Elvis Presley proposed to his girlfriend just before he met Priscilla Presley

Elvis Presley was drafted into the United States Military in March 1958. The star had to put his music career on hold and move to Friedberg, Germany to go and be of service to his country. The singer and actor had already amassed quite a following at the time after already releasing five huge albums, and had starred in four Hollywood films. Before he left for Europe, Elvis was madly in love with his girlfriend Anita Wood.

Anita was in some ways a lot like Elvis. She was brought up in Memphis after moving there from a rural area of Tennessee and placed a lot of importance on family.

This aspect of Anita was shown by her strong relationship with Elvis’ mother, Gladys Presley. Gladys was quoted as saying she wanted the pair to get married.

Elvis maintained his relationship with Anita from 1957 to 1962. Throughout his time in Germany from 1958 to 1960, the star frequently sent her heartfelt love letters telling her about his time in Europe.

One of the letters the singer penned to his then-girlfriend – whom he affectionately nicknamed Little – included him promising to marry her when he returned from his service.

He wrote in 1958: “Also, I guarantee that when I marry, it will be to Miss Little Presley Wood.”

Elvis went on to add that their marriage may not happen soon, however.

He said: “There is a lot you have to understand though. Only God knows when the time will be right. So you have got to consider this and love me, trust me and keep yourself clean and wholesome because that is the big thing that can determine our lives and happiness together.

“If you believe me and trust me you will wait for me and our future will be filled with happiness. With God’s help it will work itself out and you will understand and be patient. I worked so hard to build up my career and everything, and if you truly love me you would not want anything to happen to it and cause me to be unhappy.”

Elvis then spoke about wanting to have a son with Anita after they were married.

Another letter addressed to Anita from Elvis included lines about their sex life. One passage read: “I can’t explain to you how I crave you and desire your lips and your body under me darling.

“I can feel it now. The things we did and the desire we had for each other’s body!!!”

Of course, just a year later in 1959, Elvis met someone who would grab his attention: Priscilla Presley.

After Elvis started a relationship with Priscilla, he moved back to the USA in 1960 once his military career ended.

Elvis kept the relationship with Priscilla relatively secret until 1962 when Anita found out about his two-timing.

When she found out Anita left the King, and was then begged by the star not to reveal his relationship with the 14-year-old Priscilla.

She later said: “He kept calling and I remember when he got me on the phone: ‘Little, please don’t tell anybody about this. This girl, again, she’s just a child. She’s just a fourteen-year-old child it means absolutely nothing.

“‘She just wants to visit, it means nothing. And if you told anybody, I’d get in a lot of trouble, she’s so young.’ He just begged me: ‘Little, Little, Little.'”

Elvis Presley's father detailed real reason the King left Priscilla Presley

Elvis Presley first met Priscilla Presley (née Beaulieu) in Germany while he was stationed in the army. The star, who had found a great deal of success already in America, was drafted in 1958 during which he went to Friedberg, Germany. During this time he met the young Priscilla. After their relationship blossomed, he brought her back to live with him in Graceland in 1963. The couple were married in 1967 after being together for almost a decade. A year later, their daughter Lisa Marie Presley was born.

Unfortunately for the family, the couple split up in 1973 following an affair between Priscilla and a karate instructor, Mike Stone.

Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, tells a different story, however.

In 1978 the patriarch of the family wrote a lengthy piece in the magazine Good Housekeeping following Elvis’ death in 1977.

Speaking about his son’s relationships, Vernon wrote: “His mother [Gladys] and I didn’t try to influence Elvis’ choice of a wife any more than we’d tried to influence his choice of a career. We didn’t care whom he married just so long as she was the girl with whom he’d be happiest.”

Vernon then detailed how Priscilla stayed with him in Memphis to finish high school in the early 1960s.

During this time, he said: “Being an Air Force officer’s daughter, Priscilla had been brought up to be disciplined and strong-minded, but she is also a tender and loving girl.”

He then revealed why he believed the couple’s relationship fell apart after just six years.

Vernon wrote: “I believe that Elvis’ marriage to her failed simply because he realised after the wedding that he didn’t really want to be married.”

