Norway’s women’s handball team fined €1,500 for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms

Norway condemns ‘ridiculous’ €1,500 fine for their women’s beach handball team after punishment for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms is confirmed

  • The Scandinavians wore shorts instead of regulation bikinis in Sunday’s match
  • Officials fined the team 1,500 euros, or 150 euros per player over the breach
  • The women’s team must wear bikini bottoms to certain measurements stipulating they must have ‘a close fit’, while male handball players wear shorts
  • The issue of clothing has been debated in beach sports circles for several years
  • In a reverse, two German beach volleyball players boycotted a Qatar tournament earlier this year after they were initially told they could not wear bikinis

Norway’s women’s beach handball team has been fined after the players refused to wear bikini bottoms in a match, instead competing in non-regulation shorts.

The Disciplinary Committee of the European Handball Federation (EHF) on Monday fined the team 1,500 euros (£1,300), or 150 euros (£130) per player.

The fine comes after they wore shorts – instead of the bikini bottoms required by International Handball Federation’s (IHF) rules – in their bronze-medal match loss to Spain at the European Beach Handball Championship in Bulgaria on Sunday.

Norwegian officials reacted angrily to the news on Tuesday.

‘It’s completely ridiculous,’ Norway’s Minister for Culture and Sports, Abid Raja, tweeted after Monday’s ruling. ‘What a change of attitude is needed in the macho and conservative international world of sport.’

Eirik Sordahl, the president of the Norwegian Volleyball Federation, told national news agency NTB: ‘In 2021, it shouldn’t even be an issue.’

Before the sanction, the Norwegian handball federation said on Monday it was ready to pay the fine after the women’s team knowingly defied official regulations.

‘Of course we would pay any fine,’ Norwegian Handball Federation president Kare Geir Lio told AFP news agency on Monday. ‘We are all in the same boat,’ he added.

Norway’s handball player Katinka Haltvik, quoted by public broadcaster NRK, also said ahead of the fine that the team would happily pay it.

It was expected the team would only be fined 50 euros (£43) per player, meaning the fine is 1,000 euros more than first anticipated.

Clothing has long been an issue in beach sports, with some women players finding bikinis degrading or impractical.

While bikinis have not been compulsory for beach volleyball players since 2012, IHF rules state ‘female athletes must wear bikini bottoms’ and that these must have ‘a close fit’, be ‘cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg’ and a side depth of no more than 10 centimetres.

Male players wear shorts.

Ahead of the European Championship, Norway approached the European Handball Federation to ask for permission to play in shorts, but were told that breaches of the rules were punishable by fines.

They complied, until their last match.

‘The most important thing is to have equipment that athletes are comfortable with,’ Lio said, adding that ‘it should be a free choice within a standardised framework.’

A Norwegian motion to amend the current rules will be discussed by the bodies in the coming months.

‘The EHF is committed to bring this topic forward in the interest of its member federations, however it must also be said that a change of the rules can only happen at IHF level,’ EHF spokesman Andrew Barringer said in an email.

In a reverse of the situation earlier this year, German beach volleyball stars Karla Borger and Julia Sude said they would boycott a tournament in Qatar, saying it is ‘the only country’ where players are forbidden from wearing bikinis on court.

‘We are there to do our job, but we are being prevented from wearing our work clothes,’ Borger told a radio station at the time.

‘This is really the only country and the only tournament where a government tells us how to do our job – we are criticising that.’

The Middle Eastern country hosted the FIVB World Tour event, but strict rules about on-court clothing had led to world championships silver medallist Borger and her doubles partner Sude shunning the event.

But in a major U-Turn, the Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) said there would be ‘no restrictions’ on players wearing bikinis.

Female players had been asked to wear shirts and long trousers rather than the usual bikinis, a rule which the world beach volleyball federation FIVB said is ‘out of respect for the culture and traditions of the host country’.

Qatar is a conservative Islamic country in which women are expected to dress conservatively, however the large numbers of foreign workers and bids to boost tourism means adherence is somewhat patchy.

‘Capable and independent’: Kate Middleton shows ‘decisiveness’ by wearing £20,000 ring

Kate Middleton has worn all types of jewels ranging from royal tiaras to simple necklaces. The wife of Prince William has been seen wearing a pricey gold ring that is not part of the Royal Family collection.

Aside from the jewels with a lot of royal significance, the Duchess has other rings which appear to be from her private collection.

This includes a citrine stone ring which could cost a huge sum of money, Ben Johnson Managing Director at Miltons Diamonds claimed.

“The ring looks like a very large citrine stone to me,” he said.

“Judging by the size of it could be worth anything from £5,000 up to £20,000.”

