Passports: Is it legal to have two UK passports? What are the penalties?

Travellers leaving the UK for vacations overseas need a passport in order to do so. The official identity document allows a person to pass through security and onto their flight, should it be valid. The passport should also be in good condition, with no pages missing, to allow a smooth passage on board an aircraft. Yet for some, who perhaps have dual nationality status, this means they have two passports.

Question marks have been raised over the legality of having multiple passports, particularly as the UK is in the midst of uncertain travel implications stemming from Brexit.

Britain is set to leave the EU on March 29, with the potential of a no deal Brexit still on the cards.

This could mean Britons need at least 15 months left on their travel document expiry date in order to make a trip.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Theresa May’s motion for confidence in her Brexit divorce deal was defeated in the House of Commons.

There will be a fresh vote on February 27.

In light of concern from some travellers, the issue of a Briton having more than one passport has arisen.

Legally, British nationals can possess two passports.

The second document is called a concurrent passport, and is fairly common for business partners to employ.

These can prove useful should a person wish to travel to countries which do not permit travellers who have a particular state’s stamp on their passport.

This scenario arises in Iran and Lebanon, regions which do not allow travellers with an Israeli passport stamp.

Having a second passport for the latter reason can be requested on the grounds of “incompatible countries”.

Meanwhile, those who travel often for work may need a second passport, if they are applying for multiple visas.

For a second passport, Britons need to fill in a standard passport application form and then add their existing passport number in the section marked Other Passports.

The applicant will also need a letter from their employer if they are applying for a second passport on business purposes.

To finalise the process, they will need to provide a full list of the countries they are travelling to.
