Weight loss: Michael Mosley recommends eating fermented foods to slim – ‘I do it!’

Michael Mosley explained: “I make my own sauerkraut and kimchi and we also make kombucha.”

Recently, he shared some tips with Express.co.uk on how to stay motivated while following an intermittent fasting diet or any kind of weight loss plan.

Dr Mosley highlighted that in order to succeed, it is essential to get support from friends and family. 

“There is a huge amount of research and evidence supporting the idea that if you want to lose weight, it is really, really important that you have the support of your friends, your family, or some other wider community. Everyone experiences ups and downs in life, and as long as you have support and someone you can turn to, then you’re much more likely to succeed,” he told Express.co.uk.

Boiled egg diet ‘not sustainable long-term’ but will promote weight loss

Despite its name, the boiled egg diet does not consist of eating exclusively eggs. However, it claims consuming three hard-boiled eggs a day can promote weight loss. The diet recommends at least two eggs for breakfast and eggs for lunch or dinner. Lean proteins such as skinless white meat and fish are also allowed after breakfast, as well as non-starchy vegetables including celery and onions. However, fruit should be limited and only small amounts of fat from foods such as mayonnaise are allowed.

Exercising on the diet is not compulsory, but is encouraged.

Speaking about the fad to Women’s Health, Erin Palinski-Wade, RDN said: “This is a version of a low-calorie, low carb diet that will promote weight loss.

“But [it] will not be sustainable long-term and does not provide your body with balanced nutrition.”

The NHS describes eggs as a nutritious source of protein, as well as Vitamin D,A,B12, B2, folate and iodine.

Despite its benefits, yolks are high in cholesterol, and the boiled egg diet promotes eating more than some bodies recommended.

Having too much cholesterol in your body can block your blood vessels and increase your likeliness of developing heart problems or having a stroke.

Heart UK – the cholesterol charity – says eating “three to four eggs a week should be fine”.

However, the Heart Foundation warns those at high risk of heart disease should eat no more than three eggs per week.

The Heart Foundation explained: “Dietary cholesterol [i.e. eggs] has little impact on blood cholesterol levels within the context of a diet lower in saturated fat.

“However, dietary cholesterol and saturated fat act synergistically.

“Intakes of dietary cholesterol higher than 300mg/day were a more important determinant of total and LDL cholesterol when saturated fats accounted for more than 15 per cent of total energy intake.”

Both organisations say it is “more important” to limit the amount of saturated fat consumed, rather than the number of eggs.

This is why the NHS promotes eating eggs as “part of a healthy, balanced diet” but recommends cooking them without salt or fat – as frying eggs can increase their fat content by around 50 percent.

It therefore recommends boiling or poaching eggs and not adding salt – or scrambling them without butter and replacing cream with low-fat milk.

Adele weight loss: Singer shows off staggering transformation in new snap – diet plan

Adele, full name Adele Adkins, has notably slimmed down in the last couple of years. The results of her healthy weight loss transformation could be seen in the latest post on her Instagram page.

One said: “You are glowing!”

Another added: “You look so good” while a third stated: “You are beautiful!”

This is not the first time Adele has attracted attention with her looks.

The mother-of-one has clearly changed her lifestyle in recent years and reportedly shed around seven stone.

Adele joked about her transformation during an appearance on Saturday Night Live last year.

She said: “I know I look really, really different since you last saw me.

“But actually, because of all the Covid restrictions… I had to travel light and I could only bring half of me. And this is the half I chose.”

Apart from her comments on the late night sketch show, she has given very little away on how she slimmed down.

However, Camila Goodis, a personal trainer who worked with the singer, stated Adele would take part in Pilates.

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise which helps strengthen muscles and improve flexibility.

As well exercising regularly, Camila commented Adele’s results were “90 percent from diet”.

Some reports claim the 33-year-old followed the Sirt Food diet plan.

This is characterised by a list of approved foods and begins with a rigorous phase of drinking green juice and limiting calories.

Camila said: “The first week is intense, green juices and only 1,000 calories. She doesn’t look too thin – she looks amazing.”

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Daniel speculated Adele may have followed an intermittent fasting plan.

This involves eating all foods within a small time frame and fasting for the remaining hours of the day.

He claimed: “Based on the dramatic change it would seem an intermittent fasting diet along with an increase in exercise – possibly pilates or yoga – would have been the most likely plan followed by Adele.