Ginger was in Elvis’ home Graceland when he died on August 16, 1977. She was the final girlfriend of the star and had been given a diamond engagement ring just before his death.

Vernon wrote: “Finally, just a day or so before he died, I told him: ‘I keep hearing and reading that you’re going to announce your engagement.

“‘Is that right? When are you going to get married?’ [Elvis said:] ‘Only God knows.'”

Vernon added: “I got a feeling then that maybe he was changing his mind about marriage.”

Despite Elvis and Priscilla splitting up, they remained good friends after the divorce.

Priscilla received a staggering $ 725,000 settlement and the pair agreed to share custody of their daughter, Lisa-Marie.

On the day they left the courthouse, Elvis and Priscilla walked out of their divorce proceedings hand in hand.

Elvis proposed to co-star Debra Paget 'Never got over her': Priscilla even looked like her

Like Elvis, Debra was deeply religious but also had a wilder side – which would be exposed three years later in one of the most provocative scenes ever seen on screen at that time. SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH

From the start, Elvis thought she was “the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.”

In 1997 Debra revealed: “Following the film, he did ask me to marry him but my parents objected to my getting married. I cared about Elvis, but being one not to disobey my parents, that did not take place.”

In fact, she was actually already engaged in a two-year affair with the billionaire industralist and film producer Howard Hughes – a man far more rich, famous and powerful than Elvis.

But Debra always spoke highly of Elvis in the following years, saying: “He was a precious, humble, lovely person. Elvis had a lot of talent; there was a lot of depth they never used. He could have been a fine actor.”

Elvis begged girlfriend Anita not to expose Priscilla affair 'I'll get in so much trouble'

Back in Germany, Priscilla was determined not to let Elvis forget her and sent him letters in bright pink envelopes. Anita finally found one in 1962 when they were together in California, where Elvis was shooting a movie.

Anita said: “It was pressed in a book in the library outside of his bedroom… In the letter, it said, ‘Please call my dad. I want to come over there and if you call my dad, I know he will let me come, he will listen to you. I miss you’.

“So when he came in, I said, ‘What is this letter, who is this, this Priscilla, you said she was just a child?’

“He got so mad because I found the letter. He took me and he shoved me up against the closet. He was so mad at me, just livid because I had found the letter.”

Elvis cried before his wedding 'I have no choice' – Why did Elvis Presley marry Priscilla?

There were rumours that Priscilla’s father, angry after so many years living with his daughter, threatened to prosecute Elvis for taking a minor across state lines.

He had been travelling with Priscilla to Los Angeles and Las Vegas when she was 15, which was contrary to the agreement made with her parents when they permitted her to leave Germany aged 16 to move to the US.

Elvis had assured them that their daughter would remain in Memphis, chaperoned by the star’s grandmother Minnie Mae, living in a separate house and attending school.

Instead, Priscilla even wrote fake postcards which were mailed from Memphis by staff whle she was travelling with Elvis.

However, other claims suggested Priscilla herself had pressured Elvis into marriage, threatening to go to the press with the details about their relationship, especially when she was 14 and 15.

Elvis’ dad Vernon Presley put a sign up outside his Graceland office to keep Priscilla out

As Elvis Presley shot to fame, he decided to buy the Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, moving in with his extended family in 1957. Behind the house is Vernon Presley’s office, where The King’s father would handle his son’s finances, household bills and oversee two secretaries replying to fan mail. Now, if you’ve ever visited Graceland, you’ll have seen the passive-aggressive sign Vernon put on the door.
Vernon’s sign reads: “Please read and observe: no loafing in the office, strictly for employees only!

“If you have business in here, please take care of it and leave. Vernon Presley.”

Express.co.uk took part in a virtual live tour of the Graceland mansion earlier this week and archivist Angie Marchese revealed the true story behind the blunt notice.

The Elvis Presley expert said: “My favourite story about the office is the note that’s on the door that Vernon had put up there because Priscilla would come here and visit with Patsy [Presley].”

Last year, Angie gave Elvis fans a mini-tour of Vernon’s office, which was shared on Graceland’s official Instagram account.

Inside she pointed out a surprising revelation found in a 1958 Memphis phonebook.

