The Gypsy King has reached a two-fight agreement with Joshua for 2021, but first both men must come through respective bouts against Deontay Wilder and Kubrat Pulev next.
AJ is set to defend his unified titles against IBF mandatory challenger Pulev in December, while WBC champion Fury is hoping to lock horns with Wilder for a third time later this year.
If both men emerge victorious, the coast will be clear for two battles to crown an undisputed king of the division next year – especially after Dillian Whyte ’s shock knockout defeat against Alexander Povetkin last weekend.
Whyte, who was knocked out cold by Povetkin at Matchroom’s Fight Camp, only needed one more victory to become mandatory challenger for Fury’s WBC title.
His surprise slip-up means there will be no more obstacles preventing Fury and Joshua from going head-to-head should they retain their titles against Wilder and Pulev.
And ahead of their potential dust-up next year, Fury has poked fun at his British foe on social media.
The 32-year-old posted a photoshopped picture on Twitter that shows him laughing while taking Joshua to school.
In the mocked-up photo, Joshua is saying: “Where are you taking me?”
Fury replies: “To school, you bum”.
British boxing fans have been craving a mega-fight between the two ever since Joshua got his hands on the IBF title in 2016.
Now the dream matchup could become a reality if both men claim victory next time out.
If they do square off in 2021 as expected, Fury believes he will have a lot more to lose than Joshua.
“I’m a standalone Gypsy King giant ruling the division, ruling the roost,” he told BT Sport.
“I don’t need any of their money, I don’t need what they can bring to the table, but for the fans you want the biggest fight possible and the biggest fight out there now is me against Joshua.
“They have nothing to lose, they’ve already been knocked out and beat.
“I’m the only one who has got something to lose, that big 0 (no defeats) I’m carrying around with me.”
