Max Verstappen gives blunt response as Red Bull star quizzed about Mercedes challenge

After topping the timing sheets a few weeks ago in Formula One pre-season testing, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen had little to say when asked about Mercedes ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend, insisting he’s been repeating himself for weeks.
Red Bull beat Mercedes during pre-season testing, alluding to potential issues for the seven time world champions, who finished fifth fastest overall.

However, Verstappen remained tight lipped about the team’s confidence, and if they can bring the fight to Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

“I have been repeating this now for a few weeks. We will see,” he said.

Verstappen finished third in the drivers standing’s at the end of last year, after Hamilton dominated much of the season.

However, having the fastest car in pre-season testing now means that Red Bull go into the first race of the season in Bahrain on Sunday as favourites.

With Mercedes on the backfoot after various issues in testing, on paper, Red Bull look to be the team to beat.

And he said he could learn a lot from his experienced team-mate this season, after the Mexican picked up a maiden win in 2020.

“First of all I think the team of course needs to be happy in the first place,” laughed Verstappen when asked if he was happy to have Perez on board.

“But I have known Checo now for many years here in the paddock, and of course now that we are team-mates you get a bit more of an insight of course. How Checo is working, so far it’s running very smoothly.

“The feedback, we both are heading into the right..the same direction, I hope it’s the right direction.

“It’s all going very smooth, and it’s nice of course to get a bit more of an insight from his side, from his past experience, that’s always very good and I just hope as a team now we can really score a good amount of points and really put the pressure to Mercedes every single weekend.”

Red Bull are looking to better their second place finish last season and dethrone Mercedes in 2021 before the new regulations come into Formula One next season.

The opening race of the season gets underway this weekend, with the first race in Bahrain ahead of a mammoth 23-race calendar.

Verstappen meanwhile had his game face on, stating: “I always feel confident, even if I would be driving last, I would still feel confident.

“I don’t think we will be last, let’s say that.”
