More than 20 crews from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to tackle a blaze at Speedibake factory in the Lupset area of Wakefield at 1.17pm on Saturday. Thick smoke was seen rising from the bakery, which drifted over towards nearby Westgate Retail and Leisure Park, which is also near a Cineworld cinema and Frankie & Benny’s restaurant. An air ambulance was seen attending the fire at the factory, where there is also a risk of airborne aspestos.
West Yorkshire police tweeted: “Emergency services are currently in attendance at a building fire at Westgate Retail Park in Wakefield.
“Roads around the area are closed, people are being asked to avoid the area.
“No injuries have been reported.”
Shoppers also shared their shock at seeing the sky turn black this afternoon.

One resident tweeted: “Huge fire in Wakefield centre, most terrifying experience, thick black smoke, literally could not breathe.
“Drove next to the factory (before we realised the extent of the fire). Everyone stay away from the area.”
Former Wakefield Labour MP Mary Creagh tweeted: “Dramatic fire at Speedibake in Wakefield right now.
“Visited the doughnut line a couple of years back.

Another person said: “Huge amount of thick acrid smoke coming from Lupset a couple of miles away from here.
“I had to shut the windows as the smell was putrid.
“I hear a lot of fire engines racing to it as I speak.”

Many people reported shared videos of the smoke filling the air from many miles away.
Witnesses also said there were power cuts in the area and said they had been asked to remain in doors.
Nicky Harley wrote on Twitter: “Fire at Speedibake shuts down Wakefield city centre. Police evacuating the area.
“Bad day to move house.”

The fire brigade tweeted they are using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, large jets and aerial ladders.
They also said 75 percent of the bakery’s ground floor has been damaged in the fire.
Arriva Yorkshire buses have said police are diverting buses out of the city centre.
There are also road closures in place around the retail park.
