it sparingly in the first years of her reign, it has become a more staple piece in her brooch collection.

She also wore it to the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The Queen paired the stunning brooch with a pair of pearl earrings.

Other members of the Royal Family who attended the funeral today included Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Kate Middleton.

The Duchess of Cambridge borrowed the Queen’s jewellery for the occasion.

The pearl chocker necklace was worn by Queen Elizabeth during the 1980s and 1990s.

Kate also paired the jewellery with a pair of pearl earrings which also belonged to the Queen.

They were believed to be a wedding gift given to the Queen when she married Prince Philip in 1947.

The royal has worn several pieces of jewellery form the Queen’s collection over the years.

Prince Harry ‘Will Be Attending’ Prince Philip’s Funeral: Why Meghan Markle Won’t Go With Him

Prince Harry ‘will be following COVID protocols for travel’ to London for his grandfather Prince Philip’s funeral alone next Saturday, according to Meghan and Harry’s rep.

Prince Harry[1], 36, will be among the royal family members attending Prince Philip[2]‘s funeral[3] at St. George’s Chapel on Apr. 17 but his wife Meghan Markle[4], 39, will not be joining him, his rep confirmed to HollywoodLife. The Duke of Sussex will go solo on his trip to London because the Duchess, who is currently pregnant[5] with their second child, “did not receive medical clearance” to travel.

“I can confirm that the Duke of Sussex will be attending his grandfather’s funeral and will be following COVID-19 protocols for travel to and from the U.K. as well as during his time in the country,” the rep said. “The Duchess has made every effort to travel alongside the Duke, but unfortunately, she did not receive medical clearance from her physician.”

The news comes after Harry and Megan honored[6] the Duke of Edinburgh, who died at the age of 99[7] on Apr. 9, with a message on their official Archewell website. “In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh,” the tribute read. “Thank you for your service, you will be greatly missed.”

Harry will reportedly be leaving California, where he and Meghan have been living since last year, in the coming days, and it will be the first time he’s been in the country in over a year. It will also be the first time he’s been with his family since his and Meghan’s shocking interview with Oprah[8] aired last month.

Prince Philip’s funeral guest list will be limited to 30 people under U.K. government guidelines due to COVID, according to BBC, so it’s expected that Harry will be among the late duke’s other immediate family members, including his wife of 73 years, Queen Elizabeth II[9], 94, his children, and other grandchildren. Buckingham Palace has yet to officially confirm the service details, but the queen is expected to spend the eight days leading up to it in mourning and will not carry out any royal duties until after the service is complete.

News of Prince Philip’s passing was announced when the queen released a statement on Apr. 9. “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the statement read. “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

The duke’s passing comes after he was admitted to a London hospital, where he stayed for several days, in Feb. He then had a “successful” heart procedure and stayed in the hospital for several more days before returning to the palace.
