LYON 0-3 BAYERN MUNICH

FT: Done and dusted. Lyon did themselves proud but they came up against what appears to be an unstoppable Bavarian juggernaut in Bayern Munich. Hansi Flick’s side will play Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on Sunday. What a treat.

90: 15 goals in 9 Champions League games for Robert Lewandowski. That’s one more than the entire Lyon team have managed. Sorry if I’ve repeated myself but it’s just staggering. No wonder Bayern Munich are unhappy there is no Ballon d’Or this year.

88: GOAL! He’s got his goal! Robert Lewandowski has his 15th goal of the competition. It’s also his 55th of the season! The Poland international climbs above his marker and sends a bullet header past Anthony Lopes. He’s just class.

85: Well it looks like Lyon’s fairytale run is coming to a close. Still, beating Juventus AND Manchester City is quite an accomplishment for the Ligue 1 side. Not quite the ‘Farmers’ League’ people have accused it of being over the years. Full of talent.

83: Leon Goretzka has drilled one that’s surely heading for the top left-hand corner but his own teammate Thomas Muller blocks it! No smirks, no smile exchanged between the pair.

Thiago Alcantara and Leon Goretzka are replaced by Corentin Tolisso and fit-again Benjamin Pavard.

80: Disallowed! Philippe Coutinho wheels away in celebration… but the goal doesn’t stand. The Brazilian collects and finishes Thomas Muller’s pass beautifully but it looks like Leon Goretzka got the faintest of touches in an offside position.

79: I’ve already got my sights on Sunday’s final. Bayern Munich’s high line could really play into PSG’s hands, y’know. The pace of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe could cause some serious problems. Philippe Coutinho peels off the left channel and fires wide via a deflection in signature fashion.

76: Houssem Aouar has done his reputation no harm tonight. Lyon’s best player by a country mile. He skips past two Bayern defenders but his cross comes to nothing. On comes Philippe Coutinho for Serge Gnabry.

73: Another change for Lyon as 17-year-old Rayan Cherki replaces Fernando Marcal. Supposed to be the Bees Knees and was the second youngster player ever to play Champions League football behind the all-conquering Celestine Babayaro.

70: Just 20 minutes remaining on the clock and a comeback doesn’t look on the agenda. Bayern in control and holding a brace Lyon at arm’s length.

66: Kenny Tete and another former Arsenal youngster Jeff Reine-Adelaide replace Leo Dubois and Karl Toko Ekambi for Lyon. Rudi Garcia doesn’t have many options left.

63: Substitute Niklas Sule isn’t looking too comfortable. Could be carrying a knock and that’s a worry for Bayern Munich with Jerome Boateng off injured during the break. Anyway, Kingsley Coman replaces Ivan Perisic.

60: You have GOT to score that! Niklas Sule makes a mess of his clearance and that allows Houssem Aouar through down the left. He finds an unmarked Moussa Dembele inside the penalty area but he’s foiled by Manuel Neuer. Karl Toko Ekambi then sends a cross/shot wide.

57: Champions League semi-final? Feels more like a waltz in the park for Bayern Munich right now. Memphis Depay asks for a penalty but he’s got no chance of substitute Niklas Sule being penalised for handball. Marcelo registers Lyon’s first effort on target when heading the resulting corner at Manuel Neuer.

Moussa Dembele replaces Memphis Depay.

54: “Genuinely feel sorry for any winger up against Alphonso Davies. Impossible to outrun him, even with a 10-yard head start. Knows he can cheat going forward and still recover,” writes a colleague of mine on Twitter. He’s not wrong.

Miss! Speaking of Alphonso Davies… he slides a pass through to Ivan Perisic, who finds himself clean through on goal. He should make it 3-0 but tamely fires straight at goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

51: So what’s the plan for Lyon? Keep it tight, send on Moussa Dembele, hope to nick one back and stop Bayern from scoring the killer third? Good luck with that, lads.

48: I just looked at the Bayern substitutes. It’s a genuine embarrassment of riches. Javi Martinez, Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Hernandez, Corentin Tolisso, Kingsley Coman… the list is endless. OK, its not endless but you know what I mean.

