Royal Family LIVE: Harry and Meghan who? Kate upstages Sussexes with 'dramatic power move'

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge attended the premiere for the new James Bond movie, No Time To Die, last night alongside her husband Prince William, and his father Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. While at the much-anticipated premiere, Kate stepped out on the red carpet in a bespoke structured gold gown from Jenny Packham, which a royal expert has claimed is “unequivocally the most striking and glamorous get-up she has ever worn”, and sent royal fans into a frenzy.

Daniela Elser from Australian news corp News.com.au compared the dress to one the Duchess had worn by the same London designer to the Spectre premiere in 2015, which she described as being a “meek, shrouded and pastel frock” compared to this year’s “equivalent of a sartorial roar”.

She stated the gold glittering getup from this year “wasn’t just a dress. This was a declaration of intent and a very apparent power move on Kate’s part.”

She said: “This frock was a very audible statement, which, to channel the Goopy argot of the Sussexes’ California, about Kate stepping into, and owning, her power.”

Fans took to Twitter to share their enthusiasm for the get-up, with many declaring phrases such as “love her dress”, “wow” and “outstanding”.

User @KaylaAdams___ who describes themselves a “royal watcher and enthusiast” described the ensemble as “iconic” complete with flame emojis, while @Principessaa90 wrote “goddess in gold” and @Kezza96717823 added “Outstanding….she is the apex of class, style and sophistication, as well as beauty…. Like her mother-in-law a true Icon”.

Another user @DancingInfinit1 wrote “I can’t handle how perfect she looks”, a sentiment which seemed to echo as @Bellsimon16 wrote “Thrivin and slaying. Real royalty”.

Another user @Jay7yn channelled song lyrics by writing “Goddess on a mountain top; burning like a “golden” flame; the summit of beauty & love–and Catherine is her name. She’s got it. Yeah baby she’s got it!”

Karen’s power walking for tinnitus progress

Karen’s power walking for tinnitus progress
42-year-old Karen Christian, from Chippenham, Wiltshire has started her training for the Virgin Money London Marathon on 3 October in support of the British Tinnitus Association (BTA), a charity that is close to her heart that supports those living with tinnitus. The debilitating condition affects over 54,000 adults in Wiltshire along, and 1 in 8 people nationally.

Karen shared, “I developed tinnitus in 2017 following the death of my little brother, Squirt (Iain), and an extremely stressful 2016 at work. Since then, my tinnitus has become a barometer for how stressed I’m feeling, and quite often an early warning to take some time out. I’m not quite friends with it, but we’ve learned to live with each other.”

“I have unilateral tinnitus – meaning it is in one ear – although that ear more than makes up for it! I was lucky enough to be referred to a hearing therapist who recommended the British Tinnitus Association as a place to find information and support. And they have been fantastic at both. In the last few years, I’ve downloaded information about the condition, attended online group support sessions, watched science and research webinars during Tinnitus Week, and more.”

The British Tinnitus Association’s vision is “A world where no one suffers from tinnitus” which Karen fully supports. She said, “I’m power walking the virtual London Marathon to help raise money for the British Tinnitus Association so that they can continue supporting sufferers and funding research. I also hope to raise awareness of the condition and point people in the direction of the BTA so they can learn more about the condition and receive any help they need.”

The BTA’s Fundraising Officer Jess Pollard commented “We’re thrilled that Karen has joined our virtual marathon team – she understands how important our services are and is dedicated to raising vital funds and awareness for tinnitus. Thank you, Karen!”

Please help Karen reach her £500 fundraising goal at justgiving.com/fundraising/karen-christian-tinnitus, or email [email protected] take part in your own challenge.

About the British Tinnitus Association

The British Tinnitus Association is an independent charity and the primary source of information for people with tinnitus. It helps to facilitate an improved quality of life for people with tinnitus through a range of support options including support groups, a helpline and its website, while also taking steps to bring forward the day when tinnitus is cured. The charity works to inform and educate medical professionals and the community on what tinnitus is and how to manage it. The British Tinnitus Association wants “a world where no one suffers from tinnitus”. It wants to find better ways to manage tinnitus and, ultimately, to help find a cure. In 2020, the publication of its Tinnitus Manifesto led to more than 120,000 people signing a petition for more funding for tinnitus research to find cures.

EU power grab: Brussels demands flying EU flag at Tokyo 2020 Olympics ceremony

EU power grab: Brussels demands flying EU flag at Tokyo 2020 Olympics ceremony

European Commissioner Margaritis Schinas and Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa wrote a letter to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach asking for the Slovenian team to carry the EU flag.

Slovenia is currently holding the EU Council’s rotating presidency. The two chiefs said that carrying the EU flag at the Olympics opening ceremony would “render Slovenian athletes ambassadors for European unity and the values underpinning our Union, which match those of the Olympic movement”.

They wrote that the flag could stand as a “symbol of peaceful coexistence, tolerance and solidarity”.

They added: “We will fully support you in any way you see appropriate in introducing this special and historical gesture.”

They added that the gesture could “serve as a powerful representation of how unity and peace must be celebrated through this event, fundamental as they are to both the European and Olympic spirit”.

“We believe that, as two organisations united by these shared values, the European Union and the International Olympic Committee are uniquely positioned to promote peace and understanding at a time when the world needs it most”, Mr Jansa and Mr Schinas wrote.

The Olympic Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 8 in Tokyo, Japan.

It is not the first time the EU has made such a demand.

