Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon defended Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood as the doctor was forced to apologise for ignoring her own social distancing coronavirus advice.  In a briefing on Sunday afternoon, Dr Catherine Calderwood said: “I have already issued a statement apologising unreservedly for travelling away from my home while restrictions were in place. As well as this weekend it is important to be clear that I was at my second home last week with my husband.

“I did not follow the advice I am giving to others, I am truly sorry for that.”

Despite her apology, ITV News’ Peter Smith attacked both Dr Calderwood and Ms Sturgeon for their handling of the situation during the briefing.

Mr Smith claimed people had lost faith in Dr Calderwood and she was not trusted anymore by the public.

He said: “The chief medical officer has flouted rules not once but twice now.

“People in this country are making personal sacrifices and you are speaking to people who have had to separate from their families and people who are losing their businesses over coronavirus.

“There are people who cannot attend funerals because they are putting faith in the message you and your Government are putting out.”

Speaking directly to Dr Calderwood he said:  “You may have the confidence of the First Minister but I would put it to you that the majority of this country has lost confidence in you over this issue.

“We need a leader, an expert that we can believe in.

“So why on Earth do you think you can really be the public face of a message to stay home, protect the NHS and save lives?”

Mr Smith also complained that the Scottish Government was sending out mixed messages on coronavirus.

He said: “The message the public is getting from her actions is that it is okay to go to the beach, holiday homes, to our caravans as long as we observe social distancing.

“That is clearly not the message your Government has been putting out, your message has been undermined.

“The mixed messages are frankly dangerous.

“So my question to you First Minister is how can you in good faith allow the chief medical officer to continue addressing the public?”

Ms Sturgeon replied: “The chief medical officer has said she complied with social distancing while being where she was.

“But that does not change the fact that she should not have been there.

” I know that and she knows that. It was wrong.

“There has been no attempt to excuse that and I want to be categorically clear about that.”