LYON 0-2 BAYERN MUNICH

45: PEEP! Changes aplenty. Thiago Mendes replaces Bruno Guimaraes for Lyon. Niklas Sule on for Jerome Boateng. Back underway folks…

HT: Lyon HAD to make that early pressure pay. They didn’t. They were punished. Heavily. Looks like we’re going to see a Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich final on Sunday, folks.

43: Not sure Lyon want to bother with the rest of this match. They allow Leon Goretzka to waltz through the middle of the park and fire a rocket towards goal. I think Thomas Muller may have actually blocked it. Kind of him. Some mercy from the German side.

40: Serge Gnabry is only the second German player to net a brace in a Champions League semi-final, following current teammate Thomas Müller back in 2012-13

39: Miss! Robert Lewandowski trying his best NOT to score tonight. Serge Gnabry whips a devilish ball across the goal and the centre-forward simply misses with an outstretched boot.

36: Just remembered that Arsenal sold Serge Gnabry for £5million. Crazy.

LYON 0-2 BAYERN MUNICH | GNABRY

33: GOAL! He’s done it again! Serge Gnabry has scored his second of the evening and Bayern Munich are cruising at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Robert Lewandowski slides in but makes a real mess of his effort that Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes manages to parry away but there’s Gnabry arriving to finish the job from point-blank range. Game, set and match? I suspect so.

30: Ha! I didn’t know that! Apparently Barcelona are obligated to pay Liverpool more money for the Philippe Coutinho transfer IF Bayern Munich win the Champions League! And he scored twice against them in the quarter-finals. Madness.

27: Marcelo fails to deal with Ivan Perisic’s cross from deep and the ball arrives to Serge Gnabry. The winger collects before fizzing a terrific effort that Anthony Lopes palms away. Cracks starting to show…

24: Serge Gnabry is one of only four players to have been directly involved in 10+ goals in the Champions League this season, along with Robert Lewandowski (19), Erling Haaland (11) and Kylian Mbappé (10).

23:  Signs the floodgates could open. Thiago swings a free-kick in from the right and the usually reliable Thomas Muller barely makes a connection with his near-post half-volley.

21: You might be surprised to hear that Serge Gnabry has scored more Champions League semi-final goals than he did for Tony Pulis during his days at West Brom. Bizarre.

LYON 0-1 BAYERN MUNICH | GNABRY

18: GOAL! Bayern should be 2-0 down… but they have taken the lead! That’s what happens when you miss chances against one of the world’s best.

It’s a stunning solo effort from Arsenal and West Brom reject (yep, really) Serge Gnabry. He cuts inside from the right channel before absolutely leathering it past a helpless Anthony Lopes.

17: Woodwork! Strewth! Lyon on fire… Karl Toko Ekambi, who kept his place ahead of Moussa Dembele, is inches from justifying his manager’s decision. He takes the ball off Alphonso Davies before pinging it against the post.

16: Another update, another Lyon opportunity goes begging… Maxwel Cornet flicks the ball past Leon Goretzka before flying into the penalty area. He squares it but Jerome Boateng is there to make a goal-saving interception. Can’t believe this is the same Bayern who battered Barcelona.

13: Shank! Leon Goretzka powers into the penalty area to meet Robert Lewandowski’s flick but barely connects and is somehow rewarded with a corner. That comes to nothing. Memphis Depay then slashes a cross/shot wide with Karl Toko Ekambi the nearest to connecting. Think it would have taken his head off if he had reached it.

10: Corner to Lyon. Really nice, calm and relaxed play to win the set-piece, which Manuel Neuer punches clear with centre-back Jason Denayer challenging. Bayern sloppy thus far, and Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara the main culprit.

8: Nice and positive start from Lyon. They are looking to take advantage of this seriously high line from their opponents. Bayern WILL give you chances – but you’ll probably need to convert them all to stand a chance of winning.

5: Lyon have their very own Rory Delap in Maxwel Cornet, who lobs a massive throw-in into the penalty area that Manuel Neuer watches bounce wide of the target.

Chance! Oh you’re kidding me… Maxence Caqueret’s forward pass pierces the Bayern defenders and Memphis Depay is through one-on-one with Neuer. The Dutch attacker darts to his right and thrashes one into the side-netting.

3: And just as the Champions League semi-final starts – Manchester City tweet that 900-year-old goalkeeper Scott Carson has signed a new contract. Doubt they would have tweeted that if they’d beaten Lyon on Saturday…

Anyway, Bayern Munich are lovely and wide – using the flanks already with Alphonso Davies looking to maraud forward. He’s outrageous that guy. Only 19!