The archivist looked up the Presley surname inside and found Harold, Elvis’ cousin and lots of other Presleys, but there was no sign of The King.

Perhaps Elvis was retracted to stop fans constantly calling up the mansion, trying talk to the star?

Angie also shared what was kept inside Vernon’s office safe cabinet, discovering a pair of Elvis’ sunglasses and a stack of The King’s RCA records.

Also inside were some To and From labels addressed to Elvis at Graceland.

Vernon died in 1979 aged 63, two years after Elvis. The King’s father is buried next to his son in Graceland’s Meditation Garden.

Interestingly, Graceland only have one item of Vernon’s clothes in the archives, a pair of trousers, as girlfriend Sandy Miller handled his estate.

Priscilla Presley: What did Elvis's ex make of his girlfriends? ‘Take care of him’

“‘You are always with my daddy, and my mommy never got to be with my daddy. So that’s why.’”

In an interview with ITV’s Loose Women, however, Priscilla claimed to have a very different memory of their relationship, even making sure Linda was good to Elvis while they were together.

Speaking about the day of their divorce, Priscilla said: “When we were in the courtroom we were holding hands before the judge.

“We never went to court. We went behind the chambers, and we were sitting there and I was looking at his hands because they were so bloated…

“I asked him, he was dating Linda Thompson at the time, and I said, you know, ‘Is she taking care of you? Are you okay?’ And he said ‘Yes, I’m good. I’m alright.’”

Michael Jackson: Lisa Marie Presley kept marriage secret from mother Priscilla Presley

Shortly after Lisa Marie’s divorce from her first husband Danny Keough in 1994, she started a relationship with King of Pop Michael Jackson. The 27-year-old had met him just a few years prior and the loved-up couple decided to get married sooner rather than later. While the world looked on in shock at the time, Priscilla told talk show host Oprah Winfrey how she didn’t know anything about it.
Speaking in 2005 on Oprah, Priscilla revealed 37-year-old Michael had tried to connect with Lisa Marie years earlier.

Elvis Presley’s ex-wife said she was “concerned and suspicious” about Michael when he called and asked her to have dinner with him and to bring Lisa Marie along.

She explained: “I said: ‘She’s only 16, she’s kind of young.’ And he was saying: ‘No I want to meet her!’ So I said, you know, she’s in school right now.”

Despite Priscilla stopping their contact, Michael later reached out to Lisa Marie himself, starting their relationship.

Priscilla told Oprah: “I didn’t know him. That kind of passed and he got hold of her somehow through a mutual friend… she went off and got married and I didn’t even know they got married!

“I was at home in the morning and it came on the news. Someone came in and said: ‘Lisa got married!’

“I said: ‘No she didn’t, who did she marry?’ They said Michael Jackson. I said: ‘No, she wouldn’t do that to me.’”

Laughing, the star said: “Sure enough, it was on the news and there were helicopters over my house. So she called me and I said: ‘Did you marry Michael Jackson?’”

Priscilla continued: “I couldn’t help think there’s Graceland, there’s Neverland, there’s a whole thread which goes into what he does and even in his business.

“I do think there was some of that – not that he didn’t care, but I think there’s a whole other agenda going on.”

When pressed about her feelings towards Michael, she continued: “I would hate to believe it was for one thing. I really don’t want to go there with that, it’s just hard for me to believe that people do that.”

Lisa Marie was later quizzed about whether she consummated her marriage with Michael. She admitted she had.

Priscilla butted in: “I do think there was an agenda there too, though. Because he wanted children.”

Years later it was revealed Michael split up with Lisa Marie because she wouldn’t give him children when he wanted them. He also threatened to have children with Debbie Rowe instead.

Lisa Marie told Oprah in a subsequent interview: “I know she [Rowe] was there the whole time telling him she would do it. He would tell me: ‘If you’re not gonna do it, Debbie said she’ll do it.’

“And we would get into arguments because that wasn’t how to handle it. But that’s how he knew how to handle it: ‘If you’re not going to do it, this person will. Are you going to do it or not?'”

Michael and Lisa Marie divorced in 1996. Later that same year he married Rowe, who later gave birth to his first two children, Prince Jackson and Paris Jackson in 1997 and 1998 respectively.
