Washington Football Team's new name decision may take 18 months, Ron Rivera says 1

Ron Rivera may be head-coaching an NFL team without a nickname into the 2021 season. In an interview with “CBS This Morning’s” Gayle King on Friday, Rivera said that the rebranding of the Washington Football Team will take longer than expected.

“We’re not close to a decision,” Rivera told King.”The biggest thing we’ve learned is that this thing is going to take steps. This can’t happen automatically. We’re going to have to go through the process. We’re going to need to do a thorough background check on everything and it’s going to be a little harder than we anticipated.

“Truly, this is going to be a 16-to-18 month process to do it the right way.”

Rivera confirmed that the Washington Football Team will continue to sport burgundy and gold as the team’s primary colors, for now and in the future. The organization simply wants to choose a new name wisely, someting it can proudly take into “the next 100 years.”

King also asked Rivera about the recent Washington Post report in which 15 female employess accuse former members of the organization of sexual harassment and verbal use under owner Daniel Snyder. Rivera is confident there will be a culture change, both on and off the field.

“When these things came to light, we really had to look at ourselves and dive into it,” Rivera said. “Mr. Snyder has continued to do that.”

It’s been a whirlwind month for the Washington Football Team. For the team to become far removed from anything “Redskins,” it will take plenty of time.