“To assist her, she may have also used insights from a DNA test to reveal any dietary deficiencies or underlying health issues, perhaps around gut health and to understand what type of exercise and foods would work best for her, based on her genetics.”

Weight Loss: Surprise fitness phenomenon down to cheapest price yet

Surprise fitness phenomenon Ring Fit Adventure has been reduced to its lowest price.

Ring Fit Adventure – which was released back in 2019 – launched at a recommended retail price of £69.99.

While initial sales were steady, the health and fitness game grew in popularity when lockdown commenced in 2020.

Indeed, there was a time when global stock shortages made it nigh-on impossible to track down a copy.

Fortunately, Ring Fit Adventure is now back in stock, and at the low price of just £56.99 from Currys.

That’s cheaper than Amazon and Argos, where Ring Fit Adventure is available for £59.99.

The bundle contains the Ring Fit Adventure game, as well as a leg strap for tracking movement, and a special Ring-Con controller for resistance training.

And speaking of Ring Fit Adventure, Nintendo has dropped a big hint that a Switch expansion is in the works.

In a recent investors call, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa seemed to shut down talk about a Ring Fit Adventure sequel.

He did, however, suggest that the company was looking into ways to keep users engaged with the existing game.

“Since Ring Fit Adventure was released in October 2019, strong demand has continued both in Japan and overseas,” he said.

“It sold 7.38 million units globally during the fiscal year ended March 2021, and cumulative sales have exceeded 10 million units. The title is popular also in the Asia region including Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, even though Nintendo’s main business regions are Japan, the U.S and Europe.

“With regard to future developments, I cannot disclose specific plans, but we would like to take various initiatives so many people continue to play this title.”

Ring Fit Adventure is a fitness-themed, turn-based role-playing game featuring a body building dragon and a ton of monsters.

With the right Joy-Con housed in the new Ring-Con accessory and the left Joy-Con tucked into a Leg Strap, players explore 20 different worlds and battle various monsters using “Fit Skills”.

Split into arms, legs, abs and yoga stretches, “Fit Skills” are individual and unlockable exercises that serve as your special moves and attacks. So instead of casting a fire spell, for example, players might damage an enemy by performing a plank.

The Ring-Con is kind of like a versatile resistance band that can be used for various strength exercises, while the Leg Strap measures things like running speed, squat movements and knee raises.

Study Compares Isotretinoin Benefits in Different Weight Groups

Although adolescents with acne received different cumulative doses of isotretinoin based on their body mass index, there were no differences in acne clearance, relapse, and most side effects between normal-weight, overweight, and obese individuals, a retrospective cohort study found.

“Oral isotretinoin is among the most effective treatments for acne and is indicated for the treatment of severe acne or when first-line regimens have failed,” Maggie Tallmadge said at the annual meeting of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology. In adolescents with acne, isotretinoin is prescribed at a dose of 0.5-1 mg/kg per day “with the goal of reaching a cumulative dose of 120-150 mg/kg and clinical clearance with durable remission,” she said. “Most providers do not prescribe a daily dose over 80 mg due to perceived increased risk of side effects, including xerosis, cheilitis, liver dysfunction, and acne flare. However, many adolescents weigh over 80 kg and are therefore effectively underdosed, prolonging treatment time and possibly increasing the risk of side effects due to prolonged therapy.”

To evaluate differences in treatment courses among normal-weight, overweight, and obese adolescents, and the efficacy and safety of treatment, Tallmadge, a third-year medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and colleagues completed a retrospective chart review of 550 dermatology patients at Children’s Wisconsin, also in Milwaukee, who completed at least 2 months of isotretinoin treatment for acne when they were between the ages of 10 and 24, from November 2012 to January 2020. They collected data on age, weight, height, daily dose, cumulative dose, time to acne clearance, side effects, and acne recurrence after treatment, and classified patients as normal weight, overweight, or obese based on their body mass index for age percentile.

Of the 550 patients, 367 (67%) were normal weight, 101 (18%) were overweight, and 82 (15%) were obese. The median age of those in the normal-weight and overweight groups was 16, and was 15 in the obese group.

There was were significant differences in the median cumulative dose in each weight group: 143.7 mg/kg for normal-weight patients, 138.2 mg/kg for overweight patients, and 140.6 mg/kg for obese patients (P < .001).

