Joe Biden broke royal protocol ‘to throw US media a bone’ after difficult trip

Queen: Royal protocol for speaking is ‘nonsense’ says expert

The US President had a private meeting with the Queen when she hosted him at Windsor for tea and an inspection of the guard. Their conversation, which took place after the conclusion of the G7 summit in Cornwall, should have stayed private, as is protocol when meeting Her Majesty. Instead, Mr Biden revealed to the press that the Queen had asked him about Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

The breach of protocol is the same mistake made by his predecessor Donald Trump, who told ITV’s Good Morning Britain the Queen had described Brexit as “complex”.

However, it has been suggested that Mr Biden may have actually been perfectly aware that the usual protocol is to keep the meeting private, but felt like he had to do something to appease the American press pack, who had been dissatisfied with the trip.

Pod Save the Queen is hosted by Ann Gripper and features Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers.

The Mirror’s deputy political editor Ben Glaze, who had been at the G7 summit, was a guest on the podcast this week and explained that the US media had a very bad trip.

Firstly, they had to deal with international travel in a time of strict coronavirus restrictions, including periods of isolation, while the world leaders were exempt.

Mr Glaze also claimed they “moaned” about access to the G7 summit and with the Biden-Queen meeting at Windsor.

He said: “There is a possibility, and this is only me thinking out loud, that he felt he had to throw the US media, the travelling White House press corps, a bone.

“Because they’ve not had a great trip, right? They’ve had various degrees of self-isolation.

“And obviously covering summits in this sort of climate, this is the first face-to-face international summit that any of us have dealt with during the pandemic.

“We hear that the US corps did not enjoy their trip to the UK and were moaning about access in Cornwall.”

Then, there was the issue of timing of the press conferences on the Sunday, which caused confusion and difficulties.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was set to give the first press conference, as he is the leader of the host country.

He was originally going to give a press conference at 2.05pm on the last day of the G7, but they realised this clashed with an England match in the Euros.

They tried to change the time so that people would actually watch it, but they could not push it back because Mr Biden, who was due to speak second, had a meeting with the Queen that afternoon.

Instead, they “moved heaven and earth” to bring it forwards to a 1.45pm start, with journalists arriving 15 minutes before, but delays at the event meant it started just after 2pm anyway.

Then, Mr Biden did not give a speech in Cornwall at all, instead opting to do a mini one at the airport in Newquay.

Joe Biden ’embarrassing’ for ‘forgetting words’ says host

Mr Glaze concluded: “So then he goes to Windsor for tea.

“And presumably the aides are telling him the journalists, ‘They’re not happy with this, Mr President’.

“So anyway, he reveals a bit of what the Queen said, and you can just imagine the Queen kicking back after tea, she’s had a busy weekend, just like, ‘Oh, what’s he done now?’”

Mr Myers said he had some experience with the US media when Mr Trump had been over for a state visit a few years ago.

e said they had been “moaning about access” then too.

However, he acknowledged that it must be difficult when you’re in a different country with different protocols and ways of doing things.

That said, he branded Mr Biden’s choice of disclosure “extraordinary”, given that he revealed she brought up two of the world’s controversial leaders, when he could have opted for something more innocuous.

KATIE Price paid tribute to her “beautiful” mum Amy after revealing she hasn’t got long left.

The 42-year-old shared a glamorous close-up portrait of her mum taken three years ago on Instagram.

She wrote: “Mummy you look beautiful in this picture three years ago ❤️❤️ I love you to the moon and back as we say ❤️❤️.”

Amy has a life-limiting lung condition called idopathic pulmonary fibrosis and would be at high risk of serious illness if she was to contract coronavirus.

Katie’s fans noted the similarities between the two and showered Amy with compliments.

One wrote: “Beautiful ❤️ you are your mums double.”

Another posted: “Princess looks like your mum so much! 😍.”

A third said: “You got your looks from her!”

Back in February Katie revealed Amy only had 32 per cent lung capacity and doesn’t have long left to live.

The businesswoman appeared on Northen Ireland’s Nolan Live and revealed her mum’s condition had deteriorated.

Amy, 64, is holding out hope for a lung transplant to prolong her life.

