This Morning's Dr Chris reveals stark difference between coronavirus and Autumn hay fever

As he explained, autumnal hay fever symptoms are the same as summer hay fever symptoms.

Characteristic symptoms of hay fever include sneezing and itching, said Dr Chris said.

Coronavirus symptoms are quite distinct, however. You will experience a dry cough, fever, loss of smell and taste, he said.

As Dr Chris noted, these warning signs are quite separate from the common cold too.

One of the best defences is a barrier balm for your nose, said Dr Chris.

Tablets and antihistamines that don’t make you drowsy are also an effective deterrent, he said.

Nasal spray and eye drops may also provide some relief from may hay fever symptoms, noted Dr Chris.

A specific measure for autumn hay fever is to clear any mould or fungi that may gather around your house.

As Dr Chris explained, the difference between summer hay fever and autumn hay fever is the allergens.

As opposed to grass pollen, autumn hay fever pollen comes from various weeds, nettles and fungi in the air.

What to do if your hay fever persists

According to the NHS, you should see a GP if:

  • Your symptoms are getting worse
  • Your symptoms do not improve after taking medicines from the pharmacy.

As the health body explains, your GP might prescribe steroids.

Steroids, also called corticosteroids, are anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a range of conditions.

“If steroids and other hay fever treatments do not work, your GP may refer you for immunotherapy,” said the NHS.

This means you’ll be given small amounts of pollen as an injection or tablet to slowly build up your immunity to pollen.

As the NHS explains, this kind of treatment usually starts in the winter about three months before the hay fever season begins.