DON’T MISS

The mother-of-three has donned the ring for a number of events in recent years.

However, it may have been in her rotation well before she married Prince William.

Ben continued: “Media reports have suggested that this ring is a new addition to the Duchess of Cambridge’s collection, but there is proof she owned it already, as she was photographed wearing it on a night out with Pippa in 2008.

“If the Duchess did own this prior to her marriage, perhaps she has rekindled a love for her own pieces.

“It is widely claimed that the citrine crystal emanates optimism and can be used to direct personal will and decisiveness.

“This would explain the motivation behind Kate’s decision to wear it on occasions when she is not accompanied by the Duke of Cambridge, attending events on her own terms.

“She is an experienced royal now, capable and independent.”

The royal line of succession – who outranks who?

The line of succession to the British throne dictates the order in which each member of the Royal Family would ascend to the throne.

It is also seen as a ranking of importance with the head of the line, the Queen, taking the place of ruler.

Older children come before younger children. Traditionally boys came before girls, but this law was changed on March 26, 2015 before the birth of Prince William’s first child.

Incredibly, Catholics are still excluded from the line of succession, as are children born outside of wedlock.

The royals, who usually stick to a strict protocol when appearing in public, often arrive at events in ascending order of importance, with the most important royal arriving last.

Prince Charles, 72, is currently first-in-line to the British throne, followed by Prince William, 39, his oldest son.

Then comes Prince William’s children, George, seven, Charlotte, six, and Louis, three, and they are followed by Prince Harry, 36. Prince Harry is succeeded by his son Archie Harrison, born in May 2019.

Queen Elizabeth gives nod to Germany wearing special emerald brooch to meet Angela Merkel

The monarch appeared to complete her look wearing a pair of nude coloured tights.

She also dressed up the ensemble with pieces from her enviable jewellery collection.

Queen Elizabeth II is rarely seen without a brooch and is thought to have a collection of nearly 100 brooches.

The monarch has been known to send messages with the pieces that she chooses to wear.

DON’T MISS

This is something she is thought to have done today while meeting the Chancellor of Germany.

The 95-year-old sported the Cambridge Emerald Cluster Brooch without the usual pendant.

The jewel has special significance as it was won by Princess Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge in a charity lottery in Germany.

This happened in the early 19th century and the jewel has stayed within the Royal Family.

She finished the look wearing her favourite closed toe black pumps.

Queen Elizabeth II has worn the same black shoes for 50 years and they are handmade by Anello & Davide of Kensington.

Angela Merkle opted for a blue button up coat for the meeting.

She wore it with a pair of loose fitting navy trousers.

Does not wearing a bra cause sagging? A doctor gives her opinion

Some people prefer to go braless at night because it is more comfortable to do so, and very little research has been done on whether women should wear a bra at night.

Dr Lee commented: “Those who would be likely to derive the most benefit from wearing a bra at night are women with larger breasts, or breast pain, who generally benefit from firm breast support.

“If wearing a bra at night helps relieve breast discomfort, then it would seem sensible to continue.”

However, there may be a small increased risk of skin irritation, and/or hyperpigmentation, as the constant friction from wearing the bra can stimulate the production of the skin pigment melanin, and lead to skin spots or uneven skin tone.

Wendy Williams Interrupts Mike Esterman’s Live Interview To Give Him A Kiss While Wearing A Bathrobe

Mike Esterman chatted with FOX 5 correspondents in Washington, D.C. about his relationship with Wendy Williams, who made a surprise appearance!

Wendy Williams‘ romance with Mike Esterman appears to be going very well! The entrepreneur joined correspondents from FOX 5 in Washington, D.C. to dish about his ongoing relationship with the daytime talk show host, 56. “She came down to see what my world is about,” Mike gushed of Wendy making the trip to Maryland. “So, of course, we had to show [her] some good staple food items,” he continued.

Just then, as Mike pondered where she could be, Wendy, who was wearing a luxurious bathrobe, strode just behind him and caressed his head with her hand before giving him a smooch! “Sorry about that intrusion,” Mike joked with the correspondents, who absolutely loved Wendy’s sweet cameo during the interview. As Mike discussed the various food spots the couple has been hitting up, Wendy appeared once again, just passing by and giving Mike some love taps on the shoulder. “She’s wandering,” Mike joked.

Mike and Wendy have seriously been having a total blast together, as evidenced by The Wendy Williams Show host’s Instagram posts. Only five days ago, the TV personality shared a photo of herself riding along in the car with Mike. “Mr. Esterman is in the building!!” Wendy captioned the photo. Of course, there was more where that post came from.