Katie said: “Now she’s on oxygen, it’s hit home again. She’s only got like 32 per cent left of her lung capacity. So if you imagine now being that out of breath, it must be awful, and it’s an awful way to go.

“It’s horrible to see my mum go through it because she’s so active, it’s cruel.”

The mum-of-five said Amy turned to the British Lung Foundation for support and advice and was told to make the most of the time she has left.

Katie continued: “Just build memories, take lots of pictures, that’s all you can do really. You know it’s coming and have to learn to deal with it.”

Amy also opened up about the grim reality of her health condition as she was unable to see her family due to Covid.

She appeared on Good Morning Britain via Zoom alongside Katie from their respective homes, telling hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid that she has “no hope” of surviving if she catches Covid or even a cold.

“I’m very up and down really, to be honest with you,” said Amy. “Obviously it’s terminal and I should imagine I’m in the last couple of years now.

“What with Covid and everything, if I catch a cold or Covid there’s just no hope, so that would be the end of it for me.

“But positively, I’m hoping, I’m pushing to see if I can get on the transplant list.

“Because there is no cure there’s nothing else they can do for me really, it’s just palliative care, they’re just trying to keep me comfortable.”

Amy then admitted that even if she did get a transplant there was not much chance of it being successful because of her age.

“My age is against me and the results are not that good as you get older and you could die in the operating theatre, you could reject (the donated organ)… and if you can get through all of that, you would have a better quality of life and maybe live another two or three years,” she explained.

The grandmother also revealed “it was somewhat of a relief” that she has not seen Katie or much of her family in real life for months.

“I haven’t seen Kate since October, since my birthday, but we’re a lot more closer because we make an effort to keep in contact with Zoom,” Amy said.

What is Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)?

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a condition in which the lungs become scarred and breathing becomes increasingly difficult.

It’s not clear what causes it, but it usually affects people who are around 70 to 75 years old, and is rare in people under 50.

Several treatments can help reduce the rate at which IPF gets worse, but there’s currently no treatment that can stop or reverse the scarring of the lungs.

The symptoms of IPF tend to develop gradually and get slowly worse over time.

Symptoms include shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, tiredness, loss of appetite and weight loss, rounded and swollen fingertips.

Pash Kovalev on being a dad again ‘A boy would be good to’

Rachel Riley interrupted by Pasha Kovalev during Zoom call

Rachel Riley, 35, has just had her 12-week scan and the baby, Pasha reveals, is due in October. And no, it wasn’t a surprise. “It’s a planned baby,” he says, adding that they don’t know its sex yet although they hope to find out before the birth. “We just want a healthy baby,” he says. Daughter Maven, whose name comes from a Hebrew word meaning one who knows, was born just before Christmas 2019.
Pasha says: “I’m loving having a daughter so having another would be lovely. But a boy would be good, too.” Rachel feels the same.

“She’s just relieved the news is out and she doesn’t have to hold in her stomach on Countdown each day!” Pasha, now 41, was 39 when he became a first-time father. “Yes, to be honest, up until my late 30s, I didn’t want to have kids.

“Rachel and I had been together for some time before we decided to have a child. Then something just clicked.

“When Maven arrived, I realised I’d been holding back for too long. I enjoy her so much.

“I wish I’d known sooner how much fun it would be – exhausting but so worth it.”

Maven has spent most of her life in lockdown.

Pasha says: “Covid-19 has been a terrible epidemic but, from my point of view, it had an upside.”

The happy couple

It has enabled him to stay at home looking after his daughter while Rachel films Countdown at Media City in Salford.

Pasha and Maven walk her to work for three days a week – where she films 15 episodes – then dad and daughter go to the park.

Fatherhood, he says, requires your complete attention, one of the reasons why he bowed out of Strictly Come Dancing after the 2018 season. One of the highlights was partnering Rachel on the show in 2013 – that’s how they met. Another was winning the coveted Glitterball trophy with Caroline Flack the following year.

The two became good friends, and her suicide in February 2020 devastated him.

Pasha said: “She was fun and bubbly and a much better dancer than she believed, particularly at the beginning. But the closer we got to the finals I could see her come to the realisation that she was a force to be reckoned with.

