Inside Xbox Series X|S Optimized: A Plague Tale: Innocence

One of the biggest benefits of all that power in the hardware is giving developers the ability to make games that are Optimized for Xbox Series X|S. This means that they’ve taken full advantage of the unique capabilities of Xbox Series X|S, both for new titles built natively using the Xbox Series X|S development environment, as well as previously released titles that have been rebuilt specifically for the console.

In our Inside Xbox Series X|S Optimized series, these creators share the behind-the-scenes accounts of how they’re optimizing their titles for Xbox Series X|S and what that means for the future of gaming. Today, we’ll be chatting with Executive Producer at Asobo Studio Brice Davin about optimizing A Plague Tale: Innocence for Xbox Series X|S.

Q: “What excites you most about developing and bringing A Plague Tale: Innocence to life on next-generation hardware?”

A: We’re super excited to bring A Plague Tale: Innocence to more players who have not yet experienced surviving the rats alongside our young heroes. It’s always a thrill to invite new people to our universe and share Amicia and Hugo’s journey with them. Of course, we are also happy to offer our fans the opportunity to join the adventure with their new console and relive the epic journey of initiation but in an enhanced and even more immersive version.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Q: In addition to benefiting from the power and performance of Xbox Series X|S for quicker load times and other enhancements, what Xbox Series X|S features were you most excited to explore leveraging in the development of A Plague Tale: Innocence?

A: Besides the faster load times, we think the 4K resolution and 3D audio are a real plus for a game like A Plague Tale: Innocence.

Q: Why is your development team especially enthusiastic about these features?

A: A Plague Tale: Innocence is above all a narrative experience and the emotional story of family bonds and friendship in a brutal but splendid world. Dialogue and music are as key as graphics and here we can blend those into an optimal mix. We think having 4K graphics for the first time on consoles with the Xbox Series X will bring the most out of our universe. Thanks to 3D audio, both Xbox Series X|S takes immersion to the next level, served by the beautiful soundtrack, composed by Olivier Derivière, and the performance of our actors. We definitely think it is a compelling experience to live or relive, and it may change the way you perceive all the details of the world and the depth of Hugo and Amicia’s relationship as well as all our orphans’ tragic destiny. The players will also enjoy optimal load times and cross saves of course, giving more fluidity to players’ experience on the device they want.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Q: How do you expect fans of A Plague Tale: Innocence will respond to playing it on Xbox Series X|S with these enhancements?

A: To us, having our game on the Xbox Series X|S is a way to gather different generations and types of players together around a universal tale. We hope the newcomers will share their experience with their relatives and find an echo of their own family bonds in this adventure. So many people identify with one of our orphans. It is very heartwarming when they contact us telling us they understood our story and were able to share this with the one they love. We invite them to watch and play together around their Xbox Series console. Why not join our community with as much enthusiasm and kindness as the first fans? It would be awesome to get their feedback and feelings as well!

Q: What does Smart Delivery mean for your game and how you’re bringing A Plague Tale: Innocence to fans?

A: A Plague Tale: Innocence on Xbox One is of course naturally backward compatible with Xbox Series X|S but we really wanted to offer our fans the HD version the game deserves, with enhanced visuals and smoother gameplay thanks to the 60fps. The title is also cross-save meaning your progression and your achievements from the Xbox One will carry over to the Xbox Series consoles. It’s a great opportunity to replay the game to achieve your 1000 Gamerscore if you missed a few flowers!

A Plague Tale: Innocence

Q: What does Xbox Series X|S development enable in current or future projects that you could not have achieved with the previous generation of consoles?

A: We have just announced the sequel to our first opus – A Plague Tale: Requiem, coming in 2022. 4K resolution enables us to craft the most beautiful and immersive action-adventure game we have ever dreamt of. It pushes the boundaries of our landscapes and helps us develop epic-scale, never-before-seen rat waves that the players will have to face. And that is just terribly exciting.

Beddgelert – the Welsh village with a shaggy dog’s tale at its heart

Gelert was said to have been owned by Llewelyn the Great, the Prince of Gwynedd who ruled Wales in the early 13th century. According to legend, Llewelyn had a palace at Beddgelert and often went hunting in the area. One day he left his dog at home and on his return Gelert came to meet him, springing joyfully but stained and smeared with blood.

This worried the prince and he went to check on his baby son, but found only an empty cradle with the bedclothes and floor covered in blood.

Llewelyn was enraged and thrust his sword into Gelert, thinking the dog had killed his son, but as Gelert yelped on his final breaths, this was answered by the cry of a baby.

Llewelyn searched and found his heir unharmed near the body of a mighty wolf. Realising that Gelert had slain the predator and saved his son, the prince was overcome with sorrow and was said to have never smiled again. He buried Gelert in the village and laid a stone in tribute.