LYON 0-0 BAYERN MUNICH

1: PEEP! And we’re underway at an empty Estadio Jose Alvalade stadium. Could be an interesting night – could also be an absolute thrashing. We’re about to find out! It’s Germany vs France for the second night running…

Hansi Flick

Bit more pragmatic from Hansi Flick. Naturally.

“Less than 100 per cent will not be enough,” he said. “The game starts from scratch. My team is focused. We have set big goals.

“But it is a game starting at 0-0 and we have to play with the same intensity as against Barca.”

Rudi

Lyon’s head coach Rudi Garcia is… well he’s come out with some wonderful stuff this week.

“We might be the underdogs but we beat big teams to get there and others may start taking us seriously,” he told reporters.

“Maybe we’re not a big mountain to climb but sometimes just a little pebble in your shoe can prevent you from climbing that little mountain.”

I think we should book this fella for some motivational speaking.

Team news

There is none.

Both managers, unsurprisingly, field the same starting XI’s who won their last fixtures. The competition’s leading scorer Robert Lewandowski is in attendance with Thomas Muller in just behind. Karl Toko Ekambi partners Memphis Depay in attack for Lyon.

Twitter round-up

Fred: LYON WILL KNOCK MIGHTY BAYERN MUNICH OUTTA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BOOKMARK THIS TWEET.

Martin: If Lyon beat Bayern tonight I’m going to run around town with nothing but a Lyon crest painted onto me.

Micco: If Bayern Munich won 4-1 against Chelsea, then 8-2 against Barcelona, does that mean we’ll beat Lyon 16-4?

Strange bunch of Tweets tonight, lads. But Micco… OBVIOUSLY that’s true. Duh.

Starting XI

The team news arrives. Moussa Dembele remains on the bench despite a brace off the bench against Manchester City.

Bayern Munich XI: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Alaba, Davies, Thiago, Goreztka, Gnabry, Muller, Perisic, Lewandowski.

Subs: Ulreich, Hoffmann, Odriozola, Sule, Pavard, Martinez, Coutinho, Cuisance, Hernandez, Tolisso, Coman, Zirkzee.

Lyon XI: Lopes, Dubois, Denayer, Marcelo, Marçal, Cornet, Caqueret, Guimaraes, Aouar, Toko-Ekambi, Depay.

Subs: Tatarusanu, Diomande, Andersen, Rafael, Dembele, Traore, Mendes, Reine-Adelaide, Jean Lucas, Tete, Bard, Cherki.

The underdogs…

Perhaps it’s a bit disrespectful for the bookies to have Lyon as 9/1 underdogs this evening – but I can understand why.

Rudi Garcia replaced Sylvinho as manager two months into the season, the club finished outside the European qualification places and they are playing the most in-form side in Europe.

But… Lyon have overcome their status as pre-match betting outsiders in four of their last five Champions League victories.

They’ve also got lethal duo Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay on their books.

Upset on the cards?

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Lyon vs Bayern Munich from Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon.

No, I’m not enjoying the 27 degree weather in Portugal this evening – I’m basking in the light drizzle that Kent is serving up. What a treat.

Tonight is the second Champions League semi-final to determine who will play Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s grand finale.

Surprise package Lyon beat Italian champions Juventus and Manchester City to reach this stage, while Bayern Munich humiliated Barcelona.

In fact, Bayern have crushed everyone they’ve faced in Europe this season by an aggregate score of 39-8.

Should be a decent evening by my calculations. Standby for team news and line ups.

LYON vs BAYERN | TEAM NEWS

Lyon manager Rudi Garcia has a selection headache with fit-again Moussa Dembele available for selection.

The French centre-forward came off the bench to score a brace against Manchester City during their quarter-final victory. He could replace Karl Toko Ekambi alongside Memphis Depay.

Bayern Munich will have to assess whether Benjamin Pavard is fit enough to be considered at right-back.

The defender injured ligaments in his ankle late last month but has returned to fitness quicker than expected.

“Benjamin has worked hard in the past days and we are all happy that he is here,” said manager Hansi Flick.

“We will wait for the final training session tonight and see. He is not an option to start but an option to be in the squad.”