“I’d stayed in contact with her,” he says, “so the news came as a terrible shock. What happened was so sad, and that sadness never really goes away. I try to remember the happy times.”

There are plenty of happy times ahead. Not only is baby No2 on the way, but Pasha will be back on stage in the high-octane dance show Here Come The Boys.

Appearing with him will be Strictly stalwarts, Aljaz Skorjanec and Graziano Di Prima, former favourite Robin Windsor, celebrity contestant Karim Zeroual and Strictly’s Nadiya Bychkova.

After many false starts triggered by the pandemic, the show will enjoy a brief run at the London Palladium from May 24. Pasha, who emigrated from Russia when he was 20, said: “Dancing at such an amazing theatre will be like a dream come true.

“I love being on stage in front of a live audience. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the smiles on their faces.

“But I’m philosophical. I couldn’t dance because the theatres were closed [due to Covid]. There was nothing I could do about that, so I didn’t torture myself.

“In the meantime, I had a beautiful baby girl who was growing up before my eyes. I really couldn’t complain.” After Here Come The Boys, what next?

Pasha won Strictly with Caroline Flack

“I’m now in my 40s so I can see myself getting more involved in choreography for dance shows and perhaps West End musicals.

“I’m working on two right now. But I have to be realistic. I’m not a spring chicken.”

However, he is a great advocate, he says, of living in the present. “So I have the Palladium, my beautiful daughter and wife and the prospect of a new baby.

“You’re talking to a happy man.”

And the Oscar goes to… Boxing champ Roy Jones Jr. ‘willing to fight Oscar De La Hoya’ in latest vintage comeback bout

Boxing icons Roy Jones Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya could be set for a clash in the ring after Jones’ trainer, Alfy Smith, indicated his man is more than willing to spoil the The Golden Boy’s recently-announced comeback.

Former six-division champ De La Hoya revealed this week that he is to make his return to the sport in July for the first time since a 2008 shellacking at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, and Jones – fresh from his own ring comeback last November in a veteran matchup against Mike Tyson – has thrown his hat into the ring to be the man to challenge him.

Jones, a boxing legend in his own right, fought Tyson to an eight-round draw last November in a bout which proved to be a massive success for all involved, with some estimates placing the pay-view-view proceeds somewhere north of $ 80 million – a figure which is even more impressive given that there was no live gate due to Covid-19 restrictions.

And if it seems as if this has helped provide some motivation for De La Hoya’s own return, Jones’ trainer says that his man will be happy to meet him in the center of the ring on July 3.

I spoke to Roy today and he is feeling great – and is willing to fight Oscar De La Hoya,” said Alfy Smith.

I know that they never got to fight based off weight classes before, but now would be the perfect time to give the fans a great fight that they’d thought they would get to see.

De La Hoya has one of the greatest left hooks in boxing history, Roy has a devastating hook as well. We shall see who will be the real ‘Captain Hook’.”

News of the potential fight wasn’t greeted with the waves of enthusiasm Smith might have expected, however.

Why can’t these [Hall of Fame] guys just stay retired?” asked one boxing fan on social media, while another described the idea as a “circus act”. “Just isn’t really that interesting watching 50-odd-year-old guys fighting.”

Hell no,” wrote another. “Roy Jones needs to know when to STOP. He disappointed the fans against Tyson last time. We don’t want to see his old ass in the ring ever again.”

Jones had been linked to a fight with former UFC champion Anderson Silva but ‘The Spider’ has since agreed terms to box another former ring icon, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, in June, leaving Jones with an opening in his calendar – one that Smith thinks De La Hoya could more than adequately fill.

The fans all over the world love Roy Jones Jr and Oscar De La Hoya,” Smith continued. “This is a great fight, an exciting match-up where you would only dream it up in a video game. Now we have a chance to make it a reality.

Roy is still active and training every day, he’s in tremendous shape and his speed is still crisp.”

One sticking point, however, could be the weight that any prospective fight might take place at.

Jones tipped the scales at a career-high 210lbs for his November showdown with Mike Tyson and while De La Hoya is clearly no longer in the fighting shape he was in his prime, his latter career saw him compete at the middleweight limit of 160lbs.