“Despite achieving different cumulative doses, there was no difference in acne clearance, relapse, and most side effects among the three [body mass index] cohorts,” Tallmadge said. “Thus, it appears that current treatment strategies may be appropriate for overweight and obese adolescents.”

The proportion of patients with acne clearance did not differ significantly among the three groups of patients: 62% who were in the normal weight range, 60% who were overweight, and 59% who were obese had clearance of facial acne with treatment (P = .84).

Of patients whose treatment course was completed by the time of data collection, the proportion with acne recurrences was similar between the three groups: 25% of normal-weight patients, 27% of overweight patients, and 35% of obese patients (P > .05). Of patients whose treatment course was completed by the time of data collection, there was no significant differences in acne recurrence: 25% of normal-weight patients, 27% of overweight patients, and 35% of obese patients.

However, the proportion of patients reporting headaches differed significantly between the groups: 29% of normal-weight patients, compared with 40% of both overweight and obese patients (P = .035). The researchers also observed a significant positive correlation between increased BMI and increased triglyceride and ALT levels during treatment (P < .001 for both associations), yet no elevations required clinical action.

Funding for the study was provided by the MCW Medical Student Summer Research Program and the American Acne & Rosacea Society.

Harry Potter star claims she was ‘treated differently’ after gaining weight

After ten years in cinemas, the Harry Potter franchise was brought to an end with an epic two-parter Deathly Hallows event. The franchise is still one of the most successful film series of all time, grossing over $ 7.7 billion at the box office. Unfortunately for the actor who played Lavender Brown, the experience of filming the final two movies was not always happy.

Jessie Cave first played Lavender in the franchise’s 2009 instalment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

The young witch was the first love interest of Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) prompting her return for the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

In a new interview, Cave revealed: “I gained a lot of weight after doing Harry Potter, just because I wasn’t starving myself, And I was growing up and that’s just what happens.”

When she returned to film the Deathly Hallows movies, she said: “I was treated like a different species.”

Cave continued: “It was horrible. It was probably more me and my insecurity, knowing that I wasn’t fitting into the same size jeans, but it wasn’t a time where actresses were any bigger than a size eight.

“And in the previous film I had been, and now I was a size 12. So that was horrible. It was a really uncomfortable experience.” (Via The Independent)

Reflecting on the experience, she added: “But you get a bit bigger, or you’re not as relevant, and it goes off, and you have to make your way in the dark.

“I definitely felt invisible when I gained a little bit of weight. And since then, it’s made me have weird issues with weight and work.”

There is still a possibility Cave will return to the big screen in the Harry Potter franchise, however.

Earlier this year The Hollywood Reporter spoke with WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar about the future of the HP series.

Discussing the films, the outlet said: “On the movie front, there’s talk Warner Bros could be developing a new tentpole based on the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play.

“Discussion about possible sequels for Harry Potter — whose rights Warner Bros. controls along with creator J.K. Rowling — came as Kilar was talking about the creative fortunes going forward for Warner Bros.”

Express.co.uk also spoke with Harry Potter producer Lionel Wigram who revealed: “Whatever [JK Rowling] wants, as far as I’m concerned, is right.

“I think [Cursed Child] would make a great movie. Maybe at some point she’ll be ready to do that. I think it’s got a wonderful, long, theatrical run…it works brilliantly as a piece of theatre.

“I love the fact that there’s another aspect of the Harry Potter world which is completely different from everything else. I think it’s very special as it is and there will be a time when she’s maybe ready to do it [as a movie].”

Diabetes type 2: A ‘superior’ weight loss drug lowers high blood sugar

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) confirmed that semaglutide increases insulin secretion by binding to, and activating, the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor. Semaglutide also suppresses glucagon secretion and slows gastric emptying, meaning those who take it feel fuller for longer. Other side effects of the medication may include: constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, fatigue, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

New research – published in The New England Journal of Medicine – shows that tirzepatide achieved superior results compared to semagutide.

In the 40-week trial, tirzepatide lowered blood sugar levels more than 1mg injectables of semagutide in people with type 2 diabetes.

Participants who had the highest dose of tirzepatide lost 12.4kg compared to 6.2kg for those on semaglutide.

Knowing that obesity is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes, and that remission can be achieved via weight loss, the researchers are very excited about the results.

