Tony Bellew warns Dillian Whyte his boxing career “is on the line”

Dillian Whyte might have his career on the line in a rematch with Alexander Povetkin.

That is the view of former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew, who beat former world champion David Haye twice at heavyweight in 2017 and 2018.

Whyte put his Russian opponent down twice before he was brutally sent to the canvas in the fifth round, which handed him only his second professional defeat after being beaten by Anthony Joshua in 2015.

Although the Brit is desperate to secure a December rematch, which Eddie Hearn believes will go ahead, he has been warned to make the required adjustments.

Dillian Whyte was knocked out by Alexander Povetkin on Saturday evening

In a chat with talkSPORT Bellew said: “I think there’s adjustments that need to be made on his part and I’ll speak to him.

“He definitely needs to make changes and there’s just a few other little things he needs to learn.

“But I definitely believe Dillian Whyte will still get to the final destination and become a heavyweight champion of the world.

“Just the right opponents at the right time. We’ve gotta remember, 1,000 days he’s been waiting to challenge for the WBC world title.

“And for 800 of them days Deontay Wilder’s been the world champion – a man who didn’t want to face Dillian Whyte, didn’t wanna know. He was facing taxi drivers instead of facing Dillian Whyte.

“It’s wrong what’s been done to the lad, but he’s now in this very strange position where he’s gotta go into the rematch and his career is on the line.

“I believe Dillian will beat Povetkin. I think he needs to go in there and perform basically the same.

“Just, when you go in for the final finish, you’ve got to be alert and aware.”

In his interview after the bout, Hearn said: “We will lick our wounds and we will come back and move forward.”

Whyte then entered and asked: “Can we get a rematch in December?”

Hearn confirmed that he would, before Whyte added: “Yeah I’m good, it’s just one of those things where it landed.”

Before ending with: “It is what it is, rematch, it’s all good, lets go.”