Wendy posted again that day and shared a selfie of herself in Mike’s car at an auto shop. “His car had an appointment,” she explained in the caption to her post. “I’m along for the ride. I’m just enjoying my PRIVATE life & the love for our show,” she sweetly wrote. Wendy, who divorced ex-husband Kevin Hunter Sr. in 2020 after more than 20 years of marriage, and Mike have been going strong since Mike was crowned the winner of Wendy’s “Date Wendy” segment.

Mike quickly traveled to New York City in early March, and the two seriously hit it off. “I was thinking, ‘I really like him and he likes me.’ My heart broke when he left. I walked him to the elevator and waited for the doors to close,” Wendy revealed of their date. Fans cannot wait to see what the future holds for these two!

In addition to green, blonde, and red, Iggy has sported pink[4], yellow, and even purple hair on occasions in the past and we have to admit that she looked wonderful in every single shade! The talented mother is known for not just her cool music, but also her eye-catching style, so it’s no surprise that she would show off all kinds of different looks on a consistent basis. Robert Rinder left 'in shock' after being mugged by 'three boys wearing balaclavas'

Robert Rinder, 42, took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to share the terrifying news that he had been mugged and had his phone stolen out of his hands by three boys wearing balaclavas. The star of ITV’s court revealed the boys “laughed” at him as he shouted for them to “drop it”.
Robert sent out a plea to anyone who may have seen or knows anything about the suspects, offering a financial reward if they are found.

Posting to his social media, he penned: “I’ve just had my phone grabbed out my hands by 3 boys wearing balaclavas on bikes (Finchley Road & Canfield gardens).

“They laughed as I shouted to drop it.”

The telly Judge admitted he’s been left in shock but was feeling lucky to be covered by insurance so he can replace his phone.

A sixth fan snapped: “Find these horrible specimens try them in my court, this shows its not just women that are not safe on streets no one is safe walking the streets of our country. It’s wrong and government MUST do more. Fighting fire with fire is not right but sometimes its the only law they know.”

Support from Robert’s fellow celebrity pals began to pour in, as singer Aled Jones penned: “Hope you’re ok and sending love.”

His ITV colleage Ranj Singh, also wished him well: “Oh no!! Hope you’re ok love!!”

‘Does her mother know she’s wearing that?’ Olympic champ Duhamel says she LOVES Tuktamysheva, but calls Shcherbakova ‘sickly’

With the world figure skating championships just around the corner, former Canadian skater Meagan Duhamel weighed up the Russian trio’s chances to win gold in the ladies’ event in Stockholm.

The 2018 Olympic champion in the team event noted Russia’s dominance in women’s skating, sharing the widespread opinion that it will be the Russians that more than likely vie for gold.

Duhamel expressed her admiration for Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Alexandra Trusova, whose skating she says is powerful and dynamic – something she couldn’t say about the tournament’s favorite, Anna Shcherbakova, who, she says, looks sickly.

She looks so frail, I can’t enjoy watching her, she looks sickly,” Duhamel said about Shcherbakova, who won the national championship in December.

The two-time world champion added that she prefers more healthy-looking skaters, like Tuktamysheva, who has remained competitive over the years, proving that a figure-skating career can be quite long and successful.

I like Tuktamysheva. She is back at the world championships and she still does a triple axel. All these generations of Russian skaters are dying off and she’s like, ‘no, I’m still here, I’m still here.’

“I don’t care about her lack of choreography, that doesn’t even matter, I appreciate her resiliency, her determination, and her ability to just show up while all these girls drop like flies,” Duhamel said.

She also touched upon the topic of Tuktamysheva’s extravagant, sometimes shocking, style.

I’ve competed with her for many years… she was 14, I was 14, whenever she was at the grand prix circuit for the first time, she was at Skate Canada and she was wearing this miniskirt at the banquet.

“And I walked by and I was like, does her mother know she’s wearing that? That was my introduction to Tuktamysheva.

I love her… She’s real, she loves to skate, she loves it, she’s like a real person, whereas sometimes I don’t think the others are in that sense.

“She’s healthy, she looks healthy, she enjoys skating, she likes to push herself, she likes to train, she likes to compete. She thrives on this, whereas we see some of these other girls just looking so miserable, looking very unhealthy,” the former skater added.

Talking about Russia’s quad-jumping prodigy Duhamel admitted her progress since switching to Evgeni Plushenko noting that her basic skating skills, including footwork and edge quality have improved.

I love her [Trusova] as well… I love her fighting spirit and she’s fearless. I really like her energy… Trusova is strong, like, she has muscles, she’s strong, maybe this is just her natural power on the jumps or maybe it’s something that was enforced through her new coaching change… When she doesn’t skate great, she still seems happy,” she said.

The women will perform short programs on Wednesday, and the medalists will be awarded two days later after the free routines.