Gelert’s grave today (Jim Linwood)

Visiting Beddgelert today

It’s a sad tale, but one that has very little basis in history. Llewelyn was the king of Wales at the time, but the legend of Gelert reportedly came to life much later from local businessmen keen to attract more Snowdonian visitors south with a suitably sentimental tale.

And it’s worked a treat – visitors now flock to the village and surrounding hills, and you can even take home a Gelert fridge magnet or postcards from the village shop.

They really had no need, because Beddgelert is a delightful spot on its own merit, particularly when autumn colours the trees.

The houses, shops and hotels are mainly built of stone and the might of Snowdon, the tallest peak in Wales and England, dominates the landscape to the north.

An easy riverside walk from the centre will take you to a stone marking Gelert’s grave, with a plaque retelling the legend in English and in Welsh.

A little further along is a ruined roofless stone cottage, and just inside the door is a bronze sculpture of Gelert standing watch. You will notice the dog’s nose is quite shiny because so many visitors rub it for luck.

This is one of several walks in the area, with plenty of more challenging yomps if you and your dogs are happier on the fells.

The Walking Britain website suggests 30 to try.

Beddgelert is a beautiful spot

The Gelert legend lives on

If the tale of Gelert already sounded familiar, it may be because it’s one of the major plot devices in Disney’s Lady And The Tramp – but it’s a rat, rather than a wolf, that sees Tramp banished until Lady proves his innocence.

The tale has also inspired several poets, including WR Spencer who wrote Beth Gelert Or The Grave Of The Greyhound in 1800 and Walter Richard Cassels who wrote Llewellyn in the late 1800s.

Beddgelert is a two-hour drive from Manchester and two-and-a-half from Birmingham and there’s plenty to explore once you’re done rubbing that faithful nose.

The village is one of the stops on the Welsh Highland Railway, which runs steam trains with heritage carriages between Caernarfon and Porthmadog. While the nearby Sygun copper mine offers self-guided underground audio tours of the site which has been mined since Roman times.

PS Plus July 2021 FREE PS5 and PS4 games: Predator, Uncharted Lost Legacy and Plague Tale

Sony is getting ready to reveal the free PlayStation Plus games for July 2021.

The next batch of PS Plus free games will be officially revealed on June 30 at 4.30pm. The games will be available to download less than a week later on July 6.

For those keeping track, this gives existing subscribers just over a week to download the current selection of games, which include Star Wars Squadrons and Operation Tango.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is staying on PlayStation Plus until August 2021.

In the run up to the big reveal, Reddit users have been having fun predicting which games will appear on PS Plus this July.

The monthly predictions thread has been pretty successful as of late, so it will be interesting to see if the trend continues.

First-party games tend to get the most votes, although Sony is starting to run out of PlayStation exclusives to give away.

With pretty much the entire saga appearing on PS Plus in the past, Uncharted Lost Legacy is a popular choice.

Gravity Rush 2 also makes an appearance, alongside Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, Gran Turismo Sport and The Last of Us Part 2 – which seems like a real long shot.

Elsewhere, fans are predicting everything from Far Cry 5 and Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered, to Dark Souls 3 and Resident Evil 7.

Indie favourites like Untitled Goose Game and Firewatch get a few votes, as well as The Forest, Celeste and Visage.

There are votes for World War Z, Snowrunner, Ace Combat 7, Dragon Age Inquisition, a Need for Speed game, Jedi Fallen Order, Marvel’s Avengers and Shenmue.

Predator Hunting Grounds is one of the more popular choices, especially as Sony tends to give away at least one online multiplayer game each month.

Judging by a previous leak, A Plague Tale Innocence will be the free PS5 game for July 2021, although nothing has been confirmed.

Other potential PS5 freebies include The Pathless, Nioh Remastered and Little Devil Inside, the latter of which launches in July.

In the meantime, PlayStation Plus subscribers can download and play Star Wars Squadrons and Operation Tango.

Star Wars Squadrons is a multiplayer space shooter in which squads of starships battle it out in huge online battles.

“Master the art of starfighter combat in the authentic piloting experience Star Wars: Squadrons. Buckle up and feel the adrenaline of first-person multiplayer space dogfights alongside your squadron.

“Take control of starfighters from both the New Republic and Imperial fleets such as the X-wing and TIE fighter. Customise loadouts and cosmetics, divert power between weapons, shields, and engines, while immersing yourself in the cockpit.

“In addition, players will have the option to play the entirety of the game in virtual reality on PlayStation VR!”

Operation Tango, on the other hand, is a co-operative spy adventure in which players team up to bring a “hi-tech global menace to its knees”.

PS Plus July 2021 LEAKS: A Plague Tale on PS5, more for PS4 on PlayStation Plus

The PS Plus July 2021 reveal is expected to be shared on Wednesday, June 30, and will be followed by the big release a week later.

The big announcement is expected to include at least two games, both of which will be available on PS5.

As always, Sony can do whatever they want, meaning they can change this format and provide as many games as they want.

