“Sterols and stanols. Find these in foods like nuts and grains, or you can buy them as supplements.

“They reduce the amount of cholesterol that your body absorbs from food. They’re also added to many foods, such as some margarines, orange juice, and yogurts.

“Experts recommend two grams a day to help lower LDL cholesterol for people who have high cholesterol.”

You could also lower your risk of high cholesterol by regularly taking garlic supplements.

Garlic’s health-boosting properties are believed to be caused by its high sulphur content, nutritionists have claimed.

The supplements could reduce total cholesterol in your body by up to 15 percent, scientists have revealed.

It specifically gets rid of ‘bad’ cholesterol, while leaving your ‘good’ cholesterol untouched.

High cholesterol may be caused by eating lots of fatty foods, or by not doing enough exercise.

Obesity, smoking, and drinking lots of alcohol, all contribute to your cholesterol levels.

Medication can help to keep your cholesterol levels in check, but it’s also important to stick to a healthy diet, and to do regular exercise.

Everyone should aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day, as well as 150 minutes of exercise every week.