Dr Kunal Gulati – a leader in diabetes care at Lilly, Northern Europe (who research and develop innovative medicines) – is chuffed with the “meaningful” results.

“As a leader in diabetes care, Lilly is proud to be researching and developing solutions that can lead to meaningful HbA1C [blood sugar] reductions,” he said.

A 15mg dose of tirzepatide lowered blood sugar levels, on average, by -2.46 percent.

Even a 5mg dose of tirzepatide lowered blood sugar levels by around -2.09 percent.

If you’re concerned you might have diabetes, the symptoms to look out for include:

  • Peeing more than usual, particularly at night
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Feeling very tired
  • Losing weight without trying to
  • Itching around your penis or vagina, or repeatedly getting thrush
  • Cuts or wounds taking longer to heal
  • Blurred vision.

Having high blood sugars can damage blood vessels, leading to further health complications.

This is why it’s so important to lower blood sugar levels, and to take any medication that is prescribed to you, including semaglutide.

Jason Manford opens up about weight loss after being stunned into action: 'I get a buzz'

Jason Manford, 40, openly admits he’s never been the slimmest bloke on the block, and who cares. But the comedian revealed he was left shocked after stepping on the scales last year and seeing he weighed 17st 5lb.

The sudden realisation came after his doctor also warned him he was obese a few years ago and after trying diet after diet, he’s finally found peace with his body, especially as he dropped almost a whopping 3st in a few months.

In a new interview, the funny man spoke about his weight loss journey and why he decided to change his life.

For years, he had been using his weight as the butt of his stand-up jokes, conscious that if he started losing the pounds then he would have to change his material.

Admitting he’s thought about his weight everyday of his adult life after being branded “the fat Michael Owen” during a comedy gig aged 17, Jason revealed to get to the point he has, makes him feel surprisingly good.

“[I never cried] about it, but gone upstairs and tried to put something on that doesn’t fit, or got out of breath chasing the kids,” he said of his past mind-set.

“To get to a point where I’m thinking about it in a positive way feels good.”

Having dropped down to 14st 10lb, the comedian said he “gets a bit of a buzz” seeing the figure on the scales tick down every week.

With some of his old jokes stating that Vimto and Jaffa Cakes should be included in our five a day, Jason used to be in a vicious battle repeatedly with diets, losing a couple of stone and then gaining it again.

“Often, caring about appearance can be seen as a female thing,” he continued to tell The Mirror.

“So, to see some of the men say ‘I’ve been struggling’ is moving.

“They can laugh about being the chunky one of their friends’ group, but actually they don’t like it and don’t want to be that person any more.”

He insists his weight hasn’t made him “sad”, but admits to feeling low and suffering a bit of anxiety earlier this year, worrying about work, his family and their health.

“There’s a presumption you’re on the telly and you’re fine, but like anyone, your problems are your problems,” he shrugged.

As of August, Jason will be back on the road as he begins his latest 180-date tour called Like Me. Minus fat jokes.

But he laughed that “only time will tell” whether he can still be funny as a thinner man.

“I’m not worried about going on tour and looking like an Adonis,” he chuckled, “That is never going to happen!”

Weight loss: Dr Michael Mosley on top foods to avoid to burn fat – 'cut out completely'

Weight loss is not easy to achieve with many diet plans offering results. Dr Michael Mosley listed a number of common foods dieters should try to avoid if hoping to burn fat.

Avoid snacking

The expert recommended getting food from substantial meals rather than eating throughout the day.

Snacking on sugary treats can stop fat burning, Dr Mosley explained.

He said: “Grazing keeps sugars up and stops fat burning.

“But if you must, eat a small handful of nuts or a small piece of cheese.”

Cut back on starchy foods

Slimmers should look out for foods high in sugar, including those with hidden sugars.

The expert continued: “Completely cut back on cakes, sweets, biscuits, crisps, fruit juices and soft drinks.

“These foods rapidly turn into sugar in your blood causing sugar spikes and weight gain – they are like the tip of the iceberg.

“Avoid most breakfast cereals. These are usually packed full of sugar,” he added.

“Oats are fine, as long as they are not the flavoured or instant sort.

“Also, avoid too many sweet tropical fruits including mango, pineapple, grapes, melon and bananas, as these are full of sugar.

“Instead, opt for berries, apples and pears. Try to have a maximum of two pieces of fruit a day and always eat the skin.”