In 2004, then European Commission President Romano Prodi called for athletes from EU member states to showcase the EU flag as well as their own national flag during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

The idea was praised by France’s Europe Affairs Minister Clement Beaune.

He wrote: “Full support, dear Schinas.

“A beautiful symbol, in addition to our national flags.”

With just four days before the opening ceremony in Tokyo, 68 percent of respondents in an Asahi newspaper poll expressed doubt about the ability of Olympic organisers to control coronavirus infections, with 55 percent saying they were opposed to the Games going ahead.

Three-quarters of the 1,444 people in the telephone survey said they agreed with a decision to ban spectators from events.

As COVID-19 cases rise in Tokyo, which is under a fourth state of emergency, public concern has grown that hosting an event with tens of thousands of overseas athletes, officials and journalists could accelerate infection rates in Japan’s capital and introduce variants that are more infectious or deadlier.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has said he hopes the Japanese public will warm to the Games once competition begins and as Japanese athletes begin winning medals.

“We will continue to co-operate and work closely with organisers such as Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo 2020, and the IOC to ensure we have a safe and secure environment for the Games,” government spokesperson, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at a regular briefing.

Games officials on Sunday reported the first COVID-19 case among competitors in the athletes’ village in Tokyo where 11,000 athletes are expected to stay during the Games.

Since July 2, Tokyo 2020 organisers have reported 58 positive cases among athletes, officials and journalists.

Any major outbreak in the village could wreak havoc on competitions because those either infected or isolating would not be able to compete.

Olympic officials and individual event organisers have contingency plans to deal with infections among athletes.

A Tokyo 2020 spokesperson said the village was a safe place to stay, adding the infection rate among athletes and other Games-related people visiting Japan was nearly 0.1 pct.

On Sunday six British track and field athletes along with two staff members were forced to isolate after someone on their flight to Japan tested positive for COVID-19.

“Many athletes may have parties or ceremonies before they go to Tokyo where there may be cheering or greeting. So they may also have a risk to get infected in their own countries,” said Koji Wada, a professor at Tokyo’s International University of Health and Welfare and an adviser on the government’s coronavirus response.

The latest surge in cases in Tokyo comes after four earlier waves, the deadliest of which was in January.

New COVID-19 cases in Tokyo reached 1,410 on Saturday, the most since the start of the year, with new infections exceeding 1,000 for five straight days.

Most of those new cases are among younger people, as Japan has succeeded in getting most of its vulnerable elderly population vaccinated with at least one shot, although only 32 percent of the overall population has so far received one.

FROM THE FIELD: South Sudan’s displaced youth, help power change

FROM THE FIELD: South Sudan’s displaced youth, help power change

Young people who were displaced by conflict in South Sudan have returned home to power change in their community.

Hundreds of thousands of people, young and old, were forced to flee their homes over recent years following civil war and widespread insecurity in the eastern African country.

Thirty young men and women in the city of Wau, have recently undertaken vocational training on installing solar power systems supported by the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM).

These are OUR waters! Argentina launches Falklands power grab – UK companies targetted

These are OUR waters! Argentina launches Falklands power grab - UK companies targetted

The Argentine secretaries of Energy, Dario Matinez, and of the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic, Daniel Filmus, said they will notify the three companies of the sanctions issued towards them for commercial activities in the disputed waters.

Argentina claims they did not have the authorisation of the its government, who claim the British Overseas Territory as theirs.

Mr Filmus said: “These companies are not authorised to operate nor have they requested any type of authorisation.”

The secretaries said they “were committing a crime in Argentina” and the three companies continued to participate in exploratory and exploitation works.

The oil companies are Chrysaor Holdings Limited and Harbor Energy Plc, which are based in Britain, and the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum LP.

They have a period of several days to respond to Argentina but if they don’t the country will proceed with their disqualification.

Any disqualification would prevent them from participating for a period of five to 20 years in bidding processes to operate in waters off the Argentine continental shelf, officials said.

Between 2011 and 2015, eight other companies from different countries have already been sanctioned.

This means they cannot operate in Argentina and others areas through a criminal complaint.

Mr Filmus added that the “action that Argentina is taking is supported by declarations from multilateral organisations such as the Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE) and the G77 + China, which have defended United Nations resolution 2065 for a bilateral negotiation as a form of final and peaceful resolution of the dispute with the United Kingdom”.

According to the Argentine government, several oil companies have no interest in participating in exploratory activities in the region while the dispute between the UK and Argentina persists.

Last week, Argentina demanded the Falkland Islands be given to them as it is their “inalienable goal” to gain sovereignty over the South Atlantic territory.

In June, Buenos Aires took its claim over the Falkland Islands to the UN Decolonisation Committee.

Now, Argentine Defence Minister Agustin Rossi has declared: “Malvinas are an inalienable goal.”

He said that there is “an inalienable objective of the national government” in recognising the geopolitical importance of the Falkland Islands.

The defence minister emphasised the advancement of the militarisation process in achieving this.

Argentina and Britain fought a war in 1982 for dominance of the archipelago, in which the South American country was defeated.

The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with an Argentine surrender on June 14, returning the islands to British control.

In total, 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities.

Diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Argentina were restored in 1989 following a meeting in Madrid, at which the two governments issued a joint statement.

In 1994, Argentina adopted a new constitution, which declared the Falkland Islands by law as an Argentine province.

However, the islands continue to operate as a self-governing British Overseas Territory.