Still, though, in days of yore it was often said that ‘styles make fights’. But in this brave new world of boxing in 2021 it appears that the maxim should be modified somewhat.

‘Checkbooks make fights’ sounds about right.

Floyd Mayweather ‘to work with Anthony Joshua’ ahead of Tyson Fury fight – and claims he’ll make $100 MILLION from Logan Paul bout

Floyd Mayweather has offered a helping hand to Anthony Joshua as he prepares for his world heavyweight title unifier against Tyson Fury, with the American ring icon also claiming he could earn $ 100 million from his own next bout.

The news broke on Monday that Joshua and Fury had finally both put pen to paper on a contract for a blockbuster double-header, with the first fight potentially coming in June or July at an as yet undetermined location.

The bout will see Joshua put his WBA, WBO and IBF titles on the line against unbeaten WBC and lineal world champion Fury.
Also on rt.com Signed, sealed & delivered: Contract for blockbuster Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua showdown is DONE, promoter says
As Joshua, 31, tunes up for the contest he can count on the advice of former five-weight world champion Mayweather.

Speaking on Rob Moore’s ‘The Disruptive Entrepreneur’ YouTube show, Mayweather revealed that he and Joshua were “on the regular” and that he was ready and willing to step in to help the Londoner.

“I look forward to working with Anthony Joshua real soon, we communicate all the time, we talk all the time,” said Mayweather, who hung up his gloves after defeating UFC star Conor McGregor in 2017 to improve to 50-0.

Mayweather added that he was not on such close terms with Fury, but nonetheless praised him as a “great guy.”

“I’ve met Tyson Fury on a few occasions, great guy, very interesting, after the fight I like to see him sing,” Mayweather said.

“I haven’t seen him fight a lot of times, I’ve seen him fight probably only twice. I’ve only seen Tyson Fury fight twice, against Deontay Wilder.”

Fury, 32, has won 30 of his 31 professional bouts, drawing the other fight against America’s Deontay Wilder.

‘The Gypsy King’ went on to defeat Wilder in February of 2020, which was his last appearance in the ring and saw him capture the WBC title.

Joshua’s sole defeat in 25 professional contests came when he was shocked by underdog Andy Ruiz Jr in New York in June of 2019 – a loss he avenged 6 months later.

Joshua’s last outing was against mandatory IBF challenger Kubrat Pulev in London in December, with the Brit stopping his Bulgarian rival in the ninth round.

Mayweather was pictured ringside at that contest and also caught up with the Brit after the bout.

Discussing the match-up with Fury, Mayweather said the fact that Joshua had tasted defeat before could work in his favor.

“Anthony Joshua has a lot of experience, Tyson Fury as well has a lot of experience. But I think with Anthony Joshua losing a fight, that helped him become stronger,” said the 44-year-old known as ‘Money’.

“But it’s a very intriguing match-up, you can never say what’s going to happen in the sport of boxing. Both guys are great competitors. Like I say, me and Anthony Joshua talk on the regular, so I look forward to working with Anthony Joshua.”
Also on rt.com ‘The deal could go away’: Questions raised about Fury-Joshua mega-fight as insider reveals contracts could EXPIRE in 30 days
Mayweather’s pledge to help Joshua is not the first time he has offered his ring know-how to one of Fury’s rivals.

Back in March of 2020, Mayweather said he could “teach” heavyweight rival Wilder how to beat the 6ft 7in Fury, should the pair meet a third time.

When asked who he would put his money on in the Joshua-Fury contest, Mayweather dodged the question outright, but suggested his previous comments gave a clear indication of who he favored.

“Well you just asked me that, but you already asked me in a different way, so I already answered that,” said the ring legend.

Mayweather himself is set to step between the ropes for an exhibition bout with YouTuber Logan Paul, 25, later this year – although the contest has already been postponed once after being pushed back from its original date of February 20.

The delay was supposedly due to issues over the agreement between the pair, although some reports claimed it was down to a lack of interest. A new date has not been set.

In the same YouTube interview with Rob Moore, Mayweather claimed he could make “$ 100 million or more” from the fight – which would be more than taking on a career fighter.

“Look up how many followers Logan Paul has on social media,” Mayweather said.

“Me and Logan Paul or a YouTuber can go out and make nine figures.”
