Trump accused of ‘witness tampering’ as he rips into ex-ambassador in impeachment hearing

Ms Yovanovitch, the former US Ambassador to Ukraine became the third person to testify against the Trump during the impeachment hearing into his dealings with the country’s President.  As the former ambassador gave her testimony, Trump tweeted attacking her credentials. 

The President stated: “Everywhere Marie Yovanovitch went turned bad.

“She started off in Somalia, how did that go?

“Then fast forward to Ukraine, where the new Ukrainian President spoke unfavourably about her in my second phone call with him.

“It is a U.S. President’s absolute right to appoint ambassadors.

“They call it ‘serving at the pleasure of the President.’

“The U.S. now has a very strong and powerful foreign policy, much different than proceeding administrations.

“It is called, quite simply, America First! With all of that, however, I have done FAR more for Ukraine.”

The two tweets were then read out to the former ambassador during her questioning as some accused Trump fo now pressuring the witness.

In response to Trump’s tweet, editor of Channel 4 News, Ben de Pear stated: “As this experienced and decorated diplomat gives measured evidence it seems the President of the United States is arguably undertaking witness intimidation from the highest office in the US via twitter.”

UK correspondent for Euronews, Vincent McAviney spoke of how the witness appeared to be “shaken” by the personal attack. 

He said: “This tweet is now being read in the #ImpeachingHearings to former Ambassador #MarieYovanovitch, a career, professional civil servant who has spoken passionately and confidently but now looks visibly shaken by the Presidents live attack as she testifies.”

Trump’s attack on the former ambassador comes after he also labelled San Francisco a “disgusting slum”.

Trump attacked the city following Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s – who represents the district – accusation that his actions amounted to “bribery”. 

Ms Pelosi said: “It’s perfectly wrong. It’s bribery.”

“The cover-up makes what Nixon did look almost small.”

In response, Trump released a brutal rant at the Democrat today. 

Trump said: “Nervous Nancy Pelosi, who should be home cleaning up the dangerous & disgusting slum she is making of her District in San Francisco, where even the filth pouring into the Pacific Ocean is rapidly becoming an environmental hazard, is getting NOTHING DONE.

“She is a Do Nothing Democrat as Speaker, and will hopefully not be in that position very long.

“Approve USMCA, which has been sitting on her desk for months!”

With the hearing entering day two, the White House has released the first call between Trump and Mr Zelensky, as reported by Sky News correspondent, Cordelia Lynch.

Moreover, it took place before the July conversation to which has been the focus of the impeachment inquiry.

Trump has continued to label the case as a witch hunt and a “hoax”.
