The presenters of popular YouTube channel Star Wars Explained – which has almost half a million subscribers – used a passage in an official Star Wars book as a springboard to speculate on how and why they could make an appearance in the trilogy finale.
The Knights of Ren operated under the command of Snoke in the years following the fall of the Galactic Empire, and had Kylo Ren in their midst.
The YouTubers pointed to a passage in the Visual Dictionary that says: “He is the archetype of a new generation of dark side users – the Knights of Ren.”
This is one few explicit references to the group as Dark Side users of the Force – and pinning them specifically as Force users seems to be something that’s happened since the release of The Force Awakens, indicating more development work could have been done on them.
Co-host Mollie said: “A lot of people have been speculating that we’ll see the Knights of Ren and that makes sense.
“In the past I’ve always said, now we don’t have Snoke or the Praetorian Guards, I think they’re going to be Kylo Ren’s guards or his buddies; his First of Command or whatever.”
Alex added: “Who knows what the First Order is going to be like under Kylo’s command?
“He might need some enforcers running around, and Force users are going to be hard to combat. So I see them as threats to not only the resistance but also the First Order.”
“There is the question of where have the Knights of Ren been?” Mollie pointed out.
“I would love to see Vader’s castle as their base,” Adam suggested. “Mustafar is kind of out of the way, but it would be cool nonetheless.”
Several new cast members have been announced for Episode 9, but their specific characters have not been confirmed.
“As soon as they announced Keri Russell, that was my first thought – that she could be one of them [Knights of Ren],” Mollie said. “I would love to see a female Dark Side user.”
