Prince Charles to refuse one of Philip’s dying wishes

Prince Charles will reportedly stop brother Edward becoming Duke of Edinburgh.

But the move from the Prince of Wales comes despite his dad Prince Philip’s wishes for when he died.

The Duke of Edinburgh is a title which can be passed from royal to royal.

And the former Duke of Edinburgh, who died aged 99 in April before being buried at St George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle, in front of 30 mourners, wanted his son Edward to take on the title in the event of his death.

But Charles is ready to block the move – because he wishes as future King to have a “slimmer monarchy”.

Edward mourned at the funeral alongside wife, Sophie, while Charles also attended, alongside Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

A source close to Charles said: “The Prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as it stands, and it is up to him what happens to the title. It will not go to Edward.”

“It isn’t just about whether Edward becomes Duke of Edinburgh by rite of passage or not, there have been discussions about the whole top tier of the Royal Family,” a source told the Daily Mail.

A royal aide told the newspaper: “It was probably human nature to transfer your affection to the youngest, who in the scheme of things will inherit nothing. It was why he wished Edward to have his title.”

“Put yourself in his shoes,” the aide told the Mail. “You have been consort and then [Charles] comes along and is suddenly the heir.”

UK’s Queen Elizabeth wishes England team good luck ahead of Euro soccer final

LONDON, (Reuters) – Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has sent a message to the England soccer manager to wish the team luck ahead of its most anticipated game since the 1966 World Cup final.

England are due to play Italy today in the Euro 2020 final at London’s Wembley Stadium, prompting excitement across the country, with beer sales soaring and special permission for children to start school late tomorrow.

Elizabeth wrote a letter to manager Gareth Southgate in which she recalled her memory of presenting the World Cup to England in 1966 and seeing the joy that brought.

“I want to… send my good wishes for tomorrow with the hope that history will record not only your success but also the spirit, commitment and pride with which you have conducted yourselves,” she wrote.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also wished the team good luck in a letter on Saturday. He congratulated them on what they have achieved so far and praised their teamwork and “sheer flair”.

“You have lifted the spirits of the whole country, and tomorrow we know you can lift that trophy too,” Johnson wrote.

“We are not just hoping or praying. We believe in you, Gareth, and your incredible squad. On behalf of the entire nation, good luck, have a great game – and bring it home!”

If England wins the tournament, there is speculation that Johnson could announce a national holiday to celebrate. A petition asking for a day off if the team win has gained more than 350,000 signatures.

While England have only once previously reached the final of a major tournament, this will be Italy’s 10th such final. In England’s favour, the 60,000-strong crowd will be overwhelmingly supporting the home nation.

Of the other nations in the United Kingdom, Scotland and Wales were knocked out in earlier stages of the tournament while Northern Ireland did not qualify.

Homeowners urged to 'make wishes clear' to mortgage broker to get best green mortgage deal

Sustainability is understandably a key consideration for many people, with some opting to divest from unsustainable investments, while others are urging pension providers to focus on sustainability. Green mortgages are a term many homeowners and prospective buyers may well have heard of, but what does it mean?
“A ‘green’ mortgage is usually just a product that might be cheaper in some way than a ‘normal’ mortgage product,” Nick Morrey, Product Technical Manager at John Charcol explains.

“It could have a lower interest rate or a lower fee or (in the case of Nationwide) a bit of extra cashback.

“To qualify for such a product there is usually a set of criteria that often centres around what the EPC rating is for the property being lent on.”

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Mr Morrey continued: “It is a good thing that lenders are trying to reward people looking to buy more energy efficient properties but the system is somewhat flawed as the EPC ratings required tend to be A or B and the vast majority of residential properties in the UK are C or below.”

He added: “So unless people are looking at a relatively newly built property it is unlikely they would qualify.

“And the costs of retro-fitting the energy saving measures are often so high that the saving on the mortgage/energy bills means it isn’t likely to pay for itself for quite some time.”

So, what do green mortgages mean for buyers?

Nick Morrey, Product Technical Manager at John Charcol, said: “It depends on the actual deals on offer.

DON’T MISS

“Brokers are experienced in comparing and assessing which deals offer the best value over the initial product term but consumers might not find that so easy.

“It is quite possible that they could get a cheaper deal that is so much cheaper they could make a monthly contribution to a green cause that is bigger than a ‘green’ deal would have given them.

“So it pays to shop around or make your wishes clear to a broker who can recommend various options to aid the decision process.”

When getting a green mortgage, there are some things to check, however.

However, the mortgage expert said that overhands are “very unlikely nowadays”.

“Also, offering a ‘green’ mortgage doesn’t necessarily mean that a lender has a terrific carbon footprint,” he warned.

And, according to Mr Morrey, those failing to check this could be faced with an unpleasant discovery once they’re locked into a deal.

He explained: “It isn’t easy for a non-manufacturing business to be carbon-neutral but some lenders take more steps towards this than others and you might want a green deal but be borrowing from a lender with a poor approach to carbon neutrality, which you might not discover until you are tied in to them meaning they are profiting from your mortgage but not helping the planet at all.”
