Thorpe Park chaos: Police swarm park after ‘stabbing’ – two men arrested

Two men, both aged in their Twenties, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was “seriously injured” in an incident at the park teeming with visitors. Photos of the theme park showed police swarming a footbridge at the theme park and blocking visitors from crossing it.

Detective Inspector Andy Greaves, from Surrey Police, said: “I’m keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who has video footage of this assault.

“The two groups of people were close to the exit inside the park on the bridge when the assault took place.

“We’re still trying to establish what has happened, however I’d like to stress that this incident is not being treated as terrorism-related at the current time.

“Enquiries are ongoing to locate all those believed to have been involved.

“Officers will remain in the area for some time this evening and I’d like to thank Thorpe Park for their assistance and co-operation with our investigation”.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was called to the Thorpe Par at about 4.50pm following reports of a person with an abdominal injury.

His condition was described as serious.

One man named Tony Stone who was inside the park with his children said they were “upset” by the incident.

He told SurreyLive: “I’m here with my children who are very concerned and upset.

“We could see paramedics working on someone on the bridge. We have been told to come back in the park.”

In the clip, blood can be seen spattered on a pavement behind a police cordon.

Other visitors took to social media to express their concern.

One person said: “Rides closed everyone was leaving but they had to hold everyone back so rides have reopened while the incident is dealt with. (sic).”

“Stay safe everyone.”

In a statement, Thorpe Park Resort tweeted: “An incident took place at the Thorpe Park Resort today, where a guest was seriously injured by another guest.

“The health, safety and security of our guests is our number one priority and we have never had any incidents of this type in over 40 years of operating.

“The Resort’s fully trained security & medical staff were on scene within minutes & administered immediate care until emergency services teams arrived.

“We are co-operating fully with the Police & their ongoing investigations.

“We’d like to thank guests for their patience.”

One woman said officers had blocked her and fellow visitors from crossing the bridge.

She said: “Unreal day at Thorpe Park! Leaving the park now and friends and I are all okay but something went down here today.

“The police wouldn’t let any of us leave, they had a screen across the bridge which they’ve taken down, and had a police dog underneath the bridge.”

Another woman said: “What’s happening at Thorpe Park? They won’t let us leave!”