And whenever they choose to offer a PlayStation 5 exclusive, like Operation: Tango in June 2021.

Perhaps to make up for the extra PS5 game, Sony also made it possible to download Star Wars: Squadrons and Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown.

And with another PS5 exclusive reportedly being planned for July, there could be another three-game PlayStation Plus announcement coming soon.

A new rumour this week claims that a native PS5 version of a Plague Tale: Innocence will be one of the free PS Plus games for July 2021.

This report was connected to the game’s sequel being revealed during the Xbox E3 event and being announced as an Xbox Game Pass title.

And like what was rumoured, a Microsoft announcement revealed this week: “If you want to experience A Plague Tale: Innocence and discover Amicia and Hugo’s story today, the game is available to play with Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.

“No matter how you choose to play the game, there has never been a better time to discover or revisit the poignant tale of the story’s first arc in anticipation of its sequel’s release in 2022, which will also come day one with Xbox Game Pass.”

The next-generation version has been confirmed to feature the following:

  • 4K UHD (on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5)
  • 60 FPS
  • 3D audio support
  • Xbox One & PS4 versions can be upgraded for free.

And anyone who wants a short description of A Plague Tale can find it here: “A Plague Tale is the new story-focused action-adventure game series of rats, war, and death created by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive.

“Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in a heartrending journey through the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will come to know and trust each other.

“As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds, they will fight to find purpose in this brutal, unforgiving world.”

Diver SWALLOWED by humpback whale and lives to tell the tale – ‘Completely inside’

Michael Packard, 56, was on his second dive of the day looking for lobsters in Cape Code, a peninsula in the US state of Massachusetts, on the southeast coast. His vessel “Ja’n J” was sitting just off popular Herring Cove Beach – alongside a fleet of other boats fishing for striped bass.

The method behind commercial lobster diving is collecting lobsters from the sandy bottom while diving.

And, 45ft (14 metres) deep, this is where the father-of-two had his terrifying encounter with the humpback whale.

He told Cape Cod Times: “All of a sudden, I felt this huge shove and the next thing I knew it was completely black.

“I could sense I was moving, and I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth.”

At first, Mr Packard thought he had been swallowed by a great white shark.

But he could not feel any teeth and did notice any serious injuries.

It was then that he realised he was inside a whale.

He added: “I was completely inside; it was completely black. I thought to myself, ‘there’s no way I’m getting out of here. I’m done, I’m dead.’

“All I could think of was my boys — they’re 12 and 15 years old.”

'Out Of Line' Will Draw A Beautiful Tale On Switch This Summer

Out Of Line© Nerd Monkeys / Hantinh Interactive

The list of intriguing Indie games coming to the Switch eShop this year continues to grow, and another one to consider is Out of Line. Developed by Nerd Monkeys and published by Hatinh Interactive, Switch will be the first console to get the game with release planned alongside the PC version this Summer.

Out of Line is a puzzle platformer that looks to utilise the character’s spear in a variety of imaginative ways. The art style is certainly eye-catching and the story will revolve around lost memories; Francisco Santos, Lead Artist at Nerd Monkeys, says the following in the press release.

Out of Line is being designed with a stylized approach. The mechanics of the game revolve around San’s spear, something the character sees as a tool that will help him navigate this strange world. We want players to learn through experimentation, constantly tinkering with puzzles until they find a logical solution. This design philosophy plays a thematic role in our game, as most individuals find their purpose through trial and error.

You can see a trailer below.

It’s worth noting there’ll be a livestream and Q&A session by developer Nerd Monkeys on April 29 at 11.00am (PST) / 2.00pm (EST) / 7.00pm (GMT) / 8.00pm (GMT+1), so it’ll be worth checking out the YouTube channel to follow that.

Is this one on your radar for the Summer?

“El Hijo – A Wild West Tale” is an exciting spaghetti-western stealth game, in which you guide a young boy on his quest to find his mother. As a six-year-old, “El Hijo” must always sneak past the dangers of his world. As he overcomes his challenges, he gains self-confidence, becomes more cunning and, along with it, finds more schemes to get past his foes. His epic journey will lead him through a remote monastery, a harsh and unforgiving stretch of desert, and a frontier town rife with crime and villainy. The journey begins, when a farmer and her son are attacked by bandits who raze their farm to the ground. The mother decides to leave the boy at a secluded monastery to protect him. However, the place doesn’t feel right and he plans his escape. “El Hijo – A Wild West Tale” is a non-violent stealth game in which you rely on the mischievous, playfulness of a young child. Using the shadows to his advantage is the core element of the game, as “El Hijo” will often have to hide. Without needlessly adding new mechanics, the gameplay is extended naturally, as variations of existing mechanics are gradually introduced and then combined to increase the challenge. These twists on familiar mechanics are often a product of the varied, increasingly dangerous environments that “El Hijo” must traverse to reach his ultimate goal.
