Mr Trump claimed his description of “love letters” to Mr Kim was sarcastic after John Bolton claimed the North Korean leader mocked the messages. Mr Trump has touted his “good relationship” with Mr Kim frequently since 2018, where the US President met with the North Korean leader in historic peace talks. Mr Bolton, Mr Trump’s former national security adviser, claimed in his book The Room Where It Happened Mr Kim found correspondence from the president funny. The letters followed US efforts to deescalate North Korea’s nuclear testing in 2018.
Mr Trump posted his bizarre defence of his letters to the North Korean leader on Twitter.
In the post, he described Mr Bolton as a “wacko” and called him a “jerk” for his comments on the letters.
Mr Trump said: “Just heard that Wacko John Bolton was talking of the fact that I discussed ‘love letters from Kim Jong Un’ as though I viewed them as just that.
“Obviously, was just being sarcastic. Bolton was such a jerk!”

Mr Trump previously touted his correspondence with Mr Kim in rallies and briefings, describing them as “beautiful letters”.
Speaking to a crowd in 2018 at an event in West Virginia, Mr Trump described how the pair “fell in love” through their talks.
He said: “I was really being tough, and so was he. And we would go back and forth.
“And then we fell in love, OK? No, really.
“He wrote me beautiful letters, and they’re great letters. We fell in love.”

In an interview after the release of his book, Mr Bolton suggested Mr Kim didn’t take correspondence with the President seriously, despite Mr Trump claiming their letters were an example of “deep friendship”.
He said to ABC News: “I don’t know any other explanation. I think Kim Jong Un gets a huge laugh out of this
“I mean, these letters that the president has shown to the press — off the record and whatnot, but I’ve been in the room when he’s done it — are written by some functionary in the North Korean Workers Party Agitprop Office.”
Mr Bolton went on to say regardless of the US and North Korea’s relationship, Mr Kim “is never gonna give up his nuclear weapons programme”.

Talks with North Korea began in 2018 over US fears from North Korea’ nuclear capabilities.
The 2018 Singapore summit saw uncharacteristic friendliness between the two leaders, after which Mr Trump declared North Korea were no longer a nuclear threat.
But this year North Korea stated it would begin expanding its nuclear programme.
A press statement from the North Korean Minister of Foreign affairs said two years of US diplomacy saw no achievements, and added: “Nothing is more hypocritical than an empty promise.”

Donald Trump news: John Bolton has also criticised Donald Trump’s alleged comments on dead soldiers being ‘losers’
Mr Bolton also recently took the President to task for his alleged comments on American soldiers being “losers” for dying or being captured.
The Atlantic reported Mr Trump said he thought dead soldiers were “losers” and “suckers” during a visit to a US military cemetery outside Paris in 2018
While Mr Bolton did not hear the President make the remarks, he said: “I have not heard anybody say, ‘Oh, that doesn’t sound like the Donald Trump I know’.”
Mr Trump strongly denied the reports, and said: “There is nobody feels more strongly about our soldiers, our wounded warriors, our soldiers that died in war than I do. It’s a hoax.”
